• Is the motherboard the cause of these errors?

  Motherboard is : ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe, Rev1.01, On start up get: "cmos checksum error - defaults loaded" error BIOS is reset everytime and can't boot to Windows off HDD. POST report is ok once I tell it there is no Floppy drive attached and not to seek it. The boot sequence starts then just as get to load windows safe mode options whole PC shuts down. BIOS is reset to defaults again. I've checked the battery and jumpers. Tried a known working battery. Changed Graphics card, changed memory, changed HD to one without an OS. Disconnected DVD drive. PSU is known to be ok. IN BIOS CPU is recognised correctly and memory is also recognised ok. So is it likely to be a bad motherboard or corrupted BIOS or something else? Thanks :)

  At the moment I am running a Windows Terminal Server 2008 for around 10 clients that use the server to run programs and access data. Is there anyway to separate the resources of each user so that they do not impact each other in terms of resources. User 1: Opens program User 2: Notices slow down I have looked into using Windows System Resource Manager but do not know if it provides what I need and if there are any other 3rd party tools that also provide this functionality. • How low-power can a home server get?

  I've got quite simple question actually. How green, low-power and efficient x86 home server can I build using consumer parts with rather constrained budget. After looking through some Google hits I've found out that system based on dual-core atom, some modest mITX board (gigabit lan, integrated audio and gfx etc), one RAM module and one 'green' WD HDD, powered by picoITX PSU uses about 30W at idle up to 40 at load. Can you get lower (or how much lower) then that? Maybe some VIA nano chips, or single core atom? My home server would take care of some back-upping mixed with little ftp/http traffic.

• Make cloudera-vm work on Oracle VM VirtualBox

  I downloaded this and the instructions say: Important: You must enable the I/O APIC in order to use 64-bit mode. (See http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch03.html.) On newer versions of VirtualBox, it may default to using SATA as the disk interface. This can cause a kernel panic in the VM. Switching to the IDE driver solves this problem. I am running this on Red Hat 64-bit mode (I've also tried on Ubuntu 64-bit with the same result). I pointed to the cloudera-vm image as a startup disk for the VM. I am getting this message: Failed to open a session for the virtual machine ClouderaDevelopment. VT-x features locked or unavailable in MSR. (VERR_VMX_MSR_LOCKED_OR_DISABLED). Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005) Component: Console Interface: IConsole {1968b7d3-e3bf-4ceb-99e0-cb7c913317bb} Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

• Resize primary partition

  I have a hdd with the folowing partition table 12Gb Primary Partition (ntfs) 140Gb Extended Partition (ntfs) I want to install windows 7 and I need more space for the Primary Partition. The problem is that when I resize partitons I obtain: 12Gb Primary Partition (ntfs) 110Gb Extended Partition (ntfs) 30Gb Free Space So I can't allocate the free space to primary partition because the free space is at the end of the disk. Is there a solution to extend the primary partition as: 42Gb Primary Partition (ntfs) 110Gb Extended Partition (ntfs) without repartitioning the entire disk? I used partition magic, gparted-live-0.4.6-4 and others with no success. With the Disk Management from Vista I manage to extend primary partition, but made my partitions dinamic.

  We had our samba server (ubuntu 8.04 ltr) share fill up the other day but when I went to look at it I cant see any of the shares have to much on them we have 5 group shares and then each users has an individual share one users has 22gigs of stuff a few others have 10-20mb of stuff and everyone else is empty so maybe like 26gigs total I deleted a few files yesterday and freed up about 250mb of space today when i checked it it was completely full again and i deleted some older files and freed up about 170mb of stuff but i can watch it slowly creep down in free space. I keep running a df -h Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/sda1 241690180 229340500 169200 100% / varrun 257632 260 257372 1% /var/run varlock 257632 0 257632 0% /var/lock udev 257632 72 257560 1% /dev devshm 257632 52 257580 1% /dev/shm lrm 257632 40000 217632 16% /lib/modules/2.6.24-28-generic /volatile what can I do to try to hunt down whats taking up so much of my hdd? (im fairly new to unix in general so i apologize if this is not well explained)

• Create bootable partition from image

  I have a Macbook Pro with a dead CD drive. I don't have easy access to a replacement drive. I'm trying to install Ubuntu, and I can't get the MBP to recognize a USB stick as a bootable media (I believe MBP's have issues with booting from USB in some cases). Is it possible to take a disk image and write it to a partition on the HDD so that I can then boot from that partition and then install the OS onto a third partition?   Hi All, Does anyone experience this problem of corrupted .WAR file after it has been copied over the network share ? this is .WAR file (Web Archive) the J2EE application file (.WAR file is compressed with the same zip algorithm i think ?) Scenario 1: Windows Server 2008 x64 transfer into Windows XP using RDP client (Local Devices and Resources) Scenario 2: Windows XP 32 bit transfer into Windows Server 2003 x64 using shared network drive (port 445 SMB ?) for both of the scenario it always failed / corrupted (the source code seems to be duplicated at the end of line when you open up in the Eclipse / Java IDE). but when in both scenario i compressed the file into .ZIP file everything is OK. can anyone explains why this problem happens ? • background copy large files to a laptop?

  Hey All, I like to watch windows media center recorded TV files on my laptop in bed. I find thought that when the programs are in HD I have a lot of stuttering and delays--no doubt b/c of the amount of data being transferred. I actually have a fair amount of space on the laptop's hdd, and wouldn't mind moving the files onto that hard drive, where no doubt my problem would go away. But that requires some planning & time for the files to move. Is there a utility out there that would kind of 'trickle' the files over to the laptop over a long period of time, w/out soaking its bandwidth? Something like ms' BITS tech?   Currently I have ASUS P5Q-EM and 3 HDD in RAID5 using it's on-board RAID controller Intel ICH10R. I want to bye a new motherboard, for example, Gigabyte GA-EQ45M-S2 which also have on-board RAID controller, but Intel ICH10DO. What will happen with my data on RAID5? Will I have to re-create the array from the scratch and lost all my data? Is such array a soft RAID or soft-hard? What if my current motherboard will broken? What will happen with my data?

• How to install network drivers during installation?

  I have a server that I'm attempting to install windows onto. However, the disk is an iscsi target provided by ipxe. Everything appears to go well until about 3/4 through the install process I get an error about a critical driver missing and the installation is cancelled. I would say the critical driver would be the network card. It's an intel nic and the drivers are not on the windows installation CD. I tried slipstreaming them with RTSevenLite, but after it created the CD it seems it failed to make it bootable. I've also not been successful in making a bootable USB thumb drive or USB HDD. I suspect a buggy bios even though I have the latest. How to install network drivers during installation? Windows used to provide an optional F6 during install feature but this seems to be missing in Windows Servert 2008. Perhaps there is a way to do this, or another method?

  I just put together a new system build in the hopes that all of my daily tasks would run smoothly and without any hiccups. Unfortunately I am still seeing some sound and sometimes video stuttering when playing HD movies in VLC (no problems with xvid/divx files). My setup is as follows: Intel core i5 750 quad core 2.66mhz 4GB ram asus p55 motherboard radeon hd 5570 video card 650gb 7200rpm western digital sata HDD 23" Nec ea23wmi monitor Operating System: Windows 7 What might be the main bottleneck that needs upgrading to fix my delays? Seems like the hard drive might be the problem but anything faster than 7200rpm is beyond my budget for a decent hard drive. Could it be anything else?

• Graphics Startup Screen

  Specs: AMD Athlon XP 2400+ @ 1987 MHz / 2x 512MB PC3200 DDR RAM / 160GB IDE HDD / 128MB GeForce 6200 AGP / FIC AM37 / Windows XP Pro SP3 So, every time I start up my machine, there's a startup screen for the graphics card. It should display "NVIDIA GeForce 6200 VGA BIOS" with some other copyright information underneath it. However, it randomly changed to say "NV44A VGA BIOS." I think the GeForce 6200 codename is NV44A or something, but is there someway to change it back to say "GeForce 6200 VGA BIOS" or, if not, to completely stop it from showing upon startup? (Graphics drivers are all up to date.) Thanks in advance.

• bash process uses 90% CPU, comes back on computer restart

  I’ve replaced the old HDD of my late 2008 unibody MacBook (8 GB of RAM, running OS X 10.7.4) with an OCZ Vertex 3 SSD. After doing this, I've installed Lion and restored my data from a Time Machine backup. Everything is fine, except for a process named “bash” that permanently uses about 90 % CPU. If I kill it via Activity Monitor, everything goes back to normal, but unfortunately the process comes back every time I restart the computer. I've tried do zap the PRAM, reinstall 10.7.4 from the combo package, and even simply wait for more than 2 hours, but the problem is still here.

• External hard drive doesn't appear in Computer

  I cannot work out why this is happening. I have an external hard drive (which is an old laptop hard drive with an IDE to USB adapter). Plugging it into my computer powers it up. It spins correctly and the lights on the adapter flash normally. Uninstalling from hardware manager and plugging it back in causes Windows to "install new software", and it says it has installed properly. In Disk Management it comes up in the bottom part as Disk 2 with the right size (~60 GB), but not in the top half. There are three empty drives in the top half. They don't have titles or drive letters. Right clicking them bring up slightly varying context menus, but all with the options disabled. Here is a picture of my Disk Management screen: How do I make this drive show up in My Computer? I need to format it and use it as an external hard drive.

• development and music recording machine suggestions?

  I wasn't sure if this belongs on SuperUser so flag if so. I am looking to build, primarily, a windows development machine that is also good for recording using Cubase. I know I should use seperate machines but I'm on a budget this time of year. I also havn't kept up with hardware for quite a few years. Basically I know I want quad core, multiple monitor support (no gaming requirements). A lot of RAM, very quiet case and super fast HDD (SSD OR 10,000RPM)for compiling and latency. I will store libraries and other data on a USB drive. Sound card is not needed as I will be using an audio interface, all other music recording equipment is taken care of also. I could do with some decent monitor recomendations also. All suggestions welcome, thanks.

• Time Capsule Refuses to Connect After Interrupted File Transfer

  I have a first generation Apple Time Capsule set up as a NAS on my network. I use the built-in hard drive for Time Machine backups, with a 1.5 TB external HDD attached to the Time Capsule over USB. Whenever I cancel a file transfer from the external drive to my Macbook (or quit a video I had been streaming from it, as was the most recent incident), I can no longer connect to the Time Capsule or the attached drive, and I have to unplug it to get it working again. How can I fix this? Is it a network error? Could the Time Capsule be at fault or could it be my computer?

  I am having a particular nasty problem of my main system drive 'disappearing' all of the sudden while the system is running. The vendor somewhat knows about this but has not managed to fix it completely over multiple fw iterations. Problems I have with the support is that I cannot provide any particular system log files/entries to further analyse what might have been going on because, well - windows cannot write to its 'lost' drive before bsod'ing. Is there any way to configure where Windows 7 stores its event logs so that I could specify a second physical hdd?

• Why does Windows spooler require an administrator account?

  Does anyone know what changes I might need to make to allow restricted users to print using a printer configured for spooling? My Windows XP SP3 system currently requires me to use an Admin account for printing if the printer is configured to spool documents before printing. If the printer is configured for direct printing it works for all accounts. This used to work and some months back it just stopped, and I can't pin down why. The printer, which is an HP PSC 1200 (an old printer) itself is configured for Everyone to have Print authority and my specific (restricted) account to have Full authority, that is Print, Manage Printers and Manager Documents. My HDD is locked down for restricted users given them only read authority to the entire file system except their data directories, which is how I have run my systems for years. I assume there may be a directory somewhere that I need to allow users to write to.

  Hello All, I want to ensure I have done all I can to configure a system's disks for serious database use. The three areas I know of (any others?) to be concerned about are: I/O size: the database engine and disk's native size should either match, or the database's native I/O size should be a multiple of the disk's native I/O size. Disks that are capable of Direct Memory Access (eg. IDE) should be configured for it. When a disk says it has written data persistently, it must be so! No keeping it in cache and lying about it. I have been looking for information on how to ensure these are so for CENTOS and Ubuntu, but can't seem to find anything at all! I want to be able to check these things and change them if needed. Any and all input appreciated.

• Building a new PC, Installing XP, blue screen of death

  I got a gigabyte barebones kit and am installing windows-XP(SP1) and the initial setup works, then it restarts and goes into the second phase of the setup. Then when installing components (I think that's what it says) it gets half way done and comes up with a blue screen saying IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. BUT! I had gotten past that by installing windows-XP media center addition Now I am trying to install the drivers for my Asus ATI Radeon 5770 graphics card and I get another blue screen of death that doesnt give much info something about address x0000005. Would you think there is something wrong with something in my system or do you think if I got windows 7 that would take care of things? Sorry for probably not giving enough info. • Set-and-forget Windows backup software with NAS-support?

  Hi all, I am looking for set-and-forget backup software for Windows (Vista & 7, and if possible XP/2003). The idea is that it runs in the background on the clients, and does its thing towards a network-share. In case the HDD of one of these clients spontaneously combusts, all I want to have to do is: replace the drive, insert a USB-stick, boot from it, and restore the machine. It should support drives which use [ICH]-RAID. What are my options here? It looks like WHS meets all the requirements, but I am curious about my other options here.

• How to customize Windows 7 HAL library during installation (BSOD STOP: 0x000000A5)?

  While trying to install Windows 7 x86 Ultimate on Samsung M40 laptop (Pentium M 1.7 Dothan, 2 GB RAM/ 100 GB HDD) i receive BSOD STOP: 0x000000A5: The bios in this system is not fully ACPI compliant. Please contact your system vendor for an updated bios. The bios on the system is updated to latest version. If ACPI is the real source of the issue it means that I possibly could use another HAL library. In Windows XP it is possible to install system with generic HAL library pressing F7 when installer asks to supply drivers, but on Windows 7 I can't find such option. Ironically, Vista installs and works nice, even if they said that Windows 7 is less demanding for hardware. Windows 7 Advisor also tells nothing suspicious. Can anybody tell me how to customize Windows 7 installer to use generic HAL library (if it is possible, of course) or point me to another solution?
