• Switching from web to desktop development

  Being a web developer (php, symfony, doctrine) for 2 years now, I was recently asked by a friend to come up with a desktop solution. So I developed a project, installed a LAMP on his machine and he is mostly happy using it now. But I'm not. It just doesn't seem right to wait for a server response from a localhost. Obviously php isn't suited for desktop development. So, my question is: what language \ framework would you advice a php programmer if he was going to develop a desktop application (something that you can install, that has it's own gui, but utilizes the similar concepts of web apps: css, javascript, orm). I would like to bring up Python as a possible answer to my question. Does anyone have an experience of developing a desktop app with Python, utilizing an ORM and(or) HTML-based GUI?

• In which DLL is the COM interface iStream defined?

  I'm a complete newbie to Windows and COM programming, trying to use com4j in order to call a COM object from Java. Com4j generates Java interfaces from COM definitions "often found in .ocx, .dll, .exe, and/or .tlb files" . It was easy for me to locate the .ocx file of my target COM object, but I have no clue regarding the standard interface iStream. Microsoft's documentation mentions OLE32.DLL ( c:\Windows\Windows32\Ole32.dll ?) , but neither the com4j generator nor oleviewer succeed in opening this file. Any hints?

• Tips on deploying Ror

  How can I go about deploying a Rails app on a cluster of Amazon EC2 servers? Any recommended guides? I maintain a RoR app (currently hosted on Heroku) that uses a DB and DelayedJobs). The app has a large footprint, and needs to be distributed on a cluster most likely. Any tips would be appreciated. Are there Amazon AMIs that replicate some of Heroku's features (especially DJ)? P.S. I'm quite a Ruby newbie.

  I am working on x86_64 machine. My linux kernel is also 64 bit kernel. As there are different ways to implement a system call (int 80, syscall, sysenter), i wanted to know what type of system call my machine is using. I am newbie to linux. I have written a demo program. include int main() { getpid(); return 0; } getpid() does one system call.   Hi, I 'm a iphone programming newbie. I m trying to implement an app with multi-level tableviews. The idea is if someone selects something on the first screen say then a new view opens(tableview) car make> list of models Honda > Acura, S2000,accord ... My challenge is to show the list of models in a new tableview & secondly change the size of hte list depending on the car selected. I have programmed so that when i select 'Honda' a new tableview opens. How do i populate data for the second table?? Any suggestions on how to proceed? thanks

• How to keep an old VB6 application running in Windows Vista and Windows 7?

  I have an old VB6 app which I'm still trying to support. A few users have reported weird crashes when running the app in Vista or Windows 7. The log files don't show anything after one of these crashes, but the customers report that the error message said "OLE something ...", if they saw anything at all. I've never been able to reproduce these crashes while running the program on my own Vista or Windows 7 boxes, so I have essentially no information on what the problem is. My suspicion is that it's a problem with their versions of one or more of the umpteen billion DLLs that a VB6 application is dependent on. The app also uses lame_enc.dll, which introduces a few more dependencies. I'm guessing this is a common problem with VB6 apps (although it's possible that I just sucked as a programmer 10 years ago). Is there some magical installer/updater out there that makes sure all the VB6 dependencies are what they need to be for a VB6 app to function properly?

• mvc2 validation problem (ambiguous reference between model and models)

  I followed instructions for mvc validation but I can't manage to solve this problem.... This is linq to sql model: I set Entity namespace to be CMS.Model If I try to declare partial class Article in Portal.Models namespace: public partial class Article { .... } Then, after using Article article somewhere in code I get following error: 'Article' is an ambiguous reference between 'Portal.Models.Article' and 'CMS.Model.Article' Portal is project name and CMS is area.... I followed these instructions I aslo created NerdDinner from scratch and in that example validation works. I can't figure out what am I doing wrong... someone noticed my mistake? Is it related with giving name to Entity namespace (in tutorial they used default one) Thanks in advance! PS I'd like to note that I'm c# newbie so I'm not really familiar with these partial classes

• Is it feasible to write a Firefox plugin to make use of ActiveX control on Windows?

  I use an ActiveX control called TAPIEx enabling TAPI phone system integration using MS Access 2000 (+Visual Basic). I want to turn this Access database into a web app with the clients running Firefox (all on internal network). Since Firefox doesnt support ActiveX is it feasible for me to write a Firefox plugin that in turn utilizes the ActiveX control? With regard to how plugins work - Would I be able to call 'functions' of the plugin from page script (eg dial call specifying phone number, check if calls in process)? Would adding these functions to the Firefox right click menu 'globally' inside Firefox be easier? Hope you guys can help. Note I'm not a fulltime programmer; I just need to know how steep the learning curve will be or even if my idea is possible! • gcc-4.2 failed with exit code 1 iphone

  Hi, I've seen this error with different variations on discussion forums but being a non programmer I'm not sure how to progress this. Basically I have code which I found to help me with changing the background colors of cells on a grouped uitableview. The code introduced a line as such: CGContextAddArcToPoint(c, minx, miny, midx, miny, ROUND_SIZE); This gave an error indicated that it wasn't declared, so I added to my .h file the following under import uikit: #import <UIKit/UIKit.h> #define ROUND_SIZE 10 Now it shows that I have an error: Command/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/usr/bin/gcc-4.2 failed with exit code 1 iphone Some discussions talk about libraries but because I don't have a programming background I don't understand what to do. I also see that some people show a log output but I'm not sure where that comes from as I don't get any debug windows because I'm guessing it doesn't get that far. I simply click 'Build and Go' and I get this error in the Message window. Any thoughts?

• Multiple video overlay - need advice

  Hi, I'm working on a project and I need some advice. Just some background, Im not a programmer though at times I do some fiddling and I am generally comfortable with more specific terms. Now for the actual issue, I have a folder with 10 small videos (4/7 secs max each) and I would like to display them full screen looping and overlaid.   Hi, I have a newbie question regarding when to release the elements of a NSArray. See following pseudo code: NSMutalbeArray *2DArray = [[NSMutableArray alloc] initWithCapacity:10]; for (int i=0;i<10;i++) { NSMutableArray *array = [[MSMutableArray alloc] initWithCapacity:5]; for (int j=0;j<5;j++) { MyObject *obj = [[MyObject alloc] init]; [array addObject:obj]; [obj release]; } [2DArray addObject:array]; [array release]; } // use 2DArray to do something [2DArray release] My question here is, when I release 2DArray, do I need to explicitly release each of its element (array) first? Also, before I release the "array" object, do I need to release each of its element (MyObject) first? I am new to Objective C. Please help. thanks.

Or see what Gregory House (TV show "House M.D.") does when he is thinking. But what about the other places where you are the only programmer? If you don't stare at boring stuff on the monitor for 8 hours straight, co-workers suspect you being a slacker. Yes, not the managers who see the output. Only the co-workers who see the process and can't relate to this kind of work. Yesterday I had to explain to a trainee of some other profession that software development is like flying. The explanation from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I don't think she bought it.

• Space-based architecture?

  One chapter in Pragmatic Programmer recommends looking at a blackboard/space-based architecture + a rules engine as a more flexible alternative to a traditional workflow system. The project I'm working on currently uses a workflow engine, but I'd like to evaluate alternatives. I really feel like a SBA would be a better solution to our business problems, but I'm worried about a total lack of community support/user base/venders/options. JavaSpaces is dead, and the JINI spin-off Apache River seems to be on life support. SemiSpace looks perfect, but it's a one-man show. The only viable solution seems to be GigaSpaces. I'd like to hear your thoughts on space based architecture and any experiences you've had with real world implementations.

• Are there such things as summer jobs for teenage programmers?

  I've taken programming as a hobby, studying it since I was 10 or so. 7 years to date, I've become progressivly good at C++, PHP, C#, Assembly, Lua, and the web languages such as HTML and CSS. Though I've never taken a class, I've been able to complete most, if not all of the questions from different "Programmer Interview Questions" articles and have participated in some small scale projects in the past. Summer starting yesterday for me, I've been thinking about how to keep busy while maybe earning some money along the way. Now, some kids mow lawns, others get fast food jobs, but what about programming jobs? Is there even such a thing?

  Hi all, Am a newbie to iphone programming. i have a input box and the user can write his DOB(mm/dd/yyyy) into the box. Before i save the data i like to test for valid input. I am using Regexlite.h and Regexlite.m.i have the regular expression too. i want to compare the regex to the user entered value in text box.But am not knowing how to do it.Please help.   Hi, I am a newbie in amazon ec2 setup. I have now setup a machine to my taste - and I now want to bundle it. I am running the following command from the launched instance - root@domU-21-34-67-26-ED-Z4:~# ec2-bundle-vol -r i386 -d /mnt \ -p ACT-VOL -u 8940-1355-4155 -k /tmp/pk-key.pem \ -c /tmp/cert.pem -s 10240 \ -e /mnt,/root/.ssh,/home/ubuntu/.ssh ruby: No such file or directory -- /home/ubuntu/ec2tools/ec2-api-tools-1.3-46266/lib/ec2/amitools/bundlevol.rb (LoadError) The ruby version is 1.8.7. I searched internet and installed libruby1.8-extras etc too, but to no avail. I also tried running it from site_ruby (/usr/local/lib/site_ruby) - but no use. I tried installing 1.8.6 version of ruby, but was unable to find a way to do so too. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, K

• Best way for programmers to edit XAML

  I was wondering how programmers chose to edit XAML. Most of the programmers I speak to seem to edit the raw XML, but that seems nuts to me since it is such a natural thing for a more visual editor (of course you often have to get down to the raw code ultimately, but isn't there a better way to lay out a grid, or edit a template, or add non c# triggers or manage commands? The one that really set me off was editing a menu -- Visual Studio 1.0 had a better menu editor for C++ than the raw XAML editing experience.) When I edit .aspx files I use a visual editor much of the time, and then for the raw stuff I get into the html code. I am aware of Expression Blend, but that seems far more focused on artistic types and GUI experts rather than programmers. Does anyone have recommendations for a better editor for XAML than VS? Especially so since VS seems to have real nasty problems with XAML editing too, like bugginess and poor performance? Appreciate your helping this XAML newbie.

  I am trying to implement a linux shell that supports piping. I have already done simple commands, commands running in background, redirections, but piping is still missing. I have already read about it and seen some snippets of code, but still haven't been able to sort out a working solution. So, before being able to implement three and more different commands in pipeline, I would like to be able to compute "ls names.txt | sort" or something similiar, in which names.txt is a file of names alfabetically unordered. • Is it acceptible to expect mentoring to replace many years experience?

  Hi all Just a quick question Here's my situation: I've been maintaining, extending and creating websites against a CMS for the last 18 months In that time I've learnt a LOT more about ASP.Net, javascript, and of course the quirks of the CMS we are using My manager wants to get others involved, and I'm expected to mentor another programmer whilst they work on production code Now, I've got no problem mentoring someone and it would be great for me to not be the only one with the skillset. But what I HAVE got a problem with is mentoring someone within an agreed timescale of the piece of work (10 days in this case) AND expected to deliver the product to the same standard. I guess what I'm getting at is: 18 months experience != a few days mentoring, not to mention the level of C#/.Net/ASP.Net/Javascript required may also not be up to scratch. Am I right to think this is a little, wrong?

• Django : proper way to use model, duplicates!

  Hello, I have a question about the proper, best way to manage the model. I am relative newbie to django, so I think I need to read more docs, tutorials,etc (suggestions for this would be cool!). Anyway, this is my question : I have a python web crawler, that is "connected" with django model. Crawling is done once a day, so its really common to find "duplicates". To avoid duplicates I do this : cars = Car.Objects.filter(name=crawledItem['name']) if len(cars) 0: #object already exists, update it car = cars[0] else: car = Car() #some non-relevant code here car.save() I want to know, if this is the proper/correct way to do it or its any "automatic" way to do it. Its possible to put the logic inside the Car() constructor also, should I do that? Thanks a lot!

• To be effective on your home projects is it better using the same technologies used at work?

  To be more productive and effective, is it better to start developing an home project using the same technologies used at work? I'm not talking about a simple hello world web page but an home project with all bells and whistles that one day, maybe, you could sell on internet. This dilemma is often subject of flames between me and a friend. He thinks that if you want to make a great home-made project you need to use the same technologies used daily at work staying in the same scope too; for example, a c++ computer game programmer should develope an home-made c++ game. I'm pretty sure that developing using the same technologies used at work can be more productive at beginning, but surely less exciting and stimulating of working with other languages\ides\libraries out of your daily job. What's your opinion about that?
