• What good practices, if any, has the agile movement lost?

  I am a long time agile advocated but one of the things that bothers me about Agile is that a lot of agile practitioners, especially the younger ones, have thrown out or are missing a whole lot of good (non Scrum, non XP) practices. Alistair Cockburn's style of writing Use Cases springs to mind; orthogonal arrays (pairwise testing) is another. I hope this is an okay forum to ask this, but since I read mostly Agile related books and articles and work with mostly Agile folk ... is there anything I'm missing? Thanks for all your help. • crontab won't work on mac 10.6.7

  i create a simple cron job by editing /etc/crontab as following: */2 * * * * * php /Users/min/Documents/testcron.php and the testcron.php is simple as: <?php $fd = fopen("/Users/min/Documents/testcron.txt", 'a'); fwrite($fd, "test--cron--\n"); fclose($fd); ?> then simply save the crontab file and hope magic happen, but nothing happened. i even run the command manually and it worked. php /Users/min/Documents/testcron.php anyone have any idea? • StackOverflow WordPress Plugin: Sidebar Widget [closed]

  I used the idea from "StackOverflow badge to show in your blog" from here to develop a small WordPress plugin to show your SO reputation and badges on your WordPress weblog sidebar. It's awfully lacking some graphic design, style, color, etc. I also thought of adding the user avatar, and images for the different badges. But it's working so far, and it's pretty late and I have to get some sleep. But I'll add the stuff I mentioned tomorrow. That was quite an interesting PHP challenge. • using subset but old variables still left

  I am working with a data set, which is basically daily usage data (let's just say variable X and Y) by different cities (about 150 cities). I have created a subset of data for only specific cities, choosing just 3 of the 150 cities. Then when I do tapply by cities, I get means for 3 cities but also get NA for all other 147 cities that was in the data set. I am using the below coding df<-read.csv(...) df_sub<-subset(df,df$City==1|df$City==3|df$City==19) X_Breakdown<-tapply(X,df_sub$City, mean, na.rm=TRUE) Print(X_Breakdown) City 1 City 2 15 NA City 3 City 4 12 NA City 5 City 6 NA NA Hope you get the idea. I would like to get a dataset that only contains the 3 cities that I'm interested in. It seems that the set of variables is encoded in R, is there a way to fix this? Kindly advise. Thanks

• Calculate open timeslots given availability and existing appointments - by day

  Overview: I have a table which stores a persons "availability" for a current day, e.g. Mon - 8:00am - 11:30am Mon - 1:30pm - 6:00pm A second table stores appointments that this person already has for the same day, e.g. Mon - 8:30am - 11:00am Mon - 2:30pm - 4pm Desired result: Doing calculationsI'd like to have the following result - e.g. "this person has availability on the given day": Mon - 8:00am - 8:30am Mon - 11:00am - 11:30am Mon - 1:30pm - 2:30pm Mon - 4:00pm - 6:00pm Any ideas on how to calculate the output given the two inputs (e.g. availability, existing appointments) would be greatly appreciated. Preferably I'd use javascript on the client to do the calculating as I would believe that doing it within the DB (I'm using MSSQL) would be slow for many records, persons, etc. Hope this is enough information to illustrate the problem at hand - Many thanks in advance.

• Problem in serializing

  Hello Guyz, Presently I need to serialize one of my object which contains more my own classes object. But the problem is I dont want to save it in a file and then retrieve it into memory stream. Is there any way to directly serialize my object into stream. I used BinaryFormatter for seializing. First I used a MemoryStream directly to take serialize output but it is giving error at time of deserialization. But later when I serialize it with a file then close it and again reopen it , it works perfectly. But I want to take it direct into stream because in my program I need to do it frequently to pass it into network client. And using file repeatedly might slow down my software. Hope I clear my problem. Any Sugetion ?

  Hi, hope someone can help me on learning some new stuff about delegates in iOS-programming. I have a "MainViewController" which is the first VC when the app starts. I´ve a kind of modelselection with different UIImageViews and after choosing one of them, i´m pushing a new VC. I want to handle the modelChoice with a delegate, so all other viewControllers can listen to that and act based on the users choice. But does that mean that i have to alloc a new instance of that "MainViewController" in every VC? Whats the solution on that? How do i create (i think its called) static delegate? • Question about domain models & their visibility...

  I was involved in an interesting debate about the visibility of domain models & was wondering if people here have any good guidance. Per my understanding of MDA, we need not expose the domain model throughout the application layers & tiers The reason being that any change to the domain model has an impact in the overall application The wise thing to do would be to expose light-weight object (DTO's) which are a small sub-set of the domain model to abstract the actual model On the flip side, any change to the domain model would mean changing various DTO's throughout the application for the change to be visible, while if we do expose the domain model, then the change is in a single location Hope to see some comments & thoughts about this. • PHP save a page then redirect to previous page(ajax)

  Dear all, I would like to ask for how to redirect to previous page (ajax paging). Example, Let's say currently I am in page 5, then I click on one record, after I edit it, I would like to go back to that page 5 not page 1. The problem is my paging is using ajax, http://domain/photo/#5 I try to use $_SERVER[http_referer], but I only get http://domain/photo , I not able to get # and the value. What is the best way to redirect back to the previous paging. My last choice is using $_SESSION. Hope I can get better answer here. Thx.

  Hi All, I'm working in Ubuntu with MySql and I also have Query Browser and Administrator installed, I'm not afraid of the command line either if it helps. I want simply to be able to run a query and see a result set but then convert that result set into a series of commands that could be used to create the same rows in a table of an identical schema. I hope the question makes sense, it's quite a simple problem and one that must have been solved but I can't for the life of me work out where this kind of conversion is made available.   I have a form with 3 sections in it. Each section has a dedicated div for fairly long contextual help messages regarding the input that has focus. My question is, if I give each of these help divs a class of "form-tip" and each input that has a tip the class "has-tip", how can I get the tip to always show up in the previous "form-tip" div? Something like: $('.has-tip').each(focus(function() { var tip = $(this).attr('title'); // Find most recent $('.form-tip') in the DOM and populate it with tip })); I hope that makes sense... • 'is instanceof' Interface bad design

  Say I have a class A class A { Z source; } Now, the context tells me that 'Z' can be an instance of different classes (say, B and C) which doesn't share any common class in their inheritance tree. I guess the naive approach is to make 'Z' an Interface class, and make classes B and C implement it. But something still doesn't convince me because every time an instance of class A is used, I need to know the type of 'source'. So all finishes in multiple 'ifs' making 'is instanceof' which doesn't sound quite nice. Maybe in the future some other class implements Z, and having hardcoded 'ifs' of this type definitely could break something. The escence of the problem is that I cannot resolve the issue by adding functions to Z, because the work done in each instance type of Z is different. I hope someone can give me and advice, maybe about some useful design pattern. Thanks

I'm trying to use PHP and fgetcsv to create arrays for each separate piece of data to use PHP to put it into the html code. • Placing error message for a checkbox array

  Hello all. I am using the Validation Plugin for jQuery and it works wonders. Except when I have a group of checkboxes...the error messages will display right after the first checkbox...like so: <tbody> <c:forEach items="${list}" var="item"> <tr> <td align="center"> <input type="checkbox" name="selectItems" value="<c:out value="${item.numberPlate}"/>" /> </td> <!--some other columns--> </tr> </c:forEach> </tbody> I found that I can use a wrapper for these checkboxes ,then place the error message there, but I have no idea how to do it since I'm creating the rows dynamically. • Seeking free ODBC database optimization tool for non-experts

  I'm a database n00b and am reading as many books as I can. I have been given responsibility for an ODBC tool where the databases were designed by a hardware engineer with some VB experience - which made him a s/w guru in the small firm at that time. Things are running slowly and I suspect that the db could have been designed better. I hope to learn enough to use Explain/Describe, etc maybe add some indices, but, in the meantime, is there any free for commercial use tool which can examine an ODBC database and suggest improvements. I'm just talking about db schema here, but maybe I should also be looking at optimizing Selects with Joins? Is there a tool for that? ODBC compliant.

• In Ruby on Rails Routing I Would Like to Use Dash `-` Instead of Underscore `_`

  I would like all the URLs for my web applications to use dash - instead of underscore _ for word separators. I'm surprised about a couple of things really: Google et al. continue to distinguish them. That RoR doesn't have a simple global configuration parameter to map - to _ in the routing. Or does it? I found a few questions here and elsewhere, but the best solution I've seen is to use :as or a named route. That's quite annoying. So I'm thinking of modifying the Rails routing to check for that global config and change - to _ before dispatching to a controller action. But before I do that, I'm hoping someone can save me the trouble! Thanks in advance for any help, or even confirmation that my approach makes sense. I'd submit it back. BTW, I'm currently on 2.3.8, but hope to migrate to 3 soon.

That looks like CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `MyArray`.`ArrayTable` ( `ID` INT UNSIGNED NOT NULL COMMENT 'Hash value of SessionID + ArrayName' , `SessionID` INT UNSIGNED NOT NULL , `ArrayName` CHAR(26) NOT NULL COMMENT '32 digit char - 6 digit longest process id (assumtion)' , `Index` INT UNSIGNED NOT NULL , `Value` TEXT NOT NULL , PRIMARY KEY (`ID`, `SessionID`) ) ENGINE = MyISAM; The table is not normalized yet, 'hope this will make it a little simpler to understand :) To avoid collission between client, there should be a differentiator between client session. For that reason i think need to know current session/process id (just like "SHOW PROCESSLIST") but really need to know IN WHICH process the query are?
