• IronPython :- Visual Studio 2010 or SharpDevelop?

  I'm considering developing a medium-size project for a client in IronPython. It's a pretty straightforward replacement for an existing system I've been supporting for several years, so the specification is quite well defined and understood. This is my first significant IronPython and .Net project so I'm expecting a bit of a learning curve. I was going to use SharpeDevelop, but I can purchase VisualStudion 2010 for a reasonable price and whilst I understood that IronPython Tools for Visual Studio 2008 were not so good, I haven't seen anything about the update for 2010 yet. Has anyone used either or both of these in a reasonable-sized commercial environment and do you have any recommendations? (and I'm aware of this question, but this is specifically about VS2010)

  Hi. I'm currently developing a little browser-based Twitter widget. Currently, I'm stuck with getting the URLs to work. I'm kinda newbie, when it comes to regex (I know, how to get parts of a string, but this one – tough one). So, I need a regex that would search/replace www.domain.tld -> <a href="http://www.domain.tld">http://www.domain.tld</a> With/without http://, preferably. Any advice is welcome. Thanks.

• Slow page unload in IE

  I am developing a site which creates many table rows dynamically. The total amount of rows right now is 187. Everything works fine when creating the rows, but in IE when I leave the page, there is a large amount of lag. I do not know if this is some how related to the heavy DOM manipulation I am doing in the page? I do not create any function closures when building the dynamic content's event handlers so I do not believe this problem is related to memory leaks. Any insight is much appreciated.

• Tap, Pan for a map & fixed headers - event conflict

  I'm currently developing a small WebApp that makes use of Google Maps (front-end uses jquery-ui-maps) jQuery Mobile with a fixed header & footer Now I encountered a conflict that appears on touch enabled devices as well as on desktop/mouse controlled "click" events: When I "tap" or "click" the map to actually "pan" it, then my header/footer toggles it's visibility. As I want to keep the toggle behaviour, I can't simply deactivate it, but showing/hiding the header/footer on every "pan" of the map is odd. After thinking some time about it, I think I got a concept that should work: Question: How I can I add a delay to the visibility toggle for the header/footer? So when I don't release the finger/mouse after XYms, the header/footer doesn't show/hide?   I need to write a plugin for Dynamics CRM 4.0 that executes when a closed opportunity is reopened in order to change the salesstagecode. My questions are: When I register a new step to the plugin, what attribute(s) should I filter on? What property on the entity should I check the value of? and What should I look for the value of this entity to be so I can determine if the plugin execution should continue? I've typically written asynchronous workflows and my experience writing plugins is still developing, so I'd appreciate any help and clarification that can be offered. • Help on writing your own javax.swing.text.Document

  I'm writing a Java TextComponent where the underlying document has some structure. It is very short, basically one line. I need to be able to override the response to inserting or deleting characters in some parts of the document. My initial approach was to implement javax.swing.text.Document, but this seems to involve developing many associated classes (Element, EditorKit, View) and there don't seem to be many examples or tutorials on how to do this. There are plenty on using the pre-defined implementations. Can anyone point me at tutorials or other aids for simple implementations of Document and what other classes I need to create to make this work.

• Java framework "suggestion" for persisting the results from an Oracle 9i stored procedure using Apac

  Hello, I am developing a Java servlet which calls an Oracle stored procedure. The stored procedure is likely to "grow" over time, and I have concerns the amount of time taken to "display the results on a web page". While I am at the implementation stage, I would like some suggestions of a Persistence framework which will work on Apache Tomcat 5.5? I see two approaches to persisting the database results. A scheduled database query every N minutes, or something which utilises triggers. Hibernate seems like the obvious answer, but I have never called stored procedures from Hibernate (HQL and Criteria). Is there a more appropriate framework which can be used? Thank you. cheers Miles.

• .NET Database Apps: Your Preferred Setup

  I'm struggling to settle into a pattern for developing typical database driven apps in C# and Visual Studio. There are so many ways to set them up, using drag/drop datasets and adapters or writing the queries manually in ADO.NET or Linq to SQL, Linq to Entities, to bind or not to data bind etc etc. Where to store the connection string, in app.config or in a method or both etc etc. So many tutorials and all of them are different. Everytime I write something I start hating the way it looks and works, so I scrap it and start over. It's getting a bit tedious. Maybe it's alittle of the OCD in me. Would any of you professional developers out there share your method of setting up and structuring your database logic and maybe some sample code? It's really how to go about organizing the code and the method(s) of interacting with SQL that I'm trying to get into a routine with, one that works and won't get me laughed at by someone reviewing it.

• Managing Team Development on Shared Website

  I need to know the best way to manage team web-development on a shared server (hostgator). I have done some individual web development on a shared server in the past, and I have always setup SVN through SSH to have a pretty-nice development workflow (version control, quick-commits, work though eclipse/subclipse, etc). However, I also know that with that setup, I had to make some pretty-sophisticated post-commit hooks to export the repository to /public_html; and, therefore, making the repository code testable. This seems like a tedious and error-prone setup for an entire team. I would like to be able to: Easily test the latest code in the repository. Somewhat easily move the code in the repository to production. Use an IDE like eclipse/subclipse to easily work with the repository. With this in mind, does anyone know of a good version-control/repository setup for developing a website with a team of about 4-5 people? Thanks a lot.

• ASP.NET Page Unauthorization for common pages

  Hi I am developing a web application which has form based authentication. All pages needs to be authenticated except AboutUs and ContactUs pages. I configured everything correct except AboutUs and ContactUs pages. Since I am denying all users in authorization section, application is redirecting even if the customer browse AboutUs and ContactUs pages. • Voice Communication over TCP/IP

  Hello, I'm currently developing application using DirectSound for communication on an intranet. I've had working solution using UDP but then my boss told me he wants to use TCP/IP for some reason. I've tried to implement it in pretty much the same way as UDP, but with very little success. What I get is basically just noise. 20% of it is the recorded sound and the rest is just weird noise. My guess for the reason is that TCP needs to read all the accepted data several times until it gets the final sound I can play. Now two questions: Am I on the right tracks? Is it even good idea to use TCP/IP for this kind of application (voice conferencing of sorts)? I'm doing it in C# but I don't think this is language specific.

• Socket : can an asynchronous Receive returns without reading all the bytes I asked for?

  Hi; I was reading an article on Vadym Stetsiak's blog about how to transfer variable length messages with async sockets (url: http://vadmyst.blogspot.com/2008/03/part-2-how-to-transfer-fixed-sized-data.html). He says : What to expect when multiple messages arrive at the server? While dealing with multiple messages one has to remember that receive operation can return arbitrary number of bytes being read from the net. Typically that size is from 0 to specified buffer length in the Receive or BeginReceive methods. So, even if I tell BeginReceive to read 100 bytes, it may read less than that and returns??? I am developing a network-enabled software (TCP/IP), and I always receive the same exact number of bytes I asked for. I don't even understand the logic : why would Receive completes asynchronously if it didn't get every byte I asked for ... just keep waiting. Maybe it has something to do with IP vs TCP?   Having trouble converting an Ilayer to an IPolygon. I am developing a toolbar for ArcMap and I grab a layer via code from the side table of contents. The Layer is a Polygon, but the code won't convert it to a IPolygon. Can anyone help me out? This is the code I am using to try and convert it to a IPolygon... • Android and SQLite using the SQLiteOpenHelper

  I have a SQLite database, and several tables within that database. I am developing a DBAdapter for each table within the database. (reference Reto Meier's Professional Android 2 Application Development, Listing 7.1). I am using the adb shell to interface with the database from the command line and see that the database is being populated as I expect. Occasionally, I want to drop a table so that I can ensure it's being built properly, from scratch. The problem is that SQLiteOpenHelper only checks to see if the database exists. Is there a typical solution to writing a helper to also see that the table(s) exists? Basically once I drop a table, the helper checks to see that the database exists and assumes all is well. Also, the CREATE_DATABASE string used in the reference above only creates the one table. Should I consider using the DBAdapter for an adapter to ALL of my tables? That doesn't seem as clean to me. • Load a controller into an other controller in cakephp

  im developing a web application, using multiple pages, each with their own controller. The problem now is that there are some variables in a controller, created for one page, that are required for an other page ( with a different controller). Therefor i need to load one controller into the other one. I did this by adding App::import('Controller', 'sections'); $sections= new sectionsController; $sections-constructClasses(); to the controller, but this doens't seem to work.. • Distributing WPF apps to a legacy user base: How seamless is it?

  I'm considering developing a WPF application, to be hosted by a legacy Windows app (C++), and I'm trying to get a better sense of how feasible it'll be to do so, given the broad user base I'm targeting. Knowing WPF targets .NET 3.5, I'm looking for some insight as to what the field looks like right now -- who's already got the runtime, whether it's distributed by Windows Update, if so, how (e.g., as an optional or required download, to which operating systems, etc.), whether XP pre-XP2 supports it (and how), and so on. The current version's got many thousands of users, using all manner of Windows operating systems, and while I'd very much like to leverage WPF to breathe some life into their user experience, I want to make sure I'm not shutting anyone out by doing so, or burdening them with a download they might have to do manually. I realize most, or all, of this information's out there already, in various places, but I figured I'd ask here first, since I'm sure some of you've probably already gone down this road and have valuable experiences to share. • Attach fancybox/lightbox/idontknowbox function on an element

  I'm developing a jquery gallery, and I want to parametrize the highlighter function to support any kind of lightboxes (fancybox for example). In my defaults I did something like: $.fn.mygallery.defaults = { functionHighlighter: null } so in the code, creating the item, I'll check this property, and if it's setted to a function, I want to call it on the element: if ((typeof opt.functionHighlighter) === "function") { opt.functionHighlighter.call(link); } where link is the anchor element containing the miniature image, with href setted to the original image. In my idea, when the plugin is called, I set the function with: $("#gallery").mygallery({ functionHighlighter: $.fancybox }); but the "call" on the functionHighlighter executes directly the fancybox, that returns an empty area. What I want to emulate is the execution of link.fancybox(); that correctly builds the plugin on link. Any ideas?

• Gtk+ vs Qt language bindings

  Put shortly: For those familiar with language bindings in Qt and Gtk+. E.g. python and ruby. Are there any quality or capability difference? More background: I know C++ and Qt very well. Minimal experience with Gtk+. I know C++ is not ideal for language bindings due to the lack of a well defined ABI (application binary interface). I also read that Gtk+ was designed to be bound to other languages. So I wonder how this manifets itself in practice. Are the Gtk+ bindings better maintained or work better in some way than their Qt counterparts? I am presently quite interested in the Go language, and they have started developing Gtk+ bindings. However C++ bindings is far away. It makes me wonder whether learning Gtk+ is worth it.

• Include everything, Separate with "using"

  I'm developing a C++ library. It got me thinking of the ways Java and C# handle including different components of the libraries. For example, Java uses "import" to allow use of classes from other packages, while C# simply uses "using" to import entire modules. My questions is, would it be a good idea to #include everything in the library in one massive include and then just use the using directive to import specific classes and modules? Or would this just be down right crazy? EDIT: Good responses so far, here are a few mitigating factors which I feel add to this idea: 1) Internal #includes are kept as normal (short and to the point) 2) The file which includes everything is optionally supplied with the library to those who wish to use it3) You could optionally make the big include file part of the pre-compiled header

• Adding controls dynamically at design time vb.net

  I have been developing some custom smart tags. I am using a DesignerActionMethodItem which gets me to a fired method in code. When I try to hit the controls.Add the control is added but it seems the designer is unaware of it. It is never serialized and it goes away when the form is refreshed in the designer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am sort of stuck and google hasn't helped me. Please don't send me anything about smart tags that has nothing to do with adding controls dynamically at design time, I have already read so many looking for this.

  Hi, I'm currently developing a website and the main navigation is made up of image links because the font used for them isn't standard. My client's only worry is will this mess up search engine optimization? Can I just add alt text to the images like "link 1" or use the name attribute of the anchor tag? Or would it be better to just have the navigation as anchor tags with the names of the links in them like: <a href="...">link 1</a>? What i want is follow some design pattern or architecture that will be help me in decoupling my code. I have idea about MVC and MVP architectures for Web App but i need different from that. I want to use OOPS concepts using abstract classes and interfaces, polymorphism etc in my app but not MVC and MVP. I dont know why?
