• How can I debug a Perl program that suddenly exits?

  I have Perl program based on IO::Async, and it sometimes just exits after a few hours/days without printing any error message whatsoever. There's nothing in dmesg or /var/log either. STDOUT/STDERR are both autoflush(1) so data shouldn't be lost in buffers. It doesn't actually exit from IO::Async::Loop->loop_forever - print I put there just to make sure of that never gets triggered. Now one way would be to keep peppering the program with more and more prints and hope one of them gives me some clue. Is there better way to get information what was going on in a program that made it exit/silently crash?

  is there any Simple opensource live audio streaming Server using WCF? I need it to have simple structure: it should listen to some url format like http://example.com/service/stream?write&id=ANY_STRING and if any data comes to such address format it'll start making it avaliable by something like this http://example.com/service/stream?read&id=ANY_STRING Main thing here to be able to stream live data thru WCF service not buffering it just sharing stream. So can please any one help me with such idea? I think not only I have seen such problem with WCF alot on different sites so answer will help the WCF comunyty alot. I hope. BTW: I know some people say WCF is not prepared for live streaming over bacikHTTPbinding but hey! We all need it to, and we ask MS alot so some day they'll make it beter and we all want to be prepared for it.

  Hi, I can't wrap my brain around this one so I hope someone can help. I have a song track that has the song length in milliseconds. I also have the date the song played in DATETIME format. What I am trying to do is find out how many milliseconds is left in the song play time. Example $tracktime = 219238; $dateplayed = '2011-01-17 11:01:44'; $starttime = strtotime($dateplayed); I am using the following to determine time left but it does not seem correct. $curtime = time(); $timeleft = $starttime+round($tracktime/1000)-$curtime; Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• MySQL Rating system (calculating average from two tables).

  I have two tables, videos and videos_ratings. The videos table has an int videoid field (and many others but those fields are not important I think) and many records. The videos_ratings table has 3 int fields: videoid, rating, rated_by which has many records (multiple records for each fields from the videos table) but not for all records from the videos table. Currently I have the following mysql query: SELECT `videos`.*, avg(`videos_ratings`.`vote`) FROM `videos`, `videos_ratings` WHERE `videos_ratings`.`videoid` = `videos`.`videoid` GROUP BY `videos_ratings`.`videoid` ORDER BY RAND() LIMIT 0, 12 It selects all the records from table videos that have a rating in table video_ratings and calculates the average correctly. But what I need is to select all records from the videos table, no matter if there is a rating for that record or not. And if there aren't any records in the videos_ratings table for that particular videos record, the average function should show 0. Hope someone could understand what I want... :) Thanks!

  I'm making a data prosessing system, which currently is using csv-data as input and output form. In the future I might want to add support for example database-, xml-, etc. typed input and output forms. How should I desing my program so that it would be easy to add support for new type of data sources? Should simply make for example an abstract data class (which would contain the basic file prosessing methods) and then inherit this class for database, xml, etc. cases? Hope my question is clear =) In other words my question is: "How to desing a file prosessing system, which can be easily updated to accept input data from different sources (database, XML, Excel, etc.)".

• how to controller (start/kill) a background process (server app) in ruby

  hey guys, i'm trying to set up a server for integration tests (specs actually) via ruby and can't figure out how to control the process. so, what i'm trying to do is: run a rake task for my gem that executes the integration specs the task needs to first start a server (i use webrick) and then run the specs after executing the specs it should kill the webrick so i'm not left with some unused background process webrick is not a requirement, but it's included in the ruby standard library so being able to use it would be great. hope anyone is able to help! ps. i'm running on linux, so having this work for windows is not my main priority (right now).

• Does the Internet make us less good programmers? [closed]

  With all the information and code available nowadays on the Internet has that diminished our capability of remembering or learning stuff just because we know they're available somewhere out there, just a Google away or a StackOverflow question away? For example I find myself visiting php.net quite often to check the syntax of the same functions over and over again, not because my memory sucks, but I don't feel like keeping the information in me, since I know I'll find it again on the net. And about StackOverflow, isn't the process of figuring things out on your own supposed to improve your programming skills? If the answers are all just clicks away, do we actually learn something or just keep a pointer in our heads where to search for it again when we need it? Your thoughts are welcome. Hope it doesn't shut down as subjective or anything, the answers would be really interesting ;)

• How can you stream results as json string downloads?

  I'm interested in presenting results faster in my mobile app. Is it possible to stream results out as the string downloads? I'm thinking about implementing an IObservable to push out the results as they are downloaded, but I don't know what algorithm to use to properly piece together the data which could be incomplete at any given point. Hope that was clear enough. CLARIFICATION: Guess it wasn't clear enough. My issue is the string downloaded is quite long. It can often take 15-20 seconds or more to download. I want to reflect changes faster to my user, so I would like to use reactive extensions to pump out entities as soon as a complete one is received. My issue is I dont know how to build the parser that can pick out complete entities from an incomplete response string.

• IB z-order on simulator 6.0

  Consider the above's IB objects listing. Siblings further down the list should be on top of the siblings listed further up when rendered on the screen. Under Xcode 4.5.2, everything is ok if iphone simulator 5.1 is used. But for simulator 6.0 the map just covers everything. The same if using actual devices (phones) for testing. Hope that somebody knowledgeable could help. Please also add comments if you do not find such a problem on simulator 6.0. Because chances are the problem is related to how my project is setup. Update : Have setup a test project with the iOS 6 map view. There seems to be no problem with the z-order. So the problem should relate to my code.

• How to access device settings on a S60 symbian based mobile phone?

  Hello everyone, I recently bought a Sony Ericsson mobile phone which embeds Symbian S60 and I would like to add a missing feature myself. In fact I cannot actually disable Internet connection in an easy way when roaming, which cost me a lot of money last time I moved away ... So I would like to develop a little application that would just replace the actual Internet configuration with a fake configuration to avoid auto-connections. So what I would like to know is how can I access programmatically to my phone settings? I believe that this is possible but I do not really have a clue where to start. I know that Sony Ericsson provides a SDK to run Java applications on its customised JVM but Symbian is also providing a SDK to develop applications for S60 devices in many languages. The real questions is which SDK will provide an API able to access phone settings. This is not well documented so I am asking this question with the hope that someone here already had experience with development for Sony Ericsson/Symbian devices. Thanks.

  Hi, we have a VB6 binary executable that comes with no source code. And we need to change the label text for that VB6 application from "AAA" to "BBB". Is there any way or tools that can do that? The closest tool I can find right now is microsoft UISpy, it can read all the other elements but not the label. I hope there is a tool that can change the resource in the .exe so that the label "AAA" will read "BBB". Or is it possible to write a wrapper application, it will launch the .exe, examine the application screen for "AAA" and change that to "BBB"? Thank you for your help!

• How to only show simpleTip if certain conditions are true?

  I'm working on my first jquery project and have a question regarding the simpletip plugin. I basically have a calendar where the user can click different meeting titles and the corresponding dates get shaded in with a certain color. I am then using the simpletip to display more detailed information about the meeting when the user hovers over that date. What I want is for the simpletip to only display if the cell is colored in, or "on". When the calendar is blank and no meetings are activated, I don't want all the simpletips to show. I have tried using an if statement with a .mouseover() - this works at first, when the cells are off, no simpletip. After the meeting is turned on and colored in, the first mouseover does nothing, then the second mouseover shows the simpletip, and then the simpletip remains active even after the cell is turned off. • Displaying conditional amount of fields in UI (Android)

  I am using layout xml documents for my ui controls. I need to create and remove these controls (input fields) on the fly, based on how many results I get back from my database. For each group, there can be 0..* fields and these are prepopulated from the database. Also, it would be good if I can invoke a method to create an additional field; something like the address book, where you can click + or - to add or remove a phone or other detail. In a "psuedo" style, I'm guessing something like this: Check database - How many of X are there [y]? Create Y fields. The user may then add new fields, so once I click submit i need to apply all of that to database. Any examples or hints greatly welcomed. Hope this make sense! :)

• CSS fixed div. Avoid unwanted overlapping

  I've got a CSS layout made of 2 columns. the navigation column to the left is a fix div. It stays there while scrolling down the main content in the column to the right. The problem comes when I reduce the browser window, or zoom in: when scrolling the browser windom horizontally, the main content on the right starts overlapping the navigation column on the left. How can I fix it so that whatever the size of my browser window or my zoom level is, when i scroll horizontally the fixed div isn't overlapped but pushes the main column to the right?   I am currently building my own CMS for various reasons that could take a long to explain... However i am looking for a dynamic solution to create templates for pages within the CMS and all areas must be editable via the administration area, maybe large text areas broken into multiple areas, text and image area on a page etc. Following on from the above i would like to create the following: Create a new page (selecting a pre-defined template like below) http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/9872/nestedpages.png and then upon editing the page it would have created as many text editors required for each editable region or a file upload control for an image area for example. i am thinking of using nested masterpages for the design elements, just unsure the best-practice way to achieve the above (db structure etc) I somehow hope this provides enough information but are happy to answer any questions you may have.   Hi This is pretty hard to explain but i'll give it a shot. Working with Safari to create an extension as is now possible with Safari 5 - how would I go about getting the URL of the current page with using JavaScript and the Safari API? I would also like to be able to get a hyperlink that is selected. For instance in Safari when you right click on a hyperlink and it says open in a new tab, open in a window etc - clicking opens that hyperlink. • Any Problems Using Samba as a Windows Domain Controller?

  We're looking to run a Windows domain using Samba+OpenLDAP on Ubuntu as a domain controller. The documentation out there is a bit spotty and out of date, especially when it comes to installation, which features are supported, and how well. Once this is set up, we hope to be able to use integrated authentication of our IIS sites (including Sharepoint) against the domain controller. Anyone out there who has done this already? Anything specific we should watch out for? Or is it not worth the hassle of trying to set up?

  OK, this isn't really a question to achieve anything practical, but still it is a serious question and I hope it will be taken seriously and mods won't punish me for this :) I'm sure majority of you have seen some good action movie, where CIA or FBI or hackers or any other "pc nerds" are "retrieving some information" and when they actually show their screens/monitors/desktops, there is a lot of random data being displayed and it's just so thrilling :D So, we're shooting a movie and I need to reconstruct such a scene. My OS is ubuntu 10.10. I think i've read somewhere on the internet once that shell can actually be recorded and then played back, but I'm not sure how it worked.   ok say I am on revision 4. I check it out, make some change and commit it. I am not on revision 5. I check it out again, am making some changes, but I am informed that there was a typo from revision 5 that needs to be changed right away. I don't want to fix it in my current working copy because I am in the middle of something and it wont be ready to commit yet. But I don't want to revert back to revision 5 and loose all my work. what I want to do is go back to revision 5, make the small change, commit it. And ALSO have that change made to my current working copy as well. I hope that makes sense. Is there a way to do that?

  Lets have 2 repositories, one containing the actual data repo and a bare repository which is loaded with deltas from the actual data repository by doing a git push from data repo to bare repo. Hope you have understood the model that am using here. Am creating clones by cloning the bare repo, and i will be pushing from the branches in my local clone to the branches in bare repository. When am pushing data from my branch to bare repo, the data is automatically synced to the data repo by a hook. The question i have - is there a way to find from which branch a code has come to the bare repo. I can see the source and target branch during a git push, but after pushing can i see from logs or other way to identify from which branch and repository the data has been pushed from? If there are 5 developers pushing to bare repo, can i find in the bare repo from which branch and clone a code is pushed?

• JSONP parsing error from WCF

  Answered my own question I had a problem with a jquery (jsonp) call to a WCF service that was throwing a json parsing error. Using ASP.NET 4.0 on the WCF side and jquery 1.7 on the client side. Turned out there was an old set of script tags on the page using language = VBSCRIPT. The browser was interpreting the returned json packet of script as "VBscript" instead of javascript. I placed a set of empty javascript tags at the top of the page and the browser is now interpreting the json as the proper javascript function. Hope this helps someone else. Tom
