• Time lag between PreRenderComplete and SaveState

  We are tracing our ASP.NET application and find that for one of our pages we see that there is a time lag of around 2.5 secs from the time PreRenderComplete Ends to SaveState Begins. • What's the RegEx to make sure that delimiters are escaped?

  I'm looking for a regular expression that will check whether or not delimiters in a string are escaped with a backward slash. The delimiters I am concerned about are comma (\,), colon (\:), semicolon (\;) and of course the backward slash itself has to be escaped (\). For example, the string "test" should return a match because there are no delimiters in it, and no escaping is necessary. The string "te\;st" would return a match because the semicolon delimiter is escaped. "te;st" and "t\;s:t" would both fail because the both contain at least one delimiter that is not escaped. I know that I need a conditional and a positive look behind, and this is what I have so far, but it is not giving me the expected answer. ^(?<delimiter>[:;,\\])?(?(delimiter)\(?<=(?:\\\\)*\\)k<delimiter>|.)$ Any suggestions on how I can make this work? • WPF: Bind DataGrid to List<String>

  Funny, how sometimes the simple things bite me in the behind. I can bind a DataGrid nicely to a Collection of some arbitrary class, using a DataGridTextColumn like this: <DataGridTextColumn Header="Name" Binding="{Binding Name}"/> Now I want to bind a DataGrid to a simple Collection. So since there is no property "Name" or something like that to bind to, how do I write the binding: <DataGridTextColumn Header="Name" Binding="{Binding ???}"/> String has no Property "Value" or something like that. And if I just write {Binding } I'll end up with a one-way-binding, unable to write changes back to the Collection. Thinking about it, I think it is not possible to bind to a collection, so I do need to wrap my string into a class? Or is there a way?

• Why does Java return a date in GMT-4.5 when choosing Co-ordinated Universal Time time zone in Window

  We have seen a strange issue on some Windows XP machines involving the "Co-ordinated Universal Time" time zone. Not all Windows XP machines seem to have it, but on those that do, the following simple Java program public class TimeTest { public static void main(String[] args) { System.out.println(java.util.TimeZone.getDefault()); System.out.println(new java.util.Date()); } } on JDK 1.6.0_06 prints: sun.util.calendar.ZoneInfo[id="America/Caracas",offset=-16200000,dstSavings=0,useDaylight=false,transitions=5,lastRule=null] Fri Nov 13 05:34:14 VET 2009 (i.e. 4 and a half hours behind GMT). I should add that I am based in London, and have never been to South America. :-) My questions are: Where does Java get this time zone from? I thought Co-ordinated Universal Time was supposed to be the new name for GMT. Why do some Windows machines have this time zone but not others?

  I admit, I'm an .NET n00b. Basically what I'm trying to do is I have a page with a text box on it and an image button. On click of the image button I want it to show a view control I have set up. Inside this view control is an image and some text. Well when I click on the button for submit, I get the "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." error message. Where am I going wrong?

• Codeigniter deny access to directory of controllers with apache config

  I’d like to restrict access to a folder of controllers that are used for admin purposes only. I’ve tried a number of ways and not coming up with a solution. These controllers are behind password protection. But, I’d like to just remove it from view if someone happens to stumble upon the right directory. Can this be done? I’d rather not do it from htaccess. I have access to the apache config files, so I’d like to handle it there. Does it have anything to do with the way Codeigniter routes? Or, am I just way off? This what I’m using that doesn’t work <Directory /var/www/application/controllers/folder/> Order deny,allow Deny from all Allow from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx </Directory>

• Where and how to store functions in asp.net.vb

  Hi. I am using visual studio 2008, asp.net.vb I have various functions; 1 that calculates totals, 1 that calculates averages, 1 that calculates percentages etc. The data they act upon is different depending on the particular web page, but all my pages use these functions. So I want to know how I can store these functions in a single place so that all of my web pages can access the routines. At the moment all I know how to do is to write seperate functions in the code-behind for each individual web page. Obviously that is just so long winded and inefficient, but try as I might I can't figure out how to do it better. Please can anyone help. Many thanks.

  I need to make a Function that receives a Session Key and a Session Value and call this function on a normal HTML onClick event. When this function is called the Session variable is assigned the Key I sent with the Value I sent. • What's the deal with char.GetNumericValue?

  I was working on Project Euler 40, and was a bit bothered that there was no int.Parse(char). Not a big deal, but I did some asking around and someone suggested char.GetNumericValue. GetNumericValue seems like a very odd method to me: Takes in a char as a parameter and returns...a double? Returns -1.0 if the char is not '0' through '9' So what's the reasoning behind this method, and what purpose does returning a double serve? I even fired up Reflector and looked at InternalGetNumericValue, but it's just like watching Lost: every answer just leads to another question.

  I was expecting to find that in the NSAttributeDescription class, but only the default value is there. Behind the scene I tought a validationPredicate was created but trying to reach it using NSDictionary* dico= [[myManagedObject entity] propertiesByName]; NSAttributeDescription* attributeDescription=[dico objectForKey:attributeKey]; for (NSString* string in [attributeDescription validationWarnings]) just get me nowhere, no validationWarnings, no validationPredicates... any thoughts on this ? Edit1: It seems that getting the entity straight from the managedObject doesn't give you the full picture. Getting the Entity from the NSManagedObjectModel permits to reach the validationWarnings & validationPredicates...

• How can I get jquery .val() AFTER keypress event?

  I got: $(someTextInputField).keypress(function() { alert($(this).val()); }); Now the alert always returns the value BEFORE the keypress (e.g. the field is empty, I type 'a' and the alert gives me ''. Then I type 'b' and the alert gives me 'a'...). But I want the value AFTER the keypress - how can I do that? Background: I'd like to enable a button as soon as the text field contains at least one character. So I run this test on every keypress event, but using the returned val() the result is always one step behind. Using the change() event is not an option for me because then the button is disabled until you leave the text box. If there's a better way to do that, I'm glad to hear it!

  Hi, The use case I want to achive is. 1. Fetch XML from a remote URL. 2. Convert it to HTML using XSLT 3. Insert the generated HTML at a position in my ASP.NET web forms page. Alternative on the above, if 1 returns a 404: 2. Generate HTML which display an error message to the user. Only step 3 is left as I've completed 1-2. As there are logic for handling the two execution paths and performing the XSLT-transformation I thought it would be suitable to keep it in the code-behind file. What's a good, clean way of inserting generated HTML at a position in my ASP.NET web forms page?

  I tried with below example, it is working fine. I expected it to pick sub-class's value since object won't be created for super class (as it is abstract). But it is picking up super class's field value only. • Is this the correct why of speaking to a "Content Manager" Class?

  I am creating a silverlight site. I am currently breaking out my ideas into pieces of functionality. One of the idea's I have is the concept of a content manager. This is essentially a UI control with 4 regions. Top, Bottom, Right & Left. I also have a collection of objects that are considered "Menu Items". These are controls that function as a way to navigate around, similar to links. The idea I have is to implement an IMenuItem interface. Among the standard pieces of information (Text, PageReference, etc) I was also going to hold a reference to the content manager. My idea behind this thinking is that I can pass the PageReference to a property on the ContentManager and then call a method which knows how to update the content manager accordingly. Is this the best way of implementing this or is their some sort of pattern for it?

  Occasionally I read news articles that mention about some computer models that computer scientists use to predict winners of some sporting events or the odds for betting which I think there must be a mathematical model behind it. I never bothered to think twice even though I am a "pseudo computer scientist" myself. With the 2010 FIFA World Cup just underway, and since I am also a "pseudo football/soccer player" myself, I just started to wonder about these calculations algorithms. For example, I know one factor is determining the strength of opponents, so that a win against a strong opponent can count more than a win against a weak opponent. But it now kind of gets in a circular loop, or at least how does one determine the strength of a team in the first place, before that team can be considered strong or weak? If it's based on a historical data then there's no way that could be accurate, because those players of the past are no longer on the fields so their impact is none (except maybe if they become coaches like Maradona) Anyway, long question short, if you're happen to be working in this field or have some knowledge, please shed some lights.

• Creating triangles using borders

  I recently needed to create speech bubbles. To create the little tip at the end of the speech bubble, i used a css technique where the element is given a 0 width and 0 height and given borders. Making certain borders transparent would create diagonals. This works great, and i am able to manipulate different borders to create triangles/shapes to my liking. The problem is, i don't fully understand why this works. I understand that it all starts out with a rectangle and as you set one or more of the borders to transparent it creates a diagonal. My question is how does this work ? And why does it create a diagonal in the first place ? EDIT: To clarify, i would like to know the theory behind why this technique works.

  This question is particularly aimed at descriptions and explanations of what is happening in a computer program, as well as any general advice or approaches for undertaking technical reports in Computer Science at both undergraduate and graduate levels. You see, I am having particular difficulty in the best way to explain what is happening. As in, given any given program from a multi-agent system to a standard webservice, the best and most eloquent way to say exactly what is going on, the logic behind it and it's respective justifications. Should I avoid saying class names? Avoid specifying methods? Keep referring to class variables and any particular references? I'm banging my head against the wall at trying to keep a solid technical foundation and making it accessible to people of all backgrounds. Apologies for the rather vague question. Cheers.

  Hello there, In my app, I am composing an HMTL email message with the 3.0+ MFMailComposeViewController. To do this, I created an HTML file, with some placeholders. In my code, I read the HTML file, and with replaceOccurrencesOfString, I replace the placeholders with data from the app. In that way, I compose the body of the email I want to send out. This is all working very nicely, except for the fact, that in my HTML file, I have an <img src='imageplaceholderpath' /> tag. Somehow, I cannot figure out, with what I should replace this imageplaceholderpath, in order to refer to an image that resides in my app. Is this a valid approach at all, and if so, what would be the syntax/logic behind the path I should put there?   Hi friends, I have a button, while clicking the button i just produce a div containing some checkbox. If the user select the required checkbox, it will produce a iframe according to the value of the checkbox and the div will disappear. Its placed immediately below the button. Up to this its working fine. If the user again click the button, the droping div is comes behind the frame. Please help me to make it visible above the frame.   I have an asp.net page with a code-behind class definition as follows: public partial class examplepage : System.Web.UI.Page I'd like to set a public property within the page that I can reference from other classes. My understanding is that if I cast to examplepage then I should be able to get at the public property that is specific to example page, as in: string test=((examplepage)HttpContext.Current.Handler).propertyX; However, when I try casting as above the compiler does not recognise examplepage. Can anyone tell me how I can cast? I have no specific namespaces defined. Thanks

  The act of checking in files in a source control repository like git, mercurial or svn, is called a commit. Does anyone know the reason behind calling it a commit instead of just check in? English is not my mother tongue, so it might be some linguistic I don't quite get her, but what I'm I actually commiting to? (Hopefully I'm not commiting a crime, but you'll never know.) Is it in the meaning of "to consign for preservation"? Is it related to transactions (commit at the end of a transaction)?

• c# 4.0 - best way to refactor a block of "If (something is Type) {}" statements?

  I've got some code that looks like this, public void ResetControls(Control controlOnPage) { if (controlOnPage is TextBox) { ResetTextBoxControl(controlOnPage); } if (controlOnPage is MediaPicker) { ((MediaPicker)controlOnPage).Media = null; } if (controlOnPage is RelatedContentPicker) { ((RelatedContentPicker)controlOnPage).RelatedContentCollection = null; } ... ... foreach (Control child in controlOnPage.Controls) { ResetControls(child); } } The idea behind it is that I can pass a page to the method and it'll recursively reset all the controls on it to their default states - in the case of MediaPicker and RelatedContentPicker, these are user controls that I've created. FXCop warns me "Do Not Cast Unnecessarily" for this code - but I'm unsure how to rewrite it to make it better. Any ideas?
