• Most secure way of connecting an intranet to an external server

  I have an internal server that hosts an asp.net intranet application. I want to keep it completely and utterly secure and private however we need to expose some information through a WCF service to another server which hosts our external websites which CAN be accessed by the public. What is the best way to pass information between the two servers with regards to an IT setup, while keeping the intranet in house server completely secure and inaccessible? I've heard VPN was the way to go but I wanted to be sure this was the safest way. Another question what would be the most secure way of passing data in the WCF service?

• "Couldn't resolve host" for any external content

  On our site we run a few different scripts for various sites (uploading to amazon s3, data from chartbeat, script to count twitter followers) and all of them just stop working from time to time. They work most days, but then some days (like today) they all just stop working. This simple script to get follower count into PHP $url = "http://twitter.com/users/show/username"; $response = file_get_contents ( $url ); $t_profile = new SimpleXMLElement ( $response ); $count = $t_profile->followers_count; Just sits there for a couple minutes, then finally spits out an error that says "Couldn't resolve host". Any script we use for an external site gives us this error. I'm not really sure where to check what's blocking these connections all of a sudden, and why it seems to work most times, then doesn't for a day or so, then works again. Any tips? • No External Network Access Through Ubuntu VPN

  I have setup pptpd as my VPN server on Ubuntu Server 9.04, I am able to connect to the VPN from the client and can access the server's local network, but I am unable to connect to the external network via the VPN.   The LED display on my MacBook Pro is very blue-ish without correction. In OS X the advanced mode of the display color calibration tool is excellent and I can largely color-correct the display. Windows 7 incorporates a color calibration tool but it is less powerful. It largely consists of a software gamma correction tool and color charts to use with the hardware controls on your display (which don't exist on a notebook or an apple external display). How can I color-correct Windows in Boot Camp to match the OS X correction without using a Spyder or other special calibration hardware?

• Ultrium 3 tape drive shoe-shining, 3Mb/s: and it's not the cable

  I have a HP 960 Ultrium 3 tape drive. Since I got it, (second hand, £90) I've been experiencing shoe-shining. Writing with tar in Linux, I average about 3Mb/s write speed. I've tried replacing both the SCSI card and the cable now, both of which made no difference at all. A curiuos observation I have made is that the write rate is not consistent. Sometimes it will write for over a minute without shoeshining, but more often, just a few seconds. I've also tried several tapes, different source drives, and even writing from Windows Backup, to no avail.

• Formatted a Bootcamped drive as a dynamic disk, now can't boot to either Mac or Windows

  I was trying to create an extra partition to get a file from the Windows side of my Macbook Air to the Mac side, and I accidentally made the disk dynamic without realizing it. I am now unable to boot to the Mac side (holding Alt to go into the system manager at startup doesn't even list the Mac partition), and the Windows side blue screens during boot (goes so quickly that it doesn't even get to the error code before restarting). What can I do to fix the issue? I don't know how to make a bootable flash drive that a Mac will recognize, and Disk Utility (via Internet Recovery) couldn't do anything. • Does placing Google Analytics code in an external file affect statistics?

  I'm working with an outside software vendor to add Google Analytics code to their web app, so that we can track its usage. Their developer suggested that we place the code in an external ".js" file, and he could include that in the layout of his application. The StackOverflow question "Google Analytics: External .js file covers the technical aspect, so apparently tracking is possible via an external file. However, I'm not quite satisfied that this won't have negative implications. Does including the tracking code as an external file affect the statistics collected by Google?

• Restoring a Ubuntu Linux LVM drive

  Scenario: I have a hard disk with a bootable sda1 partition and an Linux LVM. I seem to have corrupted the MBR? or Grub? not sure. I know it no longer boots and even with boot-repair and a Ubuntu live usb I was able to restore it. Following a "fix" with boot-repair I get "missing operating system" Can't i just reinstall grub or a new menu.lst? • Relay thru external SMTP server on Exchange 2010

  My client has dynamic IP on which he hosts Exchange 2010 with POP3 Connector running and gathering emails from his current hosting. Until he gets static IP he wants to send emails out. This will work most of the time but some servers won't accept such email sent by Exchange (from dynamic ip due to multiple reasons) so I would like to make a relay thru external SMTP server which hosts current mailboxes. Normally SMTP server could be set up to allow relay thru it but this would require static IP to be allowed on that server so it would know which IP is allowed to relay thru it. Or is there a way to setup relay in Exchange 2010 so it can use dynamic IP and kinda authenticates with user/password itself on the hosted server?

  Hello, We have a series of products with built in web servers each of which has a login page, a customer wants to create a web portal in which they log into once, from there they can simply click on any of the devices (external websites) and it will automatically login to that site and redirect them to the page after the login screen. The portal is using ASP.NET MVC, the external devices are Windows CE based units running embedded web servers. Can find a lot on scraping, but not much on redirection after the event. • WebDAV mapped drive asking for username and password

  Since we migrated domains we're having problems with mapping a drive using a WebDAV connection in our login script. It's a simple net use x: \\server.domain.com\folder Which used to authenticate automatically (all we needed to do to make this happen was to put the server in the intranet zone in the internet explorer settings). Since the domain migration though, nearly everyone is being prompted for a username and password to connect. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? Any help much appreciated. The webdav share is on a Windows 2003 server running IIS.

  What is the proper way of using a USB hard drive or stick between Linux and Windows? (I'm using Linux Mint 14 and Windows XP on different machines) Should I set it up somehow so that all the files are shared and reused safely between Linux and Windows? The question comes from the recent problem I had. I've created and edited a few folders through Linux and they are not working on Windows now (folder is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupt). While I dealt with that problem, what would be the way of ensuring this doesn't happen again?

  I have a trixbox server and every works find except the external SIPs. Inside net all sound goes fine, but if I use a SIP phone outside the net, I can connect, I can receive calls but I there is no sound. • 1080p playback on external monitor

  My system (netbook) specs: 1.6 GHz dual core atom N2600 2 GB DDR3 RAM Integrated GMA3600 GPU Win 7 Professional 32 Bit Daum Pot Player V-1.5 The issue: I downloaded a 1.33 GB sized 1920 x 1080 HD documentary (file extension: mp4) and it plays without a hitch using pot player. However, when I connected an external display (an LED Full HD 24" monitor) using D-Sub, the video plays fine but the player controls become very unresponsive. For instance, it takes about 40 seconds to exit full screen while playing. I tried: Installed/updated all the latest monitor drivers Updated the VGA drivers for GMA3600 No other programs ran while the video played, with most unwanted services and background processes disabled/killed. CPU usage goes only up to 49% when the video plays Question: What may I do in order to improve the player response/video playback experience? Do I need to play with (or change) Pot Player's default video decoders, etc?

• Adding a single 300Gb SCSI drive to poweredge 2850

  I have a 2850 setup with 3 146Gb drives, two partitions 1 12GB system with server 2003 sp2 and 1 261Gb Data. I am strapped on disk space on the data partition having to push data around. I wanted to add a 300Gb single drive for lesser critical data, is this possible? Or is it best to add 2 300Gb drives for another RAID 1 configuration? This is my church network and while it is mission critical it is not enterprise so I can take it down for a few hours. Any pointers to documentation or direct help would be greatly appreciated. John

• Unable to delete a directory from NTFS drive: "Access is denied"

  I'm running Windows XP Pro x64 SP2. I have a directory on an NTFS drive that was created by a Maven build. A subsequent build attempted to delete this directory and failed. I now get the error "Access is denied" whenever I try to do anything with that directory: change to it, delete it, rename it. This happens both in Windows Explorer and from a command prompt. The properties dialog in Windows Explorer doesn't even contain the Security tab. I created the directory, so I don't think this is truly a permissions issue. I've occasionally had this error happen in the past is well. I believe the error is misleading, but the question is: what is the real problem and how do I fix it?

• USB drive gets infected every time I plug it into my laptop

  Whenever I plug in my USB flash drive into my laptop running Windows XP, an AutoRun.inf file gets created inside it. Also a hidden folder called "Cache" which uses the Recycle bin icon gets created. AutoRUn.inf file cannot be opened in Windows. Both the Autorun.inf file and the "Cache" folder cannot be deleted. I opened the AutoRun.inf file using Ubuntu. I saw that it is trying to run a file Cache\TMP983.exe. I ran all anti-spywares, anti-malwares, anti-viruses, USB autorun eaters, but to no avail. How do I fix this?

• LTO 3 tape drive needing repaired

  We have an IBM LTO 3 tape drive that needs repaired and with the £400 price tag i'm having to shop around for quotes. My question is has anyone actually repaired one before and how was in done? The first error LED was showing a 6, then i cleared the mangled tape only for it to start flashing alternate 'o' on the 7 segment display, simliar to a half 8, flashing top to bottom and it would just flash away like that coupled with a flashing amber light. I tried a reset holding the eject button for it to show an 'r' the go back to flashing again as before. I checked the IBM solutions for the codes but this flashing isn't documented at all. Would be great if anyone had any experience in this area. Thank you, Paul

• Windows 2008 R2: can't extend C drive, mystery partitions

  I have a Windows 2008 R2 server running under VMware ESX 4.0.0. I have reallocated disk space to it in order to extend the C drive, but Disk Management has "Extend Volume" greyed out. DISKPART shows more partitions than Disk Management shows, including one after the volume I'm trying to extend, which would explain why Disk Management isn't allowing the extension. Disk Management shows: System Reserved / 100MB NTFS / Healthy (System) (C:) / 39.39 GB NTFS / Healthy (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump) 10.00 GB / Unallocated DISKPART shows: Partition 1 Dynamic Data 992 KB 31 KB Partition 2 Dynamic Data 100 MB 1024 KB Partition 3 Dynamic Data 39 GB 101 MB Partition 4 Dynamic Data 1024 KB 39 GB My question at this point is: what the heck are partitions 1 and 4, where did they come from, why doesn't Disk Management show them, and, most importantly, can I delete partition 4 in order to extend partition 3?
