• Folder Redirection Issues - Freezing, Strange Warnings

  I have Folder Redirection set up in a test environment for a couple accounts. I have followed the instructions for setting up the folder security settings here, and I can confirm that folders are created automatically by the system with the correct security settings when a user logs in. The GPO has been configured to automatically move user files up to the redirected folders, and this is working properly. Problems start occurring when a Windows 7 PC is in use. It is rare, but Explorer will lock up when performing a file write operation (move/copy/save from application). This results in the entire system being unusable, with only a hard reset resolving it (Task Manager doesn't start, the "three finger salute" does nothing, apps stop working). The mouse functions, but clicks do nothing. The other issue is that occasionally when copying/creating/modifying files a dialog box will pop up with the message "You need permission to perform this action. You require permission from XYZ\cardenas to make changes to this folder." The folder that was created by copying an existing one has the correct security settings and lists me as the owner. My company will not be implementing Folder Redirection on XP, since we are making a "clean break" with implementing new technologies with the Windows 7 rollout, so this behavior has not been - nor will be - checked for in XP. • Outlook users connected to exchange can email from other email accounts

  We have found an issue on our systems whereby an outlook user (both 2007 and 2010) connected to our Exchange server (2007) can send emails as other users using the following steps Within Outlook Click <New Email> Select the <From> button to show a list of accounts outlook contains, but it also shows the option Select<Other Email Address>. This brings up a small dialog box with another button which when selected allows the user to select an email from their contacts or the Active Directory. The user in most cases can select any email within the Active Directory and send an email as if it were coming from that selected email. It seems not everyone has this ability and I'm guessing it is something to do with settings in exchange or AD(version 6) or is there a group policy that can be implemented to stop users being able to do this. We have no idea what allows this and I have failed to find anything using Dr Google. No one has setup delegates within outlook but it does seem to be something similar? Does anyone know how to lock this down? Thanks in advance

• ESXi 4.0 Guests Locking up

  I installed ESXi 4.0 on an HP Proliant g5 with a 64bit Xeon processor and took advantage of the free license as I work for a public school. I created two instances of server 2003 from scratch, one to be the DC, DHCP, the other to be a file server and DNS/DHCP backup. I had both guests up and running fine, setup my user accounts, transferred the data, etc etc. Once I joined a client machine to the domain, I would find that both of my Windows guests would lock up. Sometimes it would be for five or so minutes, once it was overnight. The "locked up" state means that as far I could tell, all services were stopped; dhcp no longer handed out IP's, DNS stopped working, I couldn't RDP into the server. The ESXi host, my HP server, was still running fine. VSphere was working, and I could look at the performance of the individual guests.I would try Powering off the hosts from inside VSPhere, and the hosts would start powering off, but get stuck at 95%, and stay that way, sometimes only for 10 minutes, others for hours. Several times I had to restart ESXi from it's console in order to restart my machines. Now, can anyone tell me what is happening, and how I can fix it, or take steps to prevent it? I hired a consultant to come take a look at it, someone who's experience and knowledge I trust, and he told me he had never seen anything like this ever before. He spoke to a friend of his who is VM certified, and he also said he had never heard of this issue. Thanks for your replies, and I'll do my best to respond ASAP. Currently, the server is powered off, and I've reinstituted my nine year old Server 2000 boxes, and I'm considering installing ESXi 3.5. Does anyone know a host created in 4.0 will work in 3.5? I'd really like to avoid having to rebuild those accounts! I know 4.0 works on this server, as I have another server in another school with the same exact hardware running 4.0 fine. Brendan

• Cannot access SMC8014WG-SI provided by TimeWarner/RoadRunner administrative interface...

  I just received installation of RoadRunner internet/TV/Voice and I was given a wi-fi router from the TimeWarner folks. The model is a SMC SMC8014WG-SI. Unfortunately, the password it uses is WEP and that is, as we all know, completely insecure. The tech that was here didn't know how to change it to something like WPA2 w/TKIP, and I was on hold for 20 minutes with the TimeWarner folks before I gave up. My problem is that the default web interface (http://192.168.0.1) isn't responding. I can ping it, I can access the internet through it, but I can't get to the admin interface. I did a "hard reset" of the device but still no dice. My suspicion is that the wi-fi admin interface is disabled (a common setting) but the wired interface isn't working on either of my two laptops (I've tried two laptops with two different cables, no link light activated). Am I SOL? Did they lock this down so I can't do what I want to do? Worst-case is I just hook up my go-to WRT54G router to the other modem and leave this one turned off, but I'd rather use their hardware to avoid any "It's not our problem" in the future. Any thoughts? Thanks!!

• Does WebDAV even work on IIS 7? I say nay

  I've tried every configuration from the top 10 stack overflow and server fault results for WebDAV 405 on IIS (for verb PROPFIND and PUT). I'm running server 2008 SP2. Followed all the instructions here. I'm no stranger to configuring servers. This has gotten nowhere after 8 hours. Confirmed system.webserver in applicationhost.config: <add name="WebDAV" path="*" verb="PROPFIND,PROPPATCH,MKCOL,PUT,COPY,DELETE,MOVE,LOCK,UNLOCK" modules="WebDAVModule" resourceType="Unspecified" requireAccess="None" /> Port 443 with basic auth, same issue. Tried port 80 with windows auth. Broken. (405) Windows authentication. Check. Added authoring rules for default site and application. Check. Not the firewall. Check. added "Desktop Experience" role feature Tried HTTPS with Basic Authentication on port 443. Does not work. No other services are running like Sharepoint. Check. confirmed user has read/write NT level permissions for the folder/virtual dir tried net use * http://localhost /user:MYDOMAIN\me myPass get error 1920, if I don't authenticate I get error 67 confirmed I'm not applying filtering to WebDAV: <requestFiltering> <fileExtensions applyToWebDAV="false" /> <verbs applyToWebDAV="false" /> <hiddenSegments applyToWebDAV="false" /> 405 - HTTP verb used to access this page is not allowed. The page you are looking for cannot be displayed because an invalid method (HTTP verb) was used to attempt access. SHOULD I JUST GIVE UP? • Windows file locks allowing multiple users to write to open file over network

  I have 6 windows computers (xp,vista,7) that need to access a samba share (Ubuntu 12.04). I am trying to make it so only one client can open a file at a given time. I thought this was pretty standard behavior of file locks, but I can't get it to work. The way it is right now a file can be open by two users, and changed and saved by either one of them. The last file saved overwrites what ever changes the other user made. At first I thought this was a Samba configuration problem, but I get this behavior even between two windows machines. So far I have only tested: Windows Xp Windows Vista Windows XP Samba << Windows Vista and both give the same behavior. When I tested the Samba configuration, I had set strict locking = yes and get errors logged like this: close_remove_share_mode: Could not get share mode lock for file _prod/part_number_list_COPY.xlsx Eventually all of the files are going to be moved onto the Samba share, so that is the configuration I am most concerned about fixing. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. EDIT: I tested an excel file again, and it is now working properly in both above mentioned cases, I am also no longer getting the above mentioned error. I don't know what happened, perhaps a restart fixed it? (also works with strict locking = no) Although I still need to find a solution for the CAD/CAM files we use, the software is Vector and it does not seem to be using file locks. Is there any software that I can use to manage these files, so two people can't open/edit them at a time? Maybe a windows application that forces file locks? Or a dirt simple version control system? (the only ones I have seen at are too complicated for our needs).

• Windows Remote Desktop (RDP/MSTSC) fails with Error Code: 5

  I have 2 Windows XP boxen: A (running XP SP3) and B (running XP SP2). I'm using Remote Desktop to connect from A to B. When I connect, I get the login screen (which is slow to respond to keyboard/mouse input), and after logging in, I get the following: Fatal Error (Error Code: 5) Your Remote Desktop session is about to end. This computer might be low on virtual memory. Close your other programs, and then try connecting to the remote computer again. If the problem continues, contact your network administrator or technical support. I've seen one way to (sometimes) get in by opening a second RDP session to the same box [1], and if I wait long enough sometimes it will go ahead and log in anyway. Is there something broken/missing on the PC I'm trying to remote in to? Edited in reply to djangofan: There's nobody listed under "Lock pages in memory". When the double login trick works, a glance at Task Manager shows plenty of free memory, 800MB available out of 1.5 GB. (Performance tab, Physical memory) For what it's worth, this happens consistently after a reboot. What sort of exact info would be useful? • Firefox and Chrome keeps forcing HTTPS on Rails app using nginx/Passenger

  I've got a really weird problem here where every time I try to browse my Rails app in non-SSL mode Chrome (v16) and Firefox (v7) keeps forcing my website to be served in HTTPS. My Rails application is deployed on a Ubuntu VPS using Capistrano, nginx, Passenger and a wildcard SSL certificate. I have set these parameters for port 80 in the nginx.conf: passenger_set_cgi_param HTTP_X_FORWARDED_PROTO http; passenger_set_cgi_param HTTPS off; The long version of my nginx.conf can be found here: https://gist.github.com/2eab42666c609b015bff The ssl-redirect.include file contains: rewrite ^/sign_up https://$host$request_uri? permanent ; rewrite ^/login https://$host$request_uri? permanent ; rewrite ^/settings/password https://$host$request_uri? permanent ; It is to make sure those three pages use HTTPS when coming from non-SSL request. My production.rb file contains this line: # Enable HTTP and HTTPS in parallel config.middleware.insert_before Rack::Lock, Rack::SSL, :exclude => proc { |env| env['HTTPS'] != 'on' } I have tried redirecting to HTTP via nginx rewrites, Ruby on Rails redirects and also used Rails view url using HTTP protocol. My application.rb file contains this methods used in a before_filter hook: def force_http if Rails.env.production? if request.ssl? redirect_to :protocol => 'http', :status => :moved_permanently end end end Every time I try to redirect to HTTP non-SSL the browser attempts to redirect it back to HTTPS causing an infinite redirect loop. Safari, however, works just fine. Even when I've disabled serving SSL in nginx the browsers still try to connect to the site using HTTPS. I should also mention that when I pushed my app on to Heroku, the Rails redirect work just fine for all browsers. The reason why I want to use non-SSL is that my homepage contains non-secure dynamic embedded objects and a non-secure CDN and I want to prevent security warnings. I don't know what is causing the browser to keep forcing HTTPS requests.

• win8: access denied to external USB disk; update access rights fails

  I use to work with 2 laptops (vista and win7), my work being files on an external usb disk. My oldest laptop broke down, so I bought a new one. I had no option other than take win8. 1/ I suspect something changed with access rights, as my external disk suffered some "access denied" problem on win8. I was prompted (by win8) somehow to fix the access rights, which I tried to do, getting to the properties - security. This process was very slow and ended up saying "disk is not ready". Additonnally, the usb somehow was not recognized anymore. 2/ Back to win7, I was warned that my disk needed to be verified, which I did. In this process, some files were lost (most of them i could recover from the folder found00x, but I have some backup anyway). Also, I don't know why, but under win7, all the folder showed with a lock. 3/ Then back again to win8. Same problem : access denied to my disk + no way to change access rights as it gets stuck "disk is not ready". Now I am pretty sure there is some kind of bug or inconsistence in win8 / win7. I did 2/ and 3/ a few times. At some point, I also got an access denied in win7. I could restore access rigths to the disk to "system" (properties - security - EDIT for full control to group "system" ...). But then I still get the same access right pb on win8, and getting stuck in the process to restore full control to "system" -- and "admin" groups. Now, after I tried for more than 3 days, I am losing my patience with that bloody win8 which I did not want to buy but had no choice. I upgraded win8 with the windows updates available. Does not help. Anybody can help me ?

• Are there any Microsoft Exchange Clients for iOS and Android that store their local data in an encrypted manner?

  I don't feel like this is a product recommendation question, more of a "does this tech even exist and is it feasible" question, but if I'm wrong, feel free to give this question the boot. Context: Our company has a bunch of traveling employees who access the company's Exchange server via thier iDevices or android phones, but because of the data protection laws in the state where our company is based (and the nature of the data our company works with), a recent security audit found that all mobile devices (laptops, phones, etc) operated by our company need to have all company correspondence and related data encrypted all the time. For laptops, that was easy: BitLocker or TrueCrypt, problem solved. For phones and tablets, however, I'm stumped. Sure, you can put lock screens/passwords on the phones, but the data is still accessible via external extraction, as law enforcement authorities already know. Question: Are there any clients for Microsoft Exchange that run on iOS or Android which store local data encrypted? The people using our mobile devices do a lot of their work while offline, so just giving them OWA access with SSL connection security isn't enough. Are there apps/technologies that present an additional login credential prompt to decrypt locally stored data in the app's storage area on the phone? My gut reaction when I started looking into this was "that doesn't sound like something Apple would allow into the App Store", but I've been wrong before...

• Group Policy GPO not 'seen' at client

  I have a new OU (natorg.local\NATO\Users) that I am trying to apply GP to. I have created a new user in this OU, and linked the 3 GPO's to this OU: DESKTOP - Folder Redirection (AppData) DESKTOP - Folder Redirection (Desktop) DESKTOP - Folder Redirection (Documents) Hopefully the names are sufficient to suggest what they do exactly. The settings are under User Settings so there is no Loopback processing required (if my understanding is correct).   One of the challenges I face as I try to share tips about our software is that I tend to assume there are features that you just ‘know about.’ Either they’re so intuitive that you MUST know about them, or it’s a feature that I’ve been using for so long I forget that others may have never even seen it before. I want to cover two of those today - Describe (DESC) – SHIFT+F4 Floating Panels My super-exciting desktop SQL Developer and Describe DESC or Describe is an Oracle SQL*Plus command. It shows what a table or view is composed of in terms of it’s column definition. Here’s an example: SQL*Plus: Release 11.2.0.3.0 Production on Fri Sep 21 14:25:37 2012 Copyright (c) 1982, 2011, Oracle. All rights reserved. You invoke it with SHIFT+F4. It will open a floating (non-modal!) window with the information you want. Here’s an example: I can see my column definitions, constratins, stats, privs, etc A few ‘cool’ things you should be aware of: I can open as many as I want, and still work in my worksheet, browser, etc. I can also DESC an index, user, or most any other database object I can of course move them off my primary desktop display The DESC panel’s are read-only. I can’t drop a constraint from within the DESC window of a given table. But for dragging columns into my worksheet, and checking out the stats for my objects as I query them – it’s very, very handy. Try This Right Now Type ‘scott.emp’ (or some other table you have), place your cursor on the text, and hit SHIFT+F4. You’ll see the EMP object open. Now click into a column name in the columns page. Drag it into your worksheet. It will paste that column name into your query. This is an alternative for those that don’t like our code insight feature or dragging columns off the connection tree (new for v3.2!) Got it? SQL Developer’s Floating Panels Ok, let’s talk about a similar feature. Did you know that any dockable panel from the View menu can also be ‘floated?’ One of my favorite features is the SQL History. Every query I run is recorded, and I can recall them later without having to remember what I ran and when. And I USUALLY use the keyboard shortcuts for this. Let your trouble float away…if only it were so easy as a right-click in the real world. But sometimes I still want to see my recall list without having to give up my screen real estate. So I just mouse-right click on the panel tab and select ‘Float.’ Then I move it over to my secondary display – see the poorly lit picture in the beginning of this post. And that’s it. Simple, I know. But I thought you should know about these two things!

• Can't find disk usage in one directory

• Compaq R4000 laptop randomly locking up

  I have a Compaq R4000 laptop with 2GB of RAM, running Ubuntu Linux 9.10. It is randomly locking up on me, approximately once every two days. I have a second partition with Windows XP Home installed, and I have had the system lock up in XP as well, meaning I believe this is a hardware issue. I have run two passes of Memtest86+ with no errors. The system has a fan that has died, so I initially suspected overheating. However the system just locked up on me while I was in the middle of typing a script to warn me / shut down if the temperature was too high. When the lockup happened the temperature was 88°F, so I am now starting to believe that may not be the issue. When the system locks up, I cannot SSH in nor ping it. Nothing shows in syslog when I reboot. I have configured it to send syslog messages to a local server as well and no messages appear on that server when the lockup happens. I am open to any and all advice!

• Restoring open software after a restart event in windows

  I find that at the end of a long day, I sometimes have a large number of programs running. All which I will need to use tomorrow. Normally, this isn't an issue, I can simply lock the machine and come back tomorrow. My problem arrises when windows update launches in the middle of the night and force restarts my computer. That in turns closes all my open software. I of course save everything regularly so I don't loose anything, but I waste time reopening all of those resources whenever there is a restart. [EDIT] I should clarify that I still want to be able to restart my computer when an update comes down. Preventing the restart only delays the problem until later. I should have been more specific in that I want to be able to recover my working environment after a restart for any reason. Things like scheduled maintence, power loss, updates, and software installs. [EDIT] I can't simply have them setup to launch at startup becasuse those files change from week to week. So I need something that monitors what I have open, and gives me the option to "recover" those software sessions when I log back in. Anyone have any suggestions on what I can do? I'd even be willing to purchase software to do this for me if that is the only option. Thanks

• backupexec 12.5 not following symlinks on linux agent

  Ok, we are at a loss here trying to backup a linux box to a backupexec server... we got a backupexec 12.5 server and a "backupexec for windows servers linux agent" (sigh) running on one of our linux boxes. When a backup runs, we get exceptions reported for our symbolic links. it says something like: BACKUP- \\<servername>\[ROOT] File \\<servername>\[ROOT]/<foldername>/<symlink> is in the backup selection list but was not found. Looking at the selection list, the symlink shows as a 1k file on BUE. Tools-Options-Backup has Backup files and directories by following symbolic links/junction points selected. These same checkboxes are selected on the Job Setup-Job Properties-Edit Template-Advanced Additionally, all the checkboxes are checkeced on Tools-Options-Linux, Unix, and Macintosh and on the Job Set-Job Properties-Edit Template-Linux, Unix, and Macintosh. These checkboxes read: "Preserve change time", "Follow local mount points", "Follow remote mount points", "Backup contents of soft-linked directories" and "Lock remote files", but apparently changing those options produce the same result. Any help on how to get BUE to make a proper backup would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

• CopSSH SFTP -- limit users access to their home directory only

  Let me preface this by saying I've read and followed these instructions at the FAQ many times: http://www.itefix.no/i2/node/37 It does not do what the title claims... It allows every user access to every other user's home directory, as well as access to all subfolders below the copssh installation path. I'm only using this for SFTP access and I need my users to be sandboxed into only their home directory. If you know a fool-proof way to lock users down so they can see only their home directory and its subfolders, stop reading now and reply with the solution. The details: Here is exactly what i tried as I followed the FAQ. My copSSH installation directory is: C:\Program Files\CopSSH net localgroup sftp_users /ADD **Create a user group to hold all my SFTP users cacls c:\ /c /e /t /d sftp_users **For that group, deny access at the top level and all levels below cacls "C:\Program Files\CopSSH" /c /e /t /r sftp_users **Allow my user group access to the copSSH installation directory and its subdirectories For each sftp user, I create a new windows user account, then I: net localgroup sftp_users sftp_user_1 /add **Add my user to the group I've created Open the activate user wizard for CopSSH, choosing the user, "/bin/sftponly" and Remove copssh home directory if it exists **Remains checked Create keys for public key authentication **Remains checked Create link to user's real home directory **Remains checked This works, however, every user has access to every other user's home directory as well as the CopSSH root directory.... So I tried denying access for all users to the user home directory: cacls "C:\Program Files\CopSSH\home" /c /e /t /d sftp_users **Deny access for users to the user home directory Then I tried adding permissions on a user-by-user basis for each users home\username folder. However,these permission were not allowed by windows because of the above deny rule i created at the home directory was being inherited and over-riding my allow rule. The next step for me would be to remove the deny rule at the home directory and for each user folder, add a deny rule for every user it doesn't belong to, and add an allow rule for the one user it does belong to. However, as my user list gets long, this will become very cumbersome. Thanks for the help!

• Laptop GPU apparently blew up, motherboard doesn't even turn on its power LED. [But..]

  EDIT: (Was: Laptop automatic shutdown after 2 seconds) If I take out the GPU, the motherboard LED turns on but then [if it attempts to power up and boot] it turns off after 2 seconds [fans turn on normally in that short period]. [Without the GPUs out there's not even an attempt to boot.] It's an SLI motherboard for a toshiba (model X200-219). If I take out one of the GPUs (they are on top of each other) it surprisingly lets the motherboard turn on too (as it is if both are out) but it still turns off after 2-3 seconds, same behavior. I wonder if it's the GPU that produces the 'turn off after being on' behavior and not something else. [Has anyone seen this behavior with blown up GPUs or could it be something else?] Previous question (before EDIT. Sorry, but someone thought it productive to lock the other one as duplicate): I'm trying to insvestigate which component produces this behavior. Other indications show it may be the GPU but I wonder if anyone knows more. It's a Toshiba Satellite X200 description: AC power shows the power being fed normally, when turned on the fan works and it appears to be starting up but after 2 seconds it shuts down with only the 'AC power connected" led on. -- seconds are about up to 4,maybe not 2 exactly.
