• What are the best possible ways to benchmark RAM (no-ECC) under linux / arm?

  I want to test integrity and global performances of no-ECC memory chips on a custom board Are there some tools that run under linux so I can monitor system and global temperature in the same time ? Are there some no-ECC specific tests to do in general ? EDIT 1: I already know how to monitor temperature (I use a special platform feature /sys/devices/platform/......../temp1_input). • Apps not starting on Mac OS X Lion

  I have a strange problem, some apps that I download do not launch. There are 2 scenarios The application starts but keeps bouncing, once I click the bouncing icon in the tray it disappears. The process also closes in activity monitor The application fails to start, how ever many times I launch it, it refuses. • How do I find the source of soft page faults?

  I have Windows 7 x64 computer that according to Performance Monitor has 70,000 page faults / second when idling. That's seems like a lot to me (every other computer I check has basically 0 page faults / second when idling). If I use Resource Monitor or Process Explorer to check hard faults, I see that they are basically 0. So all the page faults are soft. Normally, soft page faults are not a problem, but I suspect they might be causing issues for this computer given there are so many. I would like to identify what programs are causing the soft faults. Are there any tools that exist the display the number of soft page faults for each process?

• WPF: Improving Performance for Running on Older PCs

  So, I'm building a WPF app and did a test deployment today, and found that it performed pretty poorly. I was surprised, as we are really not doing much in the way of visual effects or animations. I deployed on two machines: the fastest and the slowest that will need to run the application (the slowest PC has an Intel Celeron 1.80GHz with 2GB RAM). The application ran pretty well on the faster machine, but was choppy on the slower machine. And when I say "choppy", I mean the cursor jumped even just passing it over any open window of the app that had focus. I opened the Task Manager Performance window, and could see that the CPU usage jumped whenever the app had focus and the cursor was moving over it. If I gave focus to another (e.g. Excel), the CPU usage went back down after a second. This happened on both machines, but the choppiness was only noticeable on the slower machine. I had very limited time to tinker on the deployment machines, so didn't do a lot of detailed testing. The app runs fine on my development machine, but I also see the CPU spiking up to 10% there, just running the cursor over the window. I downloaded the WPF performance tool from MS and have been tinkering with it (on my dev machine). The docs say this about the "Frame Rate" metric in the Perforator tool: For applications without animation, this value should be near 0. The app is not doing any heavy animation, but the frame rate stays near 50 when the cursor is over any window. The screens I tested on have column headers in a grid that "highlight" and buttons that change color and appearance when scrolled over. Even moving the mouse on blank areas of the windows cause the same Frame rate and CPU usage (doesn't seem to be related to these minor animations). (Also, I am unable to figure out how to get anything but the two default tools--Perforator and Visual Profiler--installed into the WPF performance tool. That is probably a separate question). I also have Redgate's profiling tool, but I'm not sure if that can shed any light on rendering performance. So, I realize this is not an easy thing to troubleshoot without specifics or sample code (which I can't post). My questions are: What are some general things to look for (or avoid) in the code to improve performance? What steps can I take using the WPF performance tool to narrow down the problem? Is the PC spec listed above (Intel Celeron 1.80GHz with 2GB RAM) too slow to be running even vanilla WPF applications?

  I belong to an independent IT firm that manages and maintains about 50 business clients networks, ranging from small 5 system networks to 200+ systems. Because we are unable to directly monitor each server at these locations (distributed over a very large area) on a regular basis I am looking for a method to monitor and alert us to any problems that may arise so that we can respond quickly with, hopefully, preventative measures. I'm not sure what solutions are available for this type of situation, but something that utilizes a central server at our business with all client servers sending alerts or logs to it for daily monitoring might work best. All these servers are running a Windows Server OS. In your opinion, what would be the best course of action to accomplish this?

• Multiple Graphics cards - Non Multi-Display Setup

  Is it possible for me to utilize the processing capabilities of multiple graphics cards, even if I'm only using one monitor? I recently bought a new AMD graphics card, fairly top of the line. I also have a two year old, decent nVidia card. They're obviously very different cards. I don't really mind for gaming because my current card can handle most games fine by itself. I'm concerned about video editing programs such as Adobe Premiere and After Effects. Would the system be able to utilize the power of both cards to, say, render a video? I have both drivers still installed on my machine. And because there is only one monitor connected to my current graphics card (AMD) the nVidia would be connected to no display. So I am wondering whether it would or could be utilized in some way to help in processing video. Thanks!

• Using PCIe and onboard together

  I'm currently using my PCI Express card to run 2 monitors and my onboard to run another. It works fine despite people saying it won't. I use a gadget to monitor my PCI card but would also like to monitor my onboard GPU as well. I play a game called Eve Online and when I'm running my accts I can only get 20 fps. Before, when I was using just my PCI card, I was getting 60+. To solve this, I set the display options to interval immediate, it was set to one before. My computer handles it no problem at all, but I was always told this was immpossible. I was hoping someone could explain how and why this is working. Thanks!   I'm interesting in monitoring our EC2 instances to ensure we scale up when necessary. Right now we are monitoring idle CPU time as our metric. We aren't measuring disk IO as we are not a very disk intensive application. When running on our own hardware in a datacenter I also usually monitor "load" from the top command. My question is: Does it make sense to monitor "load" on a shared env such as EC2? If so, how do you interpret the results?

  I've got Lenovo W500 with D-SUB and DVI ports. Most of the time I work with a docking station which has D-SUB and DVI ports, as well. I used to have laptop + 22" monitor (DVI) configuration. Now I've got laptop + 22" (DVI) + 19" (D-SUB). I was trying to configure everythin but with no success. I've got ATI V5700 in my laptop. And my ATI CCC allows me to only have one external monitor attached at the time. :( Is there any workaround to this situation? I'd like to have the configuration I've just descripted: laptop + 22" (DVI) + 19" (D-SUB).

• PHP to serial with weird baud rates

  I am trying to use PHP to send text to an LED sign so I can send support ticket numbers to it. The sign itself is a piece of work; it came from eBay and is poorly made with almost no documentation. After fiddling with it for a while, I was able to figure out the way it expected stuff to be sent to it and that the baud rate is 28800. I already know how to communicate with stuff like this using PHP, but I don't know how to change the baud rate to something nonstandard. I've tried other baud rates, and haven't been able to get it to work.

• New wxpython controls not displaying until resize

  I have created a custom control (based on a panel) in wxPython that provides a list of custom controls on panel within it. The user needs to be able to add rows at will and have those rows displayed. I'm having trouble getting the new controls to actually appear after they are added. I know they are present, because they appear after a resize of the frame, or if I add them before Show() is called on the frame. I've convinced myself it's something basic, but I can't find the mistake. • IE7 Times Out Debugging ASP.Net Page

  My issue is similar to ASP.NET Debugging Timing out with IIS except that I'm using the built-in ASP.Net Development Server with VS 2010. If I pause for more than about 10 seconds in the debugger, IE7 "disconnects" from the web server with the error message Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage However, unlike in the similar question, the debugger is still running. If I refresh the browser it will post that refresh to the server and I can debug the page from the top again. Is it possible to configure things so that IE7 waits (much) longer before giving up? If it makes a difference, I'm launching IE using the "Start external program" option and passing a localhost URL as the command line argument (since Chrome is my default browser). I also specify a specific port.

• Downloads speed starts ok but after a few seconds they go down to 10kbps?

  Since yesterday any file I try to download from any host start downloading ok (at 1mbps) but after a few seconds the speed start to decrease down to 10kbps. I use a mobile modem (huawei) and I connect to a wcdma network. What could be happening? I use kaspersky, and I checked the Network Monitor and I don't see any weird process using bandwidth. What other tests can I run? Recommend me some app to monitor the traffic to see if I have some malware or see where my bandwidth goes.

• Viewsonic VG2427wm detected max resolution too low

  So I have a Viewsonic VG2427wm, which supports max resolution of 1920x1080 and I had it working at this resolution from both windows and linux PCs. Now, I need to connect it to my Dell XPS17 (L702x), which has only DP mini and HDMI, so I'm trying to connect this monitor via HDMI-to-DVI adapter (doesn't work at all) and via DP-mini-to-DVI adapter. The later works, but is limiting my max resolution to 1680x1050. Using same two adapters to connect my dell monitor works fine, so I don't suspect any of the adapters to be faulty. The driver is the latest viewsonic driver (although it's been last updated 3 years back). Any ideas, how I can force it to display it's correct native resolution?

In my aspx file I have set Async='true' but when I run the application and click the button it appears as though the page waits to refresh until the processing of the BackgroundWorker is done. • Updating table takes very long time

  Hi all, I have a table in MsSQL Server 2008 (SP2) containing 30 millios of rows, table size 150GB, there are a couple of int columns and two nvarchar(max) columns: one containing text (from 1-30000 characters) and one containg xml (up to 100000 characters). Table doesn't have any primary keys or indexes (its is a staging table). So atm I am running a query: UPDATE [dbo].[stage_table] SET [column2] = SUBSTRING([column1], 1, CHARINDEX('.', [column1])-1); the query is running for 3 hours (and it is still not completed), which I think is too long. Is It? I can see that there is constant read rate of 5MB/s and write rate of 10MB/s to .mdf file. How can I find out why the query is running so long? The "server" is i7, 24GB of ram, SATA disks on RAID 10. Many thanks!

  Hi, so I want to do something like when you press on LogOut, you get a waiting message like "please wait.." while its running ucp.php?mode=logout in the background, and after it has loaded that it should refresh the site. How should this be done?? • Problem with Wicket and SignInExample in IE8

  I have an interesting problem with Wicket. I'm basically duplicating the 'authentication' example from the v1.4.x in SVN. It works fine in FireFox and Chrome but not in IE8. When in IE8, after I click the submit button it returns with a 404 error but i can manually paste the "destination" url in and it goes there fine (as an authenticated user). Another scenario is, I try to login, it gives me a 404, I hit refresh (looking at the html source I see the page version incremented), relogin and it works fine. So to summarize: I login the first time in IE8 and it returns a 404 error, hit refresh and ogin again and it works fine. I login the first time in IE8 and it returns a 404 error, manually paste the destination url in the browser and it goes there fine as if im logged in. I've compared everything between IE8 and FireFox from the rendered source and the code is not doing anything special but I cannot figure out what the differences are? Thanks. KJQ

• How do I make YouTube videos fill up an entire screen when using dual monitors?

  I am using a dual monitor setup on Ubuntu 9.10 using the TwinView configuration in NIVIDA X Server Settings. My total resolution is 2960x1050 pixels, and my individual monitors are 1680x1050 (primary) and 1280x1024 (secondary). When going into fullscreen mode on any video on YouTube, I only see a cropped version of the video on my primary display as seen below. This does not occur on any other video sharing website - they properly make the video to fill the entire screen on my primary monitor. To my knowledge this problem only happens on YouTube.
