  • Windows 7 won't recognize backup set can I script extracting the files in some other way?

    The Windows 7 Backup/Restore created multiple backup sets and I was able to restore the oldest version, but not the most recent, which is not seen by the application. I do see all of the zip files and there are hundreds in later versions. Is there a way to extract each of these correctly outside of the regular restoration method? Perhaps scripting an extract of each day one after another? further clarifying The backup files were all made to an external drive. The original computer died completely, power supply, drives everything. I am trying to reconstruct as much as possible and the only backup set recognized is 6 months older. This was recovered over a new install, but unzipping thousands of zip files is not really a simple unzip copy project as the original paths are not a simple thing to reconstruct.

  • Vim: Custom Folding function done, custom highlighting required

    I have defined a function in vim to properly indent folds. Ie so they look like this: Unfolded this is text also text indented text indented text not indented text folded with default function this is text also text +-- 2 lines: indented text ---------------------------- not indented text folded with my new function this is text also text ++- 2 lines: indented text ---------------------------- not indented text The only problem is the the highlighting is still like this: folded with my new function (highlighting shown with tag) this is text also text <hi> ++- 2 lines: indented text ----------------------------</hi> not indented text I would like the highlighting to start at the ++ and not at the beginning of the line. I have looked in the vim manual but could not find anything like that. One so-so solution I found was to make the background black. highlight Folded ctermbg=black ctermfg=white cterm=bold But this make folds less visible. I have tried several variations of: syn keyword Folded lines syn region Folded ... But I don't think that this is the way that folds are selected. Can anyone offer a suggestion?   • Force dual-mono audio (L+L or R+R) in Youtube video playback for one-channel audio movies

    Occasionally, I find Youtube videos that have only one audio channel (only left or only right); example video (left channel only). This is quite annoying, especially with headphones on, as I hear sound in one ear, and no sound in the other. So, I want to be able to easily force dual mono (Left+Left or Right+Right) when I find that kind of video, and switch to normal stereo after I finish watching it. I have my headphones plugged well / I don't create audio/video - I want it for real-time playback only, In Windows audio config, setting balance 100% to Left / Right doesn't help (I have either still only left when moved to left, and no sound at all when moved to right), I've checked all the configurations in Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Audio > Sound Playback > Advanced like suggested in this post, in conjunction with moving balance left/right, and it doesn't seem to have any impact on actual sound I hear in headphones, No need to mix L with R, I just want L+L or R+R, I prefer software solutions to buying a stereo-to-mono adapter, Free solutions please, no $$$ ones, neither trials etc., In Control Panel > Realtek HD Sound Effect Manager I can turn on various mumbo-jumbo effects like: Concert Hall / Hangar / Bathroom / whatever environment (and in fact it makes the sound appear in two ears, but well, it's ridiculous to do this;), but there is no Dual Mono option. Finally, I know I can force L+L or R+R in VLC Player which supports Youtube (well, a little hack is needed, because Youtube internals change from time to time) but it is not very convenient to launch VLC just to play Youtube video - I want to keep it in the browser, I use Firefox generally (but well, if I don't find easier way, I will launch it in VLC).

  • Automating the choice between JPEG and PNG with a script

    Choosing the right format to save your images in is crucial for preserving image quality and reducing artifacts. Different formats follow different compression methods and come with their own set of advantages and disadvantages. JPG, for instance is suited for real life photographs that are rich in color gradients. The lossless PNG, on the other hand, is far superior when it comes to schematic figures: Picking the right format can be a chore when working with a large number of files. That's why I would love to find a way to automate it. A little bit of background on my particular use case: I am working on a number of handouts for a series of lectures at my unversity. The handouts are rich in figures, which I have to extract from PDF-formatted slides. Extracting these images gives me lossless PNGs, which are needlessly large at times. Converting these particular files to JPEG can reduce their size to up to less than 20% of their original file size, while maintaining the same quality. This is important as working with hundreds of large images in word processors is pretty crash-prone. Batch converting all extracted PNGs to JPEGs is not an option I am willing to follow, as many if not most images are better suited to be formatted as PNGs. Converting these would result in insignificant size reductions and sometimes even increases in filesize - that's at least what my test runs showed. What we can take from this is that file size after compression can serve as an indicator on what format is suited best for a particular image. It's not a particularly accurate predictor, but works well enough. So why not use it in form of a script: I included inotifywait because I would prefer for the script be executed automatically as soon as I drag an extracted image into a folder. This is a simpler version of the script that I've been using for the last couple of weeks: #!/bin/bash inotifywait -m --format "%w%f" --exclude '.jpg' -r -e create -e moved_to --fromfile '/home/MHC/.scripts/Workflow/Conversion/include_inotifywait' | while read file; do mogrify -format jpg -quality 92 "$file" done The advanced version of the script would have to be able to handle spaces in file names and directory names preserve the original file names flatten PNG images if an alpha value is set compare the file size between the temporary converted image and its original determine if the difference is greater than a given precentage act accordingly The actual conversion could be done with imagemagick tools: convert -quality 92 -flatten -background white file.png file.jpg Unfortunately, my bash skills aren't even close to advanced enough to convert the scheme above into an actual script, but I am sure many of you can.   • DSL Modem with Wireless Router

    I have a D-Link WBR-1310 wireless router and a TP-Link TD-8616 DSL modem. My old DSL modem died recently and I got the TP-Link as a replacement. With my old DSL modem, I plugged it into the WAN port on my D-Link and I could reach the internet through wireless and through the network. However, when I plugged the new TP-Link into the WAN port, I was not able to get any internet connectivity (either on the network ports or through wireless). So I plugged my labtop directly into the TP-Link DSL modem and I was able to get internet connectivity. I'm trying to figure out why my labtop can see the internet connection, but not the D-Link router. I think that the problem is due to the IP networking. My D-Link was originally set to have IP address 192.168.1.1. According to the documentation for the TP-Link DSL modem, it uses 192.168.1.1 as its IP address. I do not believe that my old DSL modem had an IP address. I logged into my D-Link router and changed its IP address to 192.168.1.2 and restarted it. Unfortunately, I still could not see the internet from my wireless devices. I've read a few forum postings which implied that I needed to setup a "bridge" between the two networks. Does that sound correct? Why didn't my old DSL modem require a bridge? I read pg. 12-13 of my D-Link's manual and they suggest that I need to disable UPnP, DHCP, and then plug the DSL modem into one of the LAN ports on my router. I'm concerned about doing this since I don't think that the firewall will work if I plug my DSL modem into one of the LAN ports. I also have a home NAS on my network and I wouldn't want that to be available over the internet. Does anyone have any advice about how I can get my TPLink DSL modem to work with my D-Link router?   • windowsupdate troubles on windowsxp after april 2014, plus an explorer error message

    I've spent the last couple of days trying to install windows xp from a cd onto my desktop. The installtion is successful, and I can activate windows, but cannot run windows update. The error I receive from windows update is: Error number: 0x80240036 I understand that after april 2014 microsoft is no longer developing new patches, but I have presumed that customers would continue to have access to all the patches that where made up to this date. How can I install these patches? Is this possible? As mentioned, I can install windows and activate, but cannot run windowsupdate (Error number: 0x80240036). Seperately, there is an error with a windows explorer pull down menu (item) that asks: Is this copy of windows legal? How can I get rid of this message? I am not running a pirated, or illegal copy of windows and this message should not be there. I want continue running windows xp without windows update, but I need to get rid of this windows explorer error message.

  • What Remote Desktop Solution Do You Use To Service Your Clients' PCs? [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: What’s the best Remote Desktop Application? I am the owner of a local computer repair business that primarily services its clients on-site. On the occasions that we do service the machines in the office we generally have one of our techs pick the computer up while they are out and about and bring it back with them. Only rarely will we require the customer to bring us the computer themselves. In order to reduce costs, be much more efficient, and potentially expand our market far beyond what would be feasible with travel required; I am looking at ways that we can service our clients remotely whenever possible. What we're in need of is a solid remote desktop application that will be incredibly easy for our customers to connect to, as well as be robust enough that we don't need the client babysitting the computer during the entire repair. Ideally I would like to use a web-based solution so that we don't have to walk the customers through installing, connecting, and configuring it over the phone. This would be unacceptable because of the level of service they are used to. Effectively we'd want them to be able to just go to a URL, enter a PIN or something, and then they are connected and ready to rumble. (Obviously the option to just email them a link that'd do all this for them would be what we'd be aiming for) Along with the ease of use factor, we would need the product to not require any further intervention on the part of the client after we have connected. Nobody is going to be happy if we have to call them every 15 minutes so they can reconnect to us every time we reboot - so auto-reconnect is an absolute must. The only product I know of right now that does any of this is LogMeIn Rescue. It allows unattended access, the applet is lightweight and installs quickly, and the customer can either enter a PIN on the site or just click a link emailed to them in order to connect. The only real downside I see to LogMeIn Rescue is that it's $120.00/month per technician. While we'd ultimately end up saving far more than that per month just in fuel costs alone, I'd like to explore any other options out there that I may not have come across. Are there any equally good products out there? If so what are they, why do you recommend them, how have you been utilizing them yourself, and what do they cost?

  • Windows Question: RunOnce/Second Boot Issues

    I am attempting to create a Windows XP SP3 image that will run my application on Second Boot. Here is the intended workflow. 1) Run Image Prep Utility (I wrote) on windows to add my runonce entries and clean a few things up. 2) Reboot to ghost, make image file. 3) Package into my ISO and distribute. 4) System will be imaged by user. 5) On first boot, I have about 5 things that run, one of which includes a driver updater (I wrote) for my own specific devices. 6) One of the entries inside of HKCU/../runonce is a reg file, which adds another key to HKLM/../runonce. This is how second boot is acquired. 7) As a result of the driver updater, user is prompted to reboot. 8) My application is then launched from HKLM/../runonce on second boot. This workflow works perfectly, except for a select few legacy systems that contain devices that cause the add hardware wizard to pop up. When the add hardware wizard pops up is when I begin to see problems. It's important to note, that if I manually inspect the registry after the add hardware wizard pops up, it appears as I would expect, with all the first boot scripts having run, and it's sitting in a state I would correctly expect it to be in for a second boot scenario. The problem comes when I click next on the add hardware wizard, it seems to re-run the single entry I've added, and re-executes the runonce scripts. (only one script now as it's already executed and cleared out the initial entries). This causes my application to open as if it were a second boot, only when next is clicked on the add hardware wizard. If I click cancel, and reboot, then it also works as expected. I don't care as much about other solutions, because I could design a system that doesn't fully rely on Microsoft's registry. I simply can't find any information as to WHY this is happening. I believe this is some type of Microsoft issue that's presenting itself as a result of an overstretched image that's expected to support too many legacy platforms, but any help that can be provided would be appreciated.   • Java plugin in the browser doesn't work even though it is enabled

    I installed the Java Development Kit (64-bit) recently and saw it includes the JRE plugin for 64-bit as well. But, since Firefox is 32-bit, I also installed JRE 32-bit version. This is what is shown in Programs and Features. Now, the problem is, the other day, I opened a site which required the Java plugin. The frame showed the regular Java loading animation and hung. Nothing happened after that. Like this: I checked Firefox's plugins section and it shows Java is enabled, so no issue there I tried other browsers - IE10 and Chrome but to no avail. It doesn't work anywhere. I saw another question which said that you have to install 64-bit then 32-bit. That's what I actually did as well. First, installed JDK 7 64-bit (which includes JRE 7 64-bit) and then installed JRE 7 32-bit. I even tried the Java website's Do I have Java? section and over there too, it just keeps spinning for ages (I have waited for more than 10-20 seconds). How do I go about now? This never happened to me in Windows 7. I am on Windows 8 Pro.

For typing purposes I use two keyboards: The Inbuilt Laptop Keyboard A Standard External Desktop Grade USB Keyboard Since yesterday, My inbuilt keyboard's keys have gone all awry. This is Similar to http://superuser.com/questions/11537/keyboard-keys-not-working-or-resulting-in-the-wrong-key But the high point is that the external keyboard is working just fine. I have already tried System Restore, Reinstalling Keyboard Drivers etc. but to no avail. This is really bugging. Please Help. Thanks in Advance.

  • Cannot install Office 2003 Professional on a machine which formerly had 2003 Basic

    Hi to all, I have a problem with one of our PCs. I've inherited this PC and it's always had MS Office basic on it; the time has come to install our Access application on it, so I'm trying to install Office Professional 2003, the problem I have is the installer says the license key is invalid; I can only assume this is down to the fact that the PC used to have Office Basic installed. I've deleted the registration keys for the OFFICE11 section of the registry, but am still getting the problem... Any suggestions as to how to kill any trace of the old install would be appreciated - its' no longer showing up in the add/remove programs window.

    I'm using a Gigabyte GN-WPKG card on Windows 7 64-bit and was thinking it would be good to turn it into a wireless AP (I have a wired internet connection). Connectify, which would normally be the solution, says it's not compatible. There are instructions for setting up an AP, but they seem to be for 32-bit. I found the equivalent drivers for 7 and they don't seem to do anything. Is there no SoftAP for Vista and later on a Gigabyte card?

  • local app opening instead of ssh forwarded app over x

    i have a custom install of ubuntu 9.10 - xorg intel and its deps, icewm, xde and swiftfox from the swiftfox repos. I'm trying to start a ssh forwarded session of swiftfox from another system - which has the plain vanilla firefox version in the repos- with ssh -x [ipaddress] and then starting swiftfox from command line. When i start it though, it opens up the local copy of firefox instead of the copy of swiftfox on the other box. I have NO idea what's wrong...swiftfox dosen't open on the remote box, i am definately on the remote boxes terminal, and there's no way whatsoever it should open a local copy. I'm wondering what's wrong

  • Iverter, inverter cable, or a display cable?

    I was recently hired at a small repair shop. I work indoors while my boss does on site calls for small businesses. I have to troubleshoot and fix laptop screens a few times a week and this is why I'm posting this question. I'm having trouble figuring out how to stream line the troubleshooting process. For example, how do I determine whether the inverter is broken while also determining that the inverter cable is not. How can I quickly decide that the inverter cable is broken while knowing that the inverter is most likely not broke. Or how do I know that it's just the display cable? It seems like this is a good way to approach things: "It could be the inverter, backlight, or the LCD panel itself. Backlight failure is usually hinted at by a pink hue to everything. Inverter failure usually results in the dimming of images on the screen to the point where the backlight is not even on (the inverter provides power to the backlight)" Source. While remembering that things "like flickering, screen freeze in dark image and [a] corner starts to get brighter" point to a "failure in the LCD panel itself, though it could just as easily be a loose data cable connected to the back of the LCD." Source. In short, I'm soliciting advice that anyone might have on how to quickly make the best decision about what's causing problems with laptops display. Thank you.

  • Server and Network Lag

    At my home I have a server and my computer. Server has Windows Server 2008 Standart 64 bit installed and then my computer has Windows 7 64 bit installed. My home router is DIR-615 My server has a game server installed on it and basically total open connections on server are around 700. Once its around 700 server and then whole home network lags really badly. My internet connection is good and only around 600kb/s is being used out of 2mb/s (real download/upload speeds). So far I assume that my router has a connection limit and with server + my computer connections it peaks at around 1k and lags everything. Another assumption server lag comes from connection limit. On the internet I have read that standart version of server has connection limit of 700 + 10 reserved. I do not rmember where I found that information but it was on microsoft website. So I have two options. First is to upgrade my router to Netgear FVS318G-100 and second is to change connections limit on server. Any advices? Thank you

  • MP3 player no longer syncing

    I recently installed third-party drivers for the (Sony) PS3 controller on my friend's PC (Windows XP). I found out a few days later that his MP3 player (also Sony) is no longer recognized by Windows. He gets the "connect device" sound, and about 250ms later, the "disconnect device" sound. I figured the controller driver took over the Walkman's device ID, so I went through the registry and C:\Windows\inf removing all references to Sony's VID (054C), but I haven't had any luck. What would you do in this situation?

  • GRUB doesn't recognize partitions on one harddisk

    I have a dualboot computer with Windows Vista (on hd0) and Ubuntu 9.10. The bootloader is GRUB and the windows bootloader lets me decide between Vista and Ubuntu-Installation (broken WuBi). But now (i don't know why that changed) I can't use start the windows-bootloader anymore. I tried "ls" on the grub-prompt and it gave me a list like: (hd0) (hd1) (hd1,0) (hd1,1) (hd1,2) ... (fd0) It recognizes all partitions of hd1 (the ubuntu-harddisk) but not of hd0(the win-disk). .. WHY?   • How to tunnel a local port onto a remote server

    I have a domain that i bought from DynDNS. I pointed the domain at my ip adress so i can run servers. The problem I have is that I don't live near the server computer... Can I use an ssh tunnel? As I understand it, this will let me access to my servers. I want the remote computer to direct traffic from port 8080 over the ssh tunnel to the ssh client, being my laptop's port 80. Is this possible?
