• Installing Vista on a BSOD Windows 7 (ASAP)

  On a previous question i posted, i asked for help on fixing my windows vista box because it keeps going to blue screen. No one seems to have the answer, so now i want to install Windows 7. I want to know if i can install 7 without having to reformat my hard drive and having to lose all my files. I've already confirmed the hardware is working because i installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my external hard drive and it runs on my system fine. • Photo Management Software for OS X That Supports Multiple Library Locations

  I'm looking at the possibility of changing our photo management software. Thinking about Aperture or Lightroom. And want to know if either supports: Having folders/libraries on separate harddrives/Volumes. Tolerates having network folders occasionally connected Snappy interface A solid enough piece of software as not to crash or behave weirdly. [ so the wife doesn't get stuck and have to call me ;) ] Background The wife is photographer and I'm the computer programmer. Our current setup is Picasa, with a "Recent/Working" folder on the local iMac harddrive, and "Archive" folders on NFS mounted Linux Server, Raid 5, for redundant and extra storage capacity. (the Linux server also syncs with Amazon's EC2) Picasa is doing OK, but I get annoyed when it doesn't do behave properly. Usually around issues when the Linux disk isn't mounted. And overall, I wish Picasa seemed a little more polished and snappier. Thanks, Lance

  I recently installed a piece of software that my group needs for a research project starting next September. Turns out the software has a known crash bug when used with glibc 2.12.1. My boss asked if we can upgrade glibc on the server that's supposed to run it. Cue my skeptical silence.... At some point, I got it into my brain that messing with glibc was about as good an idea as messing with a hungry puma; however, I've been unable to determine the source of this belief. So, if I go ahead with this: Am I doing something flagrantly stupid (e.g. I won't fix my problem, I will brick my server, or I will initiate a zombie apocalypse)? What can go wrong? What is likely to go wrong? How do I avoid the answers to 2 and 3?

• Windows server 2008 r2 console stuck at "waiting for user profile service"

  Hi, I have a windows 2008 R2 server, running on dell poweredge t300. Using hyper-v to run a windows 2008 R2 server also. Suddenly, today, my virtual console (on the virtual copy of windows 2008 server r2) will not let me login as administrator. It starts to login but then sticks at the message: Please wait for the User profile Service and is unresponsive to keypresses (incl ctrl-alt-del). The only way out is a crash. It starts up in safe mode without networking ok but not in safe mode with networking. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be appreciated Thanks

• Understanding List formatting in MSWord

  I've never understood how formatting works in MSWord for lists... it mostly just works but sometimes becomes incredibly stubborn about enforcing styles you don't want, especially when copy-pasting into a list and working with multiple, multi-layer lists. What are some good ways to understand how it works, so one can work with Word, instead of fighting against it? Here's an example... I want a list like: 1)first test CHECK: a)something b)another thing 2)another test CHECK: a)it works b)it doesn't crash I find Word really doesn't like this... I try creating one mini-list and copy pasting but typically the numbering on the sub-lists doesn't re-start automatically, etc. I'm using Word 2007 but I remember it being this way in earlier versions too.

• RAID0 PROBLEM WITH A SONY SPORTING A NEW HDD

  Sony Windows 7 PC. Originally had 2 x 300Gb HDD. One HDD completely pancaked so have replaced with a new 500Gb HDD. When both drives are connected the 300GB doesn't appear to be recognised as a 300Gb HDD as a seperate entity. BIOS sees it but the operating system only sees a total of 465GB of HD space. When both disks are attached unde disk management it shows one 465Gb as RAID 0 and the new drive as STxxxxxx 465Gb. My question I guess is what should I see in total HDD space and is this configured correctly as I thought I would see 2 seperate drives 1x500Gb and 1x300Gb. My customer insisted that prior to the HDD crash he saw 2 drives both registering as 300Gb (a c: and d: drive).

• Wrong Sound Blaster's PCI ID within Windows

  I own Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium, it was working with no problems under Linux or Windows 7. It's original PCI ID is 1102:000b but now I see different within MS Windows. BIOS setup: 1102:000b GNU/Linux: 1102:000b Windows 7: 1102:000d Windows 8: 1102:000d In last days I'm experimenting with IOMMU PCI passthrough in Xen and I tried to pass this device to virtual Windows 7 and 8. Here I found this problem. I don't know if this is just coincidence or reason of my problem but it's wrong even in physical system. Windows detects 1102:000d as a High Definition Audio sound device (I guess this name, I have localized Windows, but this is general name, the same was with Realtek HDA before drivers), it's playing but it's unstable (Windows speaker testing can crash that application) and I can't install Creative software. Used driver is hdaudio.sys. Booting in BIOS or UEFI mode doesn't change anything. Nor CMOS clean. Someone met the same problem.

• HP CM2320 Printer crashes windows 2003 spooler in TS/Citrix

  Hello, I'm having a very annoying issue with an HP printer (CM2320): all of a sudden, any user who has that printer installed locally as default printer would crash any Windows 2003 terminal services or Citrix server (XenApp PS 4.5) as soon as he connect, causing the session to hang and other users to be unable to connect to the server. To restore functionality, an administrator has to connect to the server's console session and acknowledge the error message about spoolsv.exe having crashed with an AV. I tried downloading the latest drivers from HP (an adventure worthy of Lara Croft in itself) and install it on all servers but that didn't seem to have helped the situation: the spooler is still crashing. Anyone has a suggestion about what I could do about this ?

• Windows 7 Locking up Randomly

  I've got a Windows 7 machine that is locking up randomly. It can be in the first thirty seconds, or it can be hours later. There is nothing specific I can find that is running when it happens. When it locks, the screen doesn't change, but nothing moves. The waiting icon stops, the mouse stops, keyboard doesn't work, etc. I've even tried the crash on ctrl-scrl registry hack, and it won't even dump the kernel. I've run hardware diagnostics on the RAM and it doesn't find any problems. I would think it is a hardware issue, but on this exact same machine, I can run 64 Bit Ubuntu and it has zero problems. I've even tried reinstalling Windows7 from scratch, and it still happens. Anyone have any ideas? Any good diagnostic tools to recommend? Thanks! Michael

• Yum Update fails due to conflicting perl packages

  Hi I have a CentOS 5.2 i386 Production box with Qmail, LAMP etc now since it showed me that it could upgrade to 5.3, i downloaded all the packages using yum update However, the update fails due to perl packages conflicting I believe that while installing Qmail, I had tried for Mailscanner and thus it upgraded the per itself I read somewhere that we can uninstall the conflicting rpms and then go for the upgrade But, I am about 50 % sure that if I go ahead and uninstall perl, my server will crash like a falling house of cards Also, perl is needed by variety of packages working including vpopmail etc Thus, I request anyone to please tell me if we have a safer solution to this IF there is no solution to this, then can somebody please teach me how to backup and restore Qmail as it is. • diagnose "corrupt file" problems

  My computer has been crashing the last couple weeks pretty regularly (at least once a day). A lot of times things I do will display a little notification in the bottom right saying something about a corrupt file. (I'm on Windows XP Pro Service Pack 3). When the computer does crash I get the "blue screen of death" usually. Some of the notifications also advise running the chkdsk utility. I cannot get it to successfully run. Using the command prompt (or even the "tools" menu after right clicking the drive and choosing properties), it will not run the utility (it says "do you want to schedule it to run next boot time" or whatever, which I confirm). The problem is that most of the time after restarting, it doesn't run at all. The few times it does run, it has an error (I can't remember the error right now, it at least says it's ntfs and such) and says disk checking will end. How can I get it to successfully run?

  Yahoo Mail is sending our server's transactional emails to the Spam folder, even though we have taken quite a few anti-spam steps. By contrast, Gmail allows the messages through to the inbox just fine. Here are the things which are in place: SPF is set up for the domain holsteinplaza.com. Yahoo reports spf=pass in the message headers. DKIM is set up for the domain holsteinplaza.com. Yahoo reports dkim=pass in the message headers. We have a proper reverse DNS entry for the sending mail server. Name - IP matches IP - Name. Neither Domainkeys nor SenderID are set up. From what I can tell, DKIM is the way of the future, and there is not much to be gained from adding Domainkeys or SenderID. Following are the headers. • Where to go to see an exception thrown by a browser based java app

I would like to find the exception that is being thrown (if possible) so I can show it to the support of the company that makes the app. Is there a standard place for this? Or a way that capture it? (So I can prove that it is happening.) I am using Firefox, but could use IE if needed.

• How can I fix my WRT54GL's constant crashing?

  I have a Linksys WRT54GL wireless router (the old blue-and-black) whose underside indicates it is Version 2. I've noticed that, on wireless mode, if I am on a Skype call or in a Google Hangout, the wireless aspect will crash completely. In addition, if I am connected via an ethernet cord, my quality (that is, how my voice is received) tanks very quickly. I suspect this is due, in part, to my internet connectivity itself (I'm on Comcast instead of Verizon FiOS, as I'd prefer) but I'd like to stop my wireless router's wireless capability from crashing. I considered a firmware upgrade, but it looks to me as if I am upgraded. Short of manually running ethernet all over my house, I'm not sure what to do. How can I solve my wireless router's issues? If the answer is "buy a new router," then that's valid, as well, in my opinion.

• Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit running Cobian Backup 11 (Gravity)

  I'm really enjoying Cobian 11, but am fairly new to it. My question is this. I back up a pretty large folder on a regular basis. I started off by doing a Full backup, and have followed that monthly using differential backups. I was told that, to restore my computer after a crash, I need to copy back the original full backup AND copy back the latest differential over the full. That's fine. However, over the months there are quite a few large differential backups dated between the original Full one and the latest differential one. To free space on my backup HD, can I every now and then delete the differential backups that lie between the original Full and the latest differential, and just leave the original Full and the latest differential backup on the HD?

  I installed Debian with kernel 2.6.32-5-686 on a Hyper-V virtual machine. I had to add a legacy network card. Is there any other way to load hyper-v drivers? I really need to change that legacy network card because my debian machine is going to be used as proxy. Thank you.

  We're using OpsView/Nagios to monitor our servers. We've added the SNMP service to all our servers and deployed the configuration via GPO, but one win2k3 server seems to have a problem; it crashes pretty regularly. The event log carries messages like: Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7034 Date: 6/11/2009 Time: 7:11:49 PM User: N/A Computer: HOSTNNAME Description: The SNMP Service service terminated unexpectedly.   Hello, I'm currently managing a site that I feel could be optimized and utilized to be much faster, however, I'm having difficulty finding reliable information to do it. I find the Apache documentation to be a hard read, and too technical about things I don't have a strong grasp on. I'm just looking for a good beginner/intermediate book about server administration to learn as much as possible about Apache, as well as how to create a nice secure, robust server that doesn't crash at the first hint of unusual traffic surges. • Computer froze up

  Why would my computer freeze up out of the blue? I have Apache Webserver w/php, and MySQL server installed. I am not sure exactly when it happened, but I was doing something on a wordpress site that I have installed, and it just waited and waited and waited. Then, all the folders on it that were open on my other computer closed, as though I had disconnected it. Then the skype account went offline. The computer was totally froze. I thought maybe it was someone on logmein, but disconnecting it from the network didn't do anything. I had to "crash" it (held in the power button till it shutdown). It started up normally then and the logs showed absolutely nothing wrong. And doing the same thing that I did when it froze didn't repeat the freeze. Any ideas, I never had this happen before.

• System Monitoring Redundancy

  I consult in a small business environment where I have two HyperV hosts (with <10 VMs) + a couple other servers. I recently had an issue where one of the HyperV hosts had a CPU issue and it came down, bringing most of my non-critical VMs with it, plus a free piece of software that I use for network & system monitoring and availability. Because of this, and the fact that iDRAC locked up to, I did not get any alerts about the crash. So I am wondering how I can (cheaply) get a redundant availability monitoring system in place--Is is as simple as running Nagios or Zenoss (or whatever) on two different HyperV hosts? It just seems like running more than one copy of Nagios/Zenoss/etc could be expensive and have high overhead. Thoughts? Thanks! -Josh

• Emacs doesn't load gui.

  Hi, whenever I run emacs or emacs23 on terminal I just get the following output: ** (emacs:2620): CRITICAL **: menu_proxy_module_load: assertion `dbusproxy != NULL' failed And the gui doesn't load, and emacs' window never opens. The emacs process doesn't actually crash (the terminal stays busy, and I can see the emacs23 process running with ps -e). I've tried running it with the -D --debug-init arguments, but the same thing happens and the output is exactly the same. However, if I run emacs -nw it successfully runs emacs in terminal mode as if nothing were wrong. Strangely, this problem only started happening the second time I ran emacs today. The first time it worked perfectly fine. Since then, I've tried rebooting and I've tried purging the emacs installation, to no success. I haven't installed any new packages today, but I might have upgraded some, could that be the reason? Is there a way to find out which packages were installed/upgraded today? • Java application crashes on startup in citrix session

  Hello We have a java application published through citrix. When application is launched for a new user, it crashes immediately on startup. If we login using RDP, then log out (not starting the app), it starts to work. We've published another smaller java app, and it works for new users, without the need to first log on using RDP. Steps: - Publish java app - create new user - run published app in citrix -> crash - log on user using rdp, log out - run published app in citrix -> works fine Its becoming real tiresom to log on each new user to each citrix server :-P

  For slightly complicated reasons we tend to give people console access to VMs via the webui. This has worked fine in the past, however when the users update their client machines to Windows 7 (or Vista, I am told, although I have not tested that), then the console fails to work. On IE8, having allowed the ActiveX control, the tab causes a "Internet Explorer has stopped working" dialog. On Firefox 3.5 , once the plugin has been installed, using the console causes the browser to crash. I've updated to the most recent VC 2.5 release, and ESX 3.5u5. Anyone else seeing this? Any clues how to get round it (other than using the fat client). Nigel.

• Extending C drive not possible

  This is my computer partition list. You can see my C drive is running very low on disk space. I wanted to extend my disk space, so I used mmc Disk managment to shrink a volume, but I can't extend it to the C drive because the extended volume in dropdown list of C is not clickable. I've tried many packages, but none were able to do it. My C drive is simple, basic, NTFS, healthy (boot, crash dump, primary partition). The MMC Windows: What should I do?
