  Azure itself is imo PaaS and not IaaS. Do you agree? MS gurantees an availability of 99% and a strong consistency. You can find MS SLAs here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsazure/sla (three SLAs Uptime: http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/4889/unbenanntqt.png ) I can't find anyhing about how they are going to archive that. Do they do backups? If Yes: How do they manage consistency? According to the Cap theorem (http://camelcase.blogspot.com/2007/08/cap-theorem.html ) their claims are not realistic. 2.1 Do you know detailed technical stuff about the how they are going to realize the claims about consistency and availability? On the MS page you'll find three SLAs .docs, one for SQL Azure, the second for Azure AppFabric/.Net Services and the third for Azure Compute&Storage.(Screenshot in 1.) How can one track whether SLAs are violated? Do they offer some sort of monitor, so I don't have to measure the uptime by myself?

  I would like to catch the error and show the appropriate message if the ajax request fails. It needs to choose from one of four different equations (with some specific parameters for each document). So far I have manage to create the whole document programmatically except the equation. • Handling database failover for Rails applications on FreeBSD

  I'm working on implementing database (Postgresql) failover for a Rails app that runs with Passenger/FreeBSD. Due to certain constraints regarding the server OS, it's necessary to continue using FreeBSD (as opposed to say, Ubuntu). I'm finding it to be quite a challenge to have failover handled within the Rails application, by way of a customised database adapter due to the fact that this application will be load-balanced between several webservers, and the multiple Rails processes that Passenger spawned in each webserver. I previously looked at setting up Pacemaker/Corosync to manage database server failover on a common IP but unfortunately I wasn't able to get past building the packages on FreeBSD. It does work rather well on Ubuntu 10.04 but I'm not likely to be able to use Ubuntu due to the OS constraints. I'm considering a custom witness daemon that simply pings the primary DB server, and this witness daemon switches all the webservers to the standby DB server when the primary becomes uncontactable (permanently/temporarily), to avoid split-brain. Though I would really like to know if there is a way to get Pacemaker(or something similar) to do the switch on FreeBSD.

  Hi All, I'm begginer in asp.net mvc and I have some doutbs about routes. Im' developing a system to manage documents and I need make an URL like this: routes.MapRoute("Documentos", "{controller}/{documentType}/{documento}/{action}/{id}", new { controller = "Home", documentType = "", documento = "", action = "Index", id = UrlParameter.Optional }); and the app working an URL like theses: "Document/Administrative/Contract" - (Index action by default to list documents of type 'Contract') "Document/Administrative/Contract/New" - (new action in controller) "Document/Administrative/Contract/10" - (detail action in controller) "Document/Administrative/Contract/Edit/10" - (edit action in controller) Document would be a Controller, and Administrative would be just a description in url to identify that documents of 'Contract' is Administrative... So, My doubts is about my controllers and actions, How should be the signature of the methods of controller ? Need I make an Area called Documents to do this more easy ? PS: Sorry for my english! • Code reviews for larger MVC.NET team using TFS

  I'm trying to find a good code review workflow for my team. Most questions similar to this on SO revolve around using shelved changes for the review, however I'm curious about how this works for people with larger teams. We usually have 2-3 people working a story (UI person, Domain/Repository person, sometimes DB person). I've recommended the shelf idea but we're all concerned about how to manage that with multiple people working the same feature. How could you share a shelf between multiple programmers at that point? We worry it would be clunky and we might easily have unintended consequences moving to this workflow. Of course moving to shelfs for each feature avoids having 10 or so checkins per feature (as developers need to share code) making seeing the diffs at code review time painful. Has anyone else been able to successfully deal with this? Are there any tools out there people have found useful aside from shelfs in TFS (preferably open-source)?

  Hi I'd like to get suggestions on the best way to serve python scripts up as web pages. Typically I'd like a way for me and my colleagues to write simple web pages with minimal effort ie we focus on the business logic eg creating simple forms etc. Possibly with some way to manage sessions but this is a nice-to-have. It doesn't have to be WYSIWYG as they are developers but we are busy and don't want to spend long turning an idea into reality. It's for internal use so appearances are not paramount. The software required to enable this should be easy to setup and configure. eg adding new directories and python lib dirs should be easy. My first instinct is apache or tomcat with mod_python. Any comments / suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance.

• passing user from UITableView to UIWebView based on selection

  Hello, I'm trying to pass the user on to the interface based on their cell selection in the UITableView, ie, if the user selects cell 1, they are taken to view model 2, containing UIWebView. UIWebView then displays local file, cell1.html. Currently, I've manage to get placeholder using: selectedCellText.text = selectedCell; to display the name of the cell selected. How do I get it to directly pass to the UIWebView, stick UIWebView in the interface and link it using: UIWebView *myWebView = [[UIWebView alloc] initWithFrame:frame]; NSBundle *mainBundle = [NSBundle mainBundle]; NSString *stringUrl = [mainBundle pathForResource:@"selectedCell" ofType:@"html"]; NSURL *baseUrl = [NSURL fileURLWithPath:stringUrl]; NSURLRequest *urlRequest = [NSURLRequest requestWithURL:baseUrl]; [myWebView loadRequest:urlRequest]; My other issue is that some of the cell names have spaces in them, and for simplicity, I'd like to ensure that there are no spaces (actually, will it even work with spaces in the name, I assume with %20 ? Personally, I also find it hard to motivate myself to keep healthy. Every now and again, I meet a fantastic coder who has it clocked; they are up to date with the latest dev news, have time to read about good programming practices, and to finish it off, have happy wives/husbands and families. How do you guys/gals manage it in the short 24 hours a day that we all have?

• Microsoft Team Foundation Equivalent stack.

  I am looking for a free alternative to TFS. What would be the best alternative stack(source control, bug tracking, project management/planning, wiki, automated builds (ci))? Keeping in mind that it would be nice if they all integrated well. For example, it would be nice to be able to link bugs to source control, and then be able to link to a project plan and then be able to automate building. I do not have issues with using Microsoft project to manage project planing. I know i would like to use these....: SVN TeamCity NUnit But i am struggling to find a good Wiki/Project Planning/Bug tracking, that would integrate well. Any questions let me know.

• Hibernate - hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto = validate

  I am interested in how hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto=validate actually works and I am struggling to find comprehensive documentation. We've recently discovered production system was affected by http://opensource.atlassian.com/projects/hibernate/browse/HHH-3532 (Hibernate matches foreign keys on name, rather than signature and so will recreate them for you) and hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto=update is being removed from our next release. I would be quite happy to just get rid of hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto altogether and manage our database ourselves. However, not all my colleagues share this world view and some are keen to add back in hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto=validate. I'm concerned this will hit the same problem and I'm interested in finding more documentation about how this validation actually works. The Hibernate Community Documentation (http://docs.jboss.org/hibernate/core/3.3/reference/en/html/session-configuration.html) really just makes reference to the values. Does anyone have any good documentation pointers, or any real life experience of using validate in a production system?

• How are interrupts handled by dual processor machines?

  I have an idea of how interrupts are handled by a dual core CPU. I was wondering about how interrupt handling is implemented on a board with more than one physical processor. Is any of the interrupt responsibility determined by the physical board's configuration? Each processor must be able to handle some types of interrupts, like disk I/O. Unless there is some circuitry to manage and dispatch interrupts to the appropriate processor? My guess is that the scheme must be processor neutral, so that any processor and core can run the interrupt handler. If a core is waiting on a disk read, will that core be the one to run the interrupt handler when the disk is ready?

  Im developing desktop java application using maven. I got a *.properties file that I need to retrive during execution (src/resources/application.properties). The only thing comes to my mind is to use: private Properties applicationProperties; applicationProperties.load(new BufferedInputStream(new FileInputStream("src/resources/application.properties"))); This would work if I run my application directly from IDE. I want to to keep outpout hierarchy clear, so I set maven to copy resources folder dircetly to target folder (which is a basedir for the output application). This way application.properties file won't load (since I have target/resources/application.properties but not target/src/resources/application.properties). What is the best way to manage resources so they work both when I debug from IDE and run builded jar file directly?

  I have an application the requires scrolling of many images. because I can not load all the images, and save it in the memory, I am lazy loading them.   I have a form which a user can fill in x times with the data they want too. The form is posted to the following Action. However the view holds the data from the previously submitted form. Any ideas why? I have debugged the code and checked that the RetModel variable is empty.

• Facebook connect JavaScript with PHP

  I'm using the JavaScript method to sync/login (with the popup) with Facebook Connect on my site, it seems to work. However, after I get logged in, I want to continue in backend, with the PHP library. I see the cookies are set by the JavaScript lib, but I don't know how to use them with the PHP api. I used $fb = new Facebook($api_key, $secret); $uid = $fb->get_loggedin_user(); but not user data is getting passed. How can I get the user data in PHP after I logged in in frontend? As far as I'm concerned, I would have gone PHP all the way, but I didn't manage to make the auth work, meaning that in never redirected me back to my site :). Thanks!

  I'm working on an application that uses both coarse and fine grained multi-threading. That is, we manage scheduling of large work units on a pool of threads manually, and then within those work units certain functions utilize OpenMP for finer grain multithreading. We have realized gains by selectively using OpenMP in our costliest loops, but are concerned about creating contention for the OpenMP worker pool as we add OpenMP blocks to cheaper loops. Is there a way to signal to OpenMP that a block of code should use the pool if it is available, and if not it should process the loop serially?

• Works using Django development server, but throws import error with Apache using mod_wsgi

  I have a Django project that works fine with the development server that comes with it. No errors are produced at all when I use "django manage.py runserver" and the app works fine, but when I try to use it with mod_wsgi and Apache the browser displays "Internal Server Error" with a 500 error code and it generates an import error in the Apache error log. Here's the error in the log: ImportError: No module named registration I'm using the Django registration module which is located in a path like this: /opt/raj/photos/registration I know that the registration app is in the path because I can fire up a Python shell, import sys, and get a list of paths using sys.path. Here are some of the paths output from Python shell: sys.path ['', '/opt/raj/pyamf', '/opt/raj', '/opt/raj/pictures', '/opt/raj/pictures /registration', '/usr/lib/python2.6',....] Any thoughts would be appreciated.

• Combine DVCS with Visual Source Safe

  I'm forced to use Visual Source Safe 2005 at work. I'd like to combine that with a DVCS, so that I can check in files locally without disrupting my co-workers if there's a bug or it doesn't compile. In my attempts with Mercurial, it works, but causes a few weird issues. Namely, it thinks someone else has checked out the files I have checked out. Here's my thoughts on how I should manage it: Disable auto-checkout. Work locally in Mercurial When I'm ready to push my changes... Clone my Mercurial repository. Update my Visual Source Safe repository Pull and merge the two repositories using Mercurial. Check everything into Visual Source Safe. Does this sound reasonable? I'm always hearing bad things about VSS, is this just asking for me to see those problems firsthand?

• Wondering how Facebook does the "Mutual friends" feature

  Hello, I'm currently developing an application to allow students to manage their courses, and I don't really know how to design the database for a specific feature. The client wants, a lot like Facebook, that when a student displays the list of people currently in a specific course, the people with the most mutual courses are displayed first. As an additional feature, I would like to add a search feature to allow students to search for another one, and displaying first in the search results the people with most mutual courses. I currently use MySQL, I plan to use Cassandra for some other features, and I also use Memcached for result caching. Thanks.
