• XFS and loss of data when power goes down

  Each time electricity goes down, my desktop (without UPS) loses some temporary information. Opera can lose settings, history, cache, or mail accounts (Thanks heavens I was wise to use IMAP). Partially or all together. a whole file (complete and save) in Geany appeared empty (and I didn't commit it to Git) rhythmbox lost all podcasts subscription data I'm afraid there are other losses I just didn't see. What's the reason? A memory files cache, a mem-disk? Or non-atomic file writes in xfs? I have Ubuntu 9.10 and XFS on both / and /home partitions. Is ext4 safer in such circumstances? I've seen ext3 is faster. Is it as safe as *4? Given that the apartment I rent is connected to a common bus and 1 safety switch for several apartments, and the neighbors - alone or together - overload it at least once every week, the lights go down often enough for this to be an issue.

• New CAT5 cable run is unstable - bad jacks? Bad cable?

  This is a little project I'm doing at home. I wanted to wire two rooms together (basically, the router is one room, and the switch is in the second room). So I ran a CAT5 between the two rooms, and wired an RJ45 jack in each room. I then hooked up the two jacks with two CAT5 cable to run it through the cable tester, and all 8 wires seem good. Now, when I connect the switch and the router, the connection is unstable -- I ping the router and it barely holds on for two pings before it disconnects, and stays in that unstable state. Just to make sure the router and the switch are ok, I connected them with long wire between the two rooms and the connection is absolutely stable, and pings continuously. What could be the cause for the unstable connection? Especially that it pings a few times, so there IS a connection. But why is it unstable? And how come the cable tester says it's ok, but it's unstable?

• Dlink DIR-615 suddenly stops working - Orange internet light

  I unplugged my Dlink DIR-615 router last night from the wall due to a storm rolling in. I've done this countless times, no problem. However, when I went to plug it in and use the internet today, nothing. Check everything, cycled everything. Hard reset the router, nothing. The little globe on the front is red/orange, and it should be green. Windows gives me an error of a "DNS Issue", and the internet works when connected directly to the modem. How can I fix this issue? Why would it suddenly stop working?

  I would like an old desktop box to use my laptop as a router to access the internet. Here is my setup: I have one ethernet port in the side of my laptop which I want to use to get internet access to my desktop computer. The laptop is connected to the LAN via a wireless link. Both systems run Linux. The desktop autoconfigures itself using DHCP. The laptop is a Kubuntu system. I do not have any crossover cables, though wireshark on the laptop sees the DHCP requests from the desktop just fine, so I doubt that I need one. What do I have to do to make this work?

  I'm using Windows 8.1 Pro with HyperV. I have several VMs for development, all of them connected with host via Internal adapter using network addresses: 192.168.10.0/24 Where: 192.168.10.1 is my host's Hyper-V internal NIC address. When I'm not in my office I use 3G usb dongle an dialup VPN connection. I would like to route traffic from all existing and future VMs through the VPN. In best scenario traffic would be routed only partially to the local company network addresses 10.1.1.0/24 I don't want to use sharing because I'm switching between WiFi, USB 3G dongle and VPN. Moving to other virtualization is also not an option for me.

• 802.11N Windows XP Clients Unable to See Each Other

  I am attempting to update my wireless network from 802.11g to 802.11n. When connected to the 'G' access point, the client laptops (there are 7 running Windows XP) are able to connect and browse the network for each other. When I connect them to the 'N' access point they can see the access point, but not the rest of the network. I tried swapping out the access point with a wireless router, but this did not change anything. I verified in both the AP and the router that isolation was turned off. Searching the web has not turned up any other ideas. The manuals don't show anything either. Why can't my wireless client nodes see each other on the 'N' network?

• Linux and GeForce 8400 dual monitor

  I'm trying to install a linux distribution on my PC. I have a GeForce 8400 GS with two connected monitors. I tried with Fedora 12 and Ubuntu 9.10 (both 64 and 32 bit) and the live cd cannot boot properly. I don't get a visible error on Ubuntu, it simply hangs up during the boot. With Fedora I get this error: [drm] Modeset on unsupported output type [drm] Table 0x0000 not found for 1/1 using first I tried to disconnect one of the two monitor and was able to install on my HD and boot from there, but if I try to connect the second monitor again I cannot boot. Do I need to install something else? (a driver for my video card for example).

• Win7 to Win7 Remote Desktop Not working, Xp to 7 working fine

  Hello, I have a small home network and recently i tried to enable remote desktop for one of the pc's. I have a mix of Windows 7, Windows Vista and Xp runing alongside ubuntu, centos and others (some virtual, some real). I have a few Windows 7 pc`s that can be connected to using remote desktop from inside and outside the network (port redirects on routers, etc, etc) and some Xp ones. The trouble is when i tried to do the same thing to a Win7 laptop i discovered i can't connect to it from another win7 pc inside the home network. To sum it up Working: xp -- win7 not working: win7 -- win7 What i tried - disable and enable remote desktop (my computer - remote settings) - removing and adding users to the remote settings window - adding a new user to the machine, administrator or 'normal' user - checking the firewall settings on the machine and set 'allow' to remote desktop for both 'home/work' and 'public'networks Any tips on what should i do next? It displays ' .. secure connection' and after that the window with 'Your security credentials did not work' and it lets me try again with another user/password..

• Using GlusterFS for simple replication

  Hi, newbie question. I need to build this: /shared folder ~500GB of files, ~1MB each one. Two boxes (server1 and server2) connected by a 1Gbs LAN Every box needs to get r/w access to the files, so their are both clients I want that the files replicated on both boxes, every time a file is written in one server the same file should be present in the other one. My questions regarding GlusterFS: It'll duplicate the files on the same box?. For example the files are on /shared and the mount in /mnt/shared. It'll take 1GB space on every server? Instead, should I use the filesystem directly, locally writing on /shared? Does the replication work in this way without mountin a client? Also, if anyone know any other way to acomplish this setup I'll be very grateful. Thanks in advance.

• How to disable "Automatically search for drivers and install" in Windows 7

  I connected my TI-89 to my Windows 7 system, and apparently it is not plug-and-play. There was a link to a Windows configuration setting made available that gave the option to automatically search their windows site for drivers and automatically install them each time i connect an unrecognized device. Well, I selected that link with the intention of it being temporary and just that one time. That didnt work and the location/install of a driver was not successful. How can I reset that setting to not automatically install whatever drivers it thinks might be fitting? I cannot find that configuration setting when I looked for it recently.

• Forgot to unmount/eject external hdd, lost moved files. OSX

  So I was using my mac with my external hard drive connected via USB. I moved about 10gigs of data to it (via drag and drop while holding command to move the files rather than to copy them). They moved to the drive alright, but as I was having some issues and finder crashed after the transfer, I was unable to eject the volume and later everything froze so I had to do a hard restart (hold the power button). When I remounted the volume (plugged the external hdd back in) it no longer had any of the files which I moved onto it. How can I recover these files, as it was a lot of data! Cheers.

• Cannot import video from a DV camcorder over FireWire

  I have a JVC GR-D320 miniDV camcorder that has a FireWire interface. I recently upgraded to Windows 7 RTM (64 bit, fresh installation). When I connect my camcorder through FireWire, I can see it in Device Manager without any warnings or problems, but I cannot capture videos from my miniDV tapes. After connecting, AutoPlay displays "Import Video could not find a compatible digital video device. Verify that the digital video device is properly connected and turned on." When using Windows Live Photo Gallery after selecting the import option, my camera is not listed. The camera used to work perfectly on the same hardware before upgrading to Windows 7 RTM 64 bit (it used to work fine on Windows XP SP3 32 bit). Googleing revealed that people had the exact same problems in Vista, but no solution was provided. Any help?

• Acer Aspire 3680 Wireless Signal Problem

  I am using Acer Aspire 3680. I recently reinstalled Windows Vista, and the wireless did not work by default. I installed the "Atheros Wireless LAN Driver" on this site: http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_3680.html The result, the wireless APs are successfully scanned. However, when I tried to join a network, even with 5/5 signal, an error message showed up diagnosing signal too little. I restarted as Ubuntu, and wireless worked perfectly, with same computer position. Even more confusing, When I moved to the kitchen (2 meters close to the router), the wireless connected, when I move back to my room, wireless failed on Vista and worked on Ubuntu. It is clearly the driver problem. Acer laptops seems come with pre-installed drivers, but after re-installation, they are all gone. (I can't find the original Acer backup disc) Please do not answer "move closer to the AP" and something related to "interference", as wireless worked with Ubuntu's default driver.

Servers will have 256GB of RAM. I need your help to figure out what to do with CPUs and cores. Options: 2 CPUs (2.3 GHz) with 16 cores each 4 CPUs (3.0 GHz) with 8 cores each Question: Which one should I pick? P.S. Next year, we will migrate from Oracle to SQL server. I hope, whatever option you recommend will work for both platforms

• Is it possible to install Canon EOS T3 Camera Drivers on Windows 7 Embedded

  I have a computer running Windows 7 Embedded. It's an embedded system that will be used in a industrial setting. It needs to be connected to a Canon EOS camera and download pictures from the camera. Other versions of windows come with the Canon drivers so Canon does not provide them as a download on their website. In the past, I had a similar issue with the "N" version of Microsoft Windows Starter and had to download the "Microsoft Media Feature Pack" which then installed the drivers. I attempted to install that on this device, but understandably it complains that its not applicable for this version of windows. So, is there there a feature pack or some other sort of download available that will install the camera drivers? Alternatively, is there some place to get the drivers and manually install them. • NET VIEW occasionally does not show all computers

  I am having an issue on my workstation, where periodically the NET VIEW command does not seem to work. Most times, NET VIEW will return a list of all the machines connected to our domain. Occasionally, it will only list 4 or 5 (instead of the usual 200+). The only way I've found to remedy it is by rebooting my machine. I am running Windows XP Pro, the Domain Controller is running Server 2003. What could be causing this, and how can I remedy it? Thanks!

  I am hosting a mysql server in a debian 6.0.4 server hosted in linode, the new data is frequently written into the mysql server using R, about 30-40 "write" per minute, about 7 hours a day, 5 days a week. Recently I found that the mysql server seem to down frequently, always give me error that mysql server cannot be connected through socket. I wonder if this is caused by my high demand to my mysql server, and if this can be solved. I am definitely a newbie in manage server.   I want to stream data from my Laptop PC to my Android phone using TCP or UDP by creating sockets in both the phone and the laptop, but it has to be done wirelessly. How do I connect them to stream the data ? I thought creating an ad-hoc wireless network from my laptop and connecting to it using my Android would work. But my Android is not detecting the ad-hoc network. Is there any other way how I can connect the two ? I downloaded this software called 'connectify' and created a wifi hotspot on my laptop, and successfully connected the two. But will I be able to stream data to my device using this connection ? Can simple direct Bluetooth connection help me in creating sockets in both phone and laptop and stream the data ?

• Extend my LAN network

  i have a patch panel and hardwiring already setup in my office. The patch panel is 24-port and all the ports are engaged. All my switch ports are engaged. Now, I have a printer connected to a wall point (RJ45) which I want to shift to a new room where there is no LAN setup. I want to have two RJ45 wall plugs in the new room so that I can connect one RJ45 port to have my LAN in the new room and the other RJ45 wall port I want to use for my printer. There is no option other than LAN (no wireless). Please help me and tell me how do I get the two RJ45 wall plate plugs in the new room up and keep my LAN running. It is a little urgent for me.   Hi, I have got this Huawei wifi device, which has been unlocked for other networks. Works fine in UK on Vodafone (as well as 3). We are trying to get it to work with the Claro network in Jamaica. It connects and stays connected, but fails to get a 3g connection, just the slow EDGE one. Claro support say its because Claro currently does not support the 2100MHz frequency for 3G, which is what the device uses Does that sound correct? They say I need one that: Ensure however that these devices can use the 850MHz frequency. My understanding was that the device supports up to 2100, including their 850mhz...   Would like to have connectivity between azure virtual machines and on LAN users. My current network has a Cisco ISA550 connected to the WAN (one Ethernet cable into the office the fiber transceiver is on a different floor)and any public servers can be one-to one NAT-ed to have a public and private IP. What is the best way to get a reliable connection. Between end users and the cloud? I want to know the preferred on site endpoint. Do the azure vm's have to have a local ip in the LAN subnet? (Right now 10.10.0.0/20 or 255.255.240.0 to give room if this is the case). If in purchased an asa550 would I put it behind or in front of the isa550. Would it be ahead or peer with the users switches? What is the best way to get a reliable connection. Between end users and the cloud servers?

  For a LAN, instead of a switch, I have built a topology where each machine is connected to a router. Each host is assigned an IP address from 10/8. Here are the interface details: Lets say I ping 10.16.0.3 from this host. The routing table of 10.16.0.2 has been configured to use the router (10.16.0.1) as the default gateway. But since the destination IP address (10.16.0.3) is in the same subnet it sends out an ARP broadcast. I want to disable this behavior of sending an ARP broadcast and instead force it to use the routing table. How do I accomplish this?

• Remote Desktop connection repeatedly aborting

  I connect to my workplace computer using Remote Desktop. After 1-2 minutes the application freezes to tell me after one more minute that the connection was aborted. It then reconnects. Everything works again for 1-2 minutes. Then the process repeats. Probably Forever. My coworkers do not experience such problems when connecting to the workplace. My workplace computer: Windows 7 32bit My home computer: Windows 7 64bit connected to the internet via WLAN-router with integrated ADSL modem (Linksys WAG200G) Things I already tried to fix the problem: disabled the Windows firewall disabled the other firewall reduced the MTU upgraded the firmware on the router configured port-forwarding to forward all packets to my home computer The problem remains unchanged. • Cannot Get Sound Over HDMI in Windows 7

  Windows 7 has been really good to me, I never needed to install any drivers & that included sound. Win7 took care of all that, but because of that I don't have any extra controls. Just the native Windows sound controls. I connected my LCD and PC using the HDMI, works great with video but the sound seems to stick with the PC speakers. My friend somehow solved this in Vista, but to port the sound to the LCD, he always had to restart the computer, which I found really weird and never made me interested to even know how he did that. There has to be way to do this easily. Please let me know if anyone else had the same problem & solved it somehow. Thanks!

• Why is my router assigning the wrong address via DHCP

  I have a WRT54G router that is set up to serve out addresses via DHCP. It correctly serves up addresses to every other machine on the network, including another PC, my macbook when connected via wireless, my wife's notebook, and our printer. However, whenever I attach my macbook to the router via an ethernet cable, the address it is given via DHCP is wrong. My local network is set up as 192.168.1.*. However, when my macbook connects with an ethernet cable, it is given the IP 192.168.29.*. Currently, I have the macbook set up with a manual IP address, and all seems to be working fine. Any ideas on what could be causing this?
