So, with that, and my inherently cheap nature, I was wondering if it was possible to bypass the purchase of a refurbished Mac by running the iPhone SDK on a Hackintosh? I have made a basic event system wherebye each Blocks::Event has a list of handlers and when the event is fired the methods are called. • iPhone: Best Method for Passing Data to and from a Server

  I am developing an iPhone application that downloads data from a website. The website database is implemented in SQL and the site itself uses the classic ASP interface. I am unsure as to which method would be best for transferring data to and from the server. Both JSON and SOAP require XML processing and I'm not sure how that affects performance or which of those two is best. What would be the best method in general for data transfer given the server configuration we currently have? I very new to this field and I'm a bit confused. Any help would be appreciated.

  Hi, I would like to get some links for getting started with design patterns.My requirement is , (at Initial stage) How to go about developing a particular pattern , say customized ListView which can be shared across applications . e.g. Applications will call something like drawCustomizedListView(params...) and my code will draw the listview according to the parameters supplied. This is particularly useful when across the applications I have to draw customized views. My intention is, I should not repeat the same code everywhere for doing similar task. • Appcelerator Vs. MonoTouch - Which one is best for a .NET developer ?

  Hi All, I'm a .NET developer with 10 years experience developing Web & Mobile Apps. I'm looking to branch into iPhone (and possibly Android) development. I'm looking at two products: Appcelerator Titanium (http://www.appcelerator.com/) and MonoTouch (http://monotouch.net/) I like MonoTouch because of it's standing in the Mono development communitity and it's C#. In saying that Appcelerator looks very straight forward using HTML and Javascript and targets Android too (which is overtaking the iPhone). The apps I'm looking to develop are line of business applications with data entry, syncing with back office, etc. Can anyone give their opinion on the pro's / con's of using these tools or any experiences. • How do I secure all the admin actions in all controllers in cakePHP

  Hello Everyone, I am developing an application using cakePHP v 1.3 on windows (XAMPP). Most of the controllers are baked with the admin routing enabled. I want to secure the admin actions of every controller with a login page. How can I do this without repeating much ? One solution to the problem is that "I check for login information in the admin_index action of every controller" and then show the login screen accordingly. Is there any better way of doing this ? The detault URL to admin (http://localhost/app/admin) is pointing to the index_admin action of users controller (created a new route for this in routes.php file) Thanks

• Unable to access global variable defined in settings.php [Drupal]

  I am developing a website using Drupal 6.16. I want to define a variable in settings.php like $ge_path = 'some/path/here'; And I want to use it inside my modules. function mymodule_block(....) { global $ge_path; $fullPath = $ge_path . '/another/path'; doSomething($fullPath); } But I am getting NULL as the value of $ge_path. Why am I not able to access the global variable defines in settings.php? How can I get the proper value inside my module functions? The funny thing is, I am able to access $db_url['default'] and $db_url['mydatabase'] etc.. which are defined just two lines above $ge_path in settings.php!

  I went to the Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 launch event in Minneapolis yesterday and was slightly surprised by how much they were trotting out SharePoint and improved SharePoint development in Visual Studio 2010. SharePoint is something I've largely ignored over the years as a web developer and solution architect on a small development team. I was always under the impression that SharePoint was used mostly for intranets in large corporations, and that if you were developing for SharePoint, it meant that a corporate decision had been made to use it and you as a developer probably had few (if any) options. I realize this assumption is probably incorrect. So, what are the "cool" uses for SharePoint? What unique business problems have you solved using it? What could make a developer excited to be working on something for SharePoint?

• eclipse CDT - Cannot open .gcda files

  I am developing a coverage data tool in eclipse cdt. I used gcov and build and execute my C program to generate .gcda and .gcno files. When double click on .gcda file to see the coverage data, below error message displays. An error has occurred. See error log for more details. org.eclipse.linuxtools.binutils.utils.STSymbolManager.demangle(Lorg/eclipse/cdt/core/IBinaryParser$IBinaryObject;Ljava/lang/String;Lorg/eclipse/core/resources/IProject;)Ljava/lang/String; But I already downloaded and save org.eclipse.linuxtools.binutils_4.0.0.201209191645.jar into plugins directory. • Would watching a file for changes or redundantly querying that file be more efficient?

  I am wondering whether watching a file/directory for changes using the FileSystemWatcher class is extremely memory intensive. I am developing a desktop application in C# that will be running behind the scenes continuously on low-performance computers, and I need some way of checking to see if various files have changed. I can think of a few solutions: Watch the directories using FileSystemWatcher. Run a timed thread on an interval that goes through and manually checks this. Check manually every time the actionhandler thread runs (the program will occasionally do something, on an action). Any suggestions? Thanks! badPanda

• Slow page unload in IE

  I am developing a site which creates many table rows dynamically. The total amount of rows right now is 187. Everything works fine when creating the rows, but in IE when I leave the page, there is a large amount of lag. I do not know if this is some how related to the heavy DOM manipulation I am doing in the page? I do not create any function closures when building the dynamic content's event handlers so I do not believe this problem is related to memory leaks. Any insight is much appreciated.

  I´m developing a webpage that contains two <p> tags (program and events), that shows two different contents. When I click the program button (it´s a <p> tag), it´s ok, it shows the table on the div´s. But, when I click the events button, again it shows the program <p> tag contents, and I want to show the events table content. I´ve read de solution for this question on this site, but not happens, when I change my JS file, the content of both <p> tags disapears. Can somebody help me?

  Hi, Im developing a mobile application in dot net Compact framework. I managed to edit the registry HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT so that a click on file with .xyz extension will open my application. basically, i need to do some operation on this file when it's clicked. however, i realise that if i do that the first time, it reaches program.cs at static void Main. but when the program is running and i click on the file with .xyz extension again, it doesnt loads the program static void Main. i tried setting breakpoints at the form that is currently running but still nothing. so where does it go to? how can i detect file .xyz is clicked and do something??

• Getting started with writing a desktop app that talks to an iPhone

  I'm thinking of writing an app to selectively transfer photos/music to and from my iPhone, mostly for fun and personal convenience. However, I'm stuck at the very beginning -- where do I look to find information on how to do this? Pretty much every link I see talks about developing applications that run on the iPhone, but nothing about desktop app for interfacing with an iPhone. I'm on Windows (no access to a Mac, but I'll take suggestions for that for when I eventually acquire one), and I'm most familiar with C#, but other languages are definitely an option. Can anybody offer me a few pointers on getting started? Thanks.

• Using Inch or cm/mm from metric system for americans and canadians?

  We're developing an international product that displays a ruler to the user. Now in Germany and many other countries its of course common to use the metric system: cm or mm. I'm aware that americans and canadians (and maybe others too) do still use inches, feet and yards. So the question is: will todays americans (and other inch-country-citizens) understand the metric system and take it for granted - or do they still love their inches so much that they'd rather die than use a product with incorrect measurements? • Gson module not found Blackberry Java application

  Hi. I'm developing a simple application for Blackberry and i'm using Google's gson to retrieve some data from a server. The UI was working fine but when I added the gson part it started failing, it wont run. When I run the application in the simulator it show this error: "Uncaught: RuntimeException" on that annoying white screen of death and after holding the click button I can see that there is an alert dialog that says "Module 'gson-1.4' not found". However I did added "gson-1.4.jar" in the Project's Properties - Java Build Path - Add External JARs... also, the Gson objects are recognized at my code, no syntax errors at my code. BTW, I'm using Eclipse and the most recent Blackberry SDK Please help

• AVD Screen orientation not changing with CTRL+F11 or CTRL+F12

  I run my app in the AVD emulator using eclipse but I'm unable to change the screen orientation in the AVD (Android 2.0 platform on the emulator). When I press CONTROL+F11 or CONTROL+F12 on the keyboard, nothing happens. No messages are generated in the adb debuglog/logcat either when I press either hotkey. According to http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/emulator.html these are the correct hotkeys to switch the emulator's screen orientation. I tried it with my app, and with the messaging app. The hotkey has no affect in any case. I'm running Fedora 12, Gnome. I checked my Keyboard Shortcuts in the System - Preferences menu, nothing's attached to either hotkey. Same problem, 3 different PCs (all running Fedora Gnome).

• PHP - what is the proper way to do inline HTML variable output?

  I just moved from an Ubuntu PHP workstation dev environment back to Windows and am using xampp. I have a bit of code, like so: <input type="text" name="txtEmail" value="<?=$emailaddress;?>"/> that I swear worked to display the variable in the textbox when I was developing before. But when I loaded the page on Windows/xampp it just put that text between the quotes in the textbox. Instead, I ended up changing it to something like: <input type="text" name="txtFirstName" value="<?php echo($firstname);?>" /> The latter makes sense, but I guess I thought there was a shorthand or something, and I must be going crazy because I'm sure the first way was working on a difference environment. So what's the best way to do this?
