  • Fleximage gem on Ruby 1.9

    Running a Rails application with Fleximage in Ruby 1.8.7 works fine, but in Ruby 1.9 returned error: /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/fleximage-1.0.4/lib/fleximage/model.rb:340: [BUG] Segmentation fault ruby 1.9.1p376 (2009-12-07 revision 26041) [i386-darwin10.0.0] -- control frame ---------- c:0060 p:---- s:0295 b:0295 l:000294 d:000294 CFUNC :read c:0059 p:0060 s:0291 b:0291 l:000290 d:000290 METHOD /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/fleximage-1.0.4/lib/fleximage/model.rb:340 c:0058 p:0084 s:0285 b:0285 l:000275 d:000284 BLOCK /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/base.rb:2746 c:0057 p:---- s:0281 b:0281 l:000280 d:000280 FINISH c:0056 p:---- s:0279 b:0279 l:000278 d:000278 CFUNC :each And further very long line of error. My fleximage is stored as gem, keeping it as plugin returning a different set of errors so I don't bother. How to fix this?

  • Faye private pub web sockets Errno::ECONNREFUSED: Connection refused - connect(2)

  • Rails 3 Flash Uploader

    - by klynch
I am trying to get Uploadify working with Rails 3. However, I can't insert the middleware with the correct arguments. This is the Rails 2 way: ActionController::Dispatcher.middleware.insert_before( ActionController::Session::CookieStore, FlashSessionCookieMiddleware, ActionController::Base.session_options[:key] ) This is what I have so far for Rails 3: Rails.application.config.middleware.insert_before( Rails.application.config.session_store, FlashSessionCookieMiddleware, Rails.application.config.session_options[:key] ) However, this gives: kevin$hephaestus:$exposure [1035 | 0]% rake middleware (in /Users/kevin/Projects/exposure) rake aborted! protected method `session_options' called for #<Rails::Application::Configuration:0x101eb28d0> (See full trace by running task with --trace) zsh: exit 1 rake middleware When I comment out the session_options argument, the middleware is successfully inserted, but it can't do what it is supposed to. Any suggestions?

  • PRoblem with converting form_tag in rails

    - by Gigg
I am new to ruby and rails and I am having a problem from Beggining Ruby on Rails Ecommerce. (Yes, its an old book). I have these 2 code sets for a view: new.html.erb: <%= form_tag :action= 'create' do -% <%= render :partial = 'form' % <%= submit_tag 'Create' % <%= end -% <% link_to 'Back', :action = 'index' % _form.html.erb: <% error_messages_for 'supplier' % First Name Last Name But It wont show although I added the do option. It keeps giving me this error: C:/rails/emporium/app/views/admin/supplier/new.html.erb:1: syntax error, unexpected ')' ...orm_tag :action= 'create' do ).to_s) ... ^ C:/rails/emporium/app/views/admin/supplier/new.html.erb:4: syntax error, unexpected keyword_end ; @output_buffer.concat(( end ).to_s) ^ C:/rails/emporium/app/views/admin/supplier/new.html.erb:5: syntax error, unexpected tIVAR, expecting ')' @output_buffer.concat "\n" ^ C:/rails/emporium/app/views/admin/supplier/new.html.erb:7: syntax error, unexpected keyword_ensure, expecting keyword_end C:/rails/emporium/app/views/admin/supplier/new.html.erb:9: syntax error, unexpected $end, expecting ')' Can anyone suggest how I fix this since I have not fould a google answer yet. • A copy of ApplicationController has been removed from the module tree but is still active

    - by Matchu
Whenever two concurrent HTTP requests go to my Rails app, the second always returns the following error: A copy of ApplicationController has been removed from the module tree but is still active! From there it gives an unhelpful stack trace to the effect of "we went through the standard server stuff, ran your first before_filter on ApplicationController (and I checked; it's just whichever filter runs first)", then offers the following: /home/matchu/rails/torch/vendor/rails/activesupport/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:414:in `load_missing_constant' /home/matchu/rails/torch/vendor/rails/activesupport/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:96:in `const_missing' which I'm assuming is a generic response and doesn't really say much. Google seems to tell me that people developing Rails Engines will encounter this, but I don't do that. All I've done is upgrade my Rails app from 2.2 (2.1?) to 2.3. What are some possible causes for this error, and how can I go about tracking down what's really going on? I know this question is vague, so would any other information be helpful? More importantly: I tried doing a test run in a "production" environment just now, and the error doesn't seem to persist. Does this only affect development, then, and need I not worry too much?

  • Ruby Passeger + Nginx or lighthttpi + fgci for shared hosting

    - by devnull
    I have set up a passenger + nginx setup and I plan to offer a free non-commercial hosting (or in fact on the fly deployment) for rack-based frameworks (e.g. camping, sinatra). I am facing an "issue" with passenger. For each application you need to configure nginx.conf (it would be the same with apache so it is not an nginx issue) with: server { ... passenger_base_uri /app1; passenger_base_uri /app2; passenger_base_uri /app3; } Now this is not inherently bad as, in theory, I could allow a user to run just one app on his webspace but even in this case I need to create a new server directory on nginx e.g. (user.domain.com). As this will mainly be used to deploy apps the behavior I am looking at is more the possibility to auto map several apps (e.g. app1, app2, app3, app4) under the same server (your app.com/app1 yourapp.com/app2) without having to update the nginx or apache file each time. This seems to be a limitation in passenger. As such I am thinking about an alternative with lighttpd and fastcgi. Would this allow immediate deployment without touching the lighttpd config file e.g. I create a new directory with app2 and it will run immediately ? What is your experience in performance difference between passenger + nginx vs. lighttpd + fastcgi ? thanks in advance scenario details: on nginx + passenger - user cannot add a new sub-folder and run another sinatra/camping app without declaring the path on nginx.conf and restarting the server; wished behavior with the new setup: - user can add a new folder with a new app and it would run on lighttpd+fcgi without any extra configuration of the web server;

  • Creating block devices for openstack deployment using MAAS and juju (nova-volume deployment)

    - by Tom Van Hoof
Hi, I'm currently trying to get a openstack deployment working by using MAAS with 9 nodes and juju. To do this I found this guide, working with ubuntu 12.04 LTS https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuCloudInfrastructure and followed it as good as I can. After a vigorous amount of trial and error I finally got to the point where I'm supposed to deploy nova-volume using the "custom" config file. However when my node is started and shows up as running in the "juju status" report the service reports the installation failed. I'm trying to install with juju jitsu by the way. I think it has something to do with the following statement in the openstack.cfg file : nova-volume: # This must be a free block device that is writable on the nova-volume host. block-device: "xvdb" overwrite: "true" I did some research and found that (at least I think) this refers to a Xen Virtual Drive/device, and because the device is not present on the node it's being deployed to, the installation fails. What I don't understand is how I am supposed to have such a block device available on a machine which was completely managed by MAAS. Does anyone here have any experience with this and knows of a way to solve this, or am I missing something big here. Some kind of missing link between the MAAS and a separate XEN host ? My MAAS server is ubuntu 12.04LTS Server. All help is welcome. Kind regards, Tom

  • How to build an API on top of an existing Rails app with NodeJs and what architecture to use?

    - by javiayala
The explanation I was recently hired by a company that has an old RoR 2.3 application with more than 100k users, a strong SEO strategy with more than 170k indexed urls, native android and ios applications and other custom-made mobile and web applications that rely on a not so good API from the same RoR app. They recently merged with a company from another country as an strategy to grow the business and the profit. They have almost the same stats, a similar strategy and mobile apps. We have just decided that we need to merge the data from both companies and to start a new app from scratch since the RoR app is to old and heavily patched and the app from the other company was built with a custom PHP framework without any documentation. The only good news is that both databases are in MySQL and have a similar structure. The challenge I need to build a new version that: can handle a lot of traffic, preserves the SEO strategies of both companies, serve 2 different domains, and have a strong API that can support legacy mobile apps from both companies and be ready for a new set of native apps. I want to use RoR 3.2 for the main web apps and NodeJs with a Restful API. I know that I need to be very careful with the mobile apps and handle multiple versions of the API. I also think that I need to create a service that can handle a lot IO request since the apps is heavily used to create orders for restaurants at a certain time of the day. The questions With all this in mind: What type of architecture do you recommend me to follow? What gems or node packages do you think will work the best? How do I build a new rails app and keep using the same database structure? Should I use NodeJS to build an API or just build a new service with Ruby? I know that I'm asking to much from you guys, but please help me by answering any topic that you can or by pointing me on the right direction. All your comments and feedback will be extremely appreciated! Thanks!

  • Calling another ruby script from a ruby script

    - by Andrew Grimm
In ruby, is it possible to specify to call another ruby script using the same ruby interpreter as the original script is being run by? For example, if a.rb runs b.rb a couple of times, is it possible to replace system("ruby", "b.rb", "foo", "bar") with something like run_ruby("b.rb", "foo", "bar") so that if you used ruby1.9.1 a.rb on the original, ruby1.9.1 would be used on b.rb, but if you just used ruby a.rb on the original, ruby would be used on b.rb? I'd prefer not to use shebangs, as I'd like it to be able to run on different computers, some of which don't have /usr/bin/env.

  • Run command in command prompt from Ruby application

    - by Julian
I have a command-line Ruby application that uses Curses to create a GUI. This GUI is absolutely mangled by Windows' command prompt if the command prompt window is too small. The command prompt window can be resized in properties. However, I want to resize it programatically. Running this command in the command prompt (nothing to do with Ruby) will resize the command prompt window to desired variables. mode con:cols=120 lines=40 Can I do this purely in Ruby? Or, failing that (I suspect doing it purely in Ruby may be impossible) can my ruby application actually run that command and 'hit enter', and resize window it's running in?

  • Worthwhile to upgrade my Ruby Pickaxe book?

    - by ewindisch
I have Programming Ruby, The Pragmatic Programmers' Guide, Second Edition which covers Ruby 1.8. It has been several years since I have programmed in Ruby, but I'd like to refresh my memory and bring my knowledge current. With most programming languages, I've found that I can skip books that only concern a single version bump. Yet, Ruby is a young language and I understand there may have been significant changes in 1.9. Although I already have the second edition, is it worthwhile to buy the third edition for Ruby 1.9? Are the differences that vast, or will it be simple enough to catch up to 1.9 with the online docs?

  • How to get decent MySQL driver perfomance in Ruby

    - by Zombies
I notice that I am getting very poor performance for either or both inserts and queries. The queries themselves are basic and can execute with no delay directly from mysql. The ruby script that I wrote is only 1 thread, so only 1 connection is being used, and never closed unless the script is terminated. Pretty basic, I am just trying to insert a lot of rows. There is a look-up or two to get a surrogate key, or to check for duplicates, but the complexity is just O(n). Also, it isn't like there are millions of records, so again the queries themselves take no time to run. I am using: Ruby 1.9.1 Gem/driver:ruby-mysql 2.9.2 MySQL 5.1.37-1ubuntu5.1 ^ all 32 bit versions on a 32bit ubuntu distro I am getting about 1-2 inserts per second, pretty slow. I know a lot of people will suggest to change drivers, but that means I have some refactoring and resting to do. So I would really appreciate any help, but please if you do recomend that at least say why you do (eg: if you have used ruby-mysql x.x.x before and found another mysql driver to be better).ruby-mysql 2.9.2 What I would like to know: How can I improve performance with ruby-mysql 2.9.2 If and only if I cannot do this with ruby-mysql 2.9.2, what should I do?

  • Migrating Ruby Site from EngineYard to Heroku

    - by user410925
As part of a larger project I've been tasked with migrating some existing Ruby on Rails sites (built with an old version of refinerycms 0.9.6.34, at least that's the version listed in the Gemfile included with the source). I don't normally work with Ruby so I'm at a bit of a loss. The previous developers simply handed over the latest git dump as well as a db dump. I'm working first with trying to get the site up working locally on an Ubuntu 11.10 local machine before pushing up to at test Heroku install. If it's possible to just push directly to Heroku with the files they gave, then I can try that, but it's my understanding I need to get everything working and then use Heroku's tools to deploy. The previous devs said they're using ruby 1.8.7 so in Ubuntu I've done the following: aptitude install ruby1.8 ruby1.8-dev ruby1.8-full aptitude install rubygems1.8 I've restored the database and in the config directory I've made changes to the database.yml to point to the restored database. When I try and run "bundle install" from the root of the extracted source dir I get: Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/mail-2.4.4.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2012-03-14 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/tilt-1.3.3.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2011-08-25 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/mime-types-1.18.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2012-03-21 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/sass-rails-3.2.5.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2012-03-19 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/jquery-rails-2.0.2.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2012-04-03 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/mail-2.4.4.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2012-03-14 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/tilt-1.3.3.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2011-08-25 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/mime-types-1.18.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2012-03-21 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/sass-rails-3.2.5.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2012-03-19 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/jquery-rails-2.0.2.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2012-04-03 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/mail-2.4.4.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2012-03-14 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/tilt-1.3.3.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2011-08-25 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/mime-types-1.18.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2012-03-21 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/sass-rails-3.2.5.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2012-03-19 00:00:00.000000000Z" Invalid gemspec in [/var/lib/gems/1.8/specifications/jquery-rails-2.0.2.gemspec]: invalid date format in specification: "2012-04-03 00:00:00.000000000Z" Fetching gem metadata from https://rubygems.org/....... • Installing Rails 3 - /usr/local/bin/rails: No such file or directory

    - by viatropos
I just ran these two commands: sudo gem install rails --pre sudo gem install railties --pre Now when I run rails myapp, I get this: -bash: /usr/local/bin/rails: No such file or directory Here's some system info: $ ruby -v ruby 1.8.7 (2009-06-12 patchlevel 174) [i686-darwin9.7.0] $ sudo gem update --system Updating RubyGems Nothing to update I tried copy/pasting the bin/rails file into /usr/local/bin/rails, and changing permissions to sudo chmod 755 /usr/local/bin/rails, but that doesn't work. Any ideas how to get up and running?

  • memory tuning with rails/unicorn running on ubuntu

    - by user970193
I am running unicorn on Ubuntu 11, Rails 3.0, and Ruby 1.8.7. It is an 8 core ec2 box, and I am running 15 workers. CPU never seems to get pinned, and I seem to be handling requests pretty nicely. My question concerns memory usage, and what concerns I should have with what I am seeing. (if any) Here is the scenario: Under constant load (about 15 reqs/sec coming in from nginx), over the course of an hour, each server in the 3 server cluster loses about 100MB / hour. This is a linear slope for about 6 hours, then it appears to level out, but still maybe appear to lose about 10MB/hour. If I drop my page caches using the linux command echo 1 /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches, the available free memory shoots back up to what it was when I started the unicorns, and the memory loss pattern begins again over the hours. Before: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 7130244 5005376 2124868 0 113628 422856 -/+ buffers/cache: 4468892 2661352 Swap: 33554428 0 33554428 After: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 7130244 4467144 2663100 0 228 11172 -/+ buffers/cache: 4455744 2674500 Swap: 33554428 0 33554428 My Ruby code does use memoizations and I'm assuming Ruby/Rails/Unicorn is keeping its own caches... what I'm wondering is should I be worried about this behaviour? FWIW, my Unicorn config: worker_processes 15 listen "#{CAPISTRANO_ROOT}/shared/pids/unicorn_socket", :backlog = 1024 listen 8080, :tcp_nopush = true timeout 180 pid "#{CAPISTRANO_ROOT}/shared/pids/unicorn.pid" GC.respond_to?(:copy_on_write_friendly=) and GC.copy_on_write_friendly = true before_fork do |server, worker| STDERR.puts "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX BEFORE FORK" print_gemfile_location defined?(ActiveRecord::Base) and ActiveRecord::Base.connection.disconnect! defined?(Resque) and Resque.redis.client.disconnect old_pid = "#{CAPISTRANO_ROOT}/shared/pids/unicorn.pid.oldbin" if File.exists?(old_pid) && server.pid != old_pid begin Process.kill("QUIT", File.read(old_pid).to_i) rescue Errno::ENOENT, Errno::ESRCH # already killed end end File.open("#{CAPISTRANO_ROOT}/shared/pids/unicorn.pid.ok", "w"){|f| f.print($$.to_s)} end after_fork do |server, worker| defined?(ActiveRecord::Base) and ActiveRecord::Base.establish_connection defined?(Resque) and Resque.redis.client.connect end Is there a need to experiment enforcing more stringent garbage collection using OobGC (http://unicorn.bogomips.org/Unicorn/OobGC.html)? Or is this just normal behaviour, and when/as the system needs more memory, it will empty the caches by itself, without me manually running that cache command? Basically, is this normal, expected behaviour? tia

  • Why’s (Poignant) Guide to Ruby

    - by Ben Griswold
You’re familiar with O’Reilly’s brilliant Head First Series, right?  Great.  Then you know how every book begins with an explanation of the Head First teaching style and you know the teaching format which Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates developed is based on research in cognitive science, neurobiology and educational psychology and it’s all about making learning visual and conversational and attractive and emotional and it’s highly effective.  Anyway, it’s a great series and you should read every last one of the books. Moving on… I’ve been wanting to learn more about Ruby and Why’s (Poignant) Guide to Ruby has been on my reading list for a while and there was talk about cartoon foxes and other silliness and I figured Why’s (Poignant) Guide to Ruby probably takes the same unorthodox teaching style as the Head First books – and that’s great – so I read the book, in piecemeal, over the last couple of weeks and, well, I figured wrong. Now having read the book, here’s my take on Why’s (Poignant) Guide – it’s very creative and clever and it does a darn good job of introducing one to Ruby.  If you’re interested in Ruby or simply interested, the online book is worth your time.  If you’re thinking (like me) that cartoon foxes will be doing the teaching, that’s simple not the case.  However, the cartoons and the random stories in the sidebar may serve a purpose. Unlike the Head First books where images and captions are used to further explain the teachings, the cartoons and stories in Why’s Guide serve as intermission and offer your brain a brief moment of rest before the next Ruby concept is explained.  It’s not a bad strategy, but definitely not as effective as the Head First techniques.

  • Should a Python programmer learn Ruby?

    - by C J
Hi! I have been a Python programmer for around 1.5 years (one internship + side projects), so I am comfortable with the language. Given that everyone is talking about Ruby these days, and I mean seriously! No one bothers about Python (from what I've seen). See GitHub. All RoR. I apply for a job and they ask me about RoR. I look at the screencasts on peepcode.com and they are in Ruby. gitimmersion.com has all the tutorial in Ruby! I know this is pretty vague, but still... why Ruby! Everyone these days is obssessed with RoR! Why not Python? Anyways, my questions are: Should I learn Ruby? Is learning Ruby when knowing Python be, er, complicated for me? Or is it going to be just like learning any other language? Thanks!

  • The speed of Ruby and Java.

    - by Simon
In every benchmark that I found on the web it seems that Ruby is slow, much slower than Java. The Ruby folks just state that it doesn't matter. Could you give me any example that the speed of Ruby on Rails (and the Ruby itself) really doesn't matter?

  • Conflicting ruby versions

    - by DavidP6
I am having problems with conflicting versions of Ruby that I have installed. I had 1.8.6 and then installed 1.8.7 and it has caused problems. I get the following error when trying to run my ruby on rails app: /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.8/i686-linux/rbconfig.rb:7: ruby lib version (1.8.6) doesn't match executable version (1.8.7) (RuntimeError) I would like to remove 1.8.7 somehow and just use 1.8.6 but have no idea how to go about doing this.
