• What you don't like in your web-framework of "choice"?

  Most of the time we don't have a choice were it comes to web-frameworks, in Java every company is using a different one(big thanks to web-framework developers - you will burn in hell). However now I have a choice of picking which framework we will use, I will probably pick the one I know the best since I know how to by-pass its downfalls. In every comparation we will only see what is good in that frameworks and any downfalls will be swept under the carpet. What are the downfalls of most known frameworks?

• Samsung NP305U1A laptop won't resume from suspension

  I just bought a Samsung NP305U1A laptop and installed Ubuntu Desktop 12.04 LTS on it. Whenever I suspend the computer and try to wake it back up, the monitor only shows a black screen and the only thing I can do is a hard reset. Kernel: 3.2.0-24-generic Graphic: Radeon HD 6320 Anybody know what to do? UPDATE I did some some research and remebered that I installed the "ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver" from the "Additional drivers" software bundled in Ubuntu. I also tried to install the "ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver (post-release updates)" but whenever I do, it gives me an error and I can't continue So I decided to make a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04 again and when i tried the suspension out-of-the-box, it did work. But since I can't install the drivers I need, HD video is choppy like hell. So perhaps the suspension bug was fixed in the post-release updates of the driver, but sadly I cannot install them, and I don't know why.

  Arriving at JFK, at dawn, is beautiful. From above 1,000ft I can see no crime, poverty or ugliness – just the dark orange sunrise-through-smog. The Atlantic appears calm, and I take that as a good sign. Today is the first day of my software craftsmanship tour. I will be visiting three of the shining lights of the software industry over five days, exchanging ideas and learning. Arriving on the red eye from Seattle I feel like hell. My lips, not used to the dry air, are cracked and bleeding. I get changed in the JFK restroom and make my way from the airport. Following Rik’s directions I take the airtrain to Jamaica. Rik is an engineering manager at Didit in Long Island, the first stop on my tour. From Jamaica I take the Long Island Rail Road train to Rockville Centre, home of Didit.

• How do I make Powertop changes permanent?

  I'm on a Compaq 615 and it's fan is loud as hell. Not much you can do about that but I'm trying to keep the CPU/GPU as cool as possible. This is what Powertop has to say: If I change all of them to "good", the changes don't survive a reboot. • tail stops displaying in case of a log rotation

  I have to tail the log of a server (servicemix) and the log rotation is enabled. As soon as the rotation happens, tail stops displaying. I did some investigations and it is a bug in Debian : Debian Bug Report. The bug has been around for a long time ago. Does anyone knows if this bug in Ubuntu is to be fixed? I'm on Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit. I don't have to mention that this bug is total hell! Every time I have the problem, I have to interrupt the command tail and re-execute the command!

I've worked at four companies so far, and I've noticed a lack of attention to keeping code clean and dealing with technical debt that hinders future progress in a software app. For example, the first company I worked for had written a database from scratch rather than take something like MySQL and that created hell for the team when refacoring or extending the app. I've always tried to be honest and clear with my manager when he discusses projections, but management doesn't seem interested in fixing what's already there and it's horrible to see the impact it has on team morale and in their attitude towards others. What are your thoughts on the best way to tackle this problem? What I've seen is people packing up and leaving and the company becomes a revolving door with developers coming and and out and making the code worse. How do you communicate this to management to get them interested in sorting out technical debt?

• Fastest bit-blit in C# ?

  I know there is Unity, and XNA that both use C#, but I am don't know what else I could use. The reason I say C# is that the syntax and style is similar to AS3, which I am familiar with, and I want to choose the correct framework to start learning with. What should I use to be able to do the most possible bit-blit(direct pixel copy) objects per frame. EDIT: I should not need to add this, but I am looking for the most possible amount of objects per frame because I am making a few Bullet-Hell SHMUPS. I need thousands and thousands of bullets, particles, and hundreds of enemies on the screen at once. I am looking for a solution to do as many bit-blit operations per frame, I am not looking for a general purpose engine. EDIT2: I want bit-blitting because I do not want to exclude people who have lower end video cards but a fast processor from playing my games.

• Which Programming Languages Support the Following Features?

  My personal programming background is mainly in Java, with a little bit of Ruby, a tiny bit of Scheme, and most recently, due to some iOS development, Objective-C. In my move from Java to Objective-C I've really come to love some features that Objective-C has that Java doesn't. These include support for both static and dynamic typing, functional programming, and closures, which I'm trying to leverage in my code more often. Unfortunately there are trade-offs, including lack of support for generics and (on iOS at least) no garbage collection. These contrasts have lead me to start a search for some of the programming languages that support the following features: Object Oriented Functional Programming Support Closures Generics Support for both Static and Dynamic Typing Module Management to avoid classpath/dll hell Garbage Collection Available Decent IDE Support Admittedly some of these features(IDE support, Module Management) may not be specific to the language itself, but obviously influence the ease of development in the language. • Best way to handle realtime melee AI in authoritative network environment

  So i've been working on a multiplayer game for a bit; it's a co-op action RPG with real-time combat. If you've seen or played TERA, I'd say it's comparable to that, but not an MMO, heh. I'm currently handling the AI units authoritatively, the server calculates their pathing, movement, and pursue/attack logic, and syncs the movement to the clients 15x per second, and the state changes when they happen. When I emulate 200ms ping, though, the client can perceive being out of range to an AI's attack, but still take the hit, because on the server he hadn't moved that far yet. This also plays hell with my real-time blocking. I don't really want to allow the clients to be allowed to say "that was out of range" or "I blocked that", but I'm not really sure how else to handle it.

That it is a long time associate and friend of the team we have all grown to know and love, I feel much better about the move. Who cares, Chris, you haven't blogged religiously in ages! • Game has noticeable frame drops but when through a profiler it always runs smooth

  I'm trying to optimize my PC game but I can find the bottleneck since every time I run it through a profiler (gDEBugger) it runs smooths. When running outside gDEBugger I get these annoying hiccups. It's not just the graphics, the sound also gets choppy. The drops are inconsistent across runs, i.e, sometimes I run the same scenario and get no drops at all, sometimes I get a few drops, and others the game is consistently slow. The only constant is: when running through gDEBugger I ALWAYS get a smooth run. I'm suspecting something outside my game is interfering and causing these drops, but what in the hell does gDEBugger do that nullifies these drops? A higher process priority? Any ideas?   I never know where it's acceptable to post something like this, so please forgive if it's in the wrong place. I'm very interested in going further in to web development; I know a bit of javascript, a bit of php, and so forth, but I'm now seeing these services that will go from psd to wordpress for 200 bucks and I'm wondering how the hell is anyone able to compete with this? So I'm wondering if those more knowledgeable than me could tell me what areas are the least likely to be able to be outsourced, for 5 bucks to some kid in Uzbekistan( no offense to that kid).. do you think it's on the database management side, or maybe app development? ideas appreciated.

But as we go through our usual dev cycles, we create these ApplicationIDs. Hell Visual Studio will create them for us, to make things easy!The problem is, many a developer, and some a ITOgre, may leave these AppPrincipalIds sitting there and not clean them up when they are done playing. You can look for currently registered App Principals at https://yourtenant/_layouts/15/appprincipals.aspx The problem is, that URL shows you App Principals registered AND currently in use. Currently NOT in use App Principals are NOT shown on that page. The same issue applies on premises also, even though here I am talking specifically about Office 365. • over reporting in google analytics - social media stats

  I have a client and their traffic from social media reads thus: 80% from facebook 1% from Twitter This suggestsd they are not exploiting twitter at all and this was in my presentation but my boss took it out claiming twitter stats are under reported in google analytics. I can't substantiate this claim and wonder where she got this idea from. Can anyone shed light on this? Are my stats wrong and should I disregard these figures? but 80-1 seems like one hell of an under report! thanks c

• Remove Ubuntu 11.10 from Dual Boot Windows XP without XP CD?

  I installed Ubuntu on a old Windows XP computer using Dual Boot, i have no XP Cd and desperately need to remove it! EasyBCD does not work on windows XP, iF I just delete the Ubuntu partition all hell breaks loose and i have to reinstall ubuntu to get my XP back. Please help me i am only 12 and i have made a stupid error on my mum and dads computer and will get into serious trouble if i dont fix it soon!. Extra Information: I use the gnu boot loader to choose my operating system, but my mum and dad need my help to open a word document, they have only just grasped double clicking! I installed it off a cd that i made, the computer is 64-bit AMD Athlon with one 160gb hard drive, 512mb ram and a Sis mirage2 128mb shared video card. Its a COMPAQ presario.

• Unwanted application icons showing on unity taskbar

  I installed my Ubuntu 12.04 desktop after a dependency loop hell. After I re-installed the Unity panel shows all application icons whenever the app is loaded. For example I can now always see VMware and X-Chat where on every previous install these icons never showed no matter how much I wanted them too sometimes. These indicators are starting to fill up my taskbar and was wondering how to make them go away. For example I want Thunderbird, Empathy and X-Chat to be able to be closed to the messaging menu like they did in all my other previous installs. Also I have X-Chat indicator installed but it will not allow me to close to messaging menu - I have to have the indicator icon enabled in order to close it. Any assistance in these issues would be greatly appreciated.

• Looking for the better way to combine deep architecture refactoring with feature based development

  Problem statement: Given: TFS as Source Control Heavy desktop client application with tons of legacy code with bad or almost absent architecture design. Clients constantly requiring new features with sound quality, fast delivery and constantly complaining on user unfriendly UI. Problem: Application undoubtedly requires deep refactoring. This process inevitably makes application unstable and dedicated stabilization phase is needed. We've tried: Refactoring in master with periodical merges from master (MB) to feature branch (FB). (my mistake) Result: Many unstable branches. What we are advised: Create additional branch for refactoring (RB) periodically synchronizing it with MB via merge from MB to RB. After RB is stabilized we substitute master with RB and create new branch for further refactoring. This is the plan. But here I expect the real hell of merging MB to RB after merging any FB to MB. The main advantage: Stable master most of the time. Are there any better alternatives to the procees?

• Grid based collision - How many cells?

  The game I'm creating is a bullet hell game, so there can be quite a few objects on the screen at any given time. It probably maxes out at about 40 enemies and 200 or so bullets. That being said, I'm splitting up the playing field into a grid for my collision checking. Right now, it's only 8 cells. How many would be optimal? I'm worried that if I use too many, I'll be wasting CPU power. My main concern is processing power, to make the game run smoothly. RAM is not a big concern for me.

• Comments in code

  It is a good practice to leave comments in your code.  Knowing what the hell you were thinking or later intending can be salvation for yourself or the poor soul coming behind you.  Comments can leave clues to why you chose one approach over the other.  Perhaps staged re-engineering dictated that coding practices vary.One thing that should not be left in code as comments is old code.  There are many free tools that left you version your code.  Subversion is a great tool when used with TortoiseSVN.  Leaving commented code scattered all over will cause you to second guess yourself, all distraction to the real code, and is just bad practice.If you have a versioning solution, take time to go back through your code and clean things up.  You may find that you can remove lines and leave real comments that are far more knowledgeable than having to remember why you commented out the old code in the first place.

• What diagrams, other than the class diagram and the workflow diagram, are useful for explaining how an application works?

  I am working on a small Delphi project, composed of two units. One unit is for the GUI, and the other for data management, file parsing, list iterating and so on.. I've already made a class diagram, and my workflow looks like hell- it's too complex, even for anyone to read. I've considered making a dataflow diagram, but it would be even more complex. A use case diagram wouldn't be of use either. Am I missing some diagram type which could somehow represent the relationship between my two units?
