• Tool for checking source for dependencies on specific Java versions

  Is there a quick way (e.g. tool) to detect, from the source (or maybe even from compiled classes), which parts of an application call Java API methods that are only implemented in a specific Java version? (e.g. which parts of my app are Java6-specific) I don't necessarily want to hop through all ClassMismatchErrors and avoid the trial-and-error-method. Let's say I only want to document which parts of an application won't work if they were writte for, e.g., Java6 and I want to run it in a version 5 JDK. Is there something like this? Google did not help this time, nor did I find any solution here (a rare case indeed:)

• Smart pagination algorithm

  I'm looking for an example algorithm of smart pagination. By smart, what I mean is that I only want to show, for example, 2 adjacent pages to the current page, so instead of ending up with a ridiculously long page list, I truncate it. Here's a quick example to make it clearer... this is what I have now: Pages: 1 2 3 4 [5] 6 7 8 9 10 11 This is what I want to end up with: Pages: ... 3 4 [5] 6 7 ... (In this example, I'm only showing 2 adjacent pages to the current page) I'm implementing it in PHP/Mysql, and the "basic" pagination (no trucating) is already coded, I'm just looking for an example to optimize it... It can be an example in any language, as long as it gives me an idea as to how to implement it...

• Releasing WinForm Program Updates

  Hello, Another quick question. I'd like to release some updates for a WinForm program, but to date I have simply released an all-new compile. People have to un-install the old version and install the new version. I bet there's a way to get around this, but I don't know what it's called. As you may guess, searches for "updates" "new version" "install" and the other obvious things I've tried have generated an impressive number of irrelevant results. _< I suspect this process has a particular name, which should point me in the right direction, but if it doesn't please link to a tutorial or something. • Self hosted WCF console output from service

  quick one: Is it possible to capture the output stream of a WCF service that is hosted via ServiceHost ( self hosted service) ? I have methods within my WCF service that output useful debugging information, is it possible to send these to it's host's console output? Edit: It appears that I have made an obvious blunder - I was using Debug instead of Console. It is possible to output to the console by using the standard Console output commands in your WCF service class. I have marked the answer that I have found the most useful.

How can I take data I need from database and save it to file "at once"? (as quick as possible? I don't need xml output because I can process data from output on my server later. • Bit Flipping in Hex

  I have an 8 digit hexadecimal number of which I need certain digits to be either 0 or f. Given the specific place of the digits is there a quick way to generate the hex number with those places "flipped" to f. For example: flip_digits(1) = 0x000000f flip_digits(1,2,4) = 0x0000f0ff flip_digits(1,7,8) = 0xff00000f I'm doing this on an embedded device so I can't call any math libraries, I suspect it can be done with just bit shifts but I can't quite figure out the method. Any sort of solution (Python, C, Pseudocode) will work. Thanks in advance.

• Best way to move an image across part of the screen?

• Draggble object hides outside content when wrapt in span

  I have a simple CSS problem In this site http://web.cinaird.se/pdf/test.htm I have a draggable images in the top content, I want a span that float on top of the image and for this I need a span containing the image and a span floating on top. So long no problem but now when i drag the image it hides outside the top content. so my question is as follows, how can I wrap a image and a floating span above and still be able to drag it outside the container. • Long IF tree with strings

  I have a C program which uses Lua for scripting. In order to keep readability and avoid importing several constants within the individual Lua states, I condense a large amount of functions within a simple call (such as "ObjectSet(id, "ANGLE", 45)"), by using an "action" string. To do this I have a large if tree comparing the action string to a list (such as "if(stringcompare(action, "ANGLE") ... else if (stringcompare(action, "X")... etc") This approach works well, and within the program it's not really slow, and is fairly quick to add a new action. But I kind of feel perfectionist. Is there a better way to do this in C? And having Lua in heavy use, maybe there is a way to use it for this purpose? (embedded "chunks" making a dictionary?) Although this part is mostly curiosity.

• File listing application on Windows : what language ?

  I need to create a simple application/script able to list the hierarchy of a folder containing subfolders and files (mostly PDF), so that a user can browse easily these files and maybe have a quick preview of them. The files are all on an internal file server, so the dynamic aspects should all be client-sided. My goal (and what my boss want) is to provide some sort of an HTML page listing, to have something like this. The only problem I have now is that I cannot install anything on computers, so I cannot use PHP, Python, ... This application will only runs on Windows in Internet Explorer. What are the different possibilities I have ? I don't know if I can do this but I was thinking of using HTML + Flex. Thanks for helping.

• Seeking recommendations on automated test framework for C

  I'm writing some code (some of which uses W3C's libwww) in C. It's been a while since I've touched ANSI C. Back in the day we rolled our own test framework. Does anybody here have any test frameworks that they recommend for C programming? Googling around I was inclined to go with Check. It has a page on other unit testing frameworks in C, a few of which I've taken a quick look at. GNU AutoUnit seemed like it might be a good choice since I'm using the GNU build tools (autoconf, automake) but it doesn't look that alive... Another option would be to use a C++ framework and just write my tests in C++ Anyway, any experienced opinions would be appreciated. Thanks.

• Why is the dictionary debug visualizer less useful in Visual Studio 2010?

  I was debugging in Visual Studio 2010, which we just installed and trying to look at a dictionary in the quick watch window. I see Keys and Values, but drilling into those shows the Count and Non-Public members, Non-Public members continues the trail and I never see the values in the dictionary. I can run test.Take(10) and see the values, but why should I have to do that. I don't have VS 2008 installed anymore to compare, but it seems that I could debug a dictionary much easier. • Guaranteeing the onmouseout event to fire

  Hello everybody, I'm currently developing a web application and have run into a little problem. I'm using ExtJS, but I believe this to be a general JS question. When the cursor enters an HTML element, the onmouseover event is fired, when the cursor leaves that element, onmouseout is triggered. So far, so good. Unfortunately, it seems one can't fully rely on this behaviour. Very quick mouse movements can cause the event not to fire (as does repositioning the cursor with a pen tablet, for example). What are the best practices to handle these issues? Do I need to monitor all onmousemove events and manually keep track of where the cursor was last and fire the appropriate onmouseout event myself?

• Reallocating memory via "new" in C++

  Quick question regarding memory management in C++ If I do the following operation: pointer = new char [strlen(someinput_input)+1]; And then perform it again, with perhaps a different result being returned from strlen(someinput_input). Does this result in memory being left allocated from the previous "new" statement? IE, is each new statement receiving another block of HEAP memory from the OS, or is it simply reallocating? Assuming I do a final delete pointer[]; will that deallocate any and all memory that I ever allocated via new to that pointer? Thanks

• Batch backup a harddrive without modifying access times C#

  I'm trying to write a simple program that will backup my flash drive. I want it to work automatically and silently in the background, and I also want it to be as quick as possible. The thing is, resetting all the access times is useless to me, and something I want to avoid. I know I can read the access times and set them back, but I bet it will fail one day in the future. It would be much simpler to read the files without ever changing it. Also, what is the fastest way to do this? What differences would there be between, say, a flash drive and an external hard drive. I am writing this in C#, as it is the simplest way to do it and it will probably last more generations of Windows..

• Android : How to Remove all capital letters from image filenames before importing into Eclipse

  As you know, you can't have capital letters in your image filenames that you use in your Android project (Ressource/Drawables folder). I've got hundreds of small images (GOOG.GIF as an exemple) that I need to import into my project (I usually do a simple drag and drop from a desktop folder into Eclipse). So here's the question : How do I quickly change all the filenames (replace all capital letters to lower case) before importing into my project ? So, GOOG.GIF becomes goog.gif AAPL.GIF becomes aapl.gif etc. Any quick command line solution or another tool to do just that ? Thanks.

• Do I need to include all fields in my entity framework model

  Quick question for everyone: Do I need to include all the database table fields on my EF model? For example; I've created a sub-model that only deals with tblPayment and associated tables. Now, I need to write a LINQ query to get some information about items. I would typically get this by joining tblPayment to tblInvoice to tblInvoiceItem to finally tblOrderItem. I'm wondering if when I add in those other tables, do I need to include all the fields for tblInvoice and tblInvoiceItem? Ideally; I'd just like to keep the fields I'd need to join on, as that would limit the possibility of my sub-model breaking if other fields on those tables are modified/deleted. Can I do this?

• Why does Net::Twitter complain "HTTP::Message content not bytes"?

  We have been using Perl's Net:Twitter CPAN module (version 3.12) and basic authentication (not OAuth) for almost a year now to syndicate updates from our site to our Twitter account. We just migrated to a new server last week and since the move our updates to Twitter have stopped and the following error is being reported whenever we try to post an update: HTTP::Message content not bytes at /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.8/HTTP/Request/Common.pm line 90 Here is the code we're using the update our Twitter account: use Net::Twitter; my $twitter = Net::Twitter->new( traits => [qw/API::REST/], username => $username, password => $password, source => 'twitterfeed' ); my $result = $twitter->update($status); I have no idea what the issue is and was hoping that someone else has run into this issue and can provide a quick solution. • Avoid application becoming unresponsive on download

  Hi I have an application which downloads a file from a network location and then displays that files information. It uses WebClient.DownloadFile to achieve this. The problem is, when the user clicks a button to start the download, the application becomes unresponsive until the file has downloaded. This gives the impression the application may have hung. I would like to seek ideas which would avoid this scenario. Though my solution will need to be 'as quick and cheap as possible' I would be interested in hearing about custom loaders that have been built, or some sort of loading symbol / progress bar / sand time clock thingy : ) Thanks for reading.

  I bought a responsive html5 template to create a website for my band. But I miss a page of tour dates, and would create a unique content, simple and quick to load on any device.   Using this bootstrap modal extension and animate.css for fun, how can I take a make an easy ajax modal using :remote => true to fill in the modal box? Also, how would I use the bootstrap modal default "submit/cancel" buttons to interact with a form that's loaded? I'm looking for a more dynamic solution instead of hard-html-ing every modal into the page or using a bunch of jquery ajax calls for each dialog. I've done a few quick searches, but they've turned up nil for this particular solution.

• Using a singleton database class in functions and multiple scripts(PHP) - best use methods

  I have a singleton db connection which I get with: $dbConnect = myDatabase::getInstance(); which is easy enough. My question is what is the least rhetorical and legitimate way of using this connection in functions and classes? It seems silly to have to declare the variable global, pass it into every single function, and/or recreate this variable within every function. Is there another answer for this? Obviously I'm a noob and I can work my way around this problem 10 different ways, none of which is really attractive to me. It would be a lot easier if I could have that $dbConnect variable accessible in any function without needing to declare it global or pass it in. I do know I can add the variable to the $_SERVER array...is there something wrong with doing this? It seems somewhat inappropriate to me. Another quick question: Is it bad practice to do this: $result = myDatabase::getInstance()-query($query); from directly within a function?

• Change right-click context menu options in VS2008

  When I right-click in my class library, I get some quick options to create things, like an Item from the popup list (New Item...), a User Control, etc. E.g. Now in my web app project, I'd like to be able to get the User Control listed in the right-click menu just like Component and Class, so I don't have to click New Item... then choose it from there. Is there a way to do this in the configuration? I can't seem to figure it out in VS.

• Send mail from a Windows script

  I would like to send mail from a script on a Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition. I think the server setup is pretty much out of the box. The mail server is an Exchange one, and when you're on the internal network you can use plain old SMTP. I have done it from my machine with Perl, but unfortunately Perl is not available on the server. Is there an easy way of doing this from a .bat-file or any other way that doesn't require installing some additional software? Edit: Thanks for the quick replies. The "blat" thingie would probably work fine but with wscript I don't have to use a separate binary. I didn't see PhiLho's post the first time I edited and selected an answer. No need for me to duplicate the code here. Just save the script to a file, say sendmail.vbs, and then call it from the command prompt like so: wscript sendmail.vbs
