  • Linux wget, how to display progress percentage after session has reload?

    - by skyrail
I am running debian Squeeze in console mode on a plug computer. I control it opening an SSH session from a Windows machine, on the same local network. I started downloading a large file using wget. What I get is a console progress bar showing the percentage of data downloaded, file size, and download rate. When I close the session, debian is still running and downloading. Fine. But When I close and reopen a session, how can see which amount of data was downloaded, using a linux command ? thanks.

  • Is there a Unix/Linux platform equivalent of Telligent Community (formerly Community Server)?

    - by Scott A. Lawrence
Telligent Community combines blogs, wikis, forums, and file-sharing capabilities into a single product with single sign-on, using all Microsoft technologies. Is there an equivalent offering that runs on Unix/Linux? Or would I have to pick and choose individual product offerings and figure out another option for single sign-on across them? Are there plug-ins for something like WordPress or MovableType that might add the necessary functionality? A friend of mine is looking to add a "members-only" area to her company's website, and since they're hosted on Dreamhost (and can't afford StackExchange pricing yet), I'm trying to find other options for them.

  • How to configure Linux to open files by extension?

    - by Gregory MOUSSAT
The various Linux's desktops open files according to their mime type. This is a very nice feature but I also need to open them by extension (as with Windows). For instance, I want to open every xxxxx.vnc files with a specific program when I double-click on them. I use xfce but I don't think it differs from Gnome or KDE because all of them use the same configuration files (defaults.list and mimeapps.list). If possible the settings are user specific, not system wide. I've found some very poor informations about that, and all are system wide, so may be wiped out by some updates.

  • Is there a Windows or Linux equivalent of Soulver calculator application?

    - by Shevek
I've just been shown a brilliant calculator app called Soulver which is only available on Mac OS X Maths on a Mac as it should be Soulver is a new kind of calculator application which uses a simple yet powerful word-processor style interface instead of the traditional "button" approach to doing math. Main Features No equals button - Soulver instantly calculates as you type. Multiple lines - Soulver lets you do math over multiple lines and edit previous expressions. Flexible to words - Soulver doesn't mind if you include words or labels between numbers. Basic functions - Soulver includes every standard calculator function, like sin(), cos() & tan() Clever English functions - Soulver includes some "English" math functions. For instance you can type "10% off $200" and get $180 Floating palettes - Soulver's answer & stats palettes will give you conversions and statistics on your work as your type Save your work - like a word processor, Soulver allows you to save and reopen your work This is a fantastic concept and I would really like to find it's equivalent for Windows and/or Linux. Any suggestions?

  • Good way to run commands on remote computer without its own public-facing IP address (Linux Centos)

    - by Chris Dutrow
Have a few computers running Linux Centos 6.4. They are connected to an unmanaged switch, which in turn, is connected to a router (Verzion Fios issue). What is a good way to "log in" to one of the computers so that I can run commands? Do I need to use SSH, or something different? Since the computers do not have their own public-facing IP addresses, do I need to set up some kind of port forwarding within the router? What is a simple, reliable way to accomplish this? Thanks so much!

  • Are there any FIPS-140-2 certified solutions for Linux?

    - by Mark Renouf
I'm not even 100% certain what this involves, but my current understanding is this: use of only approved cryptographic algorithms for network traffic (easy, we use SSL and lock down the algorithms to only the really strong ones). Some form of physical data protection, involving disk encryption and physical tamper evident packaging. Obviously we're on our own if we need a tamper-proof product. But what about software for encrpytion. My guess is just using LUKS (although secure) will not be certified because it's open source (gov't seems a bit biased towards proprietary solutions here). Guardian Edge was mentioned by someone, but that appears to be complete Windows-based. So we need something like it, certified FIPS-140 compliant we can use on Linux.

  • Is there a test to see if hardware virtualization (vmx / xvm) are presently enabled within a Linux session?

    - by Dr. Edward Morbius
I'm writing procedures for configuring VirtualBox support for 64-bit SMP guests, which requires hardware virtualization suppot (VTx/Intel, AMD-V/AMD). I have successfully configured this myself, however I'd like the procedure to be clear. sed -ne '/^flags/s/^.*: //p' /proc/cpuinfo | egrep -q '(vmx|svm)' && echo Has hardware virt || echo No HW virt ... shows if the CPU is capable. I've still got to go enable the feature in BIOS. Any way to test from within Linux to see that this is no or not? Thanks.

  • How to set up DHCP-configured access through a Linux box?

    - by marcusw
I would like an old desktop box to use my laptop as a router to access the internet. Here is my setup: I have one ethernet port in the side of my laptop which I want to use to get internet access to my desktop computer. The laptop is connected to the LAN via a wireless link. Both systems run Linux. The desktop autoconfigures itself using DHCP. The laptop is a Kubuntu system. I do not have any crossover cables, though wireshark on the laptop sees the DHCP requests from the desktop just fine, so I doubt that I need one. What do I have to do to make this work?

  • for what reason live USB linux images are not 100% persistent?

    - by gcb
I understand that during CD-R times non-persistence had a purpose, but what's the purpose now that pretty much everyone uses USB flash drivers? not to mention USB3 sticks are pretty much 4x faster than my HD raid. I'm writing this while taking a break going over the linux from scratch guide... And i'm still baffled that this is not the norm already with all live images. So, Is there any reason (besides historical) that i'm missing and that will bite me after I finish this ext3-rw image?

  • Possible to get SSD TRIM (discard) working on ext4 + LVM + software RAID in Linux?

    - by Don MacAskill
We use RAID1+0 with md on Linux (currently 2.6.37) to create an md device, then use LVM to provide volume management on top of the device, and then use ext4 as our filesystem on the LVM volume groups. With SSDs as the drives, we'd like to see the TRIM commands propagate through the layers (ext4 - LVM - md - SSD) to the devices. It looks like recent 2.6.3x kernels have had a lot of new SSD-related TRIM support added, including lots more coverage of Device Mapper scenarios, but we still can't seem to get it to cascade down properly. Is this possible yet? If so, how? If not, is any progress being made?

  • My Logitech G35 headphones aren't very loud on Linux (fedora 14) why?

    - by DarkMantis
I have recently purchased a set of G35 headphones. They seem to be very loud when I use them on Windows, but when I try and use them on Fedora 14, they are very quiet and I can't seem to make them louder. I have obviously checked the sound settings in Gnome, and they are all up full. I have got ALSA-mixer installed but seems to make no difference. There doesn't seem to be any specific drivers for these headphones for Linux. Anyone know how to make them go a bit louder?

  • My linux server takes more than an hour to boot. Suggestions?

    - by jamieb
I am building a CentOS 5.4 system that boots off a compact flash card using a card reader that emulates an IDE drive. It literally takes about an hour to boot. The ultra-slow part occurs when Grub is loading the kernel. Once that's done, the rest of the boot process only takes about a minute to get to a login prompt. Does anyone have any suggestions? I suspect that it may have to do with UDMA. Everything IDE-related in my BIOS seems to checkout. The read performance hdparm is telling me 1.77 MB/s. Ouch! (But even at that rate, it still shouldn't take an hour to decompress and load the kernel) [root@server ~]# hdparm -tT /dev/hdc /dev/hdc: Timing cached reads: 2444 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1222.04 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 6 MB in 3.39 seconds = 1.77 MB/sec Trying to enable DMA is a no-go though: [root@server ~]# hdparm -d1 /dev/hdc /dev/hdc: setting using_dma to 1 (on) HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted using_dma = 0 (off) Here's some command outputs that might help: System [root@server ~]# uname -a Linux server.localdomain 2.6.18-164.el5xen #1 SMP Thu Sep 3 04:47:32 EDT 2009 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux PCI info: [root@server ~]# lspci -v 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ/P/PL Memory Controller Hub (rev 02) Subsystem: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ/P/PL Memory Controller Hub Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0 Capabilities: [e0] Vendor Specific Information 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 10 Memory at fdf00000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=512K] I/O ports at ff00 [size=8] Memory at d0000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M] Memory at fdf80000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256K] Capabilities: [90] Message Signalled Interrupts: 64bit- Queue=0/0 Enable- Capabilities: [d0] Power Management version 2 00:1d.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB UHCI Controller #1 (rev 01) (prog-if 00 [UHCI]) Subsystem: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB UHCI Controller #1 Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16 I/O ports at fe00 [size=32] 00:1d.1 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB UHCI Controller #2 (rev 01) (prog-if 00 [UHCI]) Subsystem: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB UHCI Controller #2 Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 17 I/O ports at fd00 [size=32] 00:1d.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB UHCI Controller #3 (rev 01) (prog-if 00 [UHCI]) Subsystem: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB UHCI Controller #3 Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 18 I/O ports at fc00 [size=32] 00:1d.3 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB UHCI Controller #4 (rev 01) (prog-if 00 [UHCI]) Subsystem: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB UHCI Controller #4 Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 19 I/O ports at fb00 [size=32] 00:1d.7 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller (rev 01) (prog-if 20 [EHCI]) Subsystem: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16 Memory at fdfff000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=1K] Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2 Capabilities: [58] Debug port 00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 PCI Bridge (rev e1) (prog-if 01 [Subtractive decode]) Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0 Bus: primary=00, secondary=01, subordinate=01, sec-latency=32 I/O behind bridge: 0000d000-0000dfff Memory behind bridge: fde00000-fdefffff Prefetchable memory behind bridge: 00000000fdd00000-00000000fdd00000 Capabilities: [50] #0d [0000] 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801GB/GR (ICH7 Family) LPC Interface Bridge (rev 01) Subsystem: Intel Corporation 82801GB/GR (ICH7 Family) LPC Interface Bridge Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 0 Capabilities: [e0] Vendor Specific Information 00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801GB/GR/GH (ICH7 Family) SATA IDE Controller (rev 01) (prog-if 80 [Master]) Subsystem: Intel Corporation 82801GB/GR/GH (ICH7 Family) SATA IDE Controller Flags: bus master, 66MHz, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 17 I/O ports at <unassigned> I/O ports at <unassigned> I/O ports at <unassigned> I/O ports at <unassigned> I/O ports at f800 [size=16] Capabilities: [70] Power Management version 2 00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) SMBus Controller (rev 01) Subsystem: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) SMBus Controller Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 17 I/O ports at 0500 [size=32] 01:04.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. • How to subscribe to a youtube feed from linux command line?

    - by Tim
I want to subscribe to a youtube channel and automatically download new videos to my linux machine. I know I could do this e.g. with miro, but I will not watch the videos using Miro, want to choose the quality and would like to run it as a cronjob. It should be able to: know which feed entries are new and not download old entries resume (or at least redownload) failed/incomplete downloads from older sessions Are there any complete solutions for this? If not it would be enough for me (maybe even preferable) to just have a command line rss reader that remembers which entries have already been there and writes the new video urls (e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FodYFMaI4vQ&feature=youtube_gdata from http://gdata.youtube.com/feeds/api/users/tedxtalks/uploads) into a file. I could then accomplish the rest using a bash script and youtube-dl. What would be programs usable for this purpose?

  • Can Linux works as 802.1X authenticator in bridge mode ?

    - by Kartoch
I want to create a lab for my students with netkit (a network emulator based on 802.1X) to study 802.1X. I can create the authentication server (FreeRadius) and configure the client with XSupplicant connected by a switch (a Linux in bridge mode). I'm looking to a way to configure the switch as Authenticator, i.e.: when the client is connected, the switch only forwards EAP packets to the authentication server. then the switch lets the user access to the local network when the authentication server authorizes the client. At the present time there is a lot of documentation to do this with a wireless point but no one for a switch. Does anyone have an idea or know the good software for it ?

  • How to create a Linux Media Server using Ubuntu?

    - by Thomas
Hello all: I'm an intermediate Linux user and a relative beginner to servers. I would like some help finding resources on setting up a basic server. I have Googled, and am a member of the Ubuntu Forums, but just figure it can't hurt to ask the Stack Overflow community for help as well. I plan on installing on an old laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad R61i or Toshiba Satellite A105). I have downloaded the latest Ubuntu (9.10) but don't know how to do any of the configurations. I just want a server to store my files where I can access (download and/ or stream) from a browser. Any help you can give is greatly appreciated. Thanks! Thomas

  • Linux Software RAID: How to fsck on hard drive?

    - by Rick-Rainer Ludwig
We have a Linux server running with Software RAID1. We see some issues in /var/log/messages like: unreadable sector. I want to perform a complete fsck on the drive to get some more information, but a fsck /dev/md0 brings a clean due to the Software RAID layer in between. How can I check the real hard drive? Do I need to disassemble the whole RAID? How do I deal with the inconsistency in the partition due to the additional Software RAID header? Does anyone have a good idea for this?

  • Updated linux, grub menu not booting to windows partition.

    - by Chris Flynn
I have just updated my Ubuntu linux to Ubuntu 10.4, not my grub menu isnt letting me boot to Windows Partition. The problem seems to be with grubs new update from using an editable menu.lst file to using a non editable grub.cfg file. Everywhere I look it states "DO NOT EDIT THE GRUB.CGF FILE". I am at a loss as what to do. I figured that the new configuration has screwed up the Windows Boot File. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this. I am not sure if it is a windows issue or an issue with the Grub boot menu. Any help would be great. Thanks -Chris Flynn

    I just bought a tiny computer called a fit-pc2 which came with a somewhat customized Ubuntu 9.10 installation. uname -a reports: Linux 2.6.31-34-fitpc2 #7 SMP Thu Apr 22 17:43:26 IDT 2010 i686 GNU/Linux It seems that after several hours of running with heavy network load, all networking ceases and I get the following in kern.log: BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at ff09dfc0 IP: [<c0150300>] kthread_should_stop+0x10/0x20 *pde = 00000000 Oops: 0000 [#1] SMP last sysfs file: /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.7/usb1/idVendor Modules linked in: binfmt_misc ppdev sbc_fitpc2_wdt snd_usb_audio snd_usb_lib i2c_isch sch_gpio snd_seq_dummy snd_hda_intel snd_pcm_oss snd_seq_oss snd_seq_midi snd_rawmidi snd_mixer_oss snd_seq_midi_event snd_seq snd_pcm snd_timer snd_page_alloc snd_seq_device iptable_filter ip_tables x_tables snd_hwdep lpc_sch snd psmouse rt2860sta(C) uvcvideo video pl2303 soundcore mfd_core output videodev v4l1_compat lirc_igorplugusb lirc_dev serio_raw lp parport usbhid r8169 mii iegd_mod drm agpgart Pid: 16, comm: kblockd/1 Tainted: G C (2.6.31-34-fitpc2 #7) SBC-FITPC2 EIP: 0060:[<c0150300>] EFLAGS: 00010246 CPU: 1 EIP is at kthread_should_stop+0x10/0x20 EAX: ff09dfc4 EBX: c180cbac ECX: 0109d000 EDX: f709df98 ESI: f709df98 EDI: c180cba0 EBP: f709dfb8 ESP: f709df90 DS: 007b ES: 007b FS: 00d8 GS: 0000 SS: 0068 Process kblockd/1 (pid: 16, ti=f709c000 task=f7084b60 task.ti=f709c000) Stack: c014c14d c180cba4 00000000 f7084b60 c0150770 f709dfa4 f709dfa4 f7023ef4 <0> c180cba0 c014c0d0 f709dfe0 c015047c 00000000 00000000 00000000 f709dfcc <0> f709dfcc c0150400 00000000 00000000 00000000 c0103ce7 f7023ef4 00000000 Call Trace: [<c014c14d>] ? worker_thread+0x7d/0xe0 [<c0150770>] ? autoremove_wake_function+0x0/0x40 [<c014c0d0>] ? worker_thread+0x0/0xe0 [<c015047c>] ? kthread+0x7c/0x90 [<c0150400>] ? kthread+0x0/0x90 [<c0103ce7>] ? kernel_thread_helper+0x7/0x10 Code: a6 8b 55 0c 8d 4d e0 89 f8 89 34 24 e8 7a fd ff ff 89 c3 eb 92 90 90 90 90 90 90 55 64 a1 00 80 76 c0 8b 80 70 02 00 00 89 e5 5d <8b> 40 fc c3 8d b6 00 00 00 00 8d bf 00 00 00 00 55 ba d7 86 62 EIP: [<c0150300>] kthread_should_stop+0x10/0x20 SS:ESP 0068:f709df90 CR2: 00000000ff09dfc0 ---[ end trace 06004df70b9cf435 ]--- BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at ff09dfc8 IP: [<c0521bc8>] _spin_lock_irqsave+0x18/0x30 *pde = 00000000 Oops: 0002 [#2] SMP last sysfs file: /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.7/usb1/idVendor Modules linked in: binfmt_misc ppdev sbc_fitpc2_wdt snd_usb_audio snd_usb_lib i2c_isch sch_gpio snd_seq_dummy snd_hda_intel snd_pcm_oss snd_seq_oss snd_seq_midi snd_rawmidi snd_mixer_oss snd_seq_midi_event snd_seq snd_pcm snd_timer snd_page_alloc snd_seq_device iptable_filter ip_tables x_tables snd_hwdep lpc_sch snd psmouse rt2860sta(C) uvcvideo video pl2303 soundcore mfd_core output videodev v4l1_compat lirc_igorplugusb lirc_dev serio_raw lp parport usbhid r8169 mii iegd_mod drm agpgart Pid: 16, comm: kblockd/1 Tainted: G D C (2.6.31-34-fitpc2 #7) SBC-FITPC2 EIP: 0060:[<c0521bc8>] EFLAGS: 00010086 CPU: 1 EIP is at _spin_lock_irqsave+0x18/0x30 EAX: 00000100 EBX: ff09dfc8 ECX: 00000286 EDX: ff09dfc8 ESI: f7084b60 EDI: ff09dfc4 EBP: f709dd88 ESP: f709dd88 DS: 007b ES: 007b FS: 00d8 GS: 0000 SS: 0068 Process kblockd/1 (pid: 16, ti=f709c000 task=f7084b60 task.ti=f709c000) Stack: f709dda4 c0127c0b 00000082 00000001 ff09dfc4 f7084b60 00000000 f709ddd0 <0> c0137fd2 00000086 f70954c4 00000000 f7098480 f709ddf0 f7094fc0 f7084b60 <0> 00000000 00000009 f709ddf0 c013c3f8 00000001 c1807c60 f709ddf0 f7084b60 Call Trace: [<c0127c0b>] ? complete+0x1b/0x60 [<c0137fd2>] ? mm_release+0x52/0xf0 [<c013c3f8>] ? exit_mm+0x18/0x110 [<c013c6db>] ? do_exit+0xfb/0x2e0 [<c013998a>] ? print_oops_end_marker+0x2a/0x30 [<c0522aab>] ? oops_end+0x8b/0xd0 [<c011eac4>] ? no_context+0xb4/0xd0 [<c011eb1d>] ? __bad_area_nosemaphore+0x3d/0x1a0 [<c0133a56>] ? load_balance_newidle+0x96/0x320 [<c011ec92>] ? bad_area_nosemaphore+0x12/0x20 [<c0524106>] ? do_page_fault+0x2f6/0x380 [<c012cc30>] ? finish_task_switch+0x50/0xe0 [<c0523e10>] ? do_page_fault+0x0/0x380 [<c0522006>] ? error_code+0x66/0x70 [<c0523e10>] ? do_page_fault+0x0/0x380 [<c0150300>] ? kthread_should_stop+0x10/0x20 [<c014c14d>] ? worker_thread+0x7d/0xe0 [<c0150770>] ? autoremove_wake_function+0x0/0x40 [<c014c0d0>] ? worker_thread+0x0/0xe0 [<c015047c>] ? kthread+0x7c/0x90 [<c0150400>] ? kthread+0x0/0x90 [<c0103ce7>] ? kernel_thread_helper+0x7/0x10 Code: 00 00 00 55 89 e5 f0 83 28 01 79 05 e8 02 ff ff ff 5d c3 55 89 c2 89 e5 9c 58 8d 74 26 00 89 c1 fa 90 8d 74 26 00 b8 00 01 00 00 <f0> 66 0f c1 02 38 e0 74 06 f3 90 8a 02 eb f6 89 c8 5d c3 90 8d EIP: [<c0521bc8>] _spin_lock_irqsave+0x18/0x30 SS:ESP 0068:f709dd88 CR2: 00000000ff09dfc8 ---[ end trace 06004df70b9cf436 ]--- Fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed! • Why Matlab in screen in Linux on PuTTY terminates itself after closing PuTTY session?

    - by Karl
I connected to a linux server with PuTTY and start a screen session, and start matlab with: matlab -nodesktop Then, I run my matlab code as usual. The code will run for hours. So to test whether screen works, I start another PuTTY session and run top. Then, I close PuTTY session with still-running Matlab (top shows Matlab at 100% CPU usage) in screen. To my surprise, my Matlab process vanished after I close the aforementioned session. I've tried this a few times, and it seems the same thing happened. screen -ls shows that my screens are there but detached. top also shows that my matlab is not there. What might be the possible cause of this? Doesn't screen normally should keep on running even I terminate my PuTTY session?
