• How can I make a boring project (another WordPress site) interesting?

  WordPress is my example, but the question can be generalized to any technology that is not particularly interesting. To me, WordPress takes away the intellectually gratifying pieces of coding. I would rather write a new version of WordPress than write a WordPress theme and glue together some plugins. I am using WP because my company dictates the platform for some of our clients (I do not disagree with the choice from a business perspective, WP is quick and cheap to implement). My question is, how can I make my next WordPress project interesting? I want to advance my understanding of the fundamentals of programming (aka data structures, algorithms, and caching) but do not see how I can achieve this when coding another WP site. I have a fairly tight understanding of front-end technologies and believe I have made WP do things it was never intended to do. Examples are here and here. Solving front-end related problems is not as interesting as coding a full stack application. Any advice will help.

• Count number of results in a View

  I need to count how many people belong in pre-defined groups (this is easy to do in SQL using the SELECT COUNT statement). My Views query runs fine and displays the actual data in my table, but I simply need to know how many results it found. However there doesn't seem to be a COUNT option in views. I am guessing I am going to have to use some sort of views hook, and then stick the result in the table. Here's a quick example of what i'm trying to achieve: My Table ---------------------- Group A | 20 people Group B | 63 people and so on. (I've tried using the Views_Calc module, but I get errors because it is not quite stable yet.) Anybody know of an easy way to count results in Views?

• update dialog title for each click

  Hey guys I have a quick question, I have a dialog box that has multiple links with different attributes. Each time a link is clicked, the attribute src is printed inside of the dialog box so that each link has a unique output in the dialog. My problem is simply that only the first src title is in every box and I would like to change that as well with each click. I separated the line containing title to show the problem. • jQuery.get() - Practical uses?

  I am trying to understand why you would use jQuery.get() and jQuery.get(index). The docs say it is to convert the jQuery selection to the raw DOM object instead of working with the selection as a jQuery object and the methods available to it. So a quick example: $("div").get(0).innerHTML; is the same as: $("div").html(); Obviously this is a bad example but I am struggling to figure when you would use .get(). Can you help me understand when I would use this method in my code?

• Delete files in C# that windows does not want me to delete?

  At my company, we are writing a script to take care of simple tasks that we usually would do by hand. I am using c# to delete profiles in c:\documents and settings\, except a few. These will simply be left alone. The problem is that even with code that sets the files to normal and marks the admin user as an owner, they won't delete. They say that the quick launch folder has access denied. I am using a recursive permissions change method and I know that it works. Same thing with file attributes. Why won't it work? How do I fix this?

• Writing a script for reading many .csv files with similar filenames

  I have several .csv files with similar filenames except a numeric month (i.e. 03_data.csv, 04_data.csv, 05_data.csv, etc.) that I'd like to read into R. I have two questions: Is there a function in R similar to MATLAB's varname and assignin that will let me create/declare a variable name within a function or loop that will allow me to read the respective .csv file - i.e. 03_data.csv into 03_data data.frame, etc.? I want to write a quick loop to do this because the filenames are similar. As an alternative, is it better to create one dataframe with the first file and then append the rest using a for loop? How would I do that?

• I'm looking for a blend mode that gives 'realistic' paint colors. (Subtractive)

  I've been looking for a blend mode to (well ...) blend two RGB pixels in order to build colors in the samw way that a painter builds them (i.e: subtractive). Here are quick examples of the type of results that I'm expecting: CYAN + MAGENTA = BLUE CYAN + YELLOW = GREEN MAGENTA + YELLOW = RED RED + YELLOW = ORANGE RED + BLUE = PURPLE YELLOW + BLUE = GREEN I'm looking for a formula, like: dest_red = first_red + second_red; dest_green = first_green + second_green; dest_blue = first_blue + second_blue; I've tried with the commonly used 'multiply' formula but it doesn't work; I've tried with custom made formulas but I'm still not able to 'crack' how it should work.   Hey guys quick question, I thought I was doing the right thing but I keep getting the wrong result. I am trying to simply find the id of the entry with the min time, but I am not getting that entry. $qryuserscount1="SELECT id,min(entry_time) FROM scrusersonline WHERE topic_id='$topic_id'"; $userscount1=mysql_query($qryuserscount1); while ($row2 = mysql_fetch_assoc($userscount1)) { echo $onlineuser= $row2['id']; } That is my query, and it does not work. This however does work which does not make sense to me SELECT id FROM scrusersonline WHERE topic_id='$topic_id' ORDER by entry_time LIMIT 1, can anyone quickly point out what I am doing wrong?

• Need a field / flag / status number for mutliple use ?

  I want to create a field in my database which will be easy to query. I think if I give a bit of background this will make more sense. My table has listings shown on my website. I run a program which looks at the listings a decides whether to hide them from being shown on the site. I also hide listings manually for various reasons. I want to store these reasons in a field, so more than one reason could be made for hiding. So I need some form of logic to determine which reasons have been used. Can anyone offer me any guidance on what will be future-proof aka new reasons and what will be quick and easy to query upon ?

• MySQL Insert Query Randomly Takes a Long Time

  I am using MySQL to manage session data for my PHP application. When testing the app, it is usually very quick and responsive. However, seemingly randomly the response will stall before finally completing after a few seconds. I have narrowed the problem down to the session write query which looks something like this: INSERT INTO Session VALUES('lvg0p9peb1vd55tue9nvh460a7', '1275704013', '') ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE sessAccess='1275704013',sessData=''; The slow query log has this information: Query_time: 0.524446 Lock_time: 0.000046 Rows_sent: 0 Rows_examined: 0 This happens about 1 out of every 10 times. The query usually only takes ~0.0044 sec. The table is InnoDB with about 60 rows. sessId is the primary key with a BTREE index. Since this is accessed on every page view, it is clearly not an acceptable execution time. Why is this happening? Update: Table schema is: sessId:varchar(32), sessAccess:int(10), sessData:text

  When I call: setChanged(); notifyObservers() on a java.until.Observable class, will all the listening Observer objects complete execution of their udpate() methods - assuming we are running in the same Thread - before the java.until.Observable class continues running? This is important because I will be sending a few messages through the notifyObservers(Object o) method in quick concession, it is important that each Observer class has finished its method before the new one though. I understand that the order of execution for each Observer class may vary when we call notifyObservers() - it is just important that the order of method execution for each individual instance is in order.

• Requiring clients to solve computational puzzles...

  Not that I need it, but it was interesting to hear someone speak about their server and protecting it from DOS attack by having a puzzle that the client must solve before the server will do anything (it doesnt do allocations or make a session unless solved). The person also said puzzles can be made to take a quick amount of time or long. And they are easy to check for correct solutions but difficult to solve. What are these puzzles? I never heard of one. Can someone give an example (or a link)?

• Software buttons in the android 4.2 emulator not showing up (tablet)

  I'm getting crazy right now. I just installed the latest android adt bundle from http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html. It's version v21.0.0. Now I wanted to test my tablet app (designed for 10.1" xlarge mdpi) in the emulator, but I cannot get any software buttons for home/back/... Here's my device configuration. This config is afterwards assigned to the avd. http://i.stack.imgur.com/Q7xvP.png Hardware-buttons don't work as well (you cannot set hardware buttons in a tablet-like emulator). The target api is level 15 (android 4.0.3). I searched stackoverflow, but didn't find any help concerning the latest version of android. • Perl date function/module able to understand full unabbreviated months.

  Let's say I read in a string from somewhere that contains a date, and it's date format doesn't abbreviate the month. Is there a module that can handle reading it in, and then outputting it to whichever format I choose? I've taken a quick look through CPAN, and every date module I looked at didn't seem to accommodate an unabbreviated month. Thanks for any help EDIT: As an example, say we have a string like this; "2 February 1988". Now we want to convert it into "1988-02-02" (YYYY-MM-DD).

  In general, should one design in order to place processing load on client-side? More specifically, a search engine to locate subscriber information requires a fair amount of parsing (multiple phone numbers to sort and format, hour of day, timezone, comparisons for possible substitutions of user information, etc.). Again, in general, is it preferred that one have client-side do the work? It seems to me 'yes' in a situation in which one will have many thousands of hits per minute. Use php for quick database queries ... process retrieved data client-side. yes ... no?

  I'm using the Twitter API streaming to collect thousand of tweets every minute. They need to be matched to a list of keywords (can contain spaces). This is my current method: $text = preg_replace( '/[^a-z0-9]+/i', ' ', strtolower( $data['text'] ) ); $breakout = explode( " ", $text ); $result = array_intersect( $this->_currentTracks, $breakout ); I chop the tweet into words, and the matches them against my current keywords. This works well for all the keywords without a space ofc. If I wanted to find for example "Den Haag", It won't show up, because the string is exploded into words (based on the spaces).   I'm currently planning a piece of software for dogbreeders and I'm in doubt about my datadesign...whether I'm doing something smart or stupid :) The plan at the moment is one holistic "dog" table sorta like this... I can see a quick lookup reason to have it but I'm really in doubt whether it's good or bad in the end. I thinking it would be better designed if I had a rel-table on the side with Id coupling, but I'm really in doubt how well any of the cases are. A side note is that it'll only be me personally looking at the data this way (or someone adopting the project from me)

• MySQL Database || Tables Issue

  I'm trying to write up a script where the user is able to purchase an amount of points for dollars. I want the transaction to be inserted into MySQL. I keep facing a: "Column count doesn't match value count at row 1" error. And I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I have written up this: mysql_query("INSERT INTO paypal_donations VALUES (NULL, ".$account_id.", ".$char_id.", ".$price.", ".$dp.", NOW(), NOW(), 'Started', 0, 0, '', '');") or die(mysql_error()); But I don't know what to execute in MySQL, since I've never worked with it before. • PHP / XHTML. Should I place everything in echo tags?

  A quick question involving PHP development, I seem to be wondering about this more and more as I develop more complex sites. Basically say we have a basic PHP / XHTML inbox (messaging system). I perform checks at the top (check if user is logged in, check if user has correct permissions etc). Then use the 'header('location:www.abc.com)' function if the authentication fails. The question is do I write the rest of the inbox code in a huge 'else' block or just use standard html. I read somewhere about about it being bad to put any code after using the 'header' function.

• Navigating sharepoint with a treeview

  I'm trying to replace the navigation on our sharepoint site with a treeview. It's a large site with up to 4 subsite leves in places. All I need it to do is show a consistent structure from page to page show only sites and pages The default sharepoint treeview seems to do neither of these things (doesn't display items from the parent site, includes document libraries but not pages). Does anyone have any idea how to achieve this? We're using the publishing site template throughout if that makes a difference. I've tried binding the tree to the datasource the quick launch uses but I guess from the error message they expect differently named properties.

  Possible Duplicate: Staying Relevant As a Programmer As you all know in our line of work it is important to keep your self up to date with all of the technical progress that is being made out there. As a developer you have to be quick to grasp new programming languages and programming concepts as well as completely new technologies. I read about a guy who got fired at 50 years of age with tons of experience in some ancient technology and he now couldn't get a job anywhere because his experience wasn't in OOP or some other more modern concept. I don't what to end up in that situation. How do you keep your self up to date? How do you train your self and make sure that you keep your self at the forefront?
