• What's a good unit test framework for Common Lisp projects?

  I need to write a unit test suite for a project I am developing in my spare time. Being a CL newbie I was overwhelmed by the amount of choices for a CL implementation, I spent quite some time to choose one. Now I am facing exactly the same thing with unit test frameworks. A quick glance at http://www.cliki.net/test%20framework shows 20 unit test frameworks! Choice is good but for a novice like me this can be a bit confusing and given the number of frameworks it would be painful to try them all. I would like to use a framework which: Is reasonably well maintained Easy to use but with some degree of flexibility Offers some sort of integration with Emacs (or it is possible to easily integrate it with Emacs) Integration with git post-commit hooks Integration with a continous integration system (such as buildbot) What are your experiences in this field?

• Fastest way to compress a database or .bak file and transfer it

  As per the question title. I wonder if there are special programmes or commands that makes zipping up a .bak file and transferring it super quick. I read abour xp_cmdshell here but I'm not sure about the speed. My .bak file is about 12 gigs at the moment. Related to this is the possibility of using Red Gate's SQL Data Compare to just transfer the differential data across the network pipeline but I have never used SQL Data Compare before and I'm not sure how it goes about doing INSERTS on tables with Primary Keys and such. Also, not sure about the speed. Does anyone have any experience with this programme or similar programmes? Cheers!

• Problem with ranking of search results in SharePoint 2007 if using the CONTAINS predicate

  While writing a front-end for the SharePoint Search web service for work, I did some quick testing with the MOSS Search Tool to make sure things were working right under the hood. What I found was that queries composed only of CONTAINS predicates (FREETEXT ones were fine) would have a rank of 1000 for any results that were returned. According to the documentation (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms544086.aspx): "If the query returns a document because a non–full-text predicate evaluates to TRUE for that document, the rank value is calculated as 1000." Given that the behaviour I am seeing seems to contradict the documentation, is it the case that all queries that use only the CONTAINS predicate will produce ranking like this?

• Large number of Google Map Markers and IE6?

  I'm working on an application that generates a large number of Google Map markers (2000 - 7000) via JSON. I'm also using MarkerCluster. It works quick on Chrome and FF but IE6 takes few minutes and just crashes the first time I try to zoom in. I'm not doing any more than just adding the markers to a map using JQuery & GMap API. So I looked at the following URL of the regular Google Map. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&q=hotel&sll=53.182996,-2.581787&sspn=1.494529,4.927368&ie=UTF8&split=1&rq=1&ev=p&hq=hotel&hnear=&ll=53.123702,-2.730103&spn=1.496594,4.927368&t=h&z=8 It shows a lot of tiny markers (~1000) and works fine on IE6. Do you have any ideas why this works and the markers added via the API struggles? Thanks

• Replacing a colour/colours in a movieclip with different colours?

  I am trying to take a movieclip of a character and change the colour of their clothes. The character is comprised of vectors. So far I have semi-sucessfully used this method: stop the movieclip take the bitmap data from the current frame use threshold to replace the colour store the resulting bitmap data in an array add an onenterframe function - clear the current frame and add the bitmap data from the processed data in the array So - this works pretty well. Each frame is only processed once at the beginning and then the write to the movieclip is very quick. However! As the replacement is being performed on a bitmap there is an amount of aliasing that takes place to remove jaggies/pixelation. This produces colours that are not matched using threshold. So the main colour is replaced correctly but it is surrounded by a halo of mixed colours :( I am sure there should be a better way to do this. Any ideas or answers would be greatly apreciated - Thanks.

• How to handle concurrency control in dynamic data?

  I've been quite impressed with dynamic data and how easy and quick it is to get a simple site up and running. I'm planning on using it for a simple internal HR admin site for registering people's skills/degrees/etc. I've been watching the intro videos at www.asp.net/dynamicdata and one thing they never mention is how to handle concurrency control. It seems that DD does not handle it right out of the box (unless there is some setting I haven't seen) as I manually generated a change conflict exception and the app failed without any user friendly message. Anybody know if DD handles it out of the box? Or do you have to somehow build it into the site?

  Hi guys, I have no experience with jquery or javascript for that matter. I am trying to implement this technique to respond to users for errors or messages in general. lights-out-dimmingcovering-background-content-with-jquery This method uses the onclick event and that's not what im after, I have tried to replace .onclick with .load but that doesn't seem to work. I'm after a quick fix as I really don't have the time to learn jquery or its event handlers. The goal is to catch any errors or message's and once these are called the alert box is called without any further actions such as .onclick.   Most software houses I have been at have this attitude about their work. Get it done quick and move on. For programmers I find that the chill time is time that can be used to either improve infrastructure, refactor some old code or learn a new language. I would like to know what your throughts about 'chill time' if its the right attitude at all, and if so what to do with it. Is this sort of chilling helpful for a programmer, what are things you do with your own chill time if you adopt this approach to work.

• Redirecting user from an old web to another in Sharepoint

  Hi all: I want to add the ability to redirect users when they visit certain old sites. The URL of the old sites are unknown, but the server name is the same, e.g. Old site url: http://sharepoint/mySite/default.aspx New site url: http://sharepoint/myNewSite/... There are a lot of other pages within mySite, most of which must be redirected to the new site, but there are exceptions (e.g. user can still view the documents within the site). I thought I have to do this programmatically by somehow capturing the http request and read the url myself. Being no sharepoint guru, I had a quick google, and found that writing a web part is prehaps the best alternative for my situation. But I'm just wondering, given my situation and needs, is writing a web part, or something programmatically, really the ideal solution? Or is there a faster and quicker way to achieve what I want using Sharepoint? Thanks.

• Doing a join across two databases with different collations on SQL Server and getting an error.

  I know, I know with what I wrote in the question I shouldn't be surprised. But my situation is slowly working on an inherited POS system and my predecessor apparently wasn't aware of JOINs so when I looked into one of the internal pages that loads for 60 seconds I see that it's a fairly quick, rewrite these 8 queries as one query with JOINs situation. Problem is that besides not knowing about JOINs he also seems to have had a fetish for multiple databases and surprise, surprise they use different collations. Fact of the matter is we use all "normal" latin characters that English speaking people would consider the entire alphabet and this whole thing will be out of use in a few months so a bandaid is all I need. Long story short is I need some kind of method to cast to a single collation so I can compare two fields from two databases. Exact error is: Cannot resolve the collation conflict between "SQL_Latin1_General_CP850_CI_AI" and "SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS" in the equal to operation.

  Hello, I'm currently dealing with customs messages Beans in Java. After filling in the Beans with different values, I want to produce an EDIFACT CUSDEC message corresponding to each message. For each attribute of a message Bean, I have the information to put the attribute in the right place in EDIFACT CUSEDC format. Thus, I am looking for a free tool (a Java API) which could ideally convert my full-filled Bean into an EDIFACT CUSDEC message.   does anyone know or predict how facebook's iphone app architecture could look like? More specific to what could be built into the app (client) what could be rendered on demand? Do you think the main menu layout of the app (where all the navigation buttons are there) are on the client or being rendered dynamically? Similarly apps like NYTimes or US News, what portion is done on the client and what is rendered dynamically. What could be the best way to render things on-demand. • why is internet explorer displaying my javascript pagination backwards?

  Here's a version of the code I'm using, stripped down to just the parts that aren't working. This is all written to generate some basic pagination with jQuery. In Chrome/Safari/Moz, I generate see spans, 1,2,3,4,...,etc When I look in IE7/8, I see etc,...,4,3,2,1 The string seems to be concatenating backwards!! This seems very strange to me, because there's not a whole lot going on in the code here, I can't figure out which bit could be causing problems. • Need an alternative to two left joins.

  Hey guys quick question, I always use left join, but when I left join twice I always get funny results, usually duplicates. I am currently working on a query that Left Joins twice to retrieve the necessary information needed but I was wondering if it were possible to build another select statement in so then I do not need two left joins or two queries or if there were a better way. For example, if I could select the topic.creator in table.topic first AS something, then I could select that variable in users and left join table.scrusersonline. Thanks in advance for any advice. SELECT * FROM scrusersonline LEFT JOIN users ON users.id = scrusersonline.id LEFT JOIN topic ON users.username = topic.creator WHERE scrusersonline.topic_id = '$topic_id' The whole point of this query is to check if the topic.creator is online by retrieving his name from table.topic and matching his id in table.users, then checking if he is in table.scrusersonline. It produces duplicate entries unfortunately and is thus inaccurate in my mind.

• Jquery SimpleModal flickers in Firefox

  I'm using SimpleModal plugin for Jquery and I have a weird problem with Firefox ( other browsers work fine: Chrome, Safari, Opera, IE). What happens is when I click on the button that launches the modal dialog, before showing the modal (and the fadeIn of the overlay), there is a quick "flicker", less than half a second. (It's longer on my slower PC). Weird thing is, it didn't happen in Firefox 3.5.2, but when I upgraded to 3.6.3, I got the flicker. Any ideas? • Is it valid to have more than one question mark in a URL?

  I came across the following URL today: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/inmarin/detail??blogid=122&entry_id=64497 Notice the doubled question mark at the beginning of the query string: ??blogid=122&entry_id=64497 My browser didn't seem to have any trouble with it, and running a quick bookmarklet: javascript:alert(document.location.search); just gave me the query string shown above. Is this a valid URL? The reason I'm being so pedantic (assuming that I am) is because I need to parse URLs like this for query parameters, and supporting doubled question marks would require some changes to my code. Obviously if they're in the wild, I'll need to support them; I'm mainly curious if it's my fault for not adhering to URL standards exactly, or if it's in fact a non-standard URL.

• Simple XML parsing with Google Picasa API and JQuery

  I'm starting to look into Google's Picasa API for photo data, which provides you with a big XML file with info about albums and photos. Does it have to do with the colon in "gphoto:id", somehow?

• Is there a way to hide annotations in Netbeans or Eclipse?

  Maybe a dumb question, but it would be nice if there was a way to hide or collapse Java annotations when viewing source in Netbeans (or Eclipse). I'm not finding an option and a quick search didn't turn anything up. Is this one of those "you should never want to do that, code folding is a sin!" things? Personally I'd find it useful for annotated entity classes. All the hibernate / etc annotations are just fluff that I never look at once my mapping is working fine. It's similar to imports, really. (Yes, I can use XML instead of annotations, which I might start doing. But I was just wondering...)

• What's the best way to apply a drop shadow?

  What is the best method for applying drop shadows? I'm working on a site right now where we have a good deal of them, however, I've been fighting to find the best method to do it. The site is pretty animation heavy so shadows need to work well with this. I tried a jQuery shadow pulgin. The shadows looked good and were easy to use but were slow and didn't work well with any animations (required lots of redrawing, very joggy). I also tried creating my own jQuery extension that wraps my element in a couple gray divs and then offsets them a little bit to give a shadow effect. This worked well. It's quick and responsive to the animation. However, it makes DOM manipulation/traversal cumbersome since everything is wrapped in these shadow divs. I know there has to be a better way but this isn't exactly my forte. Thoughts?

There are "compound Boolean" values used throughout .NET, and I want to design some of my own. I've been using a series of Boolean variables, which works, but just isn't the same. Examples from .NET include: Color.Black Alignment.Centered [fontProperties].Bold* *I forget the actual name, but you get the idea I want to make something like this: ColorSortQualities None DistinguishColor DistinguishNumberOfColors DistinguishColorPattern Once that's been declared, I could do this: if(searchOptions.ColorSortQualities == DistinguishColor) [do stuff] What is this called?
