  • Win7 - Some pinned program's icons are corrupt, show default

    I have both FF 3.6 & Chrome pinned to my taskbar in win7. The icons for these two programs show up as the ugly default icon from yesteryear. Strange. Is there some way to force an icon refresh for pinned programs? When I first added them they showed properly, but several days later they reverted to this state Un-pinning the program causes the icon to show up properly, and re-pinning it causes it to break again. These other proggies show up fine: Media Center, Media Player Classic HC, Hulu Desktop, WMP, and the folders. I have 2 user accounts on this box, and both are showing this behavior. I have tried changing the taskbar icon size to 'small' and back, but to no effect. Edit (Add) The icons show up as broken in the start menu too, but I can navigate to the EXE directly. When I click "change icon" in the properties for the start menu entry I get the error : Can not find %ProgramFiles%\Google\Chrome...\chrome.exe.

  • Firefox not displaying icons in KhanAcademy

    If you don't know what Khan Academy is, check it out. It's awesome. (For testing purpose you may view any video on the website.) My problem -- it's a minor problem, but annoying -- is that in Firefox (Windows 7), the icons below the video are shown as boxes with hex codes in them. This means the icons come from some font that isn't getting downloaded by Firefox. How it appears on Chrome (Windows 7), Safari (Mac OS X) and Stainless (Mac OS X): I checked out the source and found that the font in question is called "FontAwesome". I found this question in S.O. that may explain why this happens -- the CSS does use single quotes to enclose the font's src location. However I don't have any write access to Khan Academy servers so I can't modify the actual website. I want to know if this can be fixed in Firefox, and how. I can run Greasemonkey scripts if that would help. Also, would manually downloading the font and adding it to Windows' Fonts folder help? I tried this with the TTF font, and it does not help.   • OS X Application icons missing after filesystem tampering

    A while back I installed some Google software, I forget what it was, but it was something that attached itself to Google Chrome and was un-uninstallable short of uninstalling all of Chrome. It was a total pain in the a$$. Anyways, I was trying to put up a fight before going nuclear and just wiping Chrome, and during that fight, something went wrong (i.e., I didn't know what I was doing). I remember messing around with the Applications folder somehow. I don't remember what exactly I did, but it perhaps involved some interchanging between the /Applications and /User/Username/Applications folders? Definitely some tampering in those areas, I'm sure at least about that. Anyways, I've since updated and restarted my computer. Now, while all my apps work fine, many of them have blank icons - not on the Dock, those icons are fine, but in Spotlight search results, etc. Currently, my /Applications folder contains only OS X-cooked-in applications. My ~/Applications folder contains cooked in apps AND post-OS/third-party apps. There hasn't been any functionality deficit so far, but I don't like working on a machine where something isn't how it should be. I know my information was vague, but does anyone know what went wrong / how to fix it? OS X Mavericks 10.9.3

  • Shell replacement for kiosk environment with desktop icons

    I have to deploy around 80 touch-screen terminals for my company. We're going to run several Windows applications on those terminals and they'll be operated by touch input only. I basically want those machines to run in a kiosk mode, so employees won't be able to launch any programs than the ones they're supposed to (also, this will hide the task bar/start menu, which will give it a much nicer, corporate look). There's usually one app that should automatically launch on startup and other apps that can be launched from the desktop. I've tried to accomplish this (under Windows 7 Pro) with a custom shell replacement. This removes the task bar/start menu like I described earlier. I used an AutoHotKey script for this, because it's easy to, for instance, define hotkeys so admins will still be able to launch stuff like Windows Explorer (okay, I know I could just launch it from the task manager [Ctrl+Shift+Esc] but I'm considering locking that as well). So far so good. Some problems though: No desktop icons. Needed to launch apps from the desktop. No wallpaper. Required for CI. Is there any way around this? I wouldn't mind using another shell replacement, as long as it's reasonably lightweight. I'd love to get the wallpaper and desktop icons to show with something like AutoHotKey though. Thanks!

    I really dislike Ubuntu's default file browser, nautilus, and decided to opt for a lighter alternative (Thunar or Xfe). I've used the following script to change the default to Thunar, but now all my icons are gone from the desktop ! The files are still there, in /home/myid/Desktop, but they do not appear. Is there a way to show them, or is this a consequence of removing nautilus as the default file browser ?   • Strange 'locate' behavior and icon changing

    I'd like to change the icon of a program called Refit with a custom one. This program has various tools and when I try to change those icons all is ok but then I run the following command: $ locate refit.icns and the output is: $ /efi/refind/icons/os_refit.icns The problem is that I don't have any folder called refind and the path simply doesn't exist. I tried it with both: $ ls and $ sudo ls in the /efi directory. So my questions are actually two: how can I change the icon of that program? And why there is this strange behavior with the locate command? I'm on Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Thanks for your help.

  • Can't extract .tar.xz archive on 13.10 because permission denied

    I used to work with Ubuntu 13.04 and also i have installed Vlc 2.1.0 with a .tar.xz archive on that , but after release of 13.10 , i erased 13.04 and installed 13.10 . so i tried to install vlc 2.1.0 with the normal PPA (sudo add-apt-repository ppa:videolan/stable-daily sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install vlc browser-plugin-vlc ) way but it installed vlc 2.0.9 for me , so i 'm remove that and tried to install with the way i have installed it before on 13.04 (wget -c download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/2.1.0/vlc-2.1.0.tar.xz tar -xJvf download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/2.1.0/vlc-2.1.0.tar.xz cd vlc-2.1.0 sudo apt-get build-dep vlc ./configure make sudo make install) , but suddenly an error disturbed me in extracting the .tar.xz file : "Error setting owner : Operation not permitted" , but i the owner of file is me and i changed the all owner settings in file properties to read and write but it don't works ,so what can i do ? and also if it don't work , suggest me a good way to install Vlc 2.1.0 !     I am trying to get the derived position and scaling of a 3D Sprite and set them to a 2D Sprite.   • Pre-set OS X dock icon positions for non-permanent apps?

    Is it possible to have OS X always place certain app icons in specific places (eg. position "two") in the dock, when they're not permanently docked apps? At the moment every non-permanent app is added to the end (far right), but, for example, if I have my mail and todo list apps open, I want them to pop up in positions one and two. I know this can easily be achieved by permanently docking icons, I'm specifically looking for a solution for non-permanent apps. I suspect OS X has no built in facility for this, perhaps there's a 3rd party app or script/command line trick?

  • After upgrade to Windows 8.1, no Skydrive icon in task bar

    I upgraded to 8.1 and now I don't see the SkyDrive icon in the task bar, nor the green light under it indicating the my computer is communicating with SkyDrive. When I go into Control Panel |..|Notification Area Icons, SkyDrive is listed and noted as Up to date. However even though I mark it to Show Icons and Notifications I don't see any icon in the taskbar. Is it supposed to be this way, or do I have a problem? I kind of got used to that little green synchronizing indicator giving me a warm and fuzzy feeling.

    I just got 64 bit Vista system after being on Windows XP. I'm trying to get all my useful programs up to date, and I've recently had a problem extracting files into the 32-bit program files directory (Program Files (x86)). I'm using 7zip to extract the eclipse-SDK-3.5-win32.zip directory into C:\Program Files (x86) Unfortunately, every time I've tried to do this, 7Zip reports can not open output file C:\Program Files (x86)\eclipse\... I've been able to extract it to C:\ and then move it, I'm assuming there's some protection on the Program Files directory that is causing some problems. Any suggestions?

    I am using Visual Studio 2010 and we just decided to get started on localization of our code. We want to use the per-form resource file in combination with a separate resource file for static strings, called strings.resx. I was wondering if there is a good way to extra static strings (we already have quite some code we need to translate) to the strings.resx file? I have tried this plugin: Resource Refactoring 2010, but it doesn't work completely. It creates the correct new resource, but the strings aren't refactored in the code. Also, the tool seems to be abandoned by its developer. Is there a good plugin that can do this?

  • MVC or Extract Service Layer

    we have an application that is built with .Net MVC. We are now tasked with exposing API's to third parties. Members on our team want to just continue down our current path and just use more controllers so we can reuse the backend of our current application. Logic tells me we need to create a seperate service layer when more clients are going to be accessing it, but .Net MVC seems to take care of all of this. Is it really acceptable architecture to use controllers in a stand alone application to expose API's and what would be the potential gains of extracting the service layer out?

  • Why aren't RemoteApp icons showing up

    I have a Windows 2008 R2 server running RDS. I have installed and configured RemoteApp to publish applications with RDS Web Access. When I browse to https://servernname.domain.local/RDWeb I can log in and get to the RemoteApp Programs tab, but there are no icons or apps to click on. I have added a bunch of apps in Remote App manager and they are all enabled for RD Web Access. Also, I am an administrator on the server.

Yesterday I installed AVG 9.0 in my machine and was working fine. But today when I started the system an svchost error occured saying "the memory at location could not be written".   • Explorer is missing half tray icons in XP

    Hi, lately and with no explanation half of the tray icons disappear every time I start up XP SP3. I use Process Explorer (procexp.exe) to look for the missing processes and they still there. When i kill and restart explorer.exe, the tray is complete again. I don't know how to diagnostic or repair the problem. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
