• Lingering tcp connection in LISTEN state

  My java application can sometimes be killed by an external script. This can be done either with SIGTERM or with SIGKILL. The application is a server which receives many connections per second, and it can be killed while trying to serve them. I would like to restart the application whenever it's killed, so I have prepared a script for that purpose. The problem is that, once the app has been killed, the new application instance can't bind to the port used by the previous instance, because the "Address is already in use". The previous instance's process has been definitely terminated, anyway the offending listening port is still there, but it is assigned to bash (or sh on other machines). Obviouly, my goal is to restart the application and let it bind successfully to the previous address. I've tried waiting more than 200 seconds before restarting to no avail, anyway I can't afford to wait that much. I've encountered this problem on all the machines I've ran the application (which is a jetty server with java 1.6). Any suggestion is appreciated, thanks, Silvio

• How to cope with runaway Flash plugin in Google Chrome browser?

  I'm using Google Chrome for Linux, version 5.0.307.11 (Official Build 39572) beta with the Linux Flash plugin version 10.0 r32. Quite often, the Flash plugin goes wild and pegs the CPU with about 95% usage. Laptop gets hot, battery drains. I can diagnose the problem with Chrome's little process monitor (shift-Esc), and I can even kill the plugin, but then when I actually want to use Flash on a page, I can't find a way to restart the plugin; I have to exit and restart Chrome, which with 30 tabs open is a huge hit. Does anyone know what causes this problem? Does anyone have a better workaround (or heaven forfend, a fix)? [I struct out both with search and with Google's help site for Chrome.]

• IIS FTP service - download timeouts and restarts getting the data twice

  We have an IIS FTP site on a Windows Server 2003 x64 machine. Application Layer Gateway service is disabled (so http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931130 does not apply). Windows Firewall service is disabled as well. Connection timeout for the FTP site (there is only one) is set to 1,200 seconds = 20 minutes. An external client can connect to the site, list directory contents and download small files. When a client attempts to download a large file (eg, if the download continues for 3 minutes, which is still under 20 minutes, but relatively long), the server sends all data, then the connection times out, the client issues REST / RETR commands attempting to restart the download since after the last byte (which I believe should succeed and receive exactly 0 bytes), and the server behaves as if the client tried to restart after byte 0, that is, it sends the entire file all over. Any ideas on how to fix this?

• SQL Server Express 2005 cannot connect

  hi all, I have a SQL Server Express 2005 install on a godaddy virtual terminal which currently is only connected to(locally with mgt studio) every few days or so. Every time i try to connect I get a cannot connect to SQL Server error and after a restart it I can connect just fine locally. I was wondering if there is a timeout setting or something that I am missing that I need to change so that if it is not connected to for a while it does not required a restart? any ideas? thanks!

• Varnish + Plesk : vhost broken

  I have an e-commerce site with 300,000 products and 20,000 categories. It is slow and currently in production. I decided to install Varnish to speed up. The trouble is that during installation, I got a Guru Meditation. Since the site is in production, I am not allowed to leave this error more than a second, thinking to have made an enormous stupidity. I say that there may be a specific configuration with plesk. Has anyone already installed Varnish on a ubuntu 11.04 server with plesk 10? Does anyone have a better resource? I know it is "very vague" as an error, but maybe some of you have had this problem. edit 24/11/2011 I continued to work on Varnish + Plesk ... but it still does not work. 1) I changed the port for apache in plesk General # mysql -uadmin -p`cat /etc/psa/.psa.shadow` -D psa -e'replace into misc (param, val) values ("http_port", 8008)' 1.1) I rebuild the server conf # /usr/local/psa/admin/bin/httpdmng --reconfigure-all 2) I changed the apache conf files (if those were not taking full plesk top) vim /etc/apache2/ports.conf NameVirtualHost *:8008 Listen 8008 2.1) I do the same with /etc/apache2/sites-enables/000-default 3) I changed the port of my vhost (a single server) vim /var/www/vhosts/MYDOMAIN.COM/conf/XXXXXXXXX.http.include Replace the port 80 by this I want. • How to use new disk space after extend attached SAN disk

  I have extended the space of my SAN vDisk from 1TB to 1.2TB, but Windows Explorer doesn't show the new size. After resize the vdisk in the SAN Manager, the Disk Management utility shows the 200GB unallocated space, then I resized the partition to use the unallocated space to get a 1.2TB partition, the process was succesfully, but in the Windows File Explorer the disk still have 1TB of total space. Win version: Windows Storage Server Enterprise 2007. Do I need to restart the server? How can I use the new extra space without rebooting?

• Windows 8 doesn't play nice when dual booting with Windows 7?

  I have Windows 7, and Windows 8 on my laptop. I have Windows 7 set as my default, and it asks me each time if I want to boot with 7 or 8. When I boot with Windows 8, then restart my computer, it opens up to the Windows 8 boot screen, and sets Windows 8 as my default. How can I stop it from changing my default because it's a hassle to change it each time I want to use Windows 8. EDIT: I forgot to mention that in only happens sometimes. It usually doesn't change it when I restart, but it sometimes changes it when I completely shut it off.

• How does RAM fail?

  I have an issue with a Dell Inspiron 15 (1545) laptop that refuses to open any applications (save select Microsoft programs, e.g. Security Essentials, Ctrl Panel, Windows Explorer (not Internet), regedit, Event Viewer, etc.). I've run Microsoft Memory Diagnostics Tool and it found a 'hardware problem was detected.' Does this indicate that the RAM has failed? I notice when I open programs like Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, etc., it always give me an error from WerFault.exe saying The instruction at xxxxxxx referenced memory at xxxxxxxxx. The memory could not be written. and sometimes something about illegal instructions. If it is a hardware problem, does this mean that replacing the RAM is my only option? Again, I would also like to know if RAM can fail (like hard drives) and if malware can cause RAM to fail also.

• Killing an unresponsive process

  I had closed an instance of utorrent. The task no longer appears in Applications, however the process utorrent.exe appears in Processes tab of Task Manager. I tried to kill using: Kill process button in Task Manager Kill process option in SysInternals Process Explorer Suspend, resume, restart in SysInternals Process Explorer command prompt by using the command taskkill /f /im utorrent.exe Stop-Process commandlet in Windows PowerShell. All of these have failed, the process just doesn't end. I cannot restart uTorrent because of the existing process running. Is there anyway I can kill this without having to resort to a system reboot ? I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate, OEM.

• Toshiba Satellite L630 broken after bios update

  I have Toshiba Satellite L630, which has been broken. It had no more OS installed in it. All the disk partition were cleared into one single empty unformatted partition. So I begin to install windows XP on this laptop. Apparently, win XP's driver support for this laptop is very limited. So I have to find almost all important driver (display, sound, etherned, wireless etc) on the net and install it manually one by one. So I start googling, and I got some driver download page from several Toshiba's website (the global version, the europe, asia, etc). Pretty hard to find the exact drivers, but I managed to find pretty good drivers. It's all works quite fine, although still have a few glitches. But everything turned into a big mess when I downloaded the "BIOS Update", which is also listed on Toshiba's official driver directory site. When I installed it, it show a big red warning sign telling me not to do anything while flashing the BIOS . I follow that instruction prudently. The process was finished, and that update BIOS software (it is InsydeH2O BIOS) told me that the BIOS has been succesfully updated and the computer need to restart. So I restart the computer. This is where the problem appear. I can no longer boot to my laptop. The booting process seems to be able to enter windows for a moment (it shows the windows XP loading screen), and then suddenly it just got that hateful blue screen and then instantiy restarts the machine. It goes on a loop. Boot bios - enter XP - blue screen - restart. I can't even try to reinstall my win XP again. Evertime the machine tries to boot to win XP CD, it got the same blue screen as I gets when loading from HDD. Many google search results said that I should open the laptop cover and try to clear CMOS with some kind of jumper or something. Or to unplug/re-plug the CMOS battery. Do I really need to do that? Is there anyway I could do without disassembling my laptop? I read some tricks about booting from USB device but I can't get the exat tools that I need to do that thing...   I'm trying to get a scheduled web script running on a Windows Server and so far the only way I've managed to automate this process is by using the Task Scheduler to open Internet Explorer with the web address as a parameter. I then need to create a separate task to run just after this task to close Internet Explorer (otherwise the task doesn't complete). Is there a better way of doing this? I've also managed to run the script by calling the web address through a Telnet connection to the web server (GET /web/address/here) but I haven't found a way of automating this process on a scheduled basis. Any ideas appreciated

• Linux: find thin server running on port 80 and kill it

  On my Linux server I ran: sudo thin start -p 80 -d Now I'd like to restart the sever. The trouble is, I can't seem to get the old process to kill it. I tried: netstat -anp But what I see on port 80 is this: Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State PID/Program name tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:80 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN - So, it didn't give me a PID to kill... I tried pgrep -l thin but that gave me nothing. Meanwhile pgrep -l ruby gives me like 6 processes running. I don't really understand why multiple ruby threads would be running, or which one I need to kill... How do I kill / restart the thin daemon?

• SSRS/Sharepoint - Reports made in Report Builder not being list in Sharepoint Web Part

  I followed the steps here to integrate reporting services with sharepoint in native mode. I made a page in Sharepoint with the report explorer web part and everything is working. The issue is when I create a report with the web based report builder tool, it will show up in the report manager page, but not show up in the report explorer web part on the share point page. New reports I upload using report manager do show up. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm really stuck.

• Applications don't see mapped network drive after waking from sleep

  I have a network share mapped as a drive letter on a Windows 7 PC that's part of a simple home network. When I wake the PC from sleep, Explorer sometimes says the drive is disconnected. Doubleclicking the drive connects it instantly, as far as Explorer is concerned. But some other applications don't see the drive unless I take additional steps (e.g., navigate to the drive in an "Open..." dialog). Is there any way to get the drive to be connected for all purposes immediately when resuming from standby? I've found the "Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon" item in Group Policy, but I'm not sure what the setting does or whether it would fix this problem. I have network discovery enabled and un-firewalled.

• Winxp system context menus blank after last security update

  Because of a CERT advisory of several out-of-band security updates released by MS I did a Critical Updates pass on my WinXP Pro SP3 machine. I now have the situation where it seems that all of my WinXP-generated menus come up with all items black. If I wave the cursor over the menu, the items will update as they become active (go blue) and then update correctly (to black-text-on-white-background) as they go non-active. Separators (which never get a hover event) stay black. App-level context menus seem to work fine (Firefox, OpenOffice, etc.) with the exception of Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer, which both exhibit this behavior on both their context menus and on their menu bar drop down menus. I'm assuming that's true because they are all using the same library code. Thoughts? Fixes? Help!

  In one tablet computer yesterday I make the usually automatic updates from ms. This tablet have comodo firewall, and and old nod32. After that I notice very soon, that something start sending hundred smtp e-mail the moment the tablet computer is connected to the internet. Also the previous t time I have make updates, some 'virus' gets on the computer but I find very easy and stop it from run. I find using the autostart from sysinternals, and the process explorer. This virus has also break the automatic update from ms, and lost a lot of time to fix it. This is my usually practice when some call me to delete a virus from xp, I use the process explorer and autostart to locate the program, and delete it from everywhere. How ever the last one is so hard to locate. 0.I delete everything from temp directorys and search for suspicious files everywhere, run the nod32, 1.I use the TCPView to see witch program sending the smpt (I see hundred open smpt connections sending emails) but the SMTP was opened by the main service program. 2. I use the process monitor to locate whats happens but find again the main service that do the job. 3.I start delete many thinks on process explorer, but did not found the one that send the emails 4.I open many times the autorun but did not find there also something suspicion, I stop some thinks, but nothing happends. 5.From the last time that I suspect that this virus come to my computer and I partial remove it, he has broke my windows update, to fix it I lost a lot of time, searching on Internet for the error - it was just a register to a dll. 6.From what I suspect something is trigger after the ms update. 7.For the moment I block the email ports, and try to find a way to locate it. I like to notice here that everything is genius - and I mean everything. I believe that this virus pass from a page, or from an e-mail that this computer receive it in the past. Any help or information are appreciate. If you know anything similar, if you know how this virus send emails and how can I locate it, if you know any anti-virus anti-spyware program that maybe can find it.   Fail2ban 0.9 introduce database storage to save bans on restart. But I can't find out the actual mechanism of it work. There is dbpurgeage parameter which controls lifetime of old bans, defaults to 24 hours. As I see from code research, fail2ban saves a ban to the db with timeofban equals to the moment of ban being saved. Then every dbpurgeage period it removes all bans with timeofban < MyTime.time() - self._purgeAge, in other words removes all bans have been stored more than 24 hours ago. But what if an IP was banned for the month? Does all this mean that with dbpurgeage = 86400 after restart in 24 hours I will lost all bans longer than 24 hours? I just want that all my permanent bans will be preserved in any case.

• Which dbghelp.dll do I use for debugging?

  I'm trying to configure symbols in Process Explorer. I have the Windows SDK installed (and thus, Debugging Tools). However, there are two versions of dbghelp.dll -- x86 and x64. Which one do I use? Other sources on the net say to just point to the dbghelp.dll that's in the base directory of the Debugging Tools. But there's no such dbghelp.dll -- they're in their respect 32 and 64 bit folders (i.e., C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\8.0\Debuggers\x64). I'm using a Windows 7 x64 operating system, so does that mean I should load the x64 .dll? Or is it a matter of what I'm debugging? If it is a matter of what I'm debugging, does that mean that I have to switch this .dll depending what process I want to get symbol information on in Process Explorer?

• Troubleshooting Windows Server 2012 storage spaces

  I'm trying the new "Storage Pools" feature on Windows Server 2012, and I've created several disks on the pool. When I restart the server, some of the disks (two, out of four) do not attach automatically, and don't show up in the list of disks. I can go to Server Manager File and Storage Services Storage Pools, and the faulty disks are listed with a yellow triangle beside them. The drive health in the properties are "unknown". But if I right-click and choose attach, the disk comes online, with all the content on it intact. But after another restart, it's the same story. I didn't find any relevant event in the event log, how can I find out why the drives are not attaching?
