  • Guidelines for creating a programming-language enjoyable to write programs in?

    I'm currently working on the topic of programming-languages and interpreter-design. I have already created several programming languages but couldn't reach my goal so far: Create a programming-language which focuses on giving the programmer a good feeling when writing code in it. It should just be fun and/or interesting and in no case annoying to write something in it. I get this feeling when writing code in Python. I sometimes get the opposite with PHP and in rare cases when having to reinvent some wheel in C++. So I've tried to figure out some syntactical features to make programming in my new language fun, but I just can't find any. Which concrete features, maybe mainly in terms of syntax, do/could make programming in a language fun? Examples: I find it enjoyable to program in Ruby because of it's use of code blocks. It would be nice if you could include exactly one example in your answer Those features do not have to already exist in any language! I'm doing this because I have experienced extreme rises in (my own) productivity when programming in languages I love (because of particular features).

  • Acer aspire 5735z wireless not working after upgrade to 11.10

    I cant get my wifi card to work at all after upgrading to 11.10 Oneiric. I'm not sure where to start to fix this. Ive tried using the additional drivers tool but this shows that no additional drivers are needed. Before my upgrade I had a drivers working for the Rt2860 chipset.     Using Chrome 15 on Windows (all tho' I've learned it doesn't matter what browser you use), when using a Google product it automatically either translates or redirects to my native language. If I go google.com, I excpect to get the English version of it - that does not happen, instead I have to click on the bottom of the page on the link "Go to Google MyLanguage" and it still does the same thing after closing and opening the browser. Hence my question, how to disable (get rid of, for good) Google's language detection? Maybe there's a work-around?

  • Which upgrade path for disk IO bound postgres server?

    Hi all, We currently have a Sun x4270 with 2xquad core Xeon Nehalmen 2.93ghz cores (16 threads), 72 gig of ram and 16 x 10k SAS disks split between the os raid 1, a partition for the Write Ahead Logs which is raid 10 and a partition for the database tables and indexes which is also raid 10, all xfs. I'm currently evaluating which path to go down in terms of upgrades. We'll be sharding the DB at some point soon, but for now I need to focus on hardware upgrades specifically. The machine is not CPU or memory bound at all at the moment, just IOWait is become an issue. The machine is mostly write access as we have a heavy caching layer. We're seeing about 300 write IOPS average on both the database partitions. We don't have any additional storage infrastructure like a Fiber Channel or ISCSI network. Budget isn't too much of a concern, something inline with the size of this server (i.e no $1m IBM machines) Space is ok on the DB side of things, we're running out obviously but there's also some reduction we can do. Additional space would be good though. My current thoughts are either: * ISCSI SAN, possible with 10Gbit network that has solid state acceleration. * FusionIO card / Sun F20 card (will the FusionIO card work in the Sun box? * DAS shelf (something like this http://www.broadberry.co.uk/das-direct-attached-storage-servers/cyberstore-224s-das) which a combination of 15k sas disks and some Intel X25-E drives for DB indexes etc) what would I need to put in the x4270 to add a DAS shelf? I think it's a SAS HBA card, do I have to use Sun's own card or will any PCI Express card work? Anything else??? what would you guys do from your experience? I appreciate it's a lot of questions, but I haven't expanded a DB machine for a number of years and the landscape has changed dramatically since then!     My root problem is that when using calls Dispose on a StreamWriter, it also disposes the BaseStream (same problem with Close). I have a workaround for this, but as you can see it involves copying the stream. Is there any way to do this without copying the stream? The purpose of this is to get the contents of a string (originally read from a database) into a stream, so the stream can be read by a third party component.   • How do I get events to execute on the "main thread"

    I have 2 classes, one is frmMain a windows form and the other is a class in vb.NET 2003. frmMain contains a start button which executes the monitor function in the other class. My question is, I am manually adding the event handlers -- when the events are executed how do I get them to excute on the "main thread". Because when the tooltip balloon pops up at the tray icon it displays a second tray icon instead of popping up at the existing tray icon. I can confirm that this is because the events are firing on new threads because if I try to display a balloon tooltip from frmMain it will display on the existing tray icon. I shared my output folder (WITHOUT allowing network users to change my files) and ran my exe from another Vista computer on our intranet. When running the shared exe, I receive "System.UnauthorizedAccessException" when trying to read a file. How can I give permission to allow reading the file? Should I change the code? Should I grant permission to the application\folder on the Vista computer? how? Notes: I do not use ClickOnce. the application should be distributed using xcopy.     I've created an experimental toy programming language with a (now) working interpreter. It is turing-complete and has a pretty low-level instruction set. Even if everything takes four to six times more code and time than in PHP, Python or Ruby I still love programming all kinds of things in it. So I got the "basic" things that are written in many languages working: Hello World Input - Output Countdowns (not as easy as you think as there are no loops) Factorials Array emulation 99 Bottles of Beer (simple, wrong inflection) 99 Bottles of Beer (canonical) Conjatz conjecture Quine (that was a fun one!) Brainf*ck interpreter (To proof turing-completeness, made me happy) So I implemented all of the above examples because: They all used many different aspects of the language They are pretty interesting They don't take hours to write Now my problem is: I've run out of ideas! I don't find any more examples of what problems I could solve using my language. Do you have any programming problems which fit into some of the criteria above for me to work out?

    The question was imagined after a co-worker was complaining for an hour about some guy who could not answer basic Java questions on an interview after self-identifying himself as "8 out of 10" on Java. While that was an obvious fib, I personally always had major trouble defining my specific language skills on a sliding scale unless I'm given specific guidelines (remember 40 standard libraries by heart? Able to solve 10 random Project Euler problems in <30 mins each? Can write implementation of A, B and C data-structures from scratch in 30 mins? Know 30% of standard? Can answer 50% of questions on StackOverflow pertaining to the language?) So, I was wondering - is there some sort of commonly accepted methodology for translating such tangible benchmarks into "rate yourself on a language between 1-10"? "Kernighan gets an A, God gets a B, everyone else gets C and less" type jokes are not helpful :)

    I am already working on some software in Python but I'm having one of those days where I step back and reflect just to make sure I'm not spinning my wheels. I know that Twitter launched with RoR because it was fast to build. Then they almost moved into another language in 2008 because of scalability issues. This has caused me to step back and introspect for a moment to make sure I'm heading down the right path. I've read in some tutorials and other places that Python is "a great first language" or a "nice beginner language" as though it's not capable of larger tasks. I look at it as Python can do what Java or ASP can but with about 1/4th of the code, not to mention I don't have to build or compile, etc. I've read that Java runs quite a few times faster than Python which is important of course, but then I read everywhere that hardware keeps getting cheaper and there are projects like Unladen Swallow by Google to make Python faster. Should I be concerned or is this just the remnants of Java developers?

    There is an uncountable sum of programming languages out there. They obviously all have their pro's and con's - but why can't there be one to "beat them all"? The main part of a programming language is it's syntax and what's possible with it. The rest are usually only a bunch of libraries, frameworks and extensions wrapped around it. So couldn't you combine all the great aspects and experiences gained from the thousands of programming languages out there to build one with a syntax that fits every task? Wouldn't it be better having only one programming language? I see only problems with the current amount of the ones in use. Why can't there be a perfect language when thinking of syntax, constructs and typing?

  • What language should I write my 2D game in? [closed]

    I'm thinking of writing a game. It's inspired by Minecraft/Terraria (but don't worry it will be different). My main question is what language I should write it in -- it'll be relatively simple graphics, more like Terraria than Minecraft. I know Java relatively well and Minecraft is written in it, but C++ seems like the industry standard for game development. However, I know next to no C++. I'm willing to learn but am worried how it will turn out for my first real project in the language. In addition to that, I'd also like suggestions on a good game engine for the language that you suggest. I'd like it to run on: Windows for sure Linux for sure Mac for sure Android would be really nice iOS is optional Thank you in advance!

  • Why does first call to java.io.File.createTempFile(String,String,File) take 5 seconds on Citrix?

    While debugging slow startup of an Eclipse RCP app on a Citrix server, I came to find out that java.io.createTempFile(String,String,File) is taking 5 seconds. It does this only on the first execution and only for certain user accounts. Specifically, I am noticing it Citrix anonymous user accounts. I have not tried many other types of accounts, but this behavior is not exhibited with an administrator account. Also, it does not matter if the user has access to write to the given directory or not. If the user does not have access, the call will take 5 seconds to fail. If they do have access, the call with take 5 seconds to succeed. This is on a Windows 2003 Server. I've tried Sun's 1.6.0_16 and 1.6.0_19 JREs and see the same behavior. I googled a bit expecting this to be some sort of known issue, but didn't find anything. It seems like someone else would have had to have run into this before. The Eclipse Platform uses File.createTempFile() to test various directories to see if they are writeable during initialization and this issue adds 5 seconds to the startup time of our application. I imagine somebody has run into this before and might have some insight. Here is sample code I executed to see that it is indeed this call that is consuming the time.
