• Size limit while using UICollectionView as tiled map for iOS game?

  I'm working on a turn-based strategy game for iOS, (picture Civilization 2 as a template example), and I'm considering using a UICollectionView as my game map. Each cell would be a tile, and I could use the "didSelectCell" method to handle player interaction with each tile. Here's my question: I know that UICollectionViewCells are dequeued and reused by the OS, so does that mean that the map could support an effectively infinitely-large map, so long as only a few cells are onscreen at a time? However many cells were onscreen would be held in memory, and obviously the data source would take up some memory, but would my offscreen map be limited to a certain size or could it be enormous so long as the number of cells visible at any one time wasn't too much for the device to handle? Basically, is there any memory weight to offscreen cells, or do only visible cells have any impact? Also, does a UICollectionView seem like a bad idea for a game map, in a way I haven't thought of yet? It seems like it work well, but I haven't tried it yet so any thoughts are welcome.

• How can I disable usb-autosuspend for a specific device?

  This is related to the issue discussed in this question. Summary: the mouse freezes when operating on battery since it is autosuspended after a certain time and needs more time to wake up. Disabling usb-autosuspend for the mouse's receiver in powertop is a temporary solution but does not survive a reboot. How can I permanently disable the usb autosuspend for only one specific device? A solution that does not involve installing additional packages is preferred (after all, I want to disable something) but not required. Removing powertop (which seems to be a solution for some) is not what I want - I like poertop... And installing laptop-mode-tools to disable usb_autosuspend alltogether is not what I want, either, thus the new question. Also: will this affect the battery of my notebook? The logitech unifying receiver for the mouse stays connected all the time, so if that prevents the autosuspend from happening for all devices that would probably be bad.

• Staying focussed - Any applications to monitor what windows are open, record the titles and then tell you what you spend you day doing?

  I am bad at procrastination. I'm always opening new tabs to check out HackerNews or something. So I've installed StayFocussed on Chromium, so that I can't view more than X minutes of certain sites. Is there something like this for the Ubuntu Desktop? It would work with applications, not websites (obviously). I would like an application that would monitor what windows I have open or visible, and limit me to only certain applications. Maybe give warnings if I spend to much time looking at IRC or something. Is there any applications for that?

• How to reset settings when Unity won't finish booting?

  I have a new 12.04 installation and I messed things up after trying to move /home to an NTFS partition, which I later learned was a bad idea. I removed references to the NTFS partition on fstab and created new users on the ext4 / partition. Now I can't get Unity to start up properly for any user. I get the GUI with only three Launch icons (none of which are clickable) and no bar at the top. The keyboard seems to the nonfunctional after I enter my credentials. The interesting thing is that I can boot when I go through recovery mode and select resume. I wonder whether I am creating the new users properly. What is the correct protocol for doing so in order to ensure that they can run Unity?

• Does Google treat AWS IP addresses as related?

  We are hosting several websites on one of our servers, and wondering if because they are on the same subnet that they have been somehow penalized. We are not inter-linking between websites. However in an attempt to have everything hosted in AWS, we will have some sites that we do want to be interlinked. If the sites resided on the same subnet, this could be bad. However, with AWS, we can allocate multiple elastic IP addresses that do reside on different subnets. How does Google deal with this?

• How to stop camera from rotating in 2.5d platformer

  I'm stuck with a problem: I can not make my camera stop rotating after character. What I already have tried: using empty game object with rigid body and locked rotation and make it parent of camera, while player being the parent of object. Also, I've tried using few scripts from web, that did not help. Right now I'm bad with using JS in Unity (can handle JS on website, but I dont know how to integrate it for now) and practicing the basics, making easy 2.5d platformer with basic features, so I can not write code for now.

  I have written a small front-end to the Festival TTS system using Python/Django. I wish to deploy it on the Google App Engine cloud. A few questions: My application uses the Festival app 'text2wave'. Will is work on the cloud? I have used Python primitives like subprocess.call() to invoke the aforementioned program. Will that work? If your answer to any or both of (1) and (2) is no, is there a free api on the web that I can use (from the appengine)? I read somewhere about placing calls from Phono to a Voxeo backend, but I'm not sure what that means. I am aware of the Google Translate extension that allows translation using an HTTP GET (REST) request, but here the text is limited to 100 chars. Bad. Plus, they may take it down any point of time.

• Installing Solaris Studio 12.2 on Ubuntu 10.04

  I'm having a dickens of a time installing Solaris Studio 12.2 on Ubuntu 10.04. I found this guide, however using the alien option isn't finding the correct files. I'm not exactly sure on the syntax of alien, its kinda alien to me. (sorry for the bad pun) Also, when I download the tar file, and extract it, there are errors everytime saying things like: "operation not permitted" cannot creat symlink to '../prod/bin/cc': Operation not permitted I've extracted with super user access, but to no avail. Any success from anyone else?

• Partitioning: SSD + HDD Encrypted

  I have a new computer and thinking about partitioning. Situation is this: 60GB SSD 1TB HD On my laptop I'm using full encryption but what do you suggest for encryption? I heard, encryption is bad for SSDs. So I first thought of making SSD / and HDD als /home/ but then I'd be losing advantages of the SSD. Because all config-files would be on the HDD. Other way would be: SSD: / 15 GB unencrypted /home encrypted HDD: 1TB and store Pictures & Music on HDD and link the folders. But that would leave my personal files unencrypted. Also what's about SWAP? What would you suggest for partitioning?

• Can't boot without Flash Drive plugged in

  (Sorry for my bad English) I had Ubuntu 12.04 Beta installed on my computer. When 12.04 was finally released, I made a bootable USB Flash Drive using Startup Disk Creator. Then I decided to check if this drive works properly and to reinstall the system on my desktop. I must add, my desktop behaves a bit strange when it comes to bootable USB's, it recognizes them as HDD. In BIOS I changed priority of boot so USB Flash Drive (recognized as HDD) was first. Successfully booted, I installed Ubuntu. Everything worked fine, but... Now I cannot boot from my real HDD. Every time I want to boot, I put the USB Flash Drive into my computer, boot, safely remove it and everything works. What have I to do, to repair boot? Thank you for your time!

  Hey, I'm working for a company full-time and myself part-time. I started learning the Mac OS/Cocoa/Objective-C at work, and then I got the "Brilliant Idea" that I'd like to program for the iPhone. The iPhone stuff is going well, but I'm earning money there because I'm applying skills I learned on the job. What is commonly considered violating company policy on things like this? Is there any danger of the company claiming 'ownership' of my side-job? If I leave the company, could they ask me to stop working at my side business? The company and my iphone stuff are in completely different "areas" but I'm still concerned. What can I do to make sure? What else should I be wary of? Has anyone run into bad stuff like this before? • Developing an ELO like point system for a multiplayer gaming site

  I'm currently working on a gaming site where users will submit virtual players for different games, like Chess, Nash, Backgammon, Go, etc. The idea is that users don't compete themselves, but through their virtual players. There will be leagues, tournaments, and other competition formats. The question is which would be a good rating system for users in this environment. Take into account that every user may have many different virtual players playing in many different games. As a general guideline I would like to guarantee the following properties: Users who have a lot of mediocre players should not score higher than users with a few very good players. A user with a high rating should not be penalized if he adds a new bad player, until he has had enough time to improve his player. • How can I play a DVD-A (DVD-Audio) disc?

  I was able to play such a disc using VLC, but I am wondering if any music player supports the DVD-A format. UPDATE: I checked Rhythmbox and Banshee - I found no option like Play Disc or Open Disc, so I have no idea how I could even try to start playing a DVD-A disc. This has also nothing to do with missing plug-ins or codecs - the packages gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly, gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad and ubuntu-restricted-extras were installed on my machine before. I guess I am stuck with VLC (Totem shows a DVD menu, but then hangs). However, I am missing the regular music player experience - ability to change order of tracks, adding tracks to a playlist, listening only to selected tracks, etc. I found Idea #22415: Please add full support for DVD-Audio and LPCM at Ubuntu Brainstorm.

• SQL Azure and Trust Services

  Microsoft is working on a new Windows Azure service called “Trust Services”. Trust Services takes a certificate you upload and uses it to encrypt and decrypt sensitive data in the cloud. Of course, like any security service, there’s a bit more to it than that. I’ll give you a quick overview of how you can use this product to protect data you send to SQL Azure. The primary issue with storing data in the cloud is that you are in an environment that isn’t under your control – in fact, that’s the benefit of being in a distributed computing environment in the first place. On premises you’re able to encrypt data you don’t want anyone else to see, using various methods such as passwords (not very strong) or certificates (stronger). When you use a certificate, it’s vital that you create (or procure) and protect it yourself. When you store data remotely, regardless of IaaS, PaaS or SaaS, you don’t own the machines where the data lives. That means if you use a certificate from the cloud vendor to encrypt the data, you have to trust that the data won’t be accessed by the vendor. In some cases having a signed agreement with the vendor that they won’t access your data is sufficient, in other cases that doesn’t meet the requirements your system has for security. With the new Trust Services service, the basic process is that you use a Portal to create a Trust Server using policies and other controls. You place a X.509 Certificate you create or procure in that server. Using the Software development Kit (SDK), the developer has access to an Application Layer Encryption Framework to set fields of data they want to encrypt. From there, the data can be stored in SQL Azure as a standard field – only it is encrypted before it ever arrives. The portion of the client software that decrypts the data uses the same service, so the authenticated user sees the data if they are allowed to do so. • How do I Fallback to Older DirectX Versions?

  I had a feeling that it would be easier to tackle this problem before I got too deep into development (unless, of course if that's a bad idea/the hard way, please inform me...). I'm creating my game to be run ideally on DirectX 11, however, I want to offer it on DirectX 10, and I'm unsure if it is worth offering it for DirectX 9 for XP users. I'm not too sure how this fallback even works, as I can't find many articles on the internet. If someone could give me an in-depth article, that would be great. I've read a little about how since DirectX11 is completely absent on XP, it is hard to even check for support. Someone mentioned having multiple applications for each version, is this a good idea?   Daylight saving time is a big annoyance for me. Not just from the standpoint, that I never know when we set our clocks an hour ahead or an hour back. Setting the clock ahead or back disturbs my time organization, and is responsible for my bad mood around that day. From the standpoint of a programmer, it's no less annoying. you always have to check whether it isn't "that date" in the year, when you have to work with local time. I hear people have the same views on this that I have. also, I don't see any benefits from it. The supposedly added "extra hour" of sunlight; I don't feel that. In case you live in a region where daylight savings is observed (like in Germany, where I live), please tell me how you manage the annoyances that come with it, and (if possible) how to get rid of it, once and for all...

• Can't set permissions for files on an NTFS partition

  I remember that I was able to run a Linux .exe that was placed on an NTFS partition earlier before I installed 10.10 RC. But if I try to run it now, I can't run it as it hasn't the execution permission. The bad part is that I can't change the permissions too. I'm chmod-ding +x but no change at all with its permissions. So this seems to be a bug? Any help? Though when I put it on ext4 partition, I can set the permission. But I want to do this as I did before, right from its default NTFS location.
