• IS it ok to use REST for CRUD operations?

  Recently I moved to Laravel and I was surprised on how good setting the controllers as RESTful is, it made routes and my code cleaner. I'm kinda new on web development and never used REST before since all my clients' projects are basically CRUD operations. Are there any cool buzzword to this "approach" or I'm just stupid for doing it? I don't plan to follow any REST patterns, just to make my life easier and code cleaner. Basically just GET/POST, the other ones are not native anyway so (emulated on hidden form value).

• Game Development In C Only. Is it possible?

  I am a first year college student in India and want to make a small game as a this semester project. I am quite good at C and am learning it rapidly but I wanted to ask if developing a game entirely in C(no C++ or C#m I'd love to use these but for college projects, we have strict requirements of using only C). What I am looking for is a simple top view driving game. It won't have anything fancy and even the visual things will be powered by simple characters. For example, user controlled car can be represented by ¦ and edges of road by series of |'s. What do you think?

• Trying not to get ahead of myself but it is hard!

  Well I made a 5 year plan for myself (11years-16years) I am pretty good at Java, HTML, and PHP. I have already done some end projects: Small Java Platform Game A Small Polynomial Solver A Small Image Sharing Site A Chess Website: chesslounge.net I am currently doing some Android Development and so far I have made a program that Vibrates, Blinks the Light, or Creates a custom status message based on the user input. And a program that rotates a pyramid with a texture. My question is: Should I stick to what I am doing or Learn something a little new? I am itching to do C++, but what is your advice?

• coding after a couple beers

  Sometimes after work I'll come home and have a beer or two and I've found that once I have a beer in me, my desire to code drops precipitously. I'm not talking about getting hammered or anything, but I can't seem to get up the gumption to do any coding. I'm still fine to do other things, i.e.- paying bills, playing games, reading, etc, it's just coding. I know that some people prefer to code with some beer in them. Is this normal, or do I need to practice coding under the influence so if the need ever arises, I'm ready for it. (I will only be coding on pet projects, nothing serious while CUI)

• TFS 2008 to TFS 2010 moves and some issues

  There have been many things going on this year around TFS.  Most of them had to do with migrations (I don’t call them upgrades for the most part since it involved new hardware and such).  Many were implementations using the Conchango SfTS template (now EMC). But there were others that were CMMI or Agile 4.0. Everything would move just fine, no issues.  That was until you attempted to run Test Case Management or run the last configuration steps for Lab Management. There is an error that states a project is not ready to run or integrate with Test or Lab Management.  And while there was some documentation on how to adjust and update the Agile WITs to work with it, there was still some disconnect to making it work with CMMI. • Java web UI framework like ASP.NET MVC?

  I'm doing some web apps for personal projects that might be shared out with my friends. I'm trying to use skills that will help me at work, but don't have $$ to spend on Visual Studio right now and don't want to try to cobble something together with Express Editions. Since I've been sort of wanting to bring my Java skills up to date and the main skills I want to work on are design and architecture skills, this isn't a big deal - except that I have no idea how to track down the right UI framework. I know I want something based on MVC, to get more practice with frameworks for that design pattern (we're using ASP .NET MVC2 at work). The UIs that I'll be making will be pretty simple - data entry, buttons, text, images. They will need AJAX. Any thoughts about which frameworks to look at? I'll be watching the comments, if anyone wants additional clarification on what I'm looking for.

• Is there a way to prevent others to steal your open source project and use it to make a profit?

  This might seems like a silly question to ask, but I can't really figure out the answer. The title pretty much says it all. Let's say you have an open source music player, along comes someone, copies it, adds features, modifies the interface, etc and sells it. Nobody would find out. So how does it work? Related: I'm working in some projects myself to make me more employable, so employers can take a look at my code but with some of them I don't feel like uploading them to an online repository, ie sourceforge, and make them visible for the general public.

• Two Weeks As A Software Estimation Rule of Thumb?

  I saw a blog posting that spoke to me: http://james-iry.blogspot.com/2010/10/how-to-estimate-software.html Oddly, this is the kind of estimate that I tend to do on smaller projects. Just about everything is "two weeks" as that is comfortably far enough out. I once had an instructor walk us through how to create a more detailed estimate, wherein we already had the requirements up front, etc. and even after all the careful tabulation and such the final instruction was "Now that you have all this documentation go ahead and double it." Agile practitioners seem to like two weeks also as a sprint length. Is there something magical about two weeks? Is it a hrair number for our psyches or some other kind of crutch? Do you have an immediate default fall-back schedule strategy when you are pressed for an initial delivery date?

  As a manager, I can't always end up generating work that'd be cutting edge. Some of the projects do run on maintenance mode, and generate a healthy free cash flow for the company. As a developer what would it take for you to stick around in this project? I have been thinking of re-branding the work, but I could do with a lot of help here. Appreciate a single response per post. However, they are offering the same salary as my current salary. When I joined my current company a year ago, they declined to pay my asking salary.   What do you do when you don't have any good code samples available when asked by a prospective employer? I like to consider myself a fairly capable developer but I can't share any of the software I've been writing for my company the last few years. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find the time to put much work in my personal projects either.   So now it's 2011, and as I carry on coding on our active projects it's time to update some copyright notices. eg. Copyright Widgets Ltd 2010 to Copyright Widgets Ltd 2010, 2011 My question is when do you update the copyright notices? Do you change the notice in the head of a file the first time you work on that file? Since a module is one piece of code consisting of many files that work together, do you update all notices in that module when you change a single file in that module? Since a program is one piece of code (maybe consisting of many modules), do you update all notices in that program when you change a single file in that program? Or do you just go through and change en-mass over your morning coffee on the grounds your about to start programming and updateing things?

• Fork dead SVN based project on GitHub

  I previously asked this at stack overflow but it was closed, I believe because 'programmers' is a more appropriate venue for this question. I have done some work on the SVN Importer project (Apache license), which appears to be effectively dead (no published changes in 5 years). I have a login to their svn server but do not have commit rights. At any rate, I'd like to convert this project to Git and push my own changes to GitHub. The GitHub site suggests the svn2git tool for converting svn projects to Git, so I was planning to convert the SVN repository to Git, add my changes, and then push this Git repository to GitHub. I'm wondering, what are the legal requirements and common conventions of this process? Is it acceptable to clone the entire history of the project and move it to GitHub? Also, even though this is essentially a dead project, once I've translated the repository to Git should I put all of my commits onto a non master branch or is it acceptable to use master in this case?

  I can fully appreciate the benefits of a package manager like Python PIP, Node npm, or Ruby Gems since they're doing much more than adding files to your applications path. Maybe I'm missing the point, or I'm being obtuse, but here are the negatives I can see: Separate step when building a project Separate dependency to install via another package manager (yo dawg) More clutter in the projects root with bower.json and / or .bowerrc Reliance on the registry being up to date, correct, and available Some imports / references to things like images won't work The positives I can see are these: I don't have to download the dependencies manually Optionally install packages as part of scaffolding based on user prompts or the like I'd really like to know of any benefits I'm unaware of, and I should say I'm not trying to be provocative I genuinely want to know.

• problem on static link to libsmbclient.a

  I've tried to develop a library using libsmbclient-dev to access net share folders. I wish to static link libsmbclient.a in my project , but a lot of error happens when I tried to static link it, it seems that the libsmbclient.a doesn't include some objects it needed , while everything goes well with libsmbclient.so. Because my project need to support various linux versions like centOS , Ubuntu ..., we wish not to install libsmbclient-dev everywhere. Can anybody tell me that if I can static link this libsmbclient.a in an easy way ? Or what kind of installation strategy should I take to cause less trouble to users? If anyone have use this library to develop projects before , can you tell me how you deal with this case? Thank you very much!!!

My problem is, I don't know how to find a project where I'll fit in. How can I find a beginner-friendly project? What attributes should I be searching for? What are warning signs that a project might not be the right fit? Are there any tools out there to help match people with open source projects? I have learned Hadoop basics on my own and I am pretty comfortable with writing MapReduce Jobs, PIG, HIVE, Flume and other related projects. • Jersey 2.0 Integrated into GlassFish 4.0

  The latest promoted build of GlassFish 4.0 (glassfish-4.0-b43.zip) now contains upgraded Jersey version, 2.0-m05. Users are getting an early access to the implementation of some parts of the JAX-RS 2.0 API Early Draft Review 3. The appropriate JAX-RS bundle, version 2.0-m09 , gets bundled into GlassFish 4.0 as well. What should work The simple answer is: all the basic stuff. We have particularly tested the following two examples: simple hello world webapp multipart webapp Both above linked archives contain adjusted projects, so that resulting war files do not bundle any Jersey dependencies. Both also use Jersey 2 specific Servlet class, org.glassfish.jersey.servlet.ServletContainer, for deployment. • Ubuntu App Showdown: Commercial applications

  Me and a few of my friends decided to create a game for the App showdown. However, we wanted to make a commercial game out of it (for <5$). So the question is: If I want to submit a commercial app, what exactly do I have to do? We would be willing to provide it as open source software but want to sell it in USC anyway. How should I submit the app if we can do that? (Note: we would only open source if it's required, but would prefer to only share the source with the judges. Is that also possible?). Also: If I have to upload the source code to the PPA and let it build by ubuntu's build service: How do I do that with Mono-apps? It worked perfectly for other projects where I had CMakeFiles and stuff like that. But for Mono, I only have a MonoDevelop project file - how to do that right? Thanks
