    I am trying to set up a VM on my Ubuntu 13.04 Desktop and it's giving me error when I try to start the VM. The error states: virsh # start vm1 error: Failed to start domain vm1 error: internal error process exited while connecting to monitor: W: kvm binary is deprecated, please use qemu-system-x86_64 instead char device redirected to /dev/pts/2 (label charserial0) qemu: at most 2047 MB RAM can be simulated What is the workaround for this, if any?

  • Inverted function keys (F1-F12) on HP Pavilion dv4t

    (I know there have already been a lot of questions about this, but none of them mentioned the dv4t specifically.) I'm thinking about getting an HP Pavilion dv4t-4200 or -5100, but something that's really irritating me is that by default the function keys (F1-F12) are "inverted"—without holding the Fn key, the function keys do things like change the brightness, change or mute the volume, and switch to an external display. Only if you hold Fn will they actually produce F1, F2, etc. This is not how keyboards are supposed to work. Is there any way to disable this "feature" that has been verified to work on the HP Pavilion dv4t-4200 or HP Pavilion dv4t-5100? I don't want to buy this computer unless this is possible.

  • What does "Local Domain Name" on router do and how do I get it to work?

    I have a D-Link DGL-4500 router. One of the settings is "Local Domain Name," which I have set to local (see screenshot). What I expect is for me to be able to hit my computers via name, e.g. m6.local should resolve to one of my computers; but this isn't happening. I know that I can do this via hosts file, but it would be neat if I could do it via the router... plus I have devices like an iPad that don't let you edit the hosts file. Am I misunderstanding this router feature or am I doing something wrong?

    I have a Asus EEE PC 1005P which I installed a Command-line system on using the Alternate Installer CD of Ubuntu Lucid Lynx. Altough I think this is a general linux and grub2 question. I do not have (or want) the X Window System installed. I want to change my console screen resolution (not inside X) to 1024x600.   • Build a RAID-5 USB Array or NAS?

    I'm looking to build a RAID-5 or RAID-6 hard disk array to be used as a centralized backup location for my home network. I have a lot of 4-8GB DVD ISO files which I intend to serve over the network to my TV using DLNA or something similar. I need decent write times, fast read times, and preferably a way to connect this array to my network router over USB. I'll probably be using ext3/4 on it (I'd use btrfs if my router supported it :-[). Is there a way to build a RAID array that is accessible over USB? I'm kind of new to this and most guides assume you're running a RAID array inside your machine. I need at least 5TB of space, and I need redundancy, so I prefer RAID-6. How can I go about accomplishing this?

The damn thing makes an amazing amount of noise, and isn't too fast either. What I want is a state of the art, fast, quiet DVD reader, preferably not even a burner. What should I get?

  • Port forwarding + shared connection with Ubuntu

    Because my wireless router's ethernet ports are defective, I set up a shared wireless connection from my laptop (which has wifi) to my eMac (which does not) via a crossover ethernet cable. The laptop is behind a router as 192.168.1.131, and the eMac is behind the laptop as 10.42.43.1 . The laptop is running Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic). I achieved the shared connection through NetworkManager Applet. I right-clicked on the network icon at the topright, went to Edit Connections, selected the Wired connection named "Auto eth0", clicked "Edit...", went to the "IPv4 Settings" tab, and selected the Method "Shared to other computers". The eMac can now access the Internet. Now I want to enable port forwarding. There's a game I want to play that needs port 6112 forwarded (both TCP and UDP) in order to host games. I set up the router to enable port forwarding for 192.168.1.131 (the laptop), but port forwarding still isn't available on the eMac. I suppose I need to pretend my laptop is a router and configure port forwarding on it, indicating that incoming connections to the laptop (192.168.1.131) should be forwarded to the eMac on the shared connection (10.42.43.1 ). Thus, packets coming into the router on port 6112 would be redirected to the laptop (by the router), then to the eMac (by the laptop). My question is, how would I do that on Ubuntu (in light of NetworkManager's presence)? Also, if I can't get this to work, does anyone mind hosting a comp stomp? :D

  • Strange. Asterisk key plays random Windows sound when pressed

    This is a new one on me. When I press the "asterisk", or * button on my number pad (but not SHIFT+8), Windows makes either a "Exclamation" or "Windows ding" sound. I haven't noticed a pattern to which sound is made. Logitech K200 keyboard No special key mapping software or Logitech software running Realtek sound to stereo through optical cable. Visual Studio 2010, Chrome, Fiddler, WinRAR, Notepad++, and Dropbox running. No unusual behavior otherwise. A solution isn't terribly important but my curiosity is both piqued and stumped. This doesn't normally happen and nothing odd has taken place otherwise. Ideas?

I am at an actual lost, with no way into the router I cannot test settings. I have unplugged it, left it off for a 32 hours, and reset it with no luck. Any ideas? Could the router just be done-zo?

    So, I'm trying to update Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 via the Windows Store, but every time I attempt to, the update downloads properly, but then I get the error: Windows 8.1 This app wasn't installed - view details When I click on it, it says: Something happened and the Windows 8.1 could not be installed. Please try again. Error code: 0x80070004 Try again Cancel Install What does this mean? A quick Google search yields nothing. I have tried rebooting, clearing the store cache, and resetting Windows Update. A quick chkdsk scan shows no errors.   • Prevent Cisco VPN from interrupting home networking

    I just got a new laptop, and for the most part have left its settings alone. Today I was trying to get some sharing going between my desktop and the laptop. Both machines are connected to the same wireless network and both machines consider that network to be a Home network. Both are running Win7 Home Premium. It seems like my laptop is aware of my desktop on the network. It can ping it by IP or by computer name. When I go to Network from the laptop, I can see the desktop in the list of computers. However, my desktop cannot ping the laptop, nor can it see it within Network. My desktop has a Homegroup set up, but my laptop says "There is currently no homegroup on the network". I do have network discovery turned on for both machines. Why can my desktop not "talk" to my laptop but it works the other way around? Update: Disabling the Windows Firewall on the laptop somewhat fixes the problem. With it disabled, my desktop can ping my laptop, but still my laptop can't see the homegroup. Also, it can ping via hostname, which resolves to IPv6, but can't ping via the IPv4 address. Obviously I'd rather not leave my firewall disabled, so I need a more specific fix. Update 2: Aha! It is the Cisco VPN software I was running to connect to work computers. Once I disconnected and exited from that, the two PCs seemed to be talking normally and the homegroup was visible to the laptop. So now my question has morphed: how can I prevent Cisco VPN from interrupting my home networking?

    Ok, this is strange problem, and I couldn't find any solution for it yet. This happened today then @work I plugged in external speakers jack, speakers was playing, everything was OK. But after I took jack off, I couldn't hear any sound from mac speakers. It seems like disabled. So now I only can listen music through headphones or external speakers but not mac speakers.   • 2-Bay External HDD Enclosure in JBOD mode fails to detect both drives (Linux & Windows)

    I recently purchased a couple of USB 3.0 External HDD Enclosures to use for storage and backup; the idea was to have one act as backup to the other, with 4 x 3TB drives in total. However, the second drive in each is not accessible in either Linux nor Windows, and I could not determine the reason. 1. Situation The two enclosures are slightly different (couldn't find them in stock at the same time) yet from many little details appear to be the same Chinese base design with a tweaked outer shell. The models are: Sharkoon 2-Bay RAID Box Fantec MR-35DU3 The drives are Seagate 3TB Barracuda ST33000651AS, firmware CC44, all identical. From reading manuals and online sources, I determined that JBOD would be the optimal setup for my needs -- addressing the two drives separately in each enclosure would be important, making it easy to swap drives and mix&match them if needed; all the other modes implied the controller doing a combination of the drives. The software used was Debian GNU/Linux - testing/wheezy - kernel 2.6.39-2 and Windows 7 Ultimate. 2. Description of the problem Now, here comes the problem: every time I connect either of the enclosures to a PC using the supplied cable (tried a different one as well), only the HDD in the top bay is readable, the one below is detected yet errors out in various ways. According to the manuals, it should not happen: in JBOD, the system should be able to "see" two separate drives upon connection. This happens with both enclosures and any combination of HDDs (i.e. if I swap them, the same thing happens), so the HDDs are good and I think so are the enclosures (two different companies making similar products that failed in an identical fashion would be very unlikely). The top HDD can be used fine every time, I actually tried a speed test from Linux and got about 150MiB/s reads, so all is working as it should; the one below refuses to work every time. So the failure is consistent. To make sure this was not some obscure Linux bug, I tried the same under Windows 7, and the system also only created one drive letter for a drive of 3TB size (so it was only seeing one instead of both). Placing an older, known good, 2TB drive in the top bay made that the one recognised, so we have the same issue under Windows as well. Log entries under Linux (tested here with a 3TB and a 2TB drive so I could differentiate them; either one works in the top enclosure, in the test setup the 3TB one is on top).     I have a wireless bluetooth mouse which I'm not using. It used to have a bluetooth adapter with it, which I lost a long time ago ... (don't ask). Since my regular mouse just died (bad contact in cable from messing with it too much) I was thinking of buying just the new generic bluetooth adapter ? Are all those adapters the same thing ? Or can this that came with the mouse be somehow different ? Edit by ldigas: How would one find out what bluetooth standard/class/adapter one needs ? (I don't see anything useful written on the sticker on the mouse). Or to put it bluntly - will it work with this one in your opinion ?

  • Macbook Pro 2010 Ethernet Jumbo Frame(9k MTU) Support?

    Has anyone been able to use jumbo frame support on their 2010 Macbook Pros? This is kind of negative news here, but I am seeing many reports that this is not available anymore due to Apple's choice of network card in the new machines. I cannot set my MTU speed over 1500 on my new 2010 MBP i7, but my old early 2008 MBP (Core2) has the 9000 MTU setting for use. Everything I have is setup to use jumbo frames and I thought apple kept that feature in their "pro" lineup. It sounds like the Mac Pro still has it. Did they decide to use a chipset that doesn't support it? I am trying to pinpoint some solid chipset numbers and the feature support. Maybe they just need to update the drivers? Is there some more official information about this feature? This might seem minor, but this is really frustrating if apple removed this feature from their pro laptop line.   • itunes iphone sync stuck on "Waiting for items to copy"

    superuser crowd, I've found a number of threads about this, but have yet to find a satisfactory answer. Perhaps I'll have better luck on this site?? I hope so... I'm having a problem with iTunes where syncing my iPhone ends up seeming to basically finish, but it says "Waiting for items to copy" after everything else, and just stays there for... well, a very long time, if I let it. Oh, and I'm not sure this is always the case, but at the moment, it's doing this while "Syncing Genius Data to [my iPhone] (Step 8 of 8)". If I click the little x in iTunes, it then gets stuck on "Canceling sync", for an equally indefinite sort of period. If I simply unplug the phone, everything seems to be synced and happy, but the next time I sync, it happens again. I presume this is a bug of some sort on Apple's part, but it seems like people have found workarounds... I'm just having trouble tracking one down that (a) is well described enough that I can actually follow it, (b) has enough detail that I can do it without losing data (i.e. tells me pathnames that I might want to copy first, or the like, before telling me to remove something) (note: see also point (a) -- I can't remove it if it's telling me to remove something that I don't know where it is!), and (c) otherwise seems sane. I'm hoping that here perhaps I'll get better luck -- with either a workaround, and/or debugging tips for figuring out how to find myself a workaround. Note: I'm busy with some other things at the moment, but can try to add some additional information later, if necessary.

  • Using virt-install to mount multiple cdrom drives/images

    I would like to create a windows xp guest from the windows xp upgrade cd I have, along with one of a few full versions I have around. However, when I reach the stage in the installer where I am prompted to insert a full version cd, the installer can't find it, i.e.: Setup could not read the CD you inserted, or the CD is not a valid Windows CD.. Is there a work-around for this?, my Googling didn't uncover anything. I've tried various combinations of mounting .iso files and specifying disks, such as: $sudo virt-install --accelerate --connect qemu:///system -n xpsp1 -r 2048 --disk ./vm/winxp_sp1.iso,device=cdrom --disk ./vm/windows.qcow2,size=12 --vnc --noautoconsole --os-type windows --os-variant winxp --vcpus 2 -c /dev/cdrom --check-cpu If I try to specify multiple cdrom drives, I receive an error: virt-install --accelerate --connect qemu:///system -n xpsp1 -r 2048 --disk ./vm/winxp_sp1.iso,device=cdrom --disk /dev/cdrom,device=cdrom --disk ./vm/windows.qcow2,size=12 --vnc --noautoconsole --os-type windows --os-variant winxp --vcpus 2 --check-cpu Starting install...   • Self-powered USB hub and power supply adapter ampere capacity

    I am looking for a power supply adapter for my USB Hub so it can support at least 2 bus-powered external hard drives. The hub's rating is 5 volts, 2 amperes. I would like to know if it would be OK to buy a power supply adapter rated at less than 2A. I've been looking for power supply adapters and the ones that do support 2A are more expensive (more expensive than the USB hub itself) compared to those that support less than 2A. Will power supply adapter that supports less than 2A (~1-1.5A) work fine to support two external hard drives? The external hard drives are both bus-powered Western Digital My Passport Essentials 250 GB. The OS is Windows XP SP3.
