  • Finding direction of travel in a world with wrapped edges

    - by crazy
    I need to find the shortest distance direction from one point in my 2D world to another point where the edges are wrapped (like asteroids etc). I know how to find the shortest distance but am struggling to find which direction it's in. The shortest distance is given by: int rows = MapY; int cols = MapX; int d1 = abs(S.Y - T.Y); int d2 = abs(S.X - T.X); int dr = min(d1, rows-d1); int dc = min(d2, cols-d2); double dist = sqrt((double)(dr*dr + dc*dc)); Example of the world : : T : :--------------:--------- : : : S : : : : : : T : : : :--------------: In the diagram the edges are shown with : and -. I've shown a wrapped repeat of the world at the top right too. I want to find the direction in degrees from S to T. So the shortest distance is to the top right repeat of T. but how do I calculate the direction in degreed from S to the repeated T in the top right? I know the positions of both S and T but I suppose I need to find the position of the repeated T however there more than 1. The worlds coordinates system starts at 0,0 at the top left and 0 degrees for the direction could start at West. It seems like this shouldn’t be too hard but I haven’t been able to work out a solution. I hope somone can help? Any websites would be appreciated.

  • Can't get sprite to rotate correctly?

    - by rphello101
    I'm attempting to play with graphics using Java/Slick 2d. I'm trying to get my sprite to rotate to wherever the mouse is on the screen and then move accordingly. I figured the best way to do this was to keep track of the angle the sprite is at since I have to multiply the cosine/sine of the angle by the move speed in order to get the sprite to go "forwards" even if it is, say, facing 45 degrees in quadrant 3. However, before I even worry about that, I'm having trouble even getting my sprite to rotate in the first place. Preliminary console tests showed that this code worked, but when applied to the sprite, it just kind twitches. Anyone know what's wrong? int mX = Mouse.getX(); int mY = HEIGHT - Mouse.getY(); int pX = sprite.x; int pY = sprite.y; int tempY, tempX; double mAng, pAng = sprite.angle; double angRotate=0; if(mX!=pX){ tempY=pY-mY; tempX=mX-pX; mAng = Math.toDegrees(Math.atan2(Math.abs((tempY)),Math.abs((tempX)))); if(mAng==0 && mX<=pX) mAng=180; } else{ if(mY>pY) mAng=270; else mAng=90; } //Calculations if(mX<pX&&mY<pY){ //If in Q2 mAng = 180-mAng; } if(mX<pX&&mY>pY){ //If in Q3 mAng = 180+mAng; } if(mX>pX&&mY>pY){ //If in Q4 mAng = 360-mAng; } angRotate = mAng-pAng; sprite.angle = mAng; sprite.image.setRotation((float)angRotate);

  • MiniMax not working properly(for checkers game)

    - by engineer
    I am creating a checkers game but My miniMax is not functioning properly,it is always switching between two positions for its move(index 20 and 17).Here is my code: public double MiniMax(int[] board, int depth, int turn, int red_best, int black_best) { int source; int dest; double MAX_SCORE=-INFINITY,newScore; int MAX_DEPTH=3; int[] newBoard=new int[32]; generateMoves(board,turn); System.arraycopy(board, 0, newBoard, 0, 32); if(depth==MAX_DEPTH) { return Evaluation(turn,board);} for(int z=0;z<possibleMoves.size();z+=2){ source=Integer.parseInt(possibleMoves.elementAt(z).toString()); System.out.println("SOURCE= "+source); dest=Integer.parseInt(possibleMoves.elementAt(z+1).toString());//(int[])possibleMoves.elementAt(z+1); System.out.println("DEST = "+dest); applyMove(newBoard,source,dest); newScore=MiniMax(newBoard,depth+1,opponent(turn),red_best, black_best); if(newScore>MAX_SCORE) {MAX_SCORE=newScore;maxSource=source; maxDest=dest;}//maxSource and maxDest will be used to perform the move. if (MAX_SCORE > black_best) { if (MAX_SCORE >= red_best) break; /* alpha_beta cutoff */ else black_best = (int) MAX_SCORE; //the_score } if (MAX_SCORE < red_best) { if (MAX_SCORE<= black_best) break; /* alpha_beta cutoff */ else red_best = (int) MAX_SCORE; //the_score } }//for ends return MAX_SCORE; } //end minimax I am unable to find out the logical mistake. Any idea what's going wrong?

  • Move a 2D square on y axis on android GLES2

    - by Dan
    I am trying to create a simple game for android, to start i am trying to make the square move down the y axis but the way i am doing it dosent move the square at all and i cant find any tutorials for GLES20 The on draw frame function in the render class updates the users position based on accleration dew to gravity, gets the transform matrix from the user class which is used to move the square down, then the program draws it. All that happens is that the square is drawn, no motion happens public void onDrawFrame(GL10 gl) { user.update(0.0, phy.AccelerationDewToGravity); GLES20.glClear(GLES20.GL_COLOR_BUFFER_BIT | GLES20.GL_DEPTH_BUFFER_BIT); // Re draws black background GLES20.glVertexAttribPointer(maPositionHandle, 3, GLES20.GL_FLOAT, false, 12, user.SquareVB);//triangleVB); GLES20.glEnableVertexAttribArray(maPositionHandle); GLES20.glUniformMatrix4fv(maPositionHandle, 1, false, user.getTransformMatrix(), 0); GLES20.glDrawArrays(GLES20.GL_TRIANGLE_STRIP, 0, 4); } The update function in the player class is public void update(double vh, double vv) { Vh += vh; // Increase horrzontal Velosity Vv += vv; // Increase vertical velosity //Matrix.translateM(mMMatrix, 0, (int)Vh, (int)Vv, 0); Matrix.translateM(mMMatrix, 0, mMMatrix, 0, (float)Vh, (float)Vv, 0); }

  • C# Cursor stuck on busy state

    - by Ben
    So I implemented a fixed time step loop for my C# game. All it does at the moment is make a square bounce around the screen. The problem I'm having is that when I execute the program, the window doesn't allow me to close the program and the cursor is stuck on the busy icon. I have to go into visual studio and stop the program manually. Here's the loop at the moment public void run() { int updates = 0; int frames = 0; double msPerTick = 1000.0 / 60.0; double threshhold = 0; long lastTime = getCurrentTime(); long lastTimer = getCurrentTime(); while (true) { long currTime = getCurrentTime(); threshhold += (currTime - lastTime) / msPerTick; lastTime = currTime; while (threshhold >= 1) { update(); updates++; threshhold -= 1; } this.Refresh(); frames++; if ((getCurrentTime() - lastTimer) >= 1000) { this.Text = updates + " updates and " + frames + " frames per second"; updates = 0; frames = 0; lastTimer += 1000; } } }

  • How do I implement movement in a WPF Adventure game?

    - by ZeroPhase
    I'm working on making a short WPF adventure game. The only major hurdle I have right now is how to animate objects on the screen correctly. I've experimented with DoubleAnimation and ThicknessAnimation both enable movement of the character, but the speed is a bit erratic. The objects I'm trying to move around are labels in a grid, I'm checking the mouse's position in terms of the canvas I have the grid in. Does anyone have any suggestions for coding the movement, while still allowing mouse clicks to pick up items when needed? It would be nice if I could continue using the Visual Studio GUI Editor. By the way, I'm fine with scrapping labels in a grid for a more ideal object to manipulate. Here's my movement code: ThicknessAnimation ta = new ThicknessAnimation(); The event handling movement: private void Hansel_MouseLeftButtonDown(object sender, MouseButtonEventArgs e) { ta.FillBehavior = FillBehavior.HoldEnd; ta.From = Hansel.Margin; double newX = Mouse.GetPosition(PlayArea).X; double newY = Mouse.GetPosition(PlayArea).Y; if (newX < Convert.ToDouble(Hansel.Margin.Left)) { //newX = -1 * newX; ta.To = new Thickness(0, newY, newX, 0); } else if (newY < Convert.ToDouble(Hansel.Margin.Top)) { newY = -1 * newY; } else { ta.To = new Thickness(newX, newY, 0, 0); } ta.Duration = new Duration(TimeSpan.FromSeconds(2)); Hansel.BeginAnimation(Grid.MarginProperty, ta); } ScreenShot with annotations: http://i1118.photobucket.com/albums/k608/sealclubberr/clickToMove_zps9d4a33cc.png ScreenShot with example movement: http://i1118.photobucket.com/albums/k608/sealclubberr/clickToMove_zps51f2359f.jpg

  • How to rotate a sprite using multi-touch with AndEngine?

    - by 786
    I am new to Android game development. I am using AndEngine GLES-2. I have created a box with a sprite. This box is now draggable by using the code below. It works fine. But I want multi-touch on this: I want to rotate the sprite with two fingers on that box, and to keep it draggable. I've no idea how do do that, which way should I go? final float centerX = (CAMERA_WIDTH - this.mBox.getWidth()) / 2; final float centerY = (CAMERA_HEIGHT - this.mBox.getHeight()) / 2; Box = new Sprite(centerX, centerY, this.mBox, this.getVertexBufferObjectManager()) { public boolean onAreaTouched(TouchEvent pSceneTouchEvent, float pTouchAreaLocalX, float pTouchAreaLocalY) { this.setPosition(pSceneTouchEvent.getX() - this.getWidth()/ 2, pSceneTouchEvent.getY() - this.getHeight() / 2); float pValueX = pSceneTouchEvent.getX(); float pValueY = CAMERA_HEIGHT-pSceneTouchEvent.getY(); float dx = pValueX - gun.getX(); float dy = pValueY - gun.getY(); double Radius = Math.atan2(dy,dx); double Angle = Radius * 360 ; Box.setRotation((float)Math.toDegrees(Angle)); return true; }

  • Minimize Apps to the System Tray in Windows with MoveToTray

    - by Asian Angel
    Would you like an easy way to minimize apps to the System Tray in Windows and keep your Taskbar clear of clutter? Then all you need is the MoveToTray app to make it happen. MoveToTray does not require installation. Just double click on the exe file or create a shortcut to the app to activate it. When you see the icon for MoveToTray appear in the System Tray you are ready to minimize those apps. To minimize the active app window use the keyboard shortcut “Ctrl + Alt + M” and watch it instantly disappear to the System Tray. To maximize the window simply double click on the app’s icon in the System Tray. Sometimes an app’s regular icon will not display in the System Tray and a copy of MoveToTray’s icon will appear in its’ place (i.e. Paint.NET in our example). Note: There may occasionally be an app that will not minimize to the System Tray. Only one (CubicExplorer) would not minimize during our tests. • Annotation Processor for Superclass Sensitive Actions

    - by Geertjan
    Someone creating superclass sensitive actions should need to specify only the following things: The condition under which the popup menu item should be available, i.e., the condition under which the action is relevant. And, for superclass sensitive actions, the condition is the name of a superclass. I.e., if I'm creating an action that should only be invokable if the class implements "org.openide.windows.TopComponent",  then that fully qualified name is the condition. The position in the list of Java class popup menus where the new menu item should be found, relative to the existing menu items. The display name. The path to the action folder where the new action is registered in the Central Registry. The code that should be executed when the action is invoked. In other words, the code for the enablement (which, in this case, means the visibility of the popup menu item when you right-click on the Java class) should be handled generically, under the hood, and not every time all over again in each action that needs this special kind of enablement. So, here's the usage of my newly created @SuperclassBasedActionAnnotation, where you should note that the DataObject must be in the Lookup, since the action will only be available to be invoked when you right-click on a Java source file (i.e., text/x-java) in an explorer view: import java.awt.event.ActionEvent; import java.awt.event.ActionListener; import org.netbeans.sbas.annotations.SuperclassBasedActionAnnotation; import org.openide.awt.StatusDisplayer; import org.openide.loaders.DataObject; import org.openide.util.NbBundle; import org.openide.util.Utilities; @SuperclassBasedActionAnnotation( position=30, displayName="#CTL_BrandTopComponentAction", path="File", type="org.openide.windows.TopComponent") @NbBundle.Messages("CTL_BrandTopComponentAction=Brand") public class BrandTopComponentAction implements ActionListener { private final DataObject context; public BrandTopComponentAction() { context = Utilities.actionsGlobalContext().lookup(DataObject.class); } @Override public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent ev) { String message = context.getPrimaryFile().getPath(); StatusDisplayer.getDefault().setStatusText(message); } } That implies I've created (in a separate module to where it is used) a new annotation. Here's the definition: package org.netbeans.sbas.annotations; import java.lang.annotation.ElementType; import java.lang.annotation.Retention; import java.lang.annotation.RetentionPolicy; import java.lang.annotation.Target; @Retention(RetentionPolicy.SOURCE) @Target(ElementType.TYPE) public @interface SuperclassBasedActionAnnotation { String type(); String path(); int position(); String displayName(); } And here's the processor: package org.netbeans.sbas.annotations; import java.util.Set; import javax.annotation.processing.Processor; import javax.annotation.processing.RoundEnvironment; import javax.annotation.processing.SupportedAnnotationTypes; import javax.annotation.processing.SupportedSourceVersion; import javax.lang.model.SourceVersion; import javax.lang.model.element.Element; import javax.lang.model.element.TypeElement; import javax.lang.model.util.Elements; import org.openide.filesystems.annotations.LayerBuilder.File; import org.openide.filesystems.annotations.LayerGeneratingProcessor; import org.openide.filesystems.annotations.LayerGenerationException; import org.openide.util.lookup.ServiceProvider; @ServiceProvider(service = Processor.class) @SupportedAnnotationTypes("org.netbeans.sbas.annotations.SuperclassBasedActionAnnotation") @SupportedSourceVersion(SourceVersion.RELEASE_6) public class SuperclassBasedActionProcessor extends LayerGeneratingProcessor { @Override protected boolean handleProcess(Set annotations, RoundEnvironment roundEnv) throws LayerGenerationException { Elements elements = processingEnv.getElementUtils(); for (Element e : roundEnv.getElementsAnnotatedWith(SuperclassBasedActionAnnotation.class)) { TypeElement clazz = (TypeElement) e; SuperclassBasedActionAnnotation mpm = clazz.getAnnotation(SuperclassBasedActionAnnotation.class); String teName = elements.getBinaryName(clazz).toString(); String originalFile = "Actions/" + mpm.path() + "/" + teName.replace('.', '-') + ".instance"; File actionFile = layer(e).file( originalFile). bundlevalue("displayName", mpm.displayName()). methodvalue("instanceCreate", "org.netbeans.sbas.annotations.SuperclassSensitiveAction", "create"). stringvalue("type", mpm.type()). newvalue("delegate", teName); actionFile.write(); File javaPopupFile = layer(e).file( "Loaders/text/x-java/Actions/" + teName.replace('.', '-') + ".shadow"). stringvalue("originalFile", originalFile). intvalue("position", mpm.position()); javaPopupFile.write(); } return true; } } The "SuperclassSensitiveAction" referred to in the code above is unchanged from how I had it in yesterday's blog entry. When I build the module containing two action listeners that use my new annotation, the generated layer file looks as follows, which is identical to the layer file entries I hard coded yesterday: <folder name="Actions"> <folder name="File"> <file name="org-netbeans-sbas-impl-ActionListenerSensitiveAction.instance"> <attr name="displayName" stringvalue="Process Action Listener"/> <attr methodvalue="org.netbeans.sbas.annotations.SuperclassSensitiveAction.create" name="instanceCreate"/> <attr name="type" stringvalue="java.awt.event.ActionListener"/> <attr name="delegate" newvalue="org.netbeans.sbas.impl.ActionListenerSensitiveAction"/> </file> <file name="org-netbeans-sbas-impl-BrandTopComponentAction.instance"> <attr bundlevalue="org.netbeans.sbas.impl.Bundle#CTL_BrandTopComponentAction" name="displayName"/> <attr methodvalue="org.netbeans.sbas.annotations.SuperclassSensitiveAction.create" name="instanceCreate"/> <attr name="type" stringvalue="org.openide.windows.TopComponent"/> <attr name="delegate" newvalue="org.netbeans.sbas.impl.BrandTopComponentAction"/> </file> </folder> </folder> <folder name="Loaders"> <folder name="text"> <folder name="x-java"> <folder name="Actions"> <file name="org-netbeans-sbas-impl-ActionListenerSensitiveAction.shadow"> <attr name="originalFile" stringvalue="Actions/File/org-netbeans-sbas-impl-ActionListenerSensitiveAction.instance"/> <attr intvalue="10" name="position"/> </file> <file name="org-netbeans-sbas-impl-BrandTopComponentAction.shadow"> <attr name="originalFile" stringvalue="Actions/File/org-netbeans-sbas-impl-BrandTopComponentAction.instance"/> <attr intvalue="30" name="position"/> </file> </folder> </folder> </folder> </folder>

  • Creating Gun objects with upgrades?

    - by zardon
    I have a series of guns in my game. I use the Gun class/object like this: (Just an example) @interface Gun : NSObject { NSString *name; // Six-shooter NSNumber *cost; NSNumber *clipPrice; // ie: 700 NSNumber *clipCapacity; // 6 NSNumber *ammoCapacity; // 6 NSNumber *damage; // 0-10 NSNumber *accuracy; // 0-10 NSNumber *fireRate; // 0-10 NSNumber *range; // 0-10 // Not sure if I have all the stats, but this is fine for now } Lets say I want to have 3 upgrades per gun. My problem is I am not sure how to do this. Examples: increase fire-rate increase range increase accuracy silencer double ammo capacity (ie: Drum) double clip capacity (ie: Taped magazine) Thus my question is, I'd like to implement an upgrade system to guns but I am not sure how to do it. Would there be an Upgrade object which is a child to the Gun class, or would it be seperate class altogether. Thanks for your time.

  • Are specific types still necessary?

    - by MKO
    One thing that occurred to me the other day, are specific types still necessary or a legacy that is holding us back. What I mean is: do we really need short, int, long, bigint etc etc. I understand the reasoning, variables/objects are kept in memory, memory needs to be allocated and therefore we need to know how big a variable can be. But really, shouldn't a modern programming language be able to handle "adaptive types", ie, if something is only ever allocated in the shortint range it uses fewer bytes, and if something is suddenly allocated a very big number the memory is allocated accordinly for that particular instance. Float, real and double's are a bit trickier since the type depends on what precision you need. Strings should however be able to take upp less memory in many instances (in .Net) where mostly ascii is used buth strings always take up double the memory because of unicode encoding. One argument for specific types might be that it's part of the specification, ie for example a variable should not be able to be bigger than a certain value so we set it to shortint. But why not have type constraints instead? It would be much more flexible and powerful to be able to set permissible ranges and values on variables (and properties). I realize the immense problem in revamping the type architecture since it's so tightly integrated with underlying hardware and things like serialization might become tricky indeed. But from a programming perspective it should be great no?

  • Map Ctrl and Alt to mouse thumb buttons

    - by murphyslaw
    I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 and have a multi-button Microsoft mouse. I would like to map the CTRL and ALT modifier keys to the left and right thumb buttons of my mouse, respectively, so I can ctrl-click and alt-click without touching the keyboard. My thumb buttons are buttons 8 and 9. I tried the solution in this question: How do I configure a mouse thumb button? which explained how to map a double click to a thumb button - this worked for the double-click but I couldn't figure out how to modify the solution for CTRL and ALT I also tried this: How to map Ctrl/Shift to thumb buttons of Mouse? which used xdotools and xbindkeys. I modified the script to this: ~/.xbindkeysrc: "xdotool keydown alt" b:9 "xdotool keyup alt" release + alt + b:9 "xdotool keydown ctrl" b:8 "xdotool keyup ctrl" release + control + b:8 Which ALMOST works. It simulates a CTRL-key press when I click the left thumb button, but I can't actually hold the button and click at the same time - holding the thumb button seems to prevent it from listening to other input until it is released. Does anyone know how I can make my mouse thumb button actually work as a modifier key, so I can use thumb_button+click instead of CTRL-click?

  • Web hosting company basically forces me to use their domain name [closed]

    - by Jinx
    I've recently stumbled upon an unusual problem with one of hosting companies called giga-international.com. Anyway, I've ordered com.hr domain from Croatian domain name registration company, and my client insisted on using this host provider as couple of his friends already are hosted with them. I thought something was fishy when the first result on Google for Giga International was this little forum rant instead of their webpage. When I was checking their services they listed many features etc... space available, bandwidth etc. I just wanted to check how much ram do I get for my PHP scripts so I emailed them, and they told me that was company secret. Seriously? Anyway, since my client still insisted on hosting with them I've bought their Webspace package. During registration I had to choose free domain name because I couldn't advance registration without it. Nowhere was said, not even in general terms and conditions that I wouldn't be able to change that domain name. At least not for double the price of domain name per year. They said I can either move my domain name over to them (and pay them domain registration), or pay them 1 Euro per month for managing a DNS entry. On any previous hosting solution I was able to manage my domain names just by pointing my domain to their name servers, and this is something completely new and absurd for me. They also said that usual approach is not possible because of security and hardware limitations. I'd like to know what you guys think about this case, and should I report, and where should I report this case. In short. They forced me to register free domain name which doesn't suit my needs in order to register for their webspace package, and refuse to change domain name for my account until I either transfer domain to them or pay them DNS management which costs double the price of the domain name per year.

  • Reflection velocity

    - by MindSeeker
    I'm trying to get a moving circular object to bounce (elastically) off of an immovable circular object. Am I doing this right? (The results look right, but I hate to trust that alone, and I can't find a tutorial that tackles this problem and includes the nitty gritty math/code to verify what I'm doing). If it is right, is there a better/faster/more elegant way to do this? Note that the object (this) is the moving circle, and the EntPointer object is the immovable circle. //take vector separating the two centers <x, y>, and then get unit vector of the result: MathVector2d unitnormal = MathVector2d(this -> Retxpos() - EntPointer -> Retxpos(), this -> Retypos() - EntPointer -> Retypos()).UnitVector(); //take tangent <-y, x> of the unitnormal: MathVector2d unittangent = MathVector2d(-unitnormal.ycomp, unitnormal.xcomp); MathVector2d V1 = MathVector2d(this -> Retxvel(), this -> Retyvel()); //Calculate the normal and tangent vector lengths of the velocity: (the normal changes, the tangent stays the same) double LengthNormal = DotProduct(unitnormal, V1); double LengthTangent = DotProduct(unittangent, V1); MathVector2d VelVecNewNormal = unitnormal.ScalarMultiplication(-LengthNormal); //the negative of what it was before MathVector2d VelVecNewTangent = unittangent.ScalarMultiplication(LengthTangent); //this stays the same MathVector2d NewVel = VectorAddition(VelVecNewNormal, VelVecNewTangent); //combine them xvel = NewVel.xcomp; //and then apply them yvel = NewVel.ycomp; Note also that this question is just about velocity, the position code is handled elsewhere (in other words, assume that this code is implemented at the exact moment that the circles begin to overlap). Thanks in advance for your help and time!

  • Class or Dictionary

    - by user2038134
    I want to create a immutable Scale class in C#. public sealed class Scale { string _Name; string _Description; SomeOrderedCollection _ScaleValueDefinitions; Unit _Unit // properties .... // methods ContainsValue(double value) .... // constructors // all parameters except scalevaluedefinitions are optional // for a Scale to be useful atleast 1 ScaleValueDefinition should exist public Scale(string name, string description, SomeOrderedCollection scaleValueDefinitions, unit) { /* initialize */} } so first a ScaleValueDefinition should be represented by to values: Value (double) Definition (string) these values are known before the Scale class is created and should be unique. so what is the best approach. create a immutable class ScaleValueDefinition with value and definition as properties and use it in a list. use a dictionary. use another way i didn't think of... and how to implement it. for option 1. i can use params ScaleValueDefinition[] ValueDefinitions in the constructor, but how to do it for the other options? and as last at what amount of value's (properties) should i choose one option over the other?

  • How come I cannot make this file executable (chmod permissions)?

    - by bappi48
    I downloaded Android Development Tool for linux (ADT) and placed it in home directory. After unzipping the files, when I double click the "eclipse" executable file; the eclipse works perfectly fine. But If I unzip the ADT in a different directory, in my case directory E: (is shown when I boot in windows 7) There double clicking the same "eclipse" executable file does not run eclipse. It shows error message: Could not display /media/Software/00.AndroidLinux/ADT/eclipse/eclipse. There is no application installed for executable files. Do you want to search for an application to open this file? If I press yes in the Dialog, it finds "Pypar2" which is not my solution. I found that the "eclipse" file permission is following -rw------- 1 tanvir tanvir 63050 Feb 4 19:05 eclipse I tried to change the permission by "chmod +x eclipse" , but no use. This command does not change the file permission at all in this case. what should I do? Relevant output of cat /proc/mounts: /dev/sda6 /media/Software fuseblk rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,user_id=0,group_id=0,default_permissions,allow_other,blksize=4096 0 0 Please not that I'm new to Ubuntu and still learning day by day.

  • Observing MVC, can/should the Model be instantiated in the ViewController? Or where?

    - by user19410
    I'm writing an experimental iPhone app to learn about the MVC paradigm. I instantiate my Model class in the ViewController class. Is this stupid? I'm asking because storing the id of the Model class, and using it works where it's initialized, but referring to it later (in response to an interface action) crashes. Seemingly, the pointer address of my Model class instance changes, but how can that be? The code in question: @interface Soundcheck_Tone_GeneratorViewController : UIViewController { IBOutlet UIPickerView * frequencyWheel; @public Sinewave_Generation * sineGenerator; } @property(nonatomic,retain) Sinewave_Generation * sineGenerator; @end @implementation Soundcheck_Tone_GeneratorViewController @synthesize sineGenerator; - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; [self setSineGenerator:[[Sinewave_Generation alloc] initWithFrequency:20.0]]; // using reference -> fine } // pickerView handling is omitted here... - (void)pickerView:(UIPickerView *)thePickerView didSelectRow:(NSInteger)row inComponent:(NSInteger)component { [[self sineGenerator] setFrequency:20.0]; // using reference -> crash } @end // the Sinewave_Generation class... only to be thorough. Works fine so far. @interface Sinewave_Generation : NSObject { AudioComponentInstance toneUnit; @public double frequency,theta; } @property double frequency; - (Sinewave_Generation *) initWithFrequency: (int) f; @end @implementation Sinewave_Generation @synthesize frequency; - (Sinewave_Generation *) initWithFrequency: (int) f { self = [super init]; if ( self ) { [self setFrequency: f]; } return self; } @end

    i'm trying to throw an arrow in my game, but i'm having a hard time trying to realize how to make a good parabola. What I need: The more you hold "enter" stronger the arrow goes. The arrow angle will be always the same, 45 degrees. This is what I have already have: private float velocityHeld = 1f; protected override void Update(GameTime gameTime) { private void GetKeyboardEvent() { if (Keyboard.GetState().IsKeyDown(Keys.Enter) && !released) { timeHeld += velocityHeld; holding = true; } else { if (holding) { released = true; holding = false; lastTimeHeld = timeHeld; } } } if (released && timeHeld > 0) { float alpha = MathHelper.ToRadians(45f); double vy = timeHeld * Math.Sin(alpha); double vx = timeHeld * Math.Cos(alpha); ShadowPosition.Y -= (int)vy; ShadowPosition.X += (int)vx; timeHeld -= velocityHeld; } else { released = false; } } My question is, what do I need to do to make the arrow to go bottom as it loses velocity (timeHeld) to make a perfect parabola?

  • Compare images after canny edge detection in OpenCV (C++)

    - by typoknig
    Hi all, I am working on an OpenCV project and I need to compare some images after canny has been applied to both of them. Before the canny was applied I had the gray scale images populating a histogram and then I compared the histograms, but when canny is added to the images the histogram does not populate. I have read that a canny image can populate a histogram, but have not found a way to make it happen. I do not necessairly need to keep using the histograms, I just want to know the best way to compare two canny images. SSCCE below for you to chew on. I have poached and patched about 75% of this code from books and various sites on the internet, so props to those guys... // SLC (Histogram).cpp : Defines the entry point for the console application. #include "stdafx.h" #include <cxcore.h> #include <cv.h> #include <cvaux.h> #include <highgui.h> #include <stdio.h> #include <sstream> #include <iostream> using namespace std; • How can I fix my program from crashing in C++?

    - by Rachel
    I'm very new to programming and I am trying to write a program that adds and subtracts polynomials. My program sometimes works, but most of the time, it randomly crashes and I have no idea why. It's very buggy and has other problems I'm trying to fix, but I am unable to really get any further coding done since it crashes. I'm completely new here but any help would be greatly appreciated. Here's the code: #include <iostream> #include <cstdlib> using namespace std; int getChoice(void); class Polynomial10 { private: double* coef; int degreePoly; public: Polynomial10(int max); //Constructor for a new Polynomial10 int getDegree(){return degreePoly;}; void print(); //Print the polynomial in standard form void read(); //Read a polynomial from the user void add(const Polynomial10& pol); //Add a polynomial void multc(double factor); //Multiply the poly by scalar void subtract(const Polynomial10& pol); //Subtract polynom }; void Polynomial10::read() { cout << "Enter degree of a polynom between 1 and 10 : "; cin >> degreePoly; cout << "Enter space separated coefficients starting from highest degree" << endl; for (int i = 0; i <= degreePoly; i++) { cin >> coef[i]; } } void Polynomial10::print() { for(int i=0;i<=degreePoly;i++) { if(coef[i] == 0) { cout << ""; } else if(i>=0) { if(coef[i] > 0 && i!=0) { cout<<"+"; } if((coef[i] != 1 && coef[i] != -1) || i == degreePoly) { cout << coef[i]; } if((coef[i] != 1 && coef[i] != -1) && i!=degreePoly ) { cout << "*"; } if (i != degreePoly && coef[i] == -1) { cout << "-"; } if(i != degreePoly) { cout << "x"; } if ((degreePoly - i) != 1 && i != degreePoly) { cout << "^"; cout << degreePoly-i; } } } } void Polynomial10::add(const Polynomial10& pol) { for(int i = 0; i<degreePoly; i++) { int degree = degreePoly; coef[degreePoly-i] += pol.coef[degreePoly-(i+1)]; } } void Polynomial10::subtract(const Polynomial10& pol) { for(int i = 0; i<degreePoly; i++) { coef[degreePoly-i] -= pol.coef[degreePoly-(i+1)]; } } void Polynomial10::multc(double factor) { //int degreePoly=0; //double coef[degreePoly]; cout << "Enter the scalar multiplier : "; cin >> factor; for(int i = 0; i<degreePoly; i++) { coef[i] *= factor; } }; Polynomial10::Polynomial10(int max) { degreePoly=max; coef = new double[degreePoly]; for(int i; i<degreePoly; i++) { coef[i] = 0; } } int main() { int choice; Polynomial10 p1(1),p2(1); cout << endl << "CGS 2421: The Polynomial10 Class" << endl << endl << endl; cout << "0. Today we released the v2.1 update of the Windows Azure SDK for .NET.  This is a major refresh of the Windows Azure SDK and it includes some great new features and enhancements. These new capabilities include: Visual Studio 2013 Preview Support: The Windows Azure SDK now supports using the new VS 2013 Preview Visual Studio 2013 VM Image: Windows Azure now has a built-in VM image that you can use to host and develop with VS 2013 in the cloud Visual Studio Server Explorer Enhancements: Redesigned with improved filtering and auto-loading of subscription resources Virtual Machines: Start and Stop VM’s w/suspend billing directly from within Visual Studio Cloud Services: New Emulator Express option with reduced footprint and Run as Normal User support Service Bus: New high availability options, Notification Hub support, Improved VS tooling PowerShell Automation: Lots of new PowerShell commands for automating Web Sites, Cloud Services, VMs and more All of these SDK enhancements are now available to start using immediately and you can download the SDK from the Windows Azure .NET Developer Center.  Visual Studio’s Team Foundation Service (http://tfs.visualstudio.com/) has also been updated to support today’s SDK 2.1 release, and the SDK 2.1 features can now be used with it (including with automated builds + tests). Below are more details on the new features and capabilities released today: Visual Studio 2013 Preview Support Today’s Window Azure SDK 2.1 release adds support for the recent Visual Studio 2013 Preview. The 2.1 SDK also works with Visual Studio 2010 and Visual Studio 2012, and works side by side with the previous Windows Azure SDK 1.8 and 2.0 releases. To install the Windows Azure SDK 2.1 on your local computer, choose the “install the sdk” link from the Windows Azure .NET Developer Center. Then, chose which version of Visual Studio you want to use it with.  Clicking the third link will install the SDK with the latest VS 2013 Preview: If you don’t already have the Visual Studio 2013 Preview installed on your machine, this will also install Visual Studio Express 2013 Preview for Web. Visual Studio 2013 VM Image Hosted in the Cloud One of the requests we’ve heard from several customers has been to have the ability to host Visual Studio within the cloud (avoiding the need to install anything locally on your computer). With today’s SDK update we’ve added a new VM image to the Windows Azure VM Gallery that has Visual Studio Ultimate 2013 Preview, SharePoint 2013, SQL Server 2012 Express and the Windows Azure 2.1 SDK already installed on it.  This provides a really easy way to create a development environment in the cloud with the latest tools. With the recent shutdown and suspend billing feature we shipped on Windows Azure last month, you can spin up the image only when you want to do active development, and then shut down the virtual machine and not have to worry about usage charges while the virtual machine is not in use. You can create your own VS image in the cloud by using the New->Compute->Virtual Machine->From Gallery menu within the Windows Azure Management Portal, and then by selecting the “Visual Studio Ultimate 2013 Preview” template: Visual Studio Server Explorer: Improved Filtering/Management of Subscription Resources With the Windows Azure SDK 2.1 release you’ll notice significant improvements in the Visual Studio Server Explorer. The explorer has been redesigned so that all Windows Azure services are now contained under a single Windows Azure node.  From the top level node you can now manage your Windows Azure credentials, import a subscription file or filter Server Explorer to only show services from particular subscriptions or regions. Note: The Web Sites and Mobile Services nodes will appear outside the Windows Azure Node until the final release of VS 2013. If you have installed the ASP.NET and Web Tools Preview Refresh, though, the Web Sites node will appear inside the Windows Azure node even with the VS 2013 Preview. Once your subscription information is added, Windows Azure services from all your subscriptions are automatically enumerated in the Server Explorer. You no longer need to manually add services to Server Explorer individually. This provides a convenient way of viewing all of your cloud services, storage accounts, service bus namespaces, virtual machines, and web sites from one location: Subscription and Region Filtering Support Using the Windows Azure node in Server Explorer, you can also now filter your Windows Azure services in the Server Explorer by the subscription or region they are in.  If you have multiple subscriptions but need to focus your attention to just a few subscription for some period of time, this a handy way to hide the services from other subscriptions view until they become relevant. You can do the same sort of filtering by region. To enable this, just select “Filter Services” from the context menu on the Windows Azure node: Then choose the subscriptions and/or regions you want to filter by. In the below example, I’ve decided to show services from my pay-as-you-go subscription within the East US region: Visual Studio will then automatically filter the items that show up in the Server Explorer appropriately: With storage accounts and service bus namespaces, you sometimes need to work with services outside your subscription. To accommodate that scenario, those services allow you to attach an external account (from the context menu). You’ll notice that external accounts have a slightly different icon in server explorer to indicate they are from outside your subscription. Other Improvements We’ve also improved the Server Explorer by adding additional properties and actions to the service exposed. You now have access to most of the properties on a cloud service, deployment slot, role or role instance as well as the properties on storage accounts, virtual machines and web sites. Just select the object of interest in Server Explorer and view the properties in the property pane. We also now have full support for creating/deleting/update storage tables, blobs and queues from directly within Server Explorer.  Simply right-click on the appropriate storage account node and you can create them directly within Visual Studio: Virtual Machines: Start/Stop within Visual Studio Virtual Machines now have context menu actions that allow you start, shutdown, restart and delete a Virtual Machine directly within the Visual Studio Server Explorer. The shutdown action enables you to shut down the virtual machine and suspend billing when the VM is not is use, and easily restart it when you need it: This is especially useful in Dev/Test scenarios where you can start a VM – such as a SQL Server – during your development session and then shut it down / suspend billing when you are not developing (and no longer be billed for it). You can also now directly remote desktop into VMs using the “Connect using Remote Desktop” context menu command in VS Server Explorer.  Cloud Services: Emulator Express with Run as Normal User Support You can now launch Visual Studio and run your cloud services locally as a Normal User (without having to elevate to an administrator account) using a new Emulator Express option included as a preview feature with this SDK release.  Emulator Express is a version of the Windows Azure Compute Emulator that runs a restricted mode – one instance per role – and it doesn’t require administrative permissions and uses 40% less resources than the full Windows Azure Emulator. Emulator Express supports both web and worker roles. To run your application locally using the Emulator Express option, simply change the following settings in the Windows Azure project. On the shortcut menu for the Windows Azure project, choose Properties, and then choose the Web tab. Check the setting for IIS (Internet Information Services). Make sure that the option is set to IIS Express, not the full version of IIS. Emulator Express is not compatible with full IIS. On the Web tab, choose the option for Emulator Express. Service Bus: Notification Hubs With the Windows Azure SDK 2.1 release we are adding support for Windows Azure Notification Hubs as part of our official Windows Azure SDK, inside of Microsoft.ServiceBus.dll (previously the Notification Hub functionality was in a preview assembly). You are now able to create, update and delete Notification Hubs programmatically, manage your device registrations, and send push notifications to all your mobile clients across all platforms (Windows Store, Windows Phone 8, iOS, and Android). Learn more about Notification Hubs on MSDN here, or watch the Notification Hubs //BUILD/ presentation here. Service Bus: Paired Namespaces One of the new features included with today’s Windows Azure SDK 2.1 release is support for Service Bus “Paired Namespaces”.  Paired Namespaces enable you to better handle situations where a Service Bus service namespace becomes unavailable (for example: due to connectivity issues or an outage) and you are unable to send or receive messages to the namespace hosting the queue, topic, or subscription. Previously,to handle this scenario you had to manually setup separate namespaces that can act as a backup, then implement manual failover and retry logic which was sometimes tricky to get right. Service Bus now supports Paired Namespaces, which enables you to connect two namespaces together. When you activate the secondary namespace, messages are stored in the secondary queue for delivery to the primary queue at a later time. If the primary container (namespace) becomes unavailable for some reason, automatic failover enables the messages in the secondary queue. For detailed information about paired namespaces and high availability, see the new topic Asynchronous Messaging Patterns and High Availability. Service Bus: Tooling Improvements In this release, the Windows Azure Tools for Visual Studio contain several enhancements and changes to the management of Service Bus messaging entities using Visual Studio’s Server Explorer. The most noticeable change is that the Service Bus node is now integrated into the Windows Azure node, and supports integrated subscription management. Additionally, there has been a change to the code generated by the Windows Azure Worker Role with Service Bus Queue project template. This code now uses an event-driven “message pump” programming model using the QueueClient.OnMessage method. PowerShell: Tons of New Automation Commands Since my last blog post on the previous Windows Azure SDK 2.0 release, we’ve updated Windows Azure PowerShell (which is a separate download) five times. You can find the full change log here. We’ve added new cmdlets in the following areas: China instance and Windows Azure Pack support Environment Configuration VMs Cloud Services Web Sites Storage SQL Azure Service Bus China Instance and Windows Azure Pack We now support the following cmdlets for the China instance and Windows Azure Pack, respectively: China Instance: Web Sites, Service Bus, Storage, Cloud Service, VMs, Network Windows Azure Pack: Web Sites, Service Bus We will have full cmdlet support for these two Windows Azure environments in PowerShell in the near future. Virtual Machines: Stop/Start Virtual Machines Similar to the Start/Stop VM capability in VS Server Explorer, you can now stop your VM and suspend billing: If you want to keep the original behavior of keeping your stopped VM provisioned, you can pass in the -StayProvisioned switch parameter. Virtual Machines: VM endpoint ACLs We’ve added and updated a bunch of cmdlets for you to configure fine-grained network ACL on your VM endpoints. You can use the following cmdlets to create ACL config and apply them to a VM endpoint: New-AzureAclConfig Get-AzureAclConfig Set-AzureAclConfig Remove-AzureAclConfig Add-AzureEndpoint -ACL Set-AzureEndpoint –ACL The following example shows how to add an ACL rule to an existing endpoint of a VM. Other improvements for Virtual Machine management includes Added -NoWinRMEndpoint parameter to New-AzureQuickVM and Add-AzureProvisioningConfig to disable Windows Remote Management Added -DirectServerReturn parameter to Add-AzureEndpoint and Set-AzureEndpoint to enable/disable direct server return Added Set-AzureLoadBalancedEndpoint cmdlet to modify load balanced endpoints Cloud Services: Remote Desktop and Diagnostics Remote Desktop and Diagnostics are popular debugging options for Cloud Services. We’ve introduced cmdlets to help you configure these two Cloud Service extensions from Windows Azure PowerShell. Windows Azure Cloud Services Remote Desktop extension: New-AzureServiceRemoteDesktopExtensionConfig Get-AzureServiceRemoteDesktopExtension Set-AzureServiceRemoteDesktopExtension Remove-AzureServiceRemoteDesktopExtension Windows Azure Cloud Services Diagnostics extension New-AzureServiceDiagnosticsExtensionConfig Get-AzureServiceDiagnosticsExtension Set-AzureServiceDiagnosticsExtension Remove-AzureServiceDiagnosticsExtension The following example shows how to enable Remote Desktop for a Cloud Service. Web Sites: Diagnostics With our last SDK update, we introduced the Get-AzureWebsiteLog –Tail cmdlet to get the log streaming of your Web Sites. Recently, we’ve also added cmdlets to configure Web Site application diagnostics: Enable-AzureWebsiteApplicationDiagnostic Disable-AzureWebsiteApplicationDiagnostic The following 2 examples show how to enable application diagnostics to the file system and a Windows Azure Storage Table: SQL Database Previously, you had to know the SQL Database server admin username and password if you want to manage the database in that SQL Database server. Recently, we’ve made the experience much easier by not requiring the admin credential if the database server is in your subscription. So you can simply specify the -ServerName parameter to tell Windows Azure PowerShell which server you want to use for the following cmdlets. Get-AzureSqlDatabase New-AzureSqlDatabase Remove-AzureSqlDatabase Set-AzureSqlDatabase We’ve also added a -AllowAllAzureServices parameter to New-AzureSqlDatabaseServerFirewallRule so that you can easily add a firewall rule to whitelist all Windows Azure IP addresses. Besides the above experience improvements, we’ve also added cmdlets get the database server quota and set the database service objective. Check out the following cmdlets for details. Get-AzureSqlDatabaseServerQuota Get-AzureSqlDatabaseServiceObjective Set-AzureSqlDatabase –ServiceObjective Storage and Service Bus Other new cmdlets include Storage: CRUD cmdlets for Azure Tables and Queues Service Bus: Cmdlets for managing authorization rules on your Service Bus Namespace, Queue, Topic, Relay and NotificationHub Summary Today’s release includes a bunch of great features that enable you to build even better cloud solutions.  All the above features/enhancements are shipped and available to use immediately as part of the 2.1 release of the Windows Azure SDK for .NET. If you don’t already have a Windows Azure account, you can sign-up for a free trial and start using all of the above features today.  Then visit the Windows Azure Developer Center to learn more about how to build apps with it.
