• Which steps are needed to change motherboard on Windows 7 without reinstalling?

I have heard that with Windows XP is not that easy because SATA drivers are not available by default, but maybe for Windows 7 things are easier.   Is there a way to edit the subject line of emails you've received in Thunderbird? I use email a lot for work and it would be a lot easier if I could change subjects to make things easier to find later. I found a plug-in but it only works for Thunderbird up to 2.0 and I'd rather not have to downgrade to get this feature.

  This is my first attempt at virtualizing SQL server on VMWare and I want to make sure I am doing things correctly. Should I have SQL server installed on the C: drive / same partition as the OS, Then add a virtual disk for the Data files, say 300GB, and then another virtual disk for the log files say 100GB? Or should I add 2 300GB vdisks, for the data files mirror them in the operating system, and then add a non mirrored vdisk of 100GB for LogFiles??

• Windows 7 laptop fonts DPI is too big breaking certain applications

  I have just installed windows 7 on a laptop and the fonts seem to be doing weird things, Ive adjusted the DPI back to 100% (was 125% by default) however certain applications (old delphi programmed ones) do not look correct still. Here is a screen shot comparing my laptop to my PC running the same software (ROCLink RTU configuration software), the PC looks fine but the laptop does not. • How to make Linux reliably boot on multi-cpu machines?

  I've got two machines, one with 4x12 AMD Opteron cores (AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 6176), one with 2x8 Xeon cores (HT disabled; Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2660 0 @ 2.20GHz). On both machines I experience difficulties during boot of Linux using recent kernels. The system hangs during the initialization of the kernel, before or just when initramfs started initializing the hardware. Yet, only one core is used. Also, the kernel of RHEL6 seems to work fine. I suspect that there are some patches used to make things work. Using the kernel config file from RHEL6 and building a more recent kernel yields the same problems. On the Xeon machine, things got better by disabling Hyperthreading completely. The machine now boots successfully on at least 4 out of 5 times. And if it boots, multicore stuff works just fine. However, I'm wondering about what to do about the AMD machine. So to sum it up: Gentoo kernel 3.6 - 3.11 won't reliably boot those machines unless you reduce the amount of cores (e.g. via nolapic). RHEL6 kernel (which is 2.6.32) boots just fine. RH kernel config used to build a 3.x kernel won't yield a working kernel. Not distribution specific (apart from the kernel being used). These stack traces got printed every minute or so. The kernel seems to be stuck in an endless loop. Yet, a recent kernel is needed for various reasons. So the question is: What does the RHEL6 kernel do, what vanilla or gentoo kernels don't do? Is there a boot option that might lead to a reliable boot with all the cores enabled? Best, Adam

RIM's documentation includes just a rudimentary description of the specs, but I'm looking for things like the actual detailed hardware/chipset info so we can research the accuracy needs for some upcoming projects we have. Knowing simply "A-GPS support" isn't really good enough... Does anyone know of any resources for finding advanced specs for built-in Blackberry hardware?

• Why is the installation of certain programs always such a pain in Linux [closed]

  I am new to Linux and I am trying to set up a server. For this I sometimes to need to install special software, but the installation of this is always such a pain. For example I wanted to try the htscanner to see if it did the job for me. When i got to the page there is NO INSTALLATION guide. I had to search for the right one on google. Even on google its a pain to find the right method. Just try it - google search.After a long search and tried different things I finally found out that I had te install some more software before it will work. The website says that the version I used did not had any dependencies. Thats a lie. Release0.8.1: No dependencies registered. You do need certain things for it to work. After managing to set it up it still didn't work I can't figure out why because there is no official guide on the website. So I wanted to just uninstall it and find a better solution. Uninstalling. Uninstalling something in Linux is a real mystery how this actually works. The best answer I got is to manually look for the files and delete them. Whats up with that! There is never something said about uninstalling on the websites. Even on the website of CentOS itself it tels you how to install something like rpmforge packages (it's a miracle they tell you and not have to google it) but there is no mention of what to do when you want to uninstall. Why not? The forums you get on when trying to solve your problem are most of the time in plain text, and you have to scroll trough huge error logs before you see somethings that vaguely resembles your question if you are lucky. The Question My question is if there are any recommended websites / forums that explain the basic concepts of installing and uninstalling software on Linux. And explain other useful operations. And not Wikipedia or the first hits of Google, I have been there already. I am looking for some easy to read trough guides on these operations on Linux. I have been on a lot of websites that explain some Linux operation, but I bet its easier to get a degree in rocket science than to read trough the website and understand what they try to say.

• Active directory integration not working properly with winbind and samba

  I'm trying to get my linux box to use active directory authentication. I believe I have almost everything setup correctly. I'm able to issue wbinfo -g and wbinfo -u and see all the groups and users respectively. Brief intro to my setup: The username I use on my linux box to do admin things is nick. My active directory username is nwalke. They have two different passwords. I am able to log in to the box with nick and that user's password and I'm also able to login as nwalke with nwalke's password. The curious bit: Upon creating the active directory user's home directory, I run a script that requires root access. This is to setup some system wide things like a samba share for them. When I log in as nwalke, I enter my nwalke password and it succeeds. I'm then greeted with [sudo] password for nick:. If I enter my nwalke password here, it says Sorry, try again.. If I enter nick's password, it says Sorry, user nick is not allowed to execute scriptname as root. If I do groups as nwalke, I see that magically my user has been given the group nick. Now, I accidentally thought that nick had a UID of 100, not 1000. So originally in my smb.conf I had idmap uid 1000-10000. The only thing I can think of, is that I logged in with nwalke while that was still set and now I'm just being presented with a UID of 1000 forcing linux to think I'm nick. I'm not really sure where to go from here. Like I said, I'm fairly certain active directory is communicating with my server properly, but something must not be mapped right on the linux side. Any thoughts? • ubuntu update problem: freezes on "preparing to update mysql-server-5.1"

  I'm trying to update my ubuntu desktop. When it tries to update mysql-server-5.1, it freezes up saying preparing to update mysql-server-5.1. It won't let me do any other updates, because it says that things are broken, and tells me to reinstall this. I don't use mysql-server, so i would be happy to just remove the whole thing. But it won't let me do a remove.

• Experiences with hosted (off-site) Microsoft Dynamics CRM?

  We're currently testing Microsoft Dynamics CRM hosted by Fpweb. I've been asked by the lead on the project how we can increase the speed at which CRM pages in IE load. The delay seems reasonable to me for a virtual server located across the country. Has anyone succeeded in speeding things up with aggressive caching (i.e. a WAN accelerator) or by some other means? Do your employees complain about the speed of hosted Dynamics CRM?
