• Rapid Web Application Development ASP.net vs. Open Source Platforms

  Good morning - I'm an intermediate-level developer who wants to build on online data-driven app (CRUD with a few calculations and basic HTML form inputs, nothing fancy) that keeps track of user sessions, and looks "professional" (or at least not "homemade"). I'm looking to development something with the look-and-feel that users get from sites like: http://www.datamasher.org/ http://www.thisweknow.org/ (About page says it was made with Ruby on Rails, which I'm unfamiliar with) (stackoverflow.com) Any pointers on whether I should just go the Miscrosoft route, and develop in ASP.net with WebForms, or if there's a quick qay to do this kind of development (with a WYSIWYG environment) on an open-source platform? I'm willing to learn, if it's somethat I can use to quickly drag/drop, add code, and publish online. Templates would be a plus, too. I apologize is the question seems a bit vague.

  I have a simple Web Service that send email and is called via: public bool SendMail(string format, string from, string to, string cc, string bcc, string subject, string body, string replyTo) I have never used ajax before, and find I need to call this service and pass form contents to it from a simple html page (I cannot use asp or asp.net unfortunately). Can I get a quick rundown of what is required? I have searched for simple examples, but find I am having difficulty understanding how to call it and pass the parameters required of the Web Service. • Tabbar App with Paging between tabs.

  Hi everyone, I've been struggling for about four days now trying to figure out how to implement the functionality I need. Basically I want to make a tabbar app that you can swipe back and forth between the tabs. Say I have 4 tabs. Would it make any sense just to create a scrollview that's 4 times as wide as the device, and load up 4 individual views side by side? Then I could use the tabbar delegate to simple tell which page to make visible? I could also use itemSelected to update the tab itself if a user swipes to a new page. does this make sense / is it a good idea? I just need a quick yes or no answer before I spend another whole day pursuing something doomed to failure. Thank you very much for your help...

• Sharepoint Document Upload Page - Passing URL Variables?

  Throughout my SharePoint site, I have several document repositories that are tied to primary keys from an external database. I have added custom columns in the document library metadata fields so that we will know which SharePoint documents correspond with which table entries. As a requirement, we need to have document uploads that have these fields automatically populated. For instance, I'd like to have the following url: ./Upload.aspx?ClassID=2&SystemID=63 So that when you upload any documents to this library, it automatically adds the ClassID and SystemID values to the corresponding ClassID and SystemID columns outlined in the SharePoint document library fields. Is there any quick or easy way to do this, or will I have to completely rewrite the Upload.aspx script from scratch?

• Non-auto-increment rails/postgresql column

  I'm trying to have a model/table with duplicate information in it. The reason for this is so that the same data can be written to the table under different users and found for each user. However, I want a quick easy way to identify which information is a duplicate of other information. I think the best way to do this would be to have an item_id of sorts that increments with each "set" of entries to the table. Is there a way to do this without including another table that stores the information without attributing it to users?

• How do you increase Internet Explorer 7's "Select as you type" timeout for comboboxes?

  In Internet Explorer 7, you can select options from comboboxes by typing the first few letters of the value you're looking for. However, some people in our organisation are a bit slow and can't type their selection quick enough, with the result that the timeout is triggered and the "select as you type" process starts all over again. Example: If I type A-R-M-A (looking for Armadale) then wait half a second and type D, I'll get selections beginning with the letter D. What I want to do is increase this timeout to allow for slow typers. (We're in a corporate environment so rolling out these changes to all machines won't be a problem).

• Is it possible to replace a div element with jquery and update the dom?

  Hey guys quick question, I want to update the contents of a div with two new divs to take the place of the previous ones. Each new div has a unique id to take the place of the old ones. I then want any further update to use the ids of the new divs as their values instead of the original. Is this possible in Jquery?   Opening a public page from browser works fine. Downloading same page using WebClient throws - (403) Forbidden. What is going on here ?   I am a software developer with 10+ years commercial experience, I am comfortable with nearly all of imperative languages. But I realized that most of employers prefer not candidates who is able to deliver good software but those who is trained to answer questions like "what are ten differences between pointers and references in C++" or "what this messy code fragment will print". Last time I have read a book on C++ 15 years ago in secondary school and yes, that was Bjarne Stroustrup. But today I need something quick, without long philosophical explanations about polymorphism etc but with focus to silly interview tests. So, can you recommend any short and effective books to refresh my theoretical knowledge? Thank you.

However when i run the above my GUI displays but with the windows hourglass? Could someone show me a quick fix so that i can still crudely show the GUI, let the application code run and then later write to the GUI?

  Just diving into pylons here, and am trying to get my head around the basics of SQLALchemy. I have figured out how to load a record by id: user_q = session.query(model.User) user = user_q.get(user_id) But how do I query by a specific field (i.e. username)? I assume there is a quick way to do it with the model rather than hand-building the query. I think it has something with the add_column() function on the query object, but I can't quite figure out how to use it.   Hi, I develope an application in C#.Net 2.0, Windows. The App has a RSS Feed Reader for specific sites (to collect the biggest news). I found a very nice DLL for this in which I can very easy read the RSS. But my problem is the design, I tried a lot, how to display easy, quick and nice, but it sucks like hell, I tried nerly every control in the toolbox and fill it with the RSS Feeds and it looks ugly. So knows anybody a control to display RSS feeds nicly? I know its an copy, but no one answers there.

  Not that i need it but it was interesting to hear someone speak about their server and protecting it from DOS attack by having a puzzle that the client must solve before the server will do anything (it doesnt do allocations or make a session unless solved). The person also said puzzles can be made to take a quick amount of time or long. And they are easy to check if it is solve correctly but difficult to solve. What are these puzzles? I never heard of one. Can someone give an example (link?)

• MySQL: host name universal change.

  I am making some updates to a php site which I did not design. I have a local copy of the site. At the top of each page there are settings for the host name for the db connection. Is there someway I can setup a pointer to the remote address. The address is 'mysqlhost' for example and I want that to point to 'mysql.myhost.com'. I tried creating a HOST record for mysqlhost pointing to the IP address it resolves to but that doesn't work. If I put 'mysql.myhost.com' in the connection it works. If I put that IP address it doesn't so that is probably why the HOST record idea doesn't work. Other than creating a local copy of the DB is there a quick way so that I don't have to modify each file in my dev environment and then again when I redeploy?

• Asign Id's dynamically to DOM elements with javascript.

  Hello everybody, I just have a quick question about how to generate id's on-the-fly for HTML elements. So far I've tried a few things, I started with a "for" loop, I already know how many elements I have to generate Id's for, in this case I have an "ul" with 6 "li". My "for" loop is as follows: var items = $("ul li").length; for(var i = 0; i <= items; i++){ $("ul li").attr("id", "number" + i); } "number" would be the new id concatenated with "i", so I get a different Id for each "li". As you can probably tell, this does not work, because I end up with the same Id for each "li": in this case I get <li id="number6">... </li> for all the "li" elments in the "ul". I tried a "while" loop and ".each()" with jQuery but I get the exact same thing. Any help would be appreciated.

• Magento: Add (and retrieve) custom database field for CMS pages

  I want to assign custom parameters to CMS pages in Magento (i.e. 'about', 'customer service', etc), so they can be grouped. The end goal is to use the parameters for each page to show (or hide) them in a nav menu. Writing a quick method in the page/html block to retrieve the pages (active only) for the menu was easy, but I can't figure out how to group them so that 'testimonials', 'history', and 'contact' are associated with 'about', and 'return policy', 'shipping', and 'contact' are associated with 'customer service'. Any help to point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  So, I am adapting some code I found online to suit my needs. However, my set_pixel function has two more parameters. Since there are lots of calls to this function even doing a quick paste over would be very tedious. So, I thought this would be a good time for me to learn some simple regular expressions. So, I have calls of this type: set_pixel(arg1, arg2); which I want to change to something like: set_pixel(arg1, arg2, arg3, arg4); Note: arg1 and and 2 should be preserved, whereas arg3 and arg4 are most of the time the same. How can I achieve this?

• how to convert legacy query to ActiveRecord Rails way

Now, I know if I convert this to the ActiveRecord way then I will not have to put update_date, current_date because it will put that on it's own. It will also put orderid on it's own also (auto_increment). I am looking for a way to convert the above query to ActiveRecord Rails way but still be able to put orderid on my own (session[:ordersid]). I do not want to rely on auto_increment because then I will have to refactor lot of the other code. This might be a quick and dirty fix but I want to know whether this type of flexibility is offered in rails? I have wondered about this question many times. Why won't rails allow me to have that flexibility?

• what are the various approaches for generating PDFs?

  I have an idea for an app that would take some flash content which contains graphics and images like various geometric shapes and polygons and some random images and convert them to PDF. Also, since I envision this app to be used my multiple users I want this process to be quick and scalable. One possible solution I could think of is have a small flash client with the capability of assembling the above mentioned graphics and images. Generate some sort of XML, send it to a server running a Java process which could render the PDF using iText. I was wondering what are the other possible ways to do it or the best practices. Technology isn't an issue; open source or commercial. I am looking for ideas to make the process fast and scalable. Most importantly, I don't want the back end server side PDF render engine to constraint the flash client capabilities. I would appreciate if you could share your tech stack idea. Thanks a lot!

• Regex for zeroing in on build output text error

  I'd like to quickly hone in on what failed in a build log output that is nearly 5k lines long, using Notepad++ as my editor for the file. Notepad++ has the nice ability to specify regular expressions, so I am wondering if there is a way to not match: Compile complete -- 0 errors, 0 warnings but to match, for example: Compile complete -- 1 errors, 0 warnings Compile complete -- 100 errors, 0 warnings where the match would be (1 or more) errors. If this isn't possible, I will probably just write a quick line-by-line parsing tool instead, but I was hoping someone on StackOverflow could whip out a regular expression in the same amount of time - I'm definitely not proficient enough with regular expressions to be able to write one for my needs in a short amount of time.

For instance, I would like for THIS to happen: myfilearray[1]array[2]endl; Obviously, the "endl" just isn't allowed. Is there another way to do this? Edit---thanks for the quick responses guys! From a text file, I'm trying to store two strings from that file into arrays and then do the same with the next line (or until I desire, using a for loop) Using strings is important to me as it will make my future program a lot more flexible.
