• Game World Design [on hold]

  I have one doubt about world game developing. I want to do a kind of platform game mixed with RPG (Side Scroll). What's the best to draw the world, - Draw everything than use the camera to move around the world - Draw just what you see as the player moves draw the new stuff. I'm new at this and didn't had any course for it. So if anyone can help me thanks :) PS: Any recommendation to learning game concept, like drawing world theory, play etc.. (not code and i want to 2D and i only see books for 3D stuff)

• Mouse buttons and all keyboard buttons except alt and super randomly stops working

  A couple of times lately, unity appears to not accept button presses from neither the mouse or the keyboard. This happens after a random amount of time, usually a couple of hours, or right after boot. The weird thing is: I can still move the mouse around. I can press alt to get the unity menu thingy (but i can't type anything in it) I can press super to show/hide the unity search. None of the applications seem to get the input Ive tried connecting a second mouse, same issue I can press ctrl+alt+f1 to drop to a shell tty The shell works fine Now, this is definitely a bug, probably in unity(?), but it's hard to search for when I don't know what's causing it. Is there something I can do to debug? I've found some people that appears to be having the same problem with the mouse only, but most of the time, their questions are unanswered or closed for being too specific. What would be a good strategy to fix this? Should I report it as a bug?

• Enabling Multi-touch features of the Apple Magic Mouse on Ubuntu 12.04

  I want to write a simple app that uses Apple's Magic Trackpad, nothing special, just so that it recognizes atleast one gesture. The thing is, Ubuntu itself doesnt really recognize this device. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 and by default the device works with 1 finger, but without tap-click or doubletap, 3 fingers move the window and 3 finger spread makes it fullscreen. I managed to enable 2 finger scrolling with "xinput set-prop 8 'Two-Finger Scrolling' 1 1", but thats about it. No other gestures work, ginn doesnt start, giesview detects the device but doesnt respond to any of the gestures, and touchegg doesnt start either. I tried example apps from qt that come with ubuntu but they dont work. So... what do i do? i tried using qt but all i get from the app is "Got touch without getting TouchBegin for id XX" what else can i use to get my app to work with multitouch devices?

• Why do meshes show up as bones in the Model class?

  Right now I'm working on a 3D game and I've come across something very weird. When I created the model in Blender, I added an armature named "MyBone" to the stage and attached a cube ("MyCube") to it, so that when I move the armature, the cube moves with it. I exported this as an FBX and loaded it as a Model object. What I expected to see was: But what I got was this: I'm really confused. Why is the mesh I created showing up in the bone list? • Problems with Silverlight 3 Bitmaps

  As many people move to Silverlight 4, some of us that still have old projects in Silverlight 3, I havent found any solution to the below problem just yet, just a workaround for now. Still when using Visual Studio 2008 and Silverlight I receive this error on BitmapImages, something that looks like got fixed in Visual Studio 2010 and Silverlight 4, I havent tried in VS2010 and Silverlight 3. • What's the best way to create animations when doing Android development?

  I'm trying to create my first Android game and I'm currently trying to figure out (with someone that will do the drawings and another programmer) what the best way to create animation is. (Animations such as a character moving, etc.) At first, the designer said that she could draw objects/characters and animate them with flash so she didn't have to draw every single frame of an action. The other programmer and I don't know Flash too much so I suggested extracting all the images from the Flash animation and making them appear one after the other when the animation is to start. He said that would end up taking too much resource on the CPU and I tend to agree, but I don't really see how we're supposed to make smooth animations without it being too hard on the hardware and, if possible, not have the designer draw every single frame on Adobe Illustrator. Can an experienced Android game developper help me balance this out so we can move on to other parts of the game as I have no idea what the best way to create animations is.

• How can I host a website on a dynamically-assigned IP address?

  I recently upgraded my internet to the point that it is much faster and more reliable than my current webhost. I would like to move my current domain to be hosted at home, but my IP address is dynamic. As far as I know, I only get a new IP when I restart my modem and or router (which is almost never) or when cable one (my ISP) pushes out a firmware update (rarely). There are a few ways I can see doing this: Convince my ISP to give me a static IP Assign my router my current IP to force a static IP (which might work?) Set my DNS record to my current IP address and update it on the rare occasions that it changes. Obviously I'm hoping that the first one works, but I don't want to pay a lot of extra money (if that's what it takes) to get a static IP address. Which of these options will work most reliably?

  I want to set anchor point for the sprite like cocos2d has done for their implementation. I do not found any thing like that in andengine so please provide guidance on that. I want to move the sprite on touch so I use following code but that does not work for me. super.setPosition(pX - this.getWidthScaled() / 2, pY - this.getHeightScaled() / 2); Because I touch on the corner of the image but automatically it comes at center of the image because of above code. I want to remain the touch at desire position and drag it. For me the anchor point became useful. But I don't found anything in andengine.

• Making profit from a social network

  This follows similar questions but I'd like to see if anything particular comes out of it due to the nature of site. In short, I've taken up the role of webmaster for a small social network site and wish to make it profitable to at least cover the running costs. The site is linked to a commerce and presents are offered to members according to the number of points they've accumulated through various actions. The site is running on shared hosting so it's probably dirt cheap but the presents can be expensive as a whole and some money has already been invested into the project. One idea I have is to seek some sponsors that would be willing to offer presents or special offers in return for publicity. I don't know if this will be easy or not. I'm also looking into adapting hosting to perhaps move static files to a cheaper online storage medium (see Ideas for reducing storage needs and/or costs (lots of images)). Other suggestions are welcome.

• Can't enable Bluetooth 13.10

  I'm a new user to Ubuntu. I previously installed Xubuntu 13.04 on my Compaq nx8420 and was able to use Bluetooth with no issues. I recently performed a clean install of Ubuntu 13.10 (not Xubuntu), and now can't enable bluetooth. I go to the default Bluetooth app, move the slider to 'On' and it slides straight back to 'Off'. Do I need to install any extra packages or use an alternative app to get Bluetooth working? I can't think of a reason why it would work in Xubuntu 13.04, but not Ubuntu 13.10. • Dynamic vs Statically typed languages for websites

  Wanted to hear what others thought about this statement: I’ll contrast that with building a website. When rendering web pages, often you have very many components interacting on a web page. You have buttons over here and little widgets over there and there are dozens of them on a webpage, as well as possibly dozens or hundreds of web pages on your website that are all dynamic. With a system with a really large surface area like that, using a statically typed language is actually quite inflexible. I would find it painful probably to program in Scala and render a web page with it, when I want to interactively push around buttons and what-not. If the whole system has to be coherent, like the whole system has to type check just to be able to move a button around, I think that can be really inflexible.   If you were going to write a chess game engine, what programming paradigm would you use (OOP, procedural, etc) and why whould you choose it ? By chess engine, I mean the portion of a program that evaluates the current board and decides the computer's next move. I'm asking because I thought it might be fun to write a chess engine. Then it occured to me that I could use it as a project for learning functional programming. Then it occured to me that some problems aren't well suited to the functional paradigm. • Remove Duplicate Second Unity Launcher on Dual Screen

  See attached image. On my dual screen display I have a Unity Launcher on the left hand screen and also on the right hand screen. Both work perfectly fine. I don't want two Unity Launchers. Every time I move my house to the right hand side it gets slowed down over the right launcher hampering my productivity. I have an Nvidia card with the Nvidia driver and I am using TwinView. Could somebody please tell me how to remove this extra duplicated launcher?

• There is any reason for which a delete method/field/function refactoring doesn't exist?

  An operation in an interface is obsolete so I decided to delete it. It seems that there is no automatic support for such a "refactoring". For me is a refactoring operation since the behavior of the code will be preserved since nobody(tests, client apis) will notice that the operation was removed. In eclipse, in java code, on an method in an interface I have the following options: rename, move, change method signature, inline, extract interface, extract superclass, use supertype when possible, pull up, push down, introduce parameter objet, introduce indirection, generate declared type. There is any reason for which a delete method/field/function refactoring doesn't exist?

• Component-based design: handling objects interaction

  I'm not sure how exactly objects do things to other objects in a component based design. Say I have an Obj class. I do: Obj obj; obj.add(new Position()); obj.add(new Physics()); How could I then have another object not only move the ball but have those physics applied. I'm not looking for implementation details but rather abstractly how objects communicate. In an entity based design, you might just have: obj1.emitForceOn(obj2,5.0,0.0,0.0); Any article or explanation to get a better grasp on a component driven design and how to do basic things would be really helpful.

• How to filter content in the cureently opened folder?

  there is one thing I'm missing since I've been forced to move from osx to ubuntu. for osx there is wonderful file browser named Path Finder which has very handy filter function build in. the search field in the Path Finders upper right corner isn't searching your whole HD, it's not searching in all the sub folders of a given directory (like in nautilus). it's just filtering the content of the folder you have currently opened whithout loking in to the sub folders. is there something similar (plugin, exstention...) available for nautilus? two users are already asking the same question, but the answers obviously missed the point.

• C# creating a simple snake game

  I was thinking about creating a snake game with C#, so I ran ideas in my head, and some problems came up. How can I track and output in the correct location the blocks that run after the snake's head? If the snake is built of five blocks, and the user starts going in a circle, how can I print the snake body in the right location? Also, how can I create an action that will run on the background, which will move the snake forward, no matter what the user does? What structure should my code have? (code design structure) This should be a console application, since it's the only framework I am familiar with. I am not looking for finished code, since I want to really understand how it should work.

• Wrapping up an Exciting Mobile World Congress

  Its been a busy week here in Barcelona, with noticeably more energy at the show than in 2010. This year, we decided to move the Java booth to the App Planet and really engage with the increasing number of developers that are attending the event. Our booth featured 10 demos and a series of nearly 25 workshops featuring a variety of topics ranging from information about Java Verified, to the use of web technologies with Java ME, to sessions hosted by Operators such as Orange and Telefonica (see image to the left).One of the more popular topics in our booth was the use of Java in the Smart Grid. • How to disable three finger gestures on touchpad?

  I am using 12.04 on a macbook pro. Everything works really well. I want to disable 3 finger gestures. It is way to easy to accidentally drag/move a window(3 finger gesture) while scrolling(2 finger gesture) when using a touchpad. I found this answer on ask ubuntu. It was marked answered but it is not. The functionality is still there. All this recommendation does is disable the drag marks on the window. This may be tricky because I want to disable 3 finger gestures but not 2 finger gestures. (ie I don't want to disable touchpad gestures all together)

• Symlink are using both locations?

  Ive made a research and didnt found any answers, so I decided to ask here. To make you know, the /dev/sda2 disk of my WHM/Cpanel webserver got 100% full. The /var/ folder are the /dev/sda2 and I've found the reason of that isse are the /var/lib/mysql folder. To fix it I need to move the /var/lib/mysql folder from /dev/sda2 to /home/ where I have a lot of space in disk. Then I used the command lines: service mysql stop cp -r -p /var/lib/mysql/ /home/databasesmysql/ mv /var/lib/mysql /var/lib/mysql.backup/ ln -s /home/databasesmysql/ /var/lib/mysql service mysql start Ok, now to check if its running at the new location I just renamed the /var/lib/mysql to /var/lib/mysql.backup and MySQL stopped working. Also when I rename the /home/databasesmysql/ folder MySQL also stop to work. I dont know whats happening, the symlink are using both locations? Thanks very much.

• Keyboard freezes when xorg crashes.

  Situation is like that. Many times has happened that Xorg freezes and with it also keyboard. Quite some times because of some Compiz effects or Flash (fullscreen switch). Keyboard becomes totaly unresponsive, while mouse still works (I can move cursor, but can't click since desktop freezes) and music still plays and I can connect trough ssh. This is the only way I know I can try to solve problem - either by killing browser&flash or lastly restarting xorg server. This problem appears on more than one Ubuntu computer. My home dekstop with proprietery nvidia driver, on my work where I use noveau driever (opensource driver for geforce) and sometimes (but rarely) also on laptop with ATI graphics (using r300g driver which is really good!). Can someone explains why mouse still works while I can't input from keyboard? (I can't switch to virtual console or do R-E-I-S-U-B command) I have USB keyboard and USB mouse.
