• Hibernate pluralization

  I have A MySQL database currently in production use for a CakePHP application A Java SE application accessing the same database via Hibernate, currently in development. I'm using the Netbeans "automigrate" feature to create the POJO classes and XML files (do I really need the XML files when using annotations?). As the schema is quite complex creating the tables manually is way too much work. Cake expects all DB tables to be pluralized (the Address class is automagically mapped to the addresses table). When running the Netbeans automigration it then does pluralization on the already pluralized table names (I'm getting Addresses.java and setAddresseses() methods). I know I'm asking for trouble running two very different data layers against the same database, but I'd like to know if it's possible to have Netbeans generating the POJO classes in singular form or if there is another (better) way to manage this.

  I'm experimenting with using cagradientlayer to draw gradients in our app instead of having a subclass of uiview manage gradients. One snafu that i've come across is that when the view that has the gradient as a sublayer of its main layer gets resized to fit the data i am trying to show, the layer doesn't resize along with it. I end up having the gradient layer end at the original frame size while my view's frame is much larger. Is there a way to have the sublayer autoresize to fit its superlayer's frame, or the superlayer's view's frame?

• ASP.Net WebSite Membership AND C# Windows Form Membership

  This is not real, it's just a project i'm working on I've created a Hotel Management system in C# WindowsForm, it allows staff members to Add/Edit/Update Rooms,Reservation and Customers etc. Along side this Windows-form i'm creating an ASP.net WebSite where customers should be able to register and reserve rooms online. I've come to the point where i need to create some-type of membership method for this website which should correspond to the membership of the windows form. However i'm not sure what method of membership would be best suited for this, i have looked into the asp.net membership, it's what i want however it creates it's own schema and i don't know how i can relate the information to my customers table and c#windows form. I would ideally like it to resemble a real-life situation as much as possible anyway, am i going about this the wrong way? in terms of the c# windows-form what other technology would a business use to manage a system like this where they can add/edit/update there system and have a website which relates. What are my options here?

  Simple task: Send a windows message with dynamically allocated data, e.g. an arbitrary length string. How would you manage the responsibility to free this data? The receiver(s) of the windows message could be responsible to free this data. But: How can you guarantee that all messages will actually be received and thus the linked data will be freed? Imagine the situation that the receiver is shutting down, so it won't process it's message queue any more. However, the message queue still exists (for some time) and can still accept messages, which won't be processed any more. Thanks!

• Is there a way to bring an application's GUI to the current desktop?

  Background: Started a fair amount of work before realizing that a Windows Service cannot start an app with a GUI that displays without potential problems. The proper solution of separating the GUI of the app to be started is non-trivial, so I'm trying to think of alternative solutions. There is a GUI to manage the service that is a separate executable, but the process to be launched (actually multiple instances of it) has its own GUI that needs to be shown. It doesn't need to be made visible by the service itself, but it needs to be at least able to be made visible by another process with a visible GUI. The Windows User that is running the service and that needs to see the GUI of the launched process is the same and known at install time. Is there some way to accomplish this or is it back to the drawing board? Also both the service and the app to launch are both our code and modifiable.

• How to display Preferences in a View

  I'm building some sort of wizard to create user accounts in Sync and Manage account. I use a ViewFlipper my activity has to be an AccountAuthenticatorActivity. That said it also means I can't inherit PreferenceActivity. So I looked up in the code of PreferenceActivity and I believe it should be possible to have a PreferenceView that inherit from ListView. The Activity part of PreferenceActivity isn't really needed as far as I know. Though the PreferenceManager is what really blocks me. private PreferenceManager onCreatePreferenceManager() { PreferenceManager preferenceManager = new PreferenceManager(this, FIRST_REQUEST_CODE); preferenceManager.setOnPreferenceTreeClickListener(this); return preferenceManager; } This function imply that we can instatiate PreferenceManager using the operator new. Apparently, the sdk hide the constructor of the PreferenceManager. I'm kind of confused. Is there a way to inflate my preferences and display them without PreferenceActivity?

• interface builder breaks on dual display

  Hi, I frequently connect and disconnect my laptop from a secondary display. Additionally I work in a small group that uses svn to manage xib files. It seems that if you drag a UIView display into a secondary display in interface builder and save the xib then either disconnect that display or open it on a computer with a secondary display in a different postion (left v right of the screen for example) then the view can't be seen/closed/moved. I've found no work around other than attaching a secondary display in the same position. This can be a real pain. Has anyone found a solution to this? thanks.

  I'm trying to work out a good method to manage code changes on a large project with multiple teams. We use subversion at the moment, but I want more flexibility in building a new release than I seem to be able to get with subversion. Here's roughly I want: for each developer to create easily identifiable patches for the project. Each patch delivers a complete user story (a releasable feature or fix). It might encompass many changes to many files. developers are able to easily apply and remove their own and other patches to facilitate testing release manager selects the patches to be used in the next release into a new branch branch is tested, fixes merged in, and ultimately merged into live teams can then pull these changes back down into their sandboxes. I'm looking at stacked git as a way of achieving this, but what other tools or techniques can deliver this sort of workflow?

• What is Perl's secret of getting small code do so much?

  I've seen many (code-golf) Perl programs out there and even if I can't read them (Don't know Perl) I wonder how you can manage to get such a small bit of code to do what would take 20 lines in some other programming language. What is the secret of Perl? Is there a special syntax that allows you to do complex tasks in few keystrokes? Is it the mix of regular expressions? I'd like to learn how to write powerful and yet short programs like the ones you know from the code-golf challenges here. What would be the best place to start out? I don't want to learn "clean" Perl - I want to write scripts even I don't understand anymore after a week. If there are other programming languages out there with which I can write even shorter code, please tell me.

It's a comic shop, and I want to make a place where people can manage their own subscriptions. Since the number of different titles a customer subscribes to can vary pretty widely, I want a way to make a completely dynamic form, with people able to add as many new lines as they need and I'm really struggling with Drupal's documentation.   Many email clients don't like linked CSS stylesheets, or even the embedded <style> tag, but rather want the CSS to appear inline as style attributes on all your markup. BAD: <link rel=stylesheet type="text/css" href="/style.css"> BAD: <style type="text/css">...</style> WORKS: <h1 style="margin: 0">...</h1> However this inline style attribute approach is a right pain to manage. I've found tools for Ruby and PHP that will take a CSS file and some separate markup as input and return you the merged result - a single file of markup with all the CSS converted to style attributes. I'm looking for a Perl solution to this problem, but I've not found one on CPAN or by searching Google. Any pointers?   I've been working on a Django project using South to track and manage database schema changes. I'm starting a new Java project using Google Web Toolkit and wonder if there is an equivalent tool. For those who don't know, here's what South does: Automatically recognize changes to my Python database models (add/delete columns, tables etc.) Automatically create SQL statements to apply those changes to my database Track the applied schema migrations and apply them in order Allow data migrations using Python code. For example, splitting a name field into a first-name and last-name field using the Python split() function I haven't decided on my Java ORM yet, but Hibernate looks like the most popular. For me, the ability to easily make database schema changes will be an important factor.

• C# programmer - necessary to learn C/C++?

  Hey, I have been programming now for a couple of years. But never any low level language. I started off with some java and some VB. Then I went over to VB.NET and now for a while I have been writing C#. As you see, I have never written any low level language where I had to deal with memory management. Is this something I should do, like a route of passage that every programmer should go through? I am a bit keen on trying to perhaps writing in assembler directly. This would suit me personally good as I have 2 parents that have been writing assembler for ages. Is it necessary for a professional programmer these days to know how to manually manage memory?

• Will using a VCS help me as a web dev?

  I'm thinking of trying a VCS such as subversion, to manage my next project, but I'm not sure if will offer any real benefits for me as a web developer. As I understand it, one of the major benefits of a VCS is that a group of people can work on a project at once. Reading material on the subject seems pretty one sided: "Using a version control system is an absolute must for a developer of a project above a few hundred lines of code" ...and I've got a feeling it could become a chore, with not many benefits. I work on development server on the local network, so any amount of people can work on the files already. If anyone needs to get in remotely, they use FTP. What would a modern version control system give me on top of this?

  Hi! all, I was trying to write a udp server who send an instance of a file to multiple clients.Now suppose any how I manage to know the address of those client statically(for the sake of simplicity) and now I want to send this packet to these addresses.So how exactly I need to fill the sockaddr structure to contain the address of these clients.I am taking an array of sockaddr structure(to contain client address) and trying to send at each one them at a time.Now problem is to fill the individual sockaddr structure to contain the client address. I was trying to do something like that sa[1].sin_family = AF_INET; sa[1].sin_addr.s_addr = htonl(INADDR_ANY);//should'nt I replace this INADDR_ANY with client ip?? sa[1].sin_port = htons(50002); Correct me if this is not the correct way.   I am writing an asp.net application that exposes data in 2 ways: 1 - 1 common section that all users can see 2 - a Section that displays data specific to a registered user. in this case the user can decide how it looks (through themes), and manage the data to be displayed. Of course, the logic behind is the same, appearance would be different for as user1 and user2 The questions are : What would be best using : 'http://www.site.com/User1' or 'http://user1.site.com'. knowing that in both cases i have to make the displayed pages look like a seperate site then the root domain in anycase, the pages that will be displayed and customized on the fly are located in a subfolder of the of the asp.net project (projectrootpath\personalpages). What is the best way to map the personalpages subfolder to a subdomain or a 'http://www.site.com/userX' in the address bar. i also use "~/" in the urls which in this case needs to point to the personalpages rather then the root . Any help is gretaly apreciated.

My research into the error lead me to believe that I do not have the proper credentials against the remote machine and so I would like to impersonate a user that does. I was hard pressed to find a way to do this with IronPython. Any help is much appreciated.

• Uniform distribution of binary values in Matlab

  I have a requirement for the generation of a given number N of vectors of given size each consistent of a uniform distribution of 0s and 1s. This is what I am doing at the moment, but I noticed that the distribution is strongly peaked at half 1s and half 0s, which is no good for what I am doing: a = randint(1, sizeOfVector, [0 1]); The unifrnd function looks promising for what I need, but I can't manage to understand how to output a binary vector of that size. Is it the case that I can use the unifrnd function (and if so how would be appreciated!) or can is there any other more convenient way to obtain such a set of vectors? Any help appreciated!

• How to deploy a c# application while including third party DLL's?

  To start with, I don't know much of deployment. I hope my question makes sense. I need to install/deploy a c# application to a number of desktops. It needs a third-party DLL : a c++ library ("lpsolve55.dll", for those interested, it is a free MIP/LP solver, see lpsolve.sourceforge.net/5.5/). I use it in my code in the following way: [DllImport("lpsolve55.dll", SetLastError = true)] public static extern bool add_column(int lp, double[] column); For testing, I have manually copied the .dll file to to project\bin\release, it works fine. My question: I will need an installer for the application, which will manage that the .dll will install as well. I am considering clickonce deployment since I am using visual studio express (2008), but any not too expensive solution will do. What would you advice?
