• How to choose the right web application framework?

Since we are starting out without funding, price/performance and cost of licences/hardware is important. We definitely want to bring AJAX well present in the web interface. But apart from these, there's no further criteria I can come up with. I'm most experienced with C#/ASP.net, PHP and Java, in that order, but don't turn down other languages (Ruby, Python, Scala, etc.). How can we determine from the jungle of frameworks the one that suits best our goal? What other questions should we be asking ourselves? Reference material: articles, book recommendations, websites, etc.?

• IIS7 - Specifying content-length header in ASP causes "connection reset" error

  I'm migrating a series of websites from an existing IIS5 server to a brand new IIS7 web server. One of the pages pulls a data file from a blob in the database and serves it to the end user: Response.ContentType = rs("contentType") Response.AddHeader "Content-Disposition", "attachment;filename=" & Trim(rs("docName"))&rs("suffix")' let the browser know the file name Response.AddHeader "Content-Length", cstr(rs("docsize"))' let the browser know the file size Testing this in the new IIS7 install, I get a "Connection Reset" error in both Internet Explorer and Firefox. The document is served up correctly if the Content-Length header is removed (but then the user won't get a useful progress bar). Any ideas on how to correct this; whether it be a server configuration option or via code? Thanks.

• Dns caching for sockets

  I'm connecting to some websites through socks proxy server. In my case its very good to implement dns cache, so proxy don't need to resolve website's ip address. So, I performed DNS lookup, but don't know where to supply IP address. mySocket.Connect uses proxy's ip address so it isn't right place. I tried to place it in http header GET http://11.22.33.44/index.html HTTP/1.1 - this doesn't work (even in browser) since website is on virtual hosting. It seems that Host header is right place for resolved ip address. Am I right? Will proxy resolve host name (since it's still there in GET header) or not?

• JavaScript distributed computing project

  I made a website that does absolutely nothing, and I've proven to myself that people like to stay there - I've already logged 11+ hours worth of cumulative time on the page. My question is whether it would be possible (or practical) to use the website as a distributed computing site. My first impulse was to find out if there were any JavaScript distributed computing projects already active, so that I could put a piece of code on the page and be done. Unfortunately, all I could find was a big list of websites that thought it might be a cool idea. I'm thinking that I might want to start with something like integer factorization - in this case, RSA numbers. It would be easy for the server to check if an answer was correct (simply test for modulus equals zero), and also easy to implement. Is my idea feasible? Is there already a project out there that I can use?

There are some specialized websites, like those below, but how can you tell Google you mean "R" the language? If I'm searching for something specific, I'll use an R-specific term, like "cbind." • VB.NET ASP.NET Web Application woes (VS 2008)

  Hi all, I am making my first web application with ASP.NET and I am having a rough time. I have previously created the application I am working on as a Windows Form application and it works great, but I am having problems with the HTML side of things in the web application. My issues are pretty minor, but very annoying. I have worked with websites before and CSS, but as far as I can tell I do not have direct access to a CSS when creating a web application in VS 2008. My biggest issue is the positioning of components that I have dragged onto the "Default.aspx" form. For instance, how am I supposed to float a panel next to another one if I don't have a CSS, or how am I to correctly position a label?

I inherited the graph structure from the previous programmer and had to leave it alone while I worked on other parts of the site. It's time to make the graphs more meaningful, so I'm looking for books/websites/etc about graphs. (Not graph theory!) Charts that convey comparisons at a glance. Everyone suggests The Visual Display of Quantitative Information by Edward Tufte and that's spot on for what I'm looking for, so anything related to that would be great.   I have seen a disturbing trend where websites are starting to require verification sent to cellphones by text message (SMS). Gmail and Facebook are two of them. What I want to know are the following: Is it a good idea to start requiring cellphones instead of emails now? How do I do it on my own website? Edit Here are some of my new questions on the topic in response to the answers: I see that most of you are saying that SMS registrations is ok. But what about the people who don't have cell phones? And why is it accepted to give out your cell phone information freely? Do those big providers really pay per message to a gateway service? Is it not possible to set up a server with the correct SMS software, or at least buy a subscription directly instead of having a middleman?

• SVN Best practice for a "branch" of your main product ?

  At my job we develop websites - however now we're going to make a "whitelabelled" version of a site, which basically means it's the same site, however with a different logo and hosted on a different domain. Also it'll have minor graphical differences, but overall the engine is the same. My initial thought for keeping this in SVN, was to just make a branch for it - however I'm not quite certain if this could give me trouble later on. Normally I keep my branches somewhat short lived - mainly used for developing a new feature, without disturbing trunk. We need to be able to merge trunk changes into this "whitelabel" version, which I why I thought about branching it in the first place. So what's the best way to archive this ?

• FTP client to zip before upload and unzip on the server after upload

  I am always working with some big websites that is annoying to upload given the number of small files. I use Filezilla but am happy to buy some commercial solution if there is one out there that can zip the files before upload and then unzip it after upload. Its a pain to have to manually do that all the time. If someone know of any ftp client or extension for Filezilla or other that would do that... I sent an email to the support for CuteFTP and WSFtp - no answer so far... I know FTP protocol does not allow this command - thats why Im asking for a extension (if anyone know) or a free or commercial FTP client that do the job...

• How can I build against Microsoft.Web.Administration (IIS 7.x) on a Windows 2003 build machine?

  Hi, I am writing a C# config app for (amongst other things) setting up websites. It's only required to support IIS 7.x (Windows 2008 / 2008 R2), and requiring the compatibility pack is a no-no, so I figured I'd just use the Microsoft.Web.Administration namespace. However, the only place I can find the assembly that contains this namespace (Microsoft.Web.Administration.dll) is from the IIS 7.x installation folder, and our main build machines are Windows 2003 and so cannot install IIS 7.x. One option is to mandate a 2008 build machine but we currently only have one so that's not ideal. We've already ruled out appcmd.exe. The other option is to make a package consisting of the dlls necessary to build against Microsoft.Web.Administration.dll. Has anyone tried that? Is there such a package already in existence, hidden somewhere on the MS download site? Thanks in advance.

• How do I host a Google gadget? How does it work?

  I just spent 5 hours by checking Google gadgets websites and FAQs, but I still have no idea how to host a gadget. What I've figured from reading the Google documentation: I can write gadgets with XML, JavaScript etc.. Gadgets can be added to iGoogle etc.. Google can host the gadgets for you. Gadgets can be hosted anywhere else??? All of the above information doesn't answer my question. For instance, with jQuery or Dojo Toolkit, I can download the JavaScript framework and use it. With Google gadgets, I can not find a download link for a framework. Why? Does Google provide its framework? If not, why does the documentation indicate that gadgets can be hosted anywhere?   I've searched Google, but only found information on how to setup a feedburner for wordpress or other blogging services. I've also searched stackoverflow, but not found the right information. I'm creating a website, for which I want to have an RSS. Feedburner seems to be a good, free option - so I'd like to use that. When I go to feedburner, using my google account, it says the website I want to claim is invalid. And it's not clear how to make it valid.   i have an uploads folder on my website. What i want to do is restrict users from accessing like i dont want them to go to www.mysite.com/uploads/ and see the files in there and it should show forbidden, but they should be able to download via my website, for example www.mysite.com/downloads.php?id=1 If thats not possible, how can i atleast not show them the directory index on /uploads How is it that file sharing websites does this? Development: Any new modules/enhancements will be done in this environment Staging: Mirror of production Production: The public facing website. Currently when there's an update to the website, this is what we do do the update in development copy file to staging copy file to production In production we take a backup of the old file by renaming it. I would like to make it simpler by installing SVN and stop the file renaming thing. But im not sure how many repositories to have per website. should be it be three or two? I'm absolutely new to svn. Some of these are websites like websnapshots, windows libraries such as PHP's imagegrabscreen (only works on windows), and KDE's wkhtml. Many more do exist. However, I'm looking for a GUI-less solution. Something I can create an API around and link it to php or python. I'm comfortable with python, php, C, and shell. This is a personal project, so I'm not interested in commercial applications as I'm aware of their existence. Any ideas?

• Must .aspx files have a page directive?

  Around 90% of the pages for our websites have no .Net code embedded in them yet are published as .aspx files. I want these to render as fast as possible so I'm removing as much as I can. Does the .Net page directive have an impact on performance? I am thinking about two factors; the page speed for each GET and what happens when the file changes. The CMS system re-creates each page daily and I'm wondering if this triggers the ASP.Net compilation process.

• Preventing spam bots on site?

  We're having an issue on one of our fairly large websites with spam bots. It appears the bots are creating user accounts and then posting journal entries which lead to various spam links. It appears they are bypassing our captcha somehow -- either it's been cracked or they're using another method to create accounts. We're looking to do email activation for the accounts, but we're about a week away from implementing such changes (due to busy schedules). However, I don't feel like this will be enough if they're using an SQL exploit somewhere on the site and doing the whole cross site scripting thing. So my question to you: If they are using some kind of XSS exploit, how can I find it? I'm securing statements where I can but, again, its a fairly large site and it'd take me awhile to actively clean up SQL statements to prevent XSS. Can you recommend anything to help our situation?

  I built a TicTacToe game application (I'm using TCP protocol) that consist of server and client (that run two times to represent the 2 opponents). I have a problem and I can't find the solution for it, that is why I'm asking this question. the problem is : when the client try to connect the server on my machine, it never connect because of the IP address(obtained from the support tab from the local area connection in my windows) of my machine isn't correct. I tried to obtain my IP address from websites that told you your IP but I doesn't work. I have a problem to determine my IP address that any machine can connect to me from anywhere. p.s. • Can't change header logo in Magento?

  Hello, I have created my own theme for magento, and I am trying to edit the logo and am having difficulty. I have created my own local/Mage/Page/etc/config.xml file, and specified within the config the following: <logo_src>images/Race-Ramps-logo-streaked-gradient.gif</logo_src> I created a custom layout in the file as well. I can see the custom layout file in the CMS, but my changes to the logo do absolutely nothing. I have even tried changing the original core config.xml, it still stays the same. On multiple websites, I have been told to go to System Configuration Design Header, but I do not have the header option? Help please!

  Hi Guys, I need to build a scalable single sign-on mechanism for multiple sites. Scenario: Central web application to register/manage account (Server in Europe) Several web applications that need to authenticate against my user database (Servers in US/Europe/Pacific region) I am using MySQL as database backend. The options I came up with are either replicating the user database across all servers (data security?) or allowing the servers to directly connect to my MySQL instance by explicitly allowing connections from their IPs in my.cnf (high load? single point of failure?). What would be the best way to provide a scalable and low-latency single sign-on for all web applications? In terms of data security would it be a good idea to replicate the user database across all web applications? Note: All web applications provide an API which users can use to embed widgets into their own websites. These widgets work through a token auth mechanism which will again need to authenticate against my user database.
