• Cannot install Android 2.3 libs dies to missing ia32-libs-multiarch

  I need to get my box up to par or android development, but cannot get ia32-libs to install for the life of me. Can anyone help? The error Android's tool gave me was Stopping ADB server failed (code -1) and after a bit of investigation I found that I needed to install the ia32-libs which from my understanding is a pain. • Can't untar Testdisk 6.14 using live CD

  I'm using an Ubuntu LiveCD right now and need to recover files from a (Windows 7) partition. I've read about TestDisk and tried downloading it and untaring it but: testdisk-6.14-WIP.linux26.tar.bz2: Cannot open: No such file or directory tar (child): Error is not recoverable: exiting now tar: Child returned status 2 tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now I don't know why it doesn't work (noob). • How to install an older version of Java

  I updated my installation of the sun-java6-jdk package today to version 6.24-1build0.10.10.1 after being prompted by the update manager. However this now causes some compilation failures so I'd like to revert back to the previous version that I had installed. I've tried using Synaptic but the 'Force Version' menu command is disabled. I've tried the following command to install the previous version sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jdk=6.22-0ubuntu1~10.10 But I'm not sure that I have the correct version: Reading package lists... • Game Code Design for Rendering

  I first created a game on the iPhone and I'm now porting it to Android. I wrote most of the code in C++, but when it came to porting it wasn't so easy. The Android way is to have two threads, one for rendering and one for updating. This due to some devices blocking when updating the hardware. My problem is that I am coming from the iPhone. When I transition, say from the Menu to the Game, I would stop the Animation (Rendering) and load up the next Manager (the Menu has a Manager and so has the Game). I could implement the same thing on Android, but I have noticed on game ports like Quake, don't do this - as far as I can tell. I have learnt that I cannot just dynamically add another Renderer class the the tree because I will probably get a dequeuing buffer error - which I believe to be a problem with the OpenGL ES side. So how is it done?

• Increase the size of a memory mapped file

  I am maintaning a memory mapped file to store my tree like datastructure. When I'm updating the datastructure ,I got this problem. The file is limited on it's size and can't be too long or too small. I have a methods like void mapfile_insert_record(RECORD* /* record*/); void mapfile_modify_record(RECORD* /* record*/); Both operations could lead to exceed the space which is free on memory file. How do I overcome this? What strategy I should use. calculate whether it requires to exceed the file as a pre-condition on both methods. Dynamically exceed it , for a example manage a timer and constantly polling file for it's free avaliable size and then automatically extend it. Any ideas or patterns to overcome this problem?

• Fedora login gone after Ubuntu updates on a dual boot

  After a software update for Ubuntu, my dual boot with Fedora will not show Fedora in the start menu. It just boots into Ubuntu and when I hold Shift and boot, it only has Ubuntu in the list. • Why does my CD Tray keep popping open?

  I have Ubuntu server - Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS and I can't figure out why my CD tray is opening all the time. I have looked into /var/log/auth.log, cron list and found nothing. The eject command closes tray and then it gets opened again. The server has a LAMP (Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP) setup and I can't afford to restart it now. How can I find out who or which program is popping the tray open? Which programs can cause this behavior?

  I was wondering if there were any resources that explain concepts/theory behind GUI development. I don't mean a resource that explains how to use a GUI library, but rather how to create your own widgets. For example a resource that explains different methods on how to implement scrollable listboxes. I ask because I have an idea for a game tool where I would like to create my own widgets and let users drag and drop them onto some kind of form. How do GUI libraries usually draw widgets? I'm not sure if reskinning widgets from a GUI library fits my needs, since widget behavior needs to be dynamic based on user interaction.

• When starting or log off/on, add'l panels show and some panel applets are duplicated

  After upgrading to 12.04 Gnome Classic amd64,every time I log on a new additional blank panel appears on the top and bottom panels - which I delete every time. In addition, the default panel applets are duplicated in the original panels. Also the panels in the second screen are empty (in addition to the wallpaper being hidden). Update: As suggested by fossfreedomm I created a new user and the same behavior occurred. I increased the height of the panels (2436) and the added panels did not change. If I don't remove the added panels and log off/on I get still another - they accumulate. If I switch user instead of logoff/logon, the add'l panel do not appear.

• Workaround the flip queue (AKA pre-rendered frames) in OpenGL?

  It appears that some drivers implement a "flip queue" such that, even with vsync enabled, the first few calls to swap buffers return immediately (queuing those frames for later use). It is only after this queue is filled that buffer swaps will block to synchronize with vblank. This behavior is detrimental to my application. It creates latency. Does anyone know of a way to disable it or a workaround for dealing with it? The OpenGL Wiki on Swap Interval suggests a call to glFinish after the swap but I've had no such luck with that trick.

• Unity launcher Hebrew locale

  I am setting up a user account for someone wanting to use a Hebrew locale in Ubuntu 13.04. Everything nicely aligns to the right-hand side when using the Hebrew locale, except for the Unity launcher. This still sticks to the left-hand side, which sort of looks very odd in an otherwise right-hand side locale. See the screenshot Now I know moving the Unity launcher position is not possible normally, but one would expect that it automagically aligns to the right-hand side in a right-hand side locale. When setting up the account, I first set the locale to English (since I myself don't understand Hebrew), and only later changed it to Hebrew. Is this the "wrong" way of setting up a right-hand side user-account, or is this left-hand side launcher the expected behavior of Unity even in a right-hand side locale?

• Are you aware of any client-side malware that sends lots of junk requests for .gifs?

  I am getting dozens of 404 errors on my site that are requests for gif's with apparently random names, like 4273uaqa.gif and 5pwowlag.gif. I see that most of them are coming from one user. I assume something is happening in the background on her machine without her knowledge -- a malware thing on the client. Have you seen this behavior before, and do you know what sort of malware might cause it? Would love to advise my customer that s/he has an issue. I'd also like to stop getting these 404 reports.   I'm trying to create a particle that will 'circle' my character. When the particle is created, it's given a random position in relation to my character, and a box to provide boundaries for how far left or right this particle should circle. When I use the phrase 'circle', I'm referring to a simulated circling, i.e., when moving to the right, the particle will appear in front of my character, when passing back to the left, the particle will appear behind my character. That may have been too much context, so let me cut to the chase: In essence, the path I would like my particle to follow would be akin to a sine wave, with the left and right sides of the provided rectangle being the apexes of the wave. The trouble I'm having is that the position of the particle will be random, so it will never be produced at the same place within the wave twice, but I have no idea how to create this sort of behavior procedurally.

• How can I get the business analysts more involved in BDD?

  I am a proponent of Behavior Driven Development, mainly with Cucumber and RSpec, and at my current gig (a Microsoft shop) I am introducing SpecFlow as a tool to help with testing. I'd like to get the business analysts on my team involved in writing the features and scenarios, but they are put off by the "technical" aspect of it, meaning creating the files in Visual Studio (or even having Visual Studio on their machines). They want to know if we can put all the scenarios for a feature in Jira. What I'm looking for is suggestions for a workflow that will work well with BA types that are accustomed to project management/work tracking tools like Jira (we also use Greenhopper).

• What is the benefit of writing to a temp location, And then copying it to the intended destination?

  I am writing an application that works with satellite Images, and my boss asked me to look at some of the commercial application, and see how they behave. I found a strange behavior and then as I was looking, I found it in other standard applications as well. These Programs first write to the temp folder, and then copy it to the intended destination. Example: 7zip first extracts to the temp folder, and then copies the extracted data to the location that you had asked it to extract the data to. I see several problems with this approach: 1.The temp folder might not have enough space, while the intended location might have that much space. 2.If it is a large file, it can take a non-negligible amount of time for the copy operation. I thought about it a lot, but I couldn't see one single positive point to doing this. Am I missing something, or is there a real benefit to doing this?

• How will Deja-Dup operates when backing up to an external USB drive?

  I want to set up regular backups, and deja-dup seems like a nice tool. However, I want to put my backups on an extension USB drive that I have, not on a remote network location. Naturally, this drive is not always connected. If I configure deja-dup to backup to a directory on this drive (e.g. /media/extention/backup), what would happen? Will it prompt me to connect the drive when it is missing (the desired behavior), or just fail silently? Is there some way to tweak it to do so? I can roll my own cron-based backup script that checks if this drive is mounted, but I would really prefer to use an existing, integrated tool.

• Seeking a free Lint for C which programmers will *want* to use

  When I try to persuade others to Lint their code I always get excuses - too difficult to set up, too difficult to understand, false positives, etc (most of which translates to too lazy, too stupid or too afraid of new things). Is there any way that I can make Linting easier? We code in C using Netbeans. Can I incorporate Splint into Netbeans? I did find a Splint GUI which was quite good, but there was no way to lint a directory tree. Any ideas? Thanks in advance

• Is client side JavaScript capable of ~replicating the Node.JS module loading system?

  I like the Node.JS style of JavaScript, where I can write all of my functionalities into smaller files and then require those neatly from within my code. I'm even thinking about trying to write a framework to mimic that behavior in client-side JS. My goal would be to implement the module loading system as accurately as possible - See Module docs. For require(), I can use things detailed in answers to this question, most notably JQuery's $.getScript(). It seems to me that other aspects of the module loading system should be possible as well. So I'm asking more experienced programmers here first, before I waist my time: Is there something that I'm missing that's going to cause such an attempt to fail miserably, or can this be successfully done?
