• I wanted to be a programmer

  Hello, let me ask your opinion. I'm 25 now, living in Germany. I started with QBASIC, did some Java in Highschool, and after School I created some Websites in PHP. Now, because my Company is Microsoft Gold Partner, I've to use Microsoft all the time. C#, MSSQL, ASPX and Sharepoint <- I really hate it! So, in my spare I concentrate to gain more knowledge (C++, Java, Silverlight or WPF), because it feels that I'm so far behind, in comparison for example to you guys, or other older employees in my company. Do think that my behaviour is useful? Should I focus my time to become i.e. a pure C# Programmer? I did C# even before I started to learn some C++. Should I learn what do with pointers, memcpy and stuff like that, even if managed code brings us so much benefits? Or is it a waste of time, better invested in learning the latest technologies? rAyt

• Is it acceptible to expect mentoring to replace many years experience?

  Hi all Just a quick question Here's my situation: I've been maintaining, extending and creating websites against a CMS for the last 18 months In that time I've learnt a LOT more about ASP.Net, javascript, and of course the quirks of the CMS we are using My manager wants to get others involved, and I'm expected to mentor another programmer whilst they work on production code Now, I've got no problem mentoring someone and it would be great for me to not be the only one with the skillset. But what I HAVE got a problem with is mentoring someone within an agreed timescale of the piece of work (10 days in this case) AND expected to deliver the product to the same standard. I guess what I'm getting at is: 18 months experience != a few days mentoring, not to mention the level of C#/.Net/ASP.Net/Javascript required may also not be up to scratch. Am I right to think this is a little, wrong?

• Cannot access a web page? [closed]

  Hello all, Recently, I could not access the webpage bbc.co.uk anymore, while I can access other websites smoothly. Ar first, I though there may be some problem with my laptop. However, if I use my laptop through my company network, I can load the page bbc.co.uk normally. Then, I though maybe my ADSL at home blocks that web address. However, I tried another laptop with my home ADSL and it can load the page bbc.co.uk very fast. Now I do not know what could be the problem. Can anyone tell me please? Thank you.

• Image Gallery with JQuery Lightbox

  Hi there, I've used the JQuery lightbox on a couple of websites, by having a gallery of thumbnails and the thumbnails as links to the bigger photos, such as: <a href="Images/Gallery/1.jpg" class="lightbox"> <img src="Images/Gallery/Thumbnails/1T.jpg" width="136" height="97" /> </a> My question is, using lightbox - can I make it so that I have a thumbnail image that when clicked takes you to a folder with a few pictures to cycle through, rather than just linking to one photo like in the example above? I've tried with one link like above and in the Gallery folder having more than one image, but I don't get any navigation buttons, just the one image that is linked to.

  Is it possible to automatically backup my database to dropbox? If so how can I do it? The key criteria I need it to do is: Be automatic. Be Mac compliant. Be weekly. Sync with dropbox (http://www.dropbox.com) automatically. Be able to backup several databases from several websites. Be free... or relatively cheap! Have a guide on how to setup the solution. • IE8 BHO tab problem

  I am developing an IE8 BHO in C#. One of the functions of the BHO is to maintain a list of website pairs visited by the user. I add the pair (url1, url2) to the list if the user visits url2 by clicking on a link present at url1. I will be using this info to show the ie history in a nice way as opposed to the default behaviour of showing a long list of visited websites (something along the lines of the Firefox addon Voyage ). In my BHO, I am currently using the BeforeNavigate2 event to find the URL the user is going to visit. This works fine as long as the page is opened in the same tab. But, how to find if the user opens the link in a new tab/new window? Is there a way (other than IPC) in which we can find the url from which the user came from? Thanks, simil

• What do you do when every possible business idea is already taken?

  I have a bit of free time and lots of enthusiasm for software and the web. I want to make a start-up, to sell kind of product or online service, but I'm having a hard time coming up with business ideas that haven't already been implemented. For example, I thought of making an e-ordering website for ordering food from restaurants online. Good thing I typed it into Google, because the market is already full of hundreds of websites doing the same thing and competing heavily. The same thing has happened with so many other business ideas I've become excited and passionate about - they're all taken. What's your response to this? Do you agree that all the good ideas seem to be taken? Or do you think there is room for new businesses, and that I'm just not thinking (or looking) hard enough? Have you ever tried idea after idea, only to find that it was already being done, and you had to move onto something else?

• Wordpress + VMware CSS path problem

  I posted a similar question earlier today but this question is clearer. I want to locally develop my Wordpress websites (on my Mac) and test them in Internet Explorer (6,7,8) on Windows XP. I can get the MAMP welcome screen to show in Windows XP, so I know VMWare is doing it's thing. The local URL for my site (on my Mac) is: URL (http://d3creative:8888/) But the local URL under VMware/Internet Explorer is: URL (http://192.168.2.1:8888/d3creative/) This is the only way I can get it to show up, problem is all the CSS styles are referencing the local Mac URL (http://d3creative:8888/) So understandably the CSS isn't showing up. Is there a way to tell Windows that "http://192.168.2.1:8888/d3creative/" should equal "http://d3creative:8888/" I've tried editing the "hosts" file within in Windows XP and I've rebooted after making any changes, but nothing is working. My software: MAMP Pro (v1.8.2) Wordpress (v2.8.6) Windows XP (SP3) Internet Explorer (6, 7, 8) Any help would be much appreciated. Stephen Meehan

• IIS 7.5 powershell module usage issues

  Has anyone managed to use this module with success, i'm running 32bit Windows 7, where i have opened an administrator shell using run as administrator, i have imported the WebAdministration module and then attempted to use the commands with some issues, have provided two examples here Websites I created a web site with the following command new-website -name testsite -port 80 -hostheader testsite -physicalpath c:\temp Then i attempted to get the sites details using the command get-website -name testsite but it always returns all sites, seems to ignore the -name parameter. Only way i can get the site is using a filter get-website | ? { $_.name -eq 'testsite' } | get-member When i use appcmd it works as expected using the following command C:\> C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\appcmd.exe list site testsite AppPools When i try to list the apppools using the following command dir iis:\apppools i get the following error Get-ChildItem : Access is denied. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED)) Yet when i use appcmd as follows i get all the apppools as expected without any error C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\appcmd.exe list apppool Has anyone successfully managed to use the WebAdministration module ? • HTML Chrome Audit Specify Image Dimensions

  I just started using the chrome developer tools for some basic html websites and I used the audit tool. I had two identical images, one with the height and width attribute, and one without. On the Resources section, both the latency and the download time were identical. However, the Audit showed Specify image dimensions (1) A width and height should be specified for all images in order to speed up page display. Does this actually help? And are there any other ways to speed up page time? This is only a splash page for the website I am building and as such it is only html, no css or javascript or anything. I have already compressed the images but I want to speed up load time even more. Is there a way?

  Hello Friends, I have asp.net website name http://www.go4sharepoint.com I have tried almost all ways to improve performance of this site, I have even check firebug and page speed addon on Firefox, but somehow i am not pleased with the result. I also tried like removing whitespace, remove viewstate, optimizing code which renders it, applied GZip, I have also no heavy session variables used, but still when i compare with other popular websites it is not upto the mark. I have check CodeProject website and was surprise that even though they have lot of stuff displayed there website is loading fast and they also have good loading rate. • Good Perlin noise resources/implementation?

  Are there any good resources out there detailing Perlin noise generation? I understand that most languages have noise generating libraries available, but I'm interested in creating my own for fun/experience. I've already looked at this, which seems pretty popular, but it only gives an in-depth explanation of one dimensional noise. Google searches have been relatively unhelpful so far, as most of them focus on applications instead of how to create a generator. Books and/or websites are welcome, even if their focus is not the generation itself so long as it gives a thorough explanation of an implementation, or at least the concepts involved so I can "discover" my own.

  I will be displaying news feeds from external websites on my website. So i need to open external links in those feeds in a new window, but give the user an option to return to my website. Basically I'm trying to replicate Google Images' technique of opening a link in a window with 2 frames - with the top frame having an option to "Remove Frame" and the bottom frame displaying the content of the link. Also, since the news feed will be dynamic, I don't want to hard-code anything. The code should be used automatically by any link appearing in the news feeds. Any ideas on how to do it?

  Hello. Unfortunately, (written) midterms are necessary in most university CS programs in the world. They tell us how well our students (and ourselves as teachers) are doing. Needless to say, designing midterms for a C Programming Language course is not easy. For instance, when we do program for real, we have a myriad of information at our disposal: websites, books, cheat sheets to "remember" the syntax and so on. My question is this: did you find any way, during your years at school or training, where you said: ok, this midterm evaluation of my programming skills is tough, but fair. For instance: I found "find 5 problems with this code"-type questions hard but interesting and telling. Are there any others? Thanks.

• Does a .NET 4.0 website load faster for a reason?

  I have been using DotNetBlogEngine for many years, and today my host (JodoHost.com) officially turned on support for .NET 4.0. What I've noticed immediately is that the website loads tremendously faster on the first load, subsequent loads are only slightly faster. The website is compiled as a .NET 2.0 web application. Is there a known reason for this performance increase? Was there a change in the .NET 4.0 framework that improved the initial load time of websites into an application pool?   I'm considering switching to mysqli for all my php projects. The way my code is written (I run very simple websites and built my own basic framework which I use across all of them) I shouldn't have too many problems modifying the functions and classes. However, i've only heard positive things about prepared statements, bar a few grumblings about the php functions available, most notably the lack of a simple replacement for using mysql_fetch_array in a while. This sounds a bit too good to be true, so I wondered if anyone could highlight some of the issues with using prepared statements, such as speed and resource usage.

I have a couple of questions that I couldn't find obvious answers to. Does MSDeploy have robust support for upgrading websites after the initial deployment? I can see MSDeploy has good support for the initial deployment of databases. But does it have support for upgrading schemas whilst preserving the current data?   Hi, I work for a company which produces flash websites. The CMS is built in PHP. The client can update the text on the CMS site. Currently it uses a really old, bad, flash text-editor. It needs to be upgraded to something much much better. I need a text editor that will produce 'flash-html' as well as 'valid-html'. Or even something that marks up the text in the way that would allow me to do this. I tried using TinyMCE and ran into problems trying to convert the HTML. Has anyone tried doing this? Can anyone recommend anything or give any tips on how I can do this?

• CodeIgniter's XSS Protection is removing <script> tags from user inputs... but I don't want it to!

  Hey folks, CodeIgniter is brilliant but I'm using it to develop a site where users need to be able to share their code for websites. Unfortunately, CodeIgniter has been doing the "right" thing by removing <script> tags from my user's inputs into the database, so when it's returned data looks like this: [removed] User's data [removed] However, I need my site to DISPLAY script tags but obviously not PARSE them. How can I get CodeIgniter or PHP to return <script> tags, but still sanitise them for the database and return them without them executing? Thanks! • How to find a programmer for my project?

  I'm building a web application to generate monthly subscription fees, but I've quickly realised I'm going to need some help with the project to finish it this century. I don't have any money upfront for a freelancer and every website I've found takes bids for project work. The tasks that need doing are flexible too because I can do whatever the other coder doesn't want to.   am currently reading a book, which has explanation of making a social website. half way through i noticed that the images of the solution explorer given in the text, indicate that windowsformapplication[PROJECT] has been used instead of WebForms[create new website]! there are no webforms? how would the end result be a site? what is happening here?? note:- i have always made websites which needs hosting and be accessible from other computers using webforms[create new website] which has web.config file app_data etc..... please help thank you.
