• Alternatives to MS project server

  I manage a small group and I'd keep my work breakdown in project. However, it's difficult to provide my team with an adequate view into the project and ability to report on their progress. I looked at MS Project Server (the sharepoint webpart) but it's an expensive proposition. Has anyone had any experience with any other tool (commercial is fine) that helps team view and report on their work as managed by MS Project? FWIW, I have looked at OpenProj and it appears to be a decent solution for viewing project files on the desktop. Anything web-based, keeping in mind that I'd like people to report on their work not just view their work.

• Does CAS Support Application Level Impersonation?

  I have a PHP application that is successfully authenticating against a CAS server. One of the features supported by the application is impersonation; a user with the appropriate privileges can impersonate another of the application. Generally, this isn't a problem because the app itself can keep track of who the user is impersonating and manage privileges (which are based on username). A new requirement has come up, though, that requires the original app to include, via an iframe, content from a second PHP app that is also CAS-enabled. Somehow, I need for the second app to know whether impersonation is happening in the first. I don't want to pass usernames around for security reasons, so I'm wondering whether I can offload the responsibility for handling impersonation to the CAS server which is shared by both apps. • How to preview any files inside a Java application ?

  I'm using a JTree to browse the content of a folder and I want that when a user click on a file, the software shows a preview of it (a screenshot of its first page). The files are mostly Office documents and PDF. I manage to do it for PDF file using a module downloaded from Sun, but I'd like to know if there is a way to do it using any software (JARs preferably) or even the built-in Windows API. I was thinking of converting the file to PDF then do a preview of this PDF but this isn't optimal. Any ideas ?

So to my question, i have used devise ever since i got over to Rails 3, that was around the first or second beta, and now i also needs some Roles. So i searched the net, and i searched! And what i found was that CanCan should be the best solution. But i'm unsure if CanCan can manage my needs, like i want a forum moderator who can edit/destroy the topic, but the user who created the topic should also be able to edit, so how can i do that?   I'm trying to implement the Variable envelope return path (VERP) method to manage email addresses (ie when an email I send bounces back I want it to be sent to a specific email address so that I can update my database to avoid sending emails to that email address in the future). According to this article it is possible to specify the email address a bounce email is sent to. How do you do this in .Net? For example say I ([email protected]) want to send an email to you ([email protected]). If [email protected] doesn't exist anymore I want yourserver to send the bounce email to [email protected]). This way when I receive this bounced email I know that [email protected] is not a valid email address anymore and I can update my database accordingly. In this example, the bounce address would be: [email protected] How do you specify it using System.Net.Mail?

  Hi, Does anyone know of a solid C# library / approach to manage a hierarchy/web type collection? This would be a library that would basic consist of the concept of nodes & relationships, for example to model web pages/files linked under a URL, or modeling IT infrastructure. It would have key methods such as: Node.GetDirectParents() Node.GetRootParents() Node.GetDirectChildren() Node.GetAllChildren() So it's smarts would include the ability to "walk the tree" of nodes based on the relationships when someone does ask for "give me all the children under this node" for example. It ideally include a persistence layer, to save/retrieve such data to/from a databases (e.g. with a Nodes and Relationships table). Thanks

In my apllication I have a page DataEntry.aspx wich has 3 web user control.Each user control manage an entity and use a repository class to access data. The final user before save all the changes can add or remove entity in memory. My question is: how can i share the ObjectContext between the repositories? • Send through Email, or store in database?

  I have wondered when it is best to send an email, and when its best to store data in a database/log file. Everytime a user wants to contact me or inform me of soething, I suppose an email is best.. but is an email always preferred over other ways, and in what cases. Possible reasons for being contacted I can think of are questions, suggestions, feedback, reporting abuse, advertising, etc... I assume email, "why add unnecessary things to the DB?", but I figure data in DB would be a lot easier to manage. Whats the better/best way to be informed of things like this.. What is the best way for you (webmaster) to be informed of something by users? through email, or some other way

  From the documentation of UITableView / UITableViewController: If you decide to use a UIViewController subclass rather than a subclass of UITableViewController to manage a table view, you should perform a couple of the tasks mentioned above to conform to the human-interface guidelines. To clear any selection in the table view before it’s displayed, implement the viewWillAppear: method to clear the selected row (if any) by calling deselectRowAtIndexPath:animated:. After the table view has been displayed, you should flash the scroll view’s scroll indicators by sending a flashScrollIndicators message to the table view; you can do this in an override of the viewDidAppear: method of UIViewController. So lets say I do my custom stuff here and I do not flash the scroll indicator, and I do not reset the selection (which I think is wrong anyways, the user wants to know from where he came from). Will they reject it?

• Django sys.path.append for project *and* app needed under WSGI

  Hi all, Could somebody give me a pointer on why I need to add my project root path to the python path as well as the application itself in my WSGI file? Project base is called 'djapp', the application is called 'myapp'. sys.path.append(os.path.dirname(os.path.abspath(__file__)) + '/..') sys.path.append(os.path.dirname(os.path.abspath(__file__)) + '/../djapp') os.environ['DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE'] = 'djapp.settings' If I omit the line with "/../djapp/" the log tells my that 'myapp' can not be imported, even though 'djapp.settings' is. (validating 'djapp' was imported) It al runs properly with the ./manage.py command. there's a __init__ in the project folder. For testings sake, I see the same issue using addsitedir: site.addsitedir('/home/user/web/project/') site.addsitedir('/home/user/web/project/djapp') Thanx a lot. Gerard.

• SELECT subset from two tables and LEFT JOIN results

  Hi all, I'm trying to write a bit of SQL for SQLITE that will take a subset from two tables (TableA and TableB) and then perform a LEFT JOIN. This is what I've tried, but this produces the wrong result: Select * from TableA Left Join TableB using(key) where TableA.key2 = "xxxx" AND TableB.key3 = "yyyy" This ignore cases where key2="xxxx" but key3 != "yyyy". I want all the rows from TableA that match my criteria whether or not their corresponding value in TableB matches, but only those rows from TableB that match both conditions. I did manage to solve this by using a VIEW, but I'm sure there must be a better way of doing this. It's just beginning to drive me insane tryng to solve it now. (Thanks for any help, hope I've explained this well enough).

I need to be able to drag and reschedule appointments appropriately. jQuery-ui is pretty neat and I am able to achieve almost everything except that I require that no appointments (divs) may overlap.   If invoices can be voided, should they be used as quotations? I have an Invoices tables that is created from inventory associated with a Job or Order. I could have a Quotes table as a halfway-house between inventory and invoices, but it feels like I would have duplicate data structures and logic just to handle an "Is this a quote?" bit. From a business perspective, quotes are different from invoices: a quote is sent prior to an undertaking and an invoice is sent once it is complete and payment is due, but how to represent this in my repository and model. What is an elegant way to store and manage quotes & invoices in a database? Edit: indicated Job === Order for this particular instance.

• How to catch exception on RollBack

  What is the best way to implement error handling for a SqlTransaction RollBack that already exists within a catch clause? My code is roughly like this: using (SqlConnection objSqlConn = new SqlConnection(connStr)) { objSqlConn.Open(); using (SqlTransaction objSqlTrans = objSqlConn.BeginTransaction()) { try { // code // more code // and more code } catch (Exception ex) { // What happens if RollBack() has an exception? objSqlTrans.Rollback(); throw ex; } } } I believe that my application had an exception in the try block, which in turn was caught in the catch block and then the RollBack was attempted. However, the error that I'm seeing says something about a SqlTransaction.ZombieCheck(), which is making me wonder if the RollBack() itself threw an exception as well. So, do I need to implement some type of error handling at the RollBack()? How do I do that and manage to hold on to the exception that put the execution into the catch block in the first place?

• Newbie Question: Read and Process a List of Text Files

  I'm completely new to .NET and am trying as a first step to write a text processing program. The task is simple: I have a list of 10,000 text files stored in one folder, and I'm trying to read each one, store it as a string variable, then run it through a series of functions, then save the final output to another folder. So far I can only manage to manually input the file path like this (in VB.NET): Dim tRead As System.IO.StreamReader Public Function ReadFile() As String Dim EntireFile As String tRead = File.OpenText("c:\textexample\00001.txt") EntireFile = tRead.ReadToEnd Return EntireFile End Function Public Function Step1() ..... Perhaps for example store all input file path into a text file then read each entry at a time, then save the final output into the save path, again listed in a text file. • Single OpenID Across Sub-Domains

  I'm using OpenID much the same as here on StackOverflow to authenticate my users. What I really need to be able to do though is have that OpenID work across all sub-domains of my site. The site behaves much the same as Kijiji in that each region has it's own subdomain calgary.example.com toronto.example.com vancouver.example.com etc When a user logs into "calgary" and later logs into "toronto", they will be forced to "give permission" at the provider, thus resulting in a new OpenID and resulting also in a new login. My app "can" have multiple OpenID's under one account, but that would become cumbersome to manage. Is there a way to have the provider link up to the top level domain and subsequently work across all sub-domains? I'm using DotNetOpenAuth.

• PHP e-commerce site talking to internal database for stock / ordering?

I'm working on an e-commerce site (either bespoke with PHP, or using Drupal/Ubercart), and I'd like to investigate the site interacting with an internal (filemaker) database we use to manage stock and orders. Currently we manually transfer orders from the web site to our own database, and the site does not check or record changes in stock. My plan to allow the 2 to interact is as follows: Make the internal database available externaly on a machine with a fixed IP Allow external access from the site only Connect to the internal database using ODBC (or similar) Use simple queries to check stock / record stock changes / record order details Am I missing something here as this sounds quite straight forward? Is there another solution I should be taking a look at? Thanks in advance for any help or comments.

• Android: stack management for views in a tab?

  I see some answers here prefer views over activities as contents of tabs. Correct me if I am wrong. My understanding is that by switching out views, it's possible to keep the navigation flow inside a tab (more user friendly, I think). But I wonder how to manage the view stack then in case of the back button events. Also this could cause one giant Activity with large amount of views, which might not be good. So I wish to know why exactly views as contents is preferred before I change my current application to this. Thanks,

• How to set up a has-many relationship in Cocoa?

  I'm building a (very) simple FTP app in Cocoa, and I need to store information on the different types of servers that are supported. So, I've created a ServerType class, which stores all of the relevant information about a single type of server. I then have a ServerTypes class which is designed to manage all of the ServerType classes that are created. My question is how to set up the relationship between the two objects. Is there a preferred method to do so? Also, since Objective-C doesn't support non-instance classes, where should I create an instance of ServerTypes that will have to be used throughout the entire program? Or is there a better way to do that? I need it to be KVC compliant so That I can bind one of the ServerType properties to an NSPopupBox. Sorry about the large volume of questions, I'm fairly new to Cocoa and Objective-C. If you need to see code, just ask and I'll be happy to add some. :) SphereCat1

  Hi, I have read the doc and some tutorials to get a .kml file working launching the google maps activity. When I hosted the file in a server, this works perfectly: Intent myIntent = new Intent( android.content.Intent.ACTION_VIEW, Uri.parse("geo:0,0?q=http://somedomain.com/file.kml") ); Now, reading this link on how to use intents for gmaps with the developing stage of GEO uri I can't manage how to load a kml file from within the device, I have tried with "q=file:///path-to-file.kml" and with an absolute path too. Has anyone done this yet? PS: in IRC channel recommend me to use apps based on openstreetmaps, but the docs is much more poor than the gmaps doc althought they are OS.

• Using ASP.NET Session for Lifetime Management (Unity)

  I am considering using Unity to manage the lifetime of a custom user class instance. I am planning on extending the LifetimeManager with a custom ASP.NET session manager. What I want to be able to do is store and retrieve the currently logged in user object from my custom classes, and have Unity get the instance of User from the session object in ASP.NET, or (when in a Win32 project) retrieve it statically or from the current thread. So far my best solution is to create a static instance of my Unity container on startup, and use the Resolve method to get my User object from each of my classes. However, this seems to create a dependency on the unity container in my other classes. What is the more "Unity" way of accomplishing this goal? I would like to be able to read/replace the current User instance from any class.
