• How do I stop Google indexing my main page as https [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: https:// search results appearing on Google for purely http:// site 2 answers Due to historic reasons, we have things set up so that "www.mydomain.com" redirects to "store.mydomain.com". This has worked perfectly fine until recently, when Google appears to be sending visitors to "https:// www.mydomain.com" which doesn't have an SSL-certificate (and never has). Strangely, its only the first link that goes to "https:// www.mydomain.com", all other links point correctly to "http:// store.mydomain.com". Because there is no certificate on the "www" version, users are getting an error message. How do I make Google revert to pointing the main link at "http:// store.mydomain.com" (or even "http:// www.mydomain.com.") If I remove "https:// www.mydomain.com" from Google webmaster tools, will this also remove the redirected page ("http:// store.mydomain.com)? Thanks.

• Why Wikipedia doesn't appear as a referral in Google Analytics' Traffic sources?

  One of my clients has a website and got not spammy backlinks in a Wikipedia article. When I test it for SEO purposes with Google Analytics (from different IPs), apparently there is no referral information. On the Real-Time view my test visit is visible but with There is no data for this view in the referrals subview. And this visits appear as (direct) / (none) on the Traffic sources view. Wikipedia is not hiding in any way its links origin, since it is shown in the server visits log. Is Google ignoring Wikipedia as a referral? Am I missing anything else? Update: Now it works, several days after the link was active. Maybe something is detecting for how long the link was there so that it doesn't work just from the beggining, as a security measure? Many visits are actually not recorded.

• apache2 server returns (400) syntax error

  There are 900 paths in the googles index to our homepage containing illegal characters. Example: http://www.seriesam.com/filmaffisch/TC%4NK Note the character "%4N". I have no idea where they come from, but would like to update google index with a correct URL using "canonical" in the html code. But the problem is our apache2 server immediately sends a 400 error if you click the link above. How can I configure apache2 not to give an error code, but instead treat the link above as "correct"? Maybe replacing the char %4N with nothing.

  I need to purchase a single license for Visual Studio Professional with MSDN. The MSDN buy site (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/bb841434.aspx) does not allow purchases from India. It directs Indians to purchase from resellers. I contacted Microsoft and they sent me a link to a list of resellers http://www.microsoft.com/india/originalsoftware/business/retailStore1.aspx Many of these resellers do not even have a website. Many of them do not exist at the addresses mentioned (they have moved). Microsoft support personnel also seem very cagey about releasing any information. They do not even read the mail. They simply resend their canned response with the same link. There are many resellers (not mentioned in the microsoft page) who are selling MSDN subscriptions. Are they legitimate?   Given a public site with no logins: I let people post links to public Facebook profiles, and my site fetches the profile picture and displays it. Would it be ok if I just told people to post profiles of which they had the owner’s permission? Does such a statement exonerate me from copyright infringements and place the burden on the user? Edit: For bonus points. Can the statement just be a notice under the button (that will save the link) that says that "By clicking this button you agree to the terms and conditions" with maybe a link to the terms and conditions.

• Adding a list of "recent articles" affects SEO

  We have a site which has a sidebar with sections (or "widgets" if you like) showing stuff like "Recent Articles", "Other Articles by this User", "Similar Articles" etc. The issue is, Google seems to take these links very seriously. In fact, if I have only a single article which is closely related to a certain phrase (and several other pages link to it in their sidebars), when I do a Google search, it lists all those other pages highlighting that one link to the page that should actually be the most relevant one. And these pages don't even mention the phrase anywhere else. It there a common approach with adding these sidebar links? For example, I might add them through ajax after the page is loaded, but then crawlers will have harder time finding them?

• My website links now include DirectX categories

  I’ve done a bit of overdue updates to my website. The links page - http://www.bobtacoindustries.com/Developers/Links  - now includes DirectX links. I’ve also updated all of the links that were broken in the recent changes to the App Hub site. If you have any good links you think I’m missing, let me know. I haven’t had a chance to do any dead link checking & pruning yet so there might be some links that go to the wrong place or go nowhere at all. That’s the problem with link repositories; maintenance of them is quite a bit of work. But hopefully I’ll find some time to do that soon.

• Launchpad fails to build a package for my PPA

  I'm trying to build a package on Launchpad's Debian build system for PPAs but I'm having some issues with a certain package. The package I'm trying to build (zorin-xwinwrap) contains a source C file which I'm trying to get to compile and build on Launchpad's server so that it would install and work on 32 bit (i386) and 64 bit (amd64) systems. Unfortunately I keep on getting an Error code 2 with the debian/rules file and I have no clue how to fix this issue. • Search Engine Query Word Order

  I've pages with titles like 'Alpha with Beta'. For every such page, there is an inverse page 'Beta with Alpha'. Both pages link to each other. When someone on Google searches for 'Beta with Alpha', I'd like them to land on the correct page, but sometimes 'Alpha with Beta' ranks higher (or vice versa). I was thinking of inspecting the referral link when a visitor arrives on my site, and silently redirecting them to the correct page based on what they actually searched for. Just wondering if this could be penalized by Google as 'cloaking/sneaky redirects'? Or is there a better way to ensure that the correct page on my site ranks higher for the matching query?

• How to reset wireless card settings

  Yesterday i was playing around of the wireless settings, and set up a tftp server. Today, i found the wireless icon does not show up on the panel anymore.. monitor and bluetooth are still there... I did: ifconfig -a, and it shows: etho0 link encap:ethernet, and it has: HWaddress inet6 addresss. RXbytes 0 TX bytes: 0, but it does not even have a ip4 address, nor a mask. The other one is: l0 link encap: local loopback inet addr 127.0.0.1. mask 2550 0 0 Can anyone help me how to reset the settings for my wireless connection? Thanks

• Simple Hierarchical Clustering Implementations for C#?

  I need a C# library that can do hierarchical single/complete link clustering. It's for a BSc final year project and I can't find any free implementations. I'd be happy to port a small(ish) Java project to C#, but most of the Java implementations are contained within huge libraries that have 30+ algorithms. The problem with large libraries is that one has to port 50% of the entire library due to dependency fanout. I'd be extremely grateful if anyone knows of any free single/complete link clustering implementations for C# or a small Java implementation of either! By the way, as I am a student, it may be possible to ask for an academic/research license from commercial companies.

• Share buttons vs sharer urls

  As some people might know, adding share buttons from Facebook and Twitter can cause a page to slow down. I've seen many sites pass on the common iframe implementations that these sites offer and simply create icons that link to a sharer url for better control of page performance. http://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cnn.com%2F&t=CNN%26s+website%27 However, I've also read that Facebook is dropping support for these links. • How can I force new windows to open in background & without focus?

  I have Opera set as my default browser but it is the same for Firefox. When opening a link in Liferea, the link opens in an external browser and the browser gets focus. I would like to open the links in background (so that the browser does not get focus). The only solution is to set Focus prevention level to Normal in the Focus & Raise Behaviour tab of General options in CCSM. But this messes things for other things. DO you have any other idea how to prevent new windows to have focus? I am using Unity on 11.10.

• Storing a Hex Grid

  I've been creating a small hex grid framework for Unity3D and have come to the following dilema. This is my coordinate system (taken from here) Link because I'm a new user It all works pretty nicely except for the fact I have no idea how to store it. I originally intended to store this in a 2D array and use images to generate my maps. One problem was that it had negative values (this was easily fixed by offsetting the coordinates a bit). However, due to this coordinate system, such an image or bitmap would have to be diamond shaped - and since these structures are square shaped, this would cause a lot of headaches even if I hack something together. Is there anything I'm missing that could fix this? I recall seeing a forum post regarding this in the unity forums but I can no longer find the link. Is writing a set of coordinate translators the best solution here? If you guys think it would be helpful, I can post code and images of my problem.

When my site comes up in a Google search, there are 2 links displayed underneath: I believe these links are called "Google sitemap" and my question is how to configure them in Wordpress. Because while the right link is pointing to the /ueber-mich URL at the website, the left link was pointing to an non-existing /imprint and I had to add that webpage as a workaround for now. And I'd like to change the /imprint to German /impressum anyway (currently I use mod_rewrite to redirect).

  Environment: Ubuntu 11.10 I have a Java application as a jar file. I have created a batch file that contains the following line: java -jar ~/MyApp.jar When I execute this batch file, the Java application works as expected. To create a desktop link, I copied this batch file into my "Desktop" folder. This results in an icon appearing on the desktop. However, the icon shows "Java" on it. I would like to associate a different icon to this desktop link. Would appreciate it if someone can point me in the right direction.

• What is the benefit of the "download will begin shortly" page?

  I've noticed many websites that host files for downloads have an interstitial page between the download link/button and the actual start of the download. Terminology on the page may include "Your download will begin shortly. If it does not, try this direct link". What is the purpose of this page? It seems to draw away from the general experience of downloading a file. Is this beneficial for bookmarking? Less experienced users? Analytics?
