• How can i set isdigit() command as a variable?

  I'm new to python but I caught on to the basics pretty quick and decided to start trying to make a program while I'm still learning, since I learn best by actually doing things. So I'm making a program in python that will add polynomials and I need to see if a character from the parser is numeric im using the isdigit() command. Instead of having to type isdigit() all the time in my code such as n.isdigit(), I want to assign it to a variable t = 'isdigit()' and then type n.t. This doesn't work, so is there an alternative to not typing the whole command?

• Show surrounding words when searching for a specific word in a text file (Ruby)

  Hi, I'm very new to ruby. I'm trying to search for any instance of a word in a text file (not the problem). Then when the word is discovered, it would show the surrounding text (maybe 3-4 words before and after the target word, instead of the whole line), output to a list of instances and continue searching. Example "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog." Search word = "jumped" Output = "...brown fox jumped over the..." Any help is appreciated. Thanks! • Sending bulk notification emails without blocking

  For my client's custom-built CRM, I want users (technicians) to be notified of changes to marked cases via email. This warrants a simple subscription mapping table between users and cases and automated emails to be sent every time a change is made to a case from within the logging method. How do I send 10-100 emails to subscribed users without bogging down my logging method? My SMTP server is on a peer on my LAN, so sends should be quick, but ideally this should be handled by an external queuing process. I can have a cron job send any outstanding emails every 10 minutes, but for this specific client cases are quite time-sensitive and instant notification (as instant as email can be) would be great. How can I send bulk notification emails from within ASP.NET MVC without bogging down my logging method?

  I've a project that connects to a dBase format database file, that I've always done in the past with a connection string of the form of: PROVIDER=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=MyData.dbf;Extended Properties=dBASE 5.0 I've had to revisit this recently, and have found that when attempting to create an OleDbConnection with that connection string on x64 machines, that have an x86 install of Office on it, it throws an exception. A quick hack of a fix shows that forcing the application to target x86 only makes it work, but I was hoping to be able to tidy this up and check in advance whether it would fail to create the connection, so that I could customise my import options to suit the available providers. Is it possible to enumerate the available data providers for the current processor architecture? (other than relying on catching the exception -- after all, the Framework Design Guidelines suggest that you should only throw in exceptional circumstances, and you have a method to check if something would throw an exception)

Error: undefined method `name' for nil:NilClass. Here's my reasoning. The parameter :id is coming from my url path (i.e. we're looking for customer #3 in the above path). @customer should find that array easily, then @customer.name should produce the name, but apparently @customer is blank. Why? I assume the problem is that I'm not producing an array in my controller?

• How to suppress javascript errors for sites I'm not developing?

  I like to keep javascript debugging enabled in my browser so when I'm developing my own code I can instantly see when I've made an error. Of course this means I see errors on apple.com, microsoft.com, stackoverflow.com, cnn.com, facebook.com. Its quite fun sometimes to see just how much awful code there is out there being run by major sites but sometimes it gets really annoyed. I've wondered for YEARS how to change this but never really got around to it. Its particularly annoying today and I'd really like to know of any solutions. The only solution I have is : use a different browser for everyday browsing. I'm hopin theres some quick and easy plugin someone can direct me to where I can toggle it on and off based upon the domain i'm on. Edit: I generally use IE7 for everyday browsing

• Bash: Continue script if only one instance is running.

  Hello, now this is embarrassing. I'm writing quick script and I can't figure out why this statement don't work. if [ $(pidof -x test.sh | wc -w) -eq 1 ]; then echo Passed; fi I also tried using back-ticks instead of $() but it still wouldn't work. Can you see what is wrong with it? pidof -x test.sh | wc -w returns 1 if I run it inside of script, so I don't see any reason why basically if [ 1 -eq 1 ] wouldn't pass. Thanks a lot!

• No recent books on MPI: is it dying?

  I've never used Message Passing Interface (MPI), but I've heard its name thrown about, most recently with Windows HPC Server. I had a quick look on amazon to see if there were any books on it, but they're all dated around 7 or more years ago. Is MPI still a valid technology choice for new applications, or has it been largely superceded by other distributed programming alternatives (e.g. DataSynapse GridServer)? As it's not really an implementation, but rather a standard, what is the likelihood (assuming it's not dead) that learning it will result in better design of distributed programming systems? Is there something else I should be looking at instead?

• Getting .NET schema for a stored procedure result

  I have a couple of stored procedures in T-SQL where each stored procedure has a fixed schema for the result set. I need to map the result sets for each procedure to a POCO object and need the column name and type for each column in the result set. Is there a quick way of accessing the information? The best way I have found so far is accessing each stored procedure from .NET and writing my own extension method on a IDataReader/IDataRecord for dumping the information (column names and types) out. Example, a stored procedure executing the following query: SELECT Id, IntField, NullableIntField, VarcharField, DateField FROM SomeTable would require me to have the mapping information: Id - Guid IntField - System.Int32 NullableIntField - Nullable<System.Int32> VarcharField - String DateField - DateTime

• anybody working or heard of qcubed/qcodo mvc frameworks ?

  Hi, I have been using qcodo/qcubed for developing CMS based sites. I had been successful in developing and maintaining fairly complex sites using these frameworks. Things get done so quick and easy using qcubed that i never felt the need to look for another framework like zend, symfony .... I am wondering if you guys have tried or have been using them. I have not tried zend, symfony, kohana or other frameworks of discusson on reddit. What is your opinion, is qcubed as good as these frameworks? If not can you please suggest some of the features that you find useful in other frameworks and are missing from qcubed. thanks

• PHP Session Id changes between pages

  Hi All, I have a problem where i am losing the PHP session between 2 pages. The session_start() is included in a file called session-inc.php into every page requiring a session to be set. This works for all pages on the site except one particular page, member-profile.php. When this page is visited a new session with a different id (same session name) is set and used instead. A few more details: Session name is set manually All pages are on the same server under the same domain name If i put an additional session_start() above the include('session-inc.php') in the member-profile.php file, the session is carried over correctly I have tried setting the session_cookie_domain and session.session_name in the .htaccess, this worked for this domain but it stopped the session being passed over to out payment domain We are running apache 2.2.6 with php 5.2.5 Putting the session_start() above the include('session-inc.php') in the member-profile.php file is the quick and dirty fix for this problem, but i am wondering if anybody know why this would be happening. How should you package the custom control? Package the control in a Merge Module (.msm) and add the .msm file to a Windows Installer project. Package the control into a cabinet project (.cab) and add the .cab file to a Windows Installer project. Create a separate directory for the control and then package it in a Windows Installer project along with the rest of the project files. Package the control as a Web setup project and create a link to that project from the Windows Installer project. Any ideas?

• Writing a PHP web crawler using cron

  Hi all I have written myself a web crawler using simplehtmldom, and have got the crawl process working quite nicely. It crawls the start page, adds all links into a database table, sets a session pointer, and meta refreshes the page to carry onto the next page. That keeps going until it runs out of links That works fine however obviously the crawl time for larger websites is pretty tedious. I wanted to be able to speed things up a bit though, and possibly make it a cron job. Any ideas on making it as quick and efficient as possible other than setting the memory limit / execution time higher?

  I'm trying to get the frames (properly decoded) and the frames delay times from an animated gif. I've opened up the code to gifsicle and have also tried lungif but I'm not accustomed to c code and I'm having a difficult time following the logic. I've also tried other examples and I've gotten one to work but it didn't do the proper LZW decoding. Can anyone give me a quick example of how to do this? I'm building this app in xcode and trying to get an NSArray of the image frames. Thanks.

  I have this code block here and i need to make sure the rankedPlayersWaitingForMatch is synchronized between threads properly. I was going to use synchronize but that i don't think will work here because of the variable being used in the if statement. I read online about final Lock lock = new ReentrantLock(); but I am a bit confused on how to use it in this case properly with the try/finally block. Can I get a quick example?   Hi, How can I determine whether xml serializer can serialize a file which is in a shared location and monitored by a file monitor. The file monitor has a list of parsers which are used to parse files in the shared folder. Once a file gets dropped into the folder, the file monitor will ask the registered parsers whether any of them can handle this file, if yes, the monitor will move the file out from the shared folder and assigns the task to the parser. Since some of the files are quite big, so I need to have a quick check on each parsers. How can I determine my xml parser can serialize the file without loading the full file into the memory?

  I'm working on a Python script that transforms this: foo bar Into this: [[Component foo]] [[bar]] The script checks (per input line) if the page "Component foo" exists. If it exists then a link to that page is created, if it doesn't exist then a direct link is created. The problem is that I need a quick & cheap way to check if a lot of wiki pages exist.I don't want to (try to) download all the 'Component' pages. I already figured out a fast way to do this by hand: Edit a new wiki page. paste all the 'component' links into the page, press preview, and then save the resulting preview HTML page. The resulting HTML file contains a different link for existing pages than for non-existing pages. So to rephrase my question: How can I save a mediawiki preview page in Python?

  I'm currently writing an in house coding challenge web application and I am wondering if there is any other security precaution I would need to have other than below java option at runtime. java -Djava.security.manager=default Basically, challenges would be more of single threaded math and algorithm focused. So I would need to enable basic data structure objects and disable any file, sockets, threading or any thing that might be not so important. Based on my quick search turning on security manager as above seems to be a solution but since this is a security related I would like to be sure before it goes alive. Is there anything else I could do more?

  I'm creating a prototype for a java web application. Frontend is a Swing-based java applet. Backend should be a type of web-service, that is called by applet. Backend should run inside a servlet container and should have its own security (username/password) database. I know, that Tomcat has its own user database (realm), but the app should have own. Web-services, in turn, carrying out app logic and database access (via Hibernate). I'm a newbie for a web development and I'm getting lost in a huge amount of the java web frameworks. Even just reading 'introduction' and 'getting started' documents takes a lot of time. So I need an advice which framework(s) are suitable for the task and not very complex for a quick start. • Why does my app not work on Android 2.3?

  Hi all, just a quick question about Android 2.3. I've been receiving reports from people using my app that it crashes on startup in Android 2.3. It works absolutely fine on the other SDK versions as far as I can tell. Since I don't have a phone running Android 2.3 I can't test out where the error is, which makes it very frustrating to deal with! Has anyone got any ideas what might have changed in Android 2.3 to mean the app crashes? Has anyone else had a similar problem? The following are ideas I've had for what might be causing it... Splash screen - on my main activity I trigger this in onCreate and it displays for 3 secs before finishing I'm using the GPS capability of Android, has this vastly changed in 2.3 to mean that something's going wrong? There's been a fundamental change in application startup in 2.3 that I'm not aware of. Any feedback would be much appreciated!

• Options for header in raw byte file.

  I have a large raw data file (up to 1GB) which contains raw samples from a USB data logger. I need to store extra information relating to the file (sample rate, description, trigger point, last seek position etc) and was looking into adding this as a some sort of header. The header file should ideally be human readable and flexible so I've so far ruled out some sort of binary serialization into a header. I also want to avoid two separate files as they could end up separated when copied or backed up. I remembered somebody telling me that newer *.*x Microsoft Office documents are actually a number of files in a zip. Is there a simple way to achieve this? Could I still keep the quick seek times to the raw file?

• Where does ASP.Net get its rendered IDs from?

  Hi, I've inherited a project with some nasty JavaScript that depends on hard coded object ids. i.e. There are lots of places where it does things like this var magazine = document.getElementById('repModuleDisplay__ctl3_chkCats_0'); When the page renders in my UAT environment, the HTML looks like this, and everything works OK. <input id="repModuleDisplay__ctl3_chkCats_0" type="checkbox" name="repModuleDisplay:_ctl3:chkCats:0" ... etc However, when I put it on my Production environment, the HTML is suddenly rending like this: <input id="repModuleDisplay_ctl03_chkCats_0" type="checkbox" name="repModuleDisplay$ctl03$chkCats$0" ... etc The difference in ids means that the JavaScript can't find the Element, and fails. In an ideal world, I'd scrap the buggy JavaScript and do it again properly, but for a quick fix, I'd like to know what is causing the difference in rendering between the two environments. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Neil
