• How to make a custom installer for games, etc?

  Hello. Can anyone tell me how to create a custom installer to 'install' games. I say custom meaning I don't want the user to have the option where the game is installed. I want it to be a straight forward process, maybe with just one loading bar. The program I'm developing is a 'center' for game playing, which includes a community and other features, such as a timer that records how long a game is played for. I just thought that installing each game in one place, with a simple installer would make the program easier to use. It also will allow me to do other features as the games will all be installed in one place. No need for the user to specify where the game is installed. Would this be possible?

• Sort an array via x86 Assembly (embedded in C++)?? Possible??

  I am playing around with x86 assembly for the first time and I can't figure out how to sort an array (via insertion sort).. I understand the algorithm, but assembly is confusing me as I primarily use Java & C++. • Passing GPS speed via the Eclipse Emulator Control

  Hi, my app queries the GPS-speed using .getSpeed() on a LocationListener. Is there a way to set this speed using the Eclipse Emulator Control or the command line? I tried to feed multiple sets of coordinates to the emulator via the manual GPS-control, but it didn't pick up a speed from that. Also, using a pre-defined GPX-file and playing it doesn't work for me. I would like to test my app without having to take it on a test-drive in my car every time ;)! Thanks!

• Why doesn't functools.partial return a real function (and how to create one that does)?

  So I was playing around with currying functions in Python and one of the things that I noticed was that functools.partial returns a partial object rather than an actual function. One of the things that annoyed me about this was that if I did something along the lines of: five = partial(len, 'hello') five('something') then we get TypeError: len() takes exactly 1 argument (2 given) but what I want to happen is TypeError: five() takes no arguments (1 given) Is there a clean way to make it work like this? • adding a mail contact into AD

  Hi, I am looking for a bit of guidence on how to create mail contacts in AD. This is a follow on question from SO Q#1861336. What I am trying to do is add a load of contact objects into an OU in Active Directory. I've been using the examples on CodeProject, however they only show how to make new user etc. How do I create a contact using c#? Is it similar to creating a new user but with different LDAP type attributes? My plan is to then run the enable-mailcontact cmdlet powershell script to enable Exchange 2010 to see the contact in the GAL. As you can see by my questions I don't usually deal with c# or Active Directory so any help/pointers would be really useful before I start playing with this loaded gun. Thanks, Grant

• overwriting arguments in t-sql functions

  I was playing around with some code and realized that it is possible to overwrite the argument to a t-sql function. i.e., create function someFn(@date date) as begin if @date is null set @date = getdate() will set @date to be today's date if the argument was null. This appears only to make any sense if t-sql is treating their arguments as references not values. I realized that I don't actually know what the t-sql rules are for cases like this and was hoping someone could elaborate what is going on here. (I don't ever recall seeing any value vs. reference discussion with respect to t-sql code for that matter actually..)

• Control ( UIButton, UILable) Hides when the Video plays Again on iPhone!

  Hi, I have displayed UIButton on top of Playing Movie using this code. [moviePlayerWindow addSubview:self.myABC]; } There are 2 buttons on top of my movie layer. They play different videos.Now the strange part is the video plays fine with buttons showing on top of it. When i press the button to play the other movie plays but the buttons doesnt show. Seems the view reloads and flushes all the Subviews. But i have checked it in the debug mode and it enters into the 'if' condition and this line runs [moviePlayerWindow addSubview:self.myABC]; But the buttons are not dislpayed. • What things can I teach a group of children about programming in one day?

  I'm running a day for 30 kids aged 11-18 about computer game programming. They have all opted to do it, but they have no experience at all of programming. My main aim is for them to learn a few things: programming is hard/challenging programming is something they can learn to do being a computer games programmer != playing games all day a little more insight into how games actually work I'd thought of splitting them into two groups, of younger/less experience and older/more experience, then doing slightly different things. I'd considered showing them Scratch, Game Maker, before showing them the basics of Python and getting them to write a simple text based game (perhaps something like, computer picks a random number, you have to guess it in as few guesses as possible, computer says higher/lower for each guess). Does anyone have any ideas of things to do/show them/ways to teach them?

I cannot really understand what I'm doing wrong especially since I have played around with it a lot and been looking online for answers. Perhaps since I am using arrays I am passing the address to printf without realising it?

• Updating the Jpanel of a class

  Hi, After some advice on using jpanel - I'm new to java and playing around with the GUI elements. Bascially what I'm curious about is if I can set up a Jpanel in one class, then somehow add labels etc to the that container, but from another class. Is this possible ? or do i have to set the entire GUI up in one class, but then I guess I would have the same issue, if I wanted to update those fields I had set up in the main class from another class? Apologies I don't really have any code that's usefull to demostrate here - I'm just trying to get the idea going, working out if its possible before I go ahead. And I'm not even sure if this is possible. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  I am trying to write some google map functionlity and playing around with javascript closures with an aim to try organise and structure my code better. • How can I cut down on this spam, and what is the point of it anyway?

  I run a small, niche personal ads site. People post ads and then other people reply to them, which sends an email to the original creator of the ad telling them that someone is interested and giving them contact information for that interested person. Lately there's been some weird spam. People are receiving nonsense replies to their ads. Here is an example of one: Name: xkauwvyr Reply: vRYmbI <a href="http://rypmoxdkfblf.com/">rypmoxdkfblf</a>, url=http://pnjlwvhizwbq.com/]pnjlwvhizwbq[/url], [link=http://hmenwoujxrfv.com/]hmenwoujxrfv[/link], http://ogsekuhoyeud.com/ They vary in length and composition but they all look roughly like that. The first idea I had was to simply throw out any reply that contained the string " Also, is this spam just some ass playing a trick on my website, or is it something more malicious?

• absolute audio synchronization

  I would like to synchronize my computer with an external camcorder recording so that I can know exactly (to the millisecond) when certain recored events happen with respect to other sensors logged by the computer. One idea is to playback short sound pulses or chirps every second from the computer that get picked up by the microphone on the camcorder. But the accuracy of a simple cron job playing a sound clip is not precise enough. I was thinking of using something like gstreamer, but how does one get it to playback a clip at precisely a certain time according to the system clock?

• Can entities be attached to an ISession that weren't previously attached?

  I'm playing around with NHibernate 3.0. So far things are pretty cool. I'm trying to attach an entity that wasn't detached previously: var post = new Post(){ Id = 2 } session.Update(post); // Thought this would work but it doesn't. post.Title = "New Title After Update"; session.Flush(); Is this possible so that only Title gets updated? This is currently possible in EntityFramework. I'd like to not have to load Post from the database when I just need to update a few properties.

  I have used this snippet to prevent webkit from changing antialiasing when using CSS transforms: html{ -webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; } This works fine for most cases, however I noticed some weirdness in chrome when playing around with Bootstrap using this HTML: <button class="btn btn-inverse">John Doe</button> <a class="btn btn-inverse">John Doe</a>? Is there a safer technique to trigger the same antialiasing in webkit for all elements?

• RTL shows numbers at the end of lines

Trying to display a hebrew string that starts with a number, always displays the number at the end of the string like so: 1. ??? ???? ????? but I need the number to be displayed at the right side of the text- any solution to that? It happens with UILabel & UITextField & UITextView and trying to write the number at the left side also produce the same resault. Playing with combinations of UITextAlignment will doesn't help.

• Can I get.seed() somehow?

  In reference to the statement set.seed(), can I get the seed instead after running some code if I didn't set it explicitly? I've been re-running some code containing a function that randomises some sample of the input data (the function is part of the kohonen package). After playing with it for some time to see the variety of output (it was an 'unstable' problem), I noticed one result that was pretty interesting. I of course had not used set.seed(), but wondered if I could get the seed after running the code to reproduce the result? In ?set.seed I see .Random.seed saves the seed set for the uniform random-number generator But I don't know how that helps.

• If element has been 'mouseover'ed for 500ms, run function with jQuery

  For the sanity of my users, I want a 'mouseover' event to run after the selector has been hovered for half a second rather than as soon as they hover it. I first tried a setTimeout function but that runs however long the element has been hovered, I didn't think it through too much I guess. I've also spent a day (on and off) searching (and playing Pacman) ti no result, unless I'm searching for the wrong things. • How to debug properly and find causes for crashes?

  I dont know what to do anymore... its hopeless. I'm getting tired of guessing whats causing the crashes. Recently i noticed some opengl calls crashes programs randomly on some gfx cards. so i am getting really paranoid what can cause crashes now. The bad thing on this crash is that it crashes only after a long time of using the program, so i can only guess what is the problem. I cant remember what changes i made to the program that may cause the crashes, its been so long time. But luckily the previous version doesnt crash, so i could just copypaste some code and waste 10 hours to see at which point it starts crashing... i dont think i want to do that yet. The program crashes after i make it to process the same files about 5 times in a row, each time it uses about 200 megabytes of memory in the process. It crashes at random times while and after the reading process. I have createn a "safe" free() function, it checks the pointer if its not NULL, and then frees the memory, and then sets the pointer to NULL. Isn't this how it should be done? I watched the task manager memory usage, and just before it crashed it started to eat 2 times more memory than usual. Also the program loading became exponentially slower every time i loaded the files; first few loads didnt seem much slower from each other, but then it started rapidly doubling the load speeds. What should this tell me about the crash? Also, do i have to manually free the c++ vectors by using clear() ? Or are they freed after usage automatically, for example if i allocate vector inside a function, will it be freed every time the function has ended ? I am not storing pointers in the vector. -- Shortly: i want to learn to catch the damn bugs as fast as possible, how do i do that? Using Visual Studio 2008.

Because of tiles-based game with fixed tile sizes and my character animation have each width and height size for each frame. When i attach animation to character code. Example , with my game if i press key to move character , then my character will playing "moving" frame , because of this frame animation have difference width and height then my game function check collisions fail , I want to ask you how can i solve this problem ?.
