  • Simplifying Human Capital Management with Mobile Applications

    - by HCM-Oracle
By Aaron Green If you're starting to think 'mobility' is a recurring theme in your reading, you'd be right. For those who haven't started to build organisational capabilities to leverage it, it's fair to say you're late to the party. The good news: better late than never. Research firm eMarketer says the worldwide smartphone audience will total 1.75 billion this year, while communications technology and services provider Ericsson suggests smartphones will triple to 5.6 billion globally by 2019. It should be no surprise, smart phone adoption is reaching the farthest corners of the globe; the subsequent impact of enterprise applications enabled by these devices is driving business performance improvement and will continue to do so. Companies using advanced workforce analytics can add significantly to the bottom line, while impacting customer satisfaction, quality and productivity. It's a statement that makes most business leaders sit forward in their chairs. Achieving these three standards is like sipping The Golden Elixir for the business world. No-one would argue their importance. So what are 'advanced workforce analytics?' Simply, they're unprecedented access to workforce trends and performance markers. Many are made possible by a mobile world and the enterprise applications that come with it on smart devices. Some refer to it as 'the consumerisation of IT'. As this phenomenon has matured and become more widely appreciated it has impacted the spectrum of functional units within an enterprise differently, but powerfully. Whether it's sales, HR, marketing, IT, or operations, all have benefited from a more mobile approach. It has been the catalyst for improvement in, and management of, the employee experience. The net result of which is happier customers. The obvious benefits but the lesser realised impact Most people understand that mobility allows for greater efficiency and productivity, collaboration and flexibility, but how that translates into business outcomes within the various functional groups is lesser known. In actuality mobility has helped galvanise partnerships between cross-functional groups within the enterprise. Where in some quarters it was once feared mobility could fragment a workforce, its rallying cry of support is coming from what you might describe as an unlikely source - HR. As the bedrock of an enterprise, it is conceivable HR might contemplate the possible negative impact of a mobile workforce that no-longer sits in an office, at the same desks every day. After all, who would know what they were doing or saying? How would they collaborate? It's reasonable to see why HR might have a legitimate claim to try and retain as much 'perceived control' as possible. The reality however is mobility has emancipated human capital and its management. Mobility and enterprise applications are expediting decision making. Google calls it Zero Moment of Truth, or ZMOT. It enables smoother operation and can contribute to faster growth. From a collaborative perspective, with the growing use of enterprise social media, which in many cases is being driven by HR, workforce planning and the tangible impact of change is much easier to map. This in turn provides a platform from which individuals and teams can thrive. With more agility and ability to anticipate, staff satisfaction and retention is higher, and real time feedback constant. The management team can save time, energy and costs with more accurate data, which is then intelligently applied across the workforce to truly engage with staff, customers and partners. From a human capital management (HCM) perspective, mobility can help you close the loop on true talent management. It can enhance what managers can offer and what employees can provide in return. It can create nested relationships and powerful partnerships. IT and HR - partners and stewards of mobility One effect of enterprise mobility is an evolution in the nature of the relationship between HR and IT from one of service provision to partnership. The reason for the dynamic shift is largely due to the 'bring your own device' (BYOD) movement, which is transitioning to a 'bring your own application' (BYOA) scenario. As enterprise technology has in some ways reverse-engineered its solutions to help manage this situation, the partnership between IT (the functional owner) and HR (the strategic enabler) is deeply entrenched. And it has to be. The CIO and the HR leader are faced with compliance and regulatory issues and concerns around information security and personal privacy on a daily basis, complicated by global reach and varied domestic legislation. There are tens of thousands of new mobile apps entering the market each month and, unlike many consumer applications which get downloaded but are often never opened again after initial perusal, enterprise applications are being relied upon by functional groups, not least by HR to enhance people management. It requires a systematic approach across all applications in use within the enterprise in order to ensure they're used to best effect. No turning back, and no desire to With real time analytics on performance and the ability for immediate feedback, there is no turning back for managers. In my experience with Oracle, our customers' operational efficiency is at record levels. It's clear as a result of the combination of individual KPIs and organisational goals, CIOs have been able to give HR leaders the ability to build predictive models that feed into an enterprise organisations' evolving strategy. It also helps them ensure regulatory compliance much more easily. Once an arduous task, with mobile enabled automation and quality data, compliance is simpler. Their world has changed for the better. For the CIO, mobility also assists them to optimise performance. While it doesn't come without challenges, mobile-enabled applications and the native experience users have with them means employees don't need high-level technical expertise to train users. It reduces the training and engagement required from the IT team so they can focus on other things that deliver value to the bottom line; all the while lowering the cost of assets and related maintenance work by simplifying processes. Rewards of a mobile enterprise outweigh risks With mobile tools allowing us to increasingly integrate our personal and professional lives, terms like "office hours" are becoming irrelevant, so work/life balance is a cultural must. Enterprises are expected to offer tools that enable workers to access information from anywhere, at any time, from any device. Employees want simplicity and convenience but it doesn't stop at private enterprise. This is a societal shift. Governments, which traditionally have been known to be slower to adopt newer technology, are also offering support for local businesses to go mobile. Several state government websites have advice on how to create mobile apps and more. And as recently as last week the Victorian Minister for Technology Gordon Rich-Phillips unveiled his State government's ICT roadmap for the next two years, which details an increased use of the public cloud, as well as mobile communications, and improved access to online data-sets. Tech giants are investing significantly in solutions designed to simplify mobile deployment and enablement. The mobility trend is creating a wave of change in the industry and driving transformation in the enterprise. If you're not on that wave, the business risk continues to rise as your competitiveness drops. • Restructuring a large Chrome Extension/WebApp

    - by A.M.K
I have a very complex Chrome Extension that has gotten too large to maintain in its current format. I'd like to restructure it, but I'm 15 and this is the first webapp or extension of it's type I've built so I have no idea how to do it. TL;DR: I have a large/complex webapp I'd like to restructure and I don't know how to do it. Should I follow my current restructure plan (below)? Does that sound like a good starting point, or is there a different approach that I'm missing? Should I not do any of the things I listed? While it isn't relevant to the question, the actual code is on Github and the extension is on the webstore. The basic structure is as follows: index.html <html> <head> <link href="css/style.css" rel="stylesheet" /> <!-- This holds the main app styles --> <link href="css/widgets.css" rel="stylesheet" /> <!-- And this one holds widget styles --> </head> <body class="unloaded"> <!-- Low-level base elements are "hardcoded" here, the unloaded class is used for transitions and is removed on load. i.e: --> <div class="tab-container" tabindex="-1"> <!-- Tab nav --> </div> <!-- Templates for all parts of the application and widgets are stored as elements here. I plan on changing these to <script> elements during the restructure since <template>'s need valid HTML. --> <template id="template.toolbar"> <!-- Template content --> </template> <!-- Templates end --> <!-- Plugins --> <script type="text/javascript" src="js/plugins.js"></script> <!-- This contains the code for all widgets, I plan on moving this online and downloading as necessary soon. --> <script type="text/javascript" src="js/widgets.js"></script> <!-- This contains the main application JS. --> <script type="text/javascript" src="js/script.js"></script> </body> </html> widgets.js (initLog || (window.initLog = [])).push([new Date().getTime(), "A log is kept during page load so performance can be analyzed and errors pinpointed"]); // Widgets are stored in an object and extended (with jQuery, but I'll probably switch to underscore if using Backbone) as necessary var Widgets = { 1: { // Widget ID, this is set here so widgets can be retreived by ID id: 1, // Widget ID again, this is used after the widget object is duplicated and detached size: 3, // Default size, medium in this case order: 1, // Order shown in "store" name: "Weather", // Widget name interval: 300000, // Refresh interval nicename: "weather", // HTML and JS safe widget name sizes: ["tiny", "small", "medium"], // Available widget sizes desc: "Short widget description", settings: [ { // Widget setting specifications stored as an array of objects. These are used to dynamically generate widget setting popups. type: "list", nicename: "location", label: "Location(s)", placeholder: "Enter a location and press Enter" } ], config: { // Widget settings as stored in the tabs object (see script.js for storage information) size: "medium", location: ["San Francisco, CA"] }, data: {}, // Cached widget data stored locally, this lets it work offline customFunc: function(cb) {}, // Widgets can optionally define custom functions in any part of their object refresh: function() {}, // This fetches data from the web and caches it locally in data, then calls render. It gets called after the page is loaded for faster loads render: function() {} // This renders the widget only using information from data, it's called on page load. } }; script.js (initLog || (window.initLog = [])).push([new Date().getTime(), "These are also at the end of every file"]); // Plugins, extends and globals go here. i.e. Number.prototype.pad = .... var iChrome = function(refresh) { // The main iChrome init, called with refresh when refreshing to not re-run libs iChrome.Status.log("Starting page generation"); // From now on iChrome.Status.log is defined, it's used in place of the initLog iChrome.CSS(); // Dynamically generate CSS based on settings iChrome.Tabs(); // This takes the tabs stored in the storage (see fetching below) and renders all columns and widgets as necessary iChrome.Status.log("Tabs rendered"); // These will be omitted further along in this excerpt, but they're used everywhere // Checks for justInstalled => show getting started are run here /* The main init runs the bare minimum required to display the page, this sets all non-visible or instantly need things (such as widget dragging) on a timeout */ iChrome.deferredTimeout = setTimeout(function() { iChrome.deferred(refresh); // Pass refresh along, see above }, 200); }; iChrome.deferred = function(refresh) {}; // This calls modules one after the next in the appropriate order to finish rendering the page iChrome.Search = function() {}; // Modules have a base init function and are camel-cased and capitalized iChrome.Search.submit = function(val) {}; // Methods within modules are camel-cased and not capitalized /* Extension storage is async and fetched at the beginning of plugins.js, it's then stored in a variable that iChrome.Storage processes. The fetcher checks to see if processStorage is defined, if it is it gets called, otherwise settings are left in iChromeConfig */ var processStorage = function() { iChrome.Storage(function() { iChrome.Templates(); // Templates are read from their elements and held in a cache iChrome(); // Init is called }); }; if (typeof iChromeConfig == "object") { processStorage(); } Objectives of the restructure Memory usage: Chrome apparently has a memory leak in extensions, they're trying to fix it but memory still keeps on getting increased every time the page is loaded. The app also uses a lot on its own. Code readability: At this point I can't follow what's being called in the code. While rewriting the code I plan on properly commenting everything. Module interdependence: Right now modules call each other a lot, AFAIK that's not good at all since any change you make to one module could affect countless others. Fault tolerance: There's very little fault tolerance or error handling right now. If a widget is causing the rest of the page to stop rendering the user should at least be able to remove it. Speed is currently not an issue and I'd like to keep it that way. How I think I should do it The restructure should be done using Backbone.js and events that call modules (i.e. on storage.loaded = init). Modules should each go in their own file, I'm thinking there should be a set of core files that all modules can rely on and call directly and everything else should be event based. Widget structure should be kept largely the same, but maybe they should also be split into their own files. AFAIK you can't load all templates in a folder, therefore they need to stay inline. Grunt should be used to merge all modules, plugins and widgets into one file. Templates should also all be precompiled. Question: Should I follow my current restructure plan? Does that sound like a good starting point, or is there a different approach that I'm missing? Should I not do any of the things I listed? Do applications written with Backbone tend to be more intensive (memory and speed) than ones written in Vanilla JS? Also, can I expect to improve this with a proper restructure or is my current code about as good as can be expected?

  • Using java to create a dynamic rich:panelMenu

    - by Mark Lewis
Hail This attempt at using component libs to access a Map<String, ArrayList<String>> <rich:panelMenu style="width:35%" mode="ajax" iconExpandedTopGroup="/img/logListIcon.png" iconCollapsedTopGroup="/img/logListIcon.png" iconCollapsedGroup="/img/logListFolderIconClosed.png" iconExpandedGroup="/img/logListFolderIconOpen.png" iconGroupTopPosition="left" iconItem="/img/logFileIcon.png"> <!-- feed iteration --> <ui:repeat items="#{PanelMenu.panelNodes}" var="map"> <rich:panelMenuGroup label="#{map.key}" style="padding-left: 20px;"> <ui:repeat items="${map.value}" var="entry"> <rich:panelMenuItem label="#{entry}" action="#{PanelMenu.updateCurrent}"> <f:param name="current" value="#{entry}" /> </rich:panelMenuItem> </ui:repeat> </rich:panelMenuGroup> </ui:repeat> </rich:panelMenu> <rich:panel style="width:65%" bodyClass="rich-laguna-panel-no-header"> <a4j:outputPanel ajaxRendered="true"> <h:outputText value="#{PanelMenu.currentLog}" id="current" /> </a4j:outputPanel> </rich:panel> resulted in |STDOUT| 2010-03-06 22:46:22,212 | ERROR | [http-8181-2]: Exception in the filter chain javax.servlet.ServletException: com.sun.facelets.component.UIRepeat cannot be cast to org.richfaces.component.UIPanelMenuItem so I think I need to get onto a resource to use FacesContext context = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance(); but as I'm fairly new to both java and jsf I need a bit of help. Can anyone suggest either the (probably small) java method to represent this intention or a really good resource specifically about programming dynamic stuff in RichFaces using java? Naturally I've read the javadocs, but they don't give me a concrete example of some JSF, the associated backing bean java code, and a screen shot of the resulting component. It may be asking a bit much, but I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that with these three, I'd be able to understand the idea and apply it to many other component types in this family. The RF demo doesn't include dynamic panelMenus or drop downs so I'm a bit stumped. • compass-rails 1.03 - TypeError: can't convert nil into String

    - by Romiko
I am running: ruby 1.9.3p392 (2013-02-22) [i386-mingw32] compass-rails 1.0.3 I used the Windows RailsInstaller to install Ruby on Rails Gemfile group :assets do gem 'sass-rails', '~> 3.2.3' gem 'coffee-rails', '~> 3.2.1' gem 'compass-rails','~> 1.0.2' # See https://github.com/sstephenson/execjs#readme for more supported runtimes # gem 'therubyracer', :platforms => :ruby gem 'uglifier', '>= 1.0.3' end I am currently experiencing issues importing sprites. My sprites are in: assets/images/source in my _shared.scss file I have: //Sprites @import "./source/*.png"; $source-sprite-dimensions: true; In my application.scss I have: /* * This is a manifest file that'll be compiled into application.css, which will include all the files * listed below. * * Any CSS and SCSS file within this directory, lib/assets/stylesheets, vendor/assets/stylesheets, * or vendor/assets/stylesheets of plugins, if any, can be referenced here using a relative path. * * You're free to add application-wide styles to this file and they'll appear at the top of the * compiled file, but it's generally better to create a new file per style scope. * *= require_self */ @import "_shared.scss"; @import "baseline.scss"; @import "global.scss"; @import "normalize.scss"; @import "print.scss"; @import "desktop.scss"; @import "tablet.scss"; @import "home.css.scss"; I am also using rails server and not compass watcher. However when I browse to the page at localhost:3000/assets/application.css, I get the following error: body:before { font-weight: bold; content: "\000a TypeError: can't convert nil into String\000a • Dell Optiplex 980 vs. Dell Studio XPS 9000?

    - by Dave
My company is allowing me to upgrade to either the XPS 9000 or the Optiplex 980. I haven't bought an Optiplex in over a decade, and the only thing I can remember is that the Optiplex is really meant for corporate IT environments, and we're not even close being large enough to have IT issues. I think the components might be of higher quality as well, like the motherboard and power supply. The XPS 9000 is about $150 cheaper than the Optiplex, but the Optiplex has 4GB more RAM, a 2nd video card, and an extra year of service. Seems like the Optiplex is a better deal overall, but since I haven't ever used one, I wanted to see what everyone else here thought.

  • "No video with supported format and mime type found" - Firefox - HTML5

    - by mangobug
I am working with django 1.6, python 2.7, firefox 30 and Mac OS 10.10 Beta. When I render the following code <video width="570" height="340" controls="controls"> <source src="/some/path/" type="video/mp4" /> </video> I get an error stating "No video with supported format and mime type found". The same code runs perfectly on Safari and Chrome (yes I still haven't checked IE). I have tried different formats for the uploaded files and looked into ad-ons which might prevent this or different coding mechanisms, though nothing has been helpful. Please help!!!!

  • Disabling X-FRAME-OPTION: SAMEORIGIN HTTP Response Header on SharePoint/PowerPivot xlsviewer.aspx

    - by Daniel Coffman
I need to frame a page being served by SharePoint 2010's xlsviewer.aspx but this page is setting the HTTP response header X-FRAME-OPTION to SAMEORIGIN, so IE8 refuses to render the page in a frame on another domain, which is what I need. It appears that no other pages being served by this SharePoint instance set X-FRAME-OPTIONS, only _layouts/xlsviewer.aspx Where can I change the HTTP headers or framing options for SharePoint or this specific page? Relevant headers: GET //_layouts/xlviewer.aspx?id=whatever.xlsx&DefaultItemOpen=1 is returning: HTTP/1.1 200 OK . . . • Installing Paperclip - "undefined method `has_attached_file` for" - Ruby on Rails

    - by bgadoci
I just installed the plugin for Paperclip and I am getting an error message "undefined method has_attached_file for. Not sure why I am getting this. Here is the full error message. NoMethodError (undefined method `has_attached_file' for #<Class:0x10338acd0>): /Users/bgadoci/.gem/ruby/1.8/gems/will_paginate-2.3.12/lib/will_paginate/finder.rb:170:in `method_missing' app/models/post.rb:2 app/controllers/posts_controller.rb:50:in `show' For some reason it is referencing the will_paginate gem. From what I can find, it seems that either there is something wrong w/ my PostsController#index or perhaps a previously attempt at installing the gem instead of the plugin (in which case I have read I should be able to remedy through the /config/environments.rb file somehow). I didn't think that previous gem installation would matter as I did it in an old version of the site that I trashed before installing the plugin. In the current version of the site I show that the Table has been updated with the Paperclip columns after migration. Here is my code: PostsController#index def index @tag_counts = Tag.count(:group => :tag_name, :order => 'count_all DESC', :limit => 20) conditions, joins = {}, :votes @vote_counts = Vote.count(:group => :post_title, :order => 'count_all DESC', :limit => 20) conditions, joins = {}, :votes unless(params[:tag_name] || "").empty? conditions = ["tags.tag_name = ? • Paying great programmers more than average programmers

    - by Kelly French
It's fairly well recognized that some programmers are up to 10 times more productive than others. Joel mentions this topic on his blog. There is a whole blog devoted to the idea of the "10x productive programmer". In years since the original study, the general finding that "There are order-of-magnitude differences among programmers" has been confirmed by many other studies of professional programmers (Curtis 1981, Mills 1983, DeMarco and Lister 1985, Curtis et al. 1986, Card 1987, Boehm and Papaccio 1988, Valett and McGarry 1989, Boehm et al 2000). Fred Brooks mentions the wide range in the quality of designers in his "No Silver Bullet" article, The differences are not minor--they are rather like the differences between Salieri and Mozart. Study after study shows that the very best designers produce structures that are faster, smaller, simpler, cleaner, and produced with less effort. The differences between the great and the average approach an order of magnitude. The study that Brooks cites is: H. Sackman, W.J. Erikson, and E.E. Grant, "Exploratory Experimental Studies Comparing Online and Offline Programming Performance," Communications of the ACM, Vol. 11, No. 1 (January 1968), pp. 3-11. The way programmers are paid by employers these days makes it almost impossible to pay the great programmers a large multiple of what the entry-level salary is. When the starting salary for a just-graduated entry-level programmer, we'll call him Asok (From Dilbert), is $40K, even if the top programmer, we'll call him Linus, makes $120K that is only a multiple of 3. I'd be willing to be that Linus does much more than 3 times what Asok does, so why wouldn't we expect him to get paid more as well? Here is a quote from Stroustrup: "The companies are complaining because they are hurting. They can't produce quality products as cheaply, as reliably, and as quickly as they would like. They correctly see a shortage of good developers as a part of the problem. What they generally don't see is that inserting a good developer into a culture designed to constrain semi-skilled programmers from doing harm is pointless because the rules/culture will constrain the new developer from doing anything significantly new and better." This leads to two questions. I'm excluding self-employed programmers and contractors. If you disagree that's fine but please include your rationale. It might be that the self-employed or contract programmers are where you find the top-10 earners, but please provide a explanation/story/rationale along with any anecdotes. [EDIT] I thought up some other areas in which talent/ability affects pay. Financial traders (commodities, stock, derivatives, etc.) designers (fashion, interior decorators, architects, etc.) professionals (doctor, lawyer, accountant, etc.) sales Questions: Why aren't the top 1% of programmers paid like A-list movie stars? What would the industry be like if we did pay the "Smart and gets things done" programmers 6, 8, or 10 times what an intern makes? [Footnote: I posted this question after submitting it to the Stackoverflow podcast. It was included in episode 77 and I've written more about it as a Codewright's Tale post 'Of Rockstars and Bricklayers'] Epilogue: It's probably unfair to exclude contractors and the self-employed. One aspect of the highest earners in other fields is that they are free-agents. The competition for their skills is what drives up their earning power. This means they can not be interchangeable or otherwise treated as a plug-and-play resource. I liked the example in one answer of a major league baseball team trying to field two first-basemen. Also, something that Joel mentioned in the Stackoverflow podcast (#77). There are natural dynamics to shrink any extreme performance/pay ranges between the highs and lows. One is the peer pressure of organizations to pay within a given range, another is the likelyhood that the high performer will realize their undercompensation and seek greener pastures.

  • Set Firefox viewport size

    - by Frenk
I thought this would be easy, but turns out it's not. I need to set the Firefox viewport size to a given value (larger than my screen resolution). What I want is not to enlarge the application window, but to enlarge the size available to the html content. The viewport won't be physically larger, but will "tell" the html that it is, so that webpages will take more space (obviously making scrollbars visible). For example, let's say my physical Firefox window is 800x600 px. I'd like to set "viewport size=2", then the available space for the html to render would be 1600x1200. Web Developer has a resize feature but it doesn't work when you set a size larger than your screen resolution (in Windows 7). Thanks in advance (I hope my explanation makes some sense).

  • Accessing microsoft office web apps (specifically OneNote) from iphone or android

    - by Howiecamp
I'm trying to access some OneNote notebooks from the iphone and android browsers. On the iphone I can't seem to open the notebook and see it's text. When i click on the notebook it wants to download it And it's a file type that the browser can't understand. When using android the browser crashes everytime i click on the notebook. Interestingly this happens no matter which browser i use on android - The stock browser, skyfire and dolphin all crash the same at this point. I've also tried clicking on the "desktop version" link which forces the app to render the desktop version rather than the mobile version but same result. Finally i tried changing dolphin and skyfire to emulate iphone in firefox but again same results. Has anyone got this working?

  • Uploading images from Flex to Rails using Paperclip

    - by 23tux
Hi everyone, I'm looking for a way to upload images that were created in my flex app to rails. I've tried to use paperclip, but it don't seem to work. I've got this tutorial here: http://blog.alexonrails.net/?p=218 The problem is, that they are using a FileReference to browse for files on the clients computer. They call the .upload(...) function and send the data to the upload controller. But I'm using a URLLoader to upload a image, that is modified in my Flex-App. First, here is the code from the tutorial: private function selectHandler(event:Event):void { var vars:URLVariables = new URLVariables(); var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest(uri); request.method = URLRequestMethod.POST; vars.description = "My Description"; request.data = vars; var uploadDataFieldName:String = 'filemanager[file]'; fileReference.upload(request, uploadDataFieldName); } I don't know how to set that var uploadDataFieldName:String = 'filemanager[file]'; in a URLLoader. I've got the image data compressed as a JPEG in a ByteArray. It looks like this: public function savePicture():void { var filename:String = "blubblub.jpg"; var vars:URLVariables = new URLVariables(); vars.position = layoutView.currentPicPosition; vars.url = filename; vars.user_id = 1; vars.comic_id = 1; vars.file_content_type = "image/jpeg"; vars.file_file_name = filename; var rawBytes:ByteArray = new JPGEncoder(75).encode(bitmapdata); vars.picture = rawBytes; var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest(Data.SERVER_ADDR + "pictures/upload"); request.method = URLRequestMethod.POST; request.data = vars; var loader:URLLoader = new URLLoader(request); loader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, savePictureHandler); loader.addEventListener(IOErrorEvent.IO_ERROR, errorHandlerUpload); loader.load(request); } If I set the var.picture URLVariable to the bytearray, then I get the error, that the upload is nil. Here is the Rails part: Picture-Model: require 'paperclip' class Picture < ActiveRecord::Base # relations from picture belongs_to :comic belongs_to :user has_many :picture_bubbles has_many :bubbles, :through => :picture_bubbles # attached file for picture upload -> with paperclip plugin has_attached_file :file, :path => "public/system/pictures/:basename.:extension" end and the picture controller with the upload function: class PicturesController < ApplicationController protect_from_forgery :except => :upload def upload @picture = Picture.new(params[:picture]) @picture.position = params[:position] @picture.comic_id = params[:comic_id] @picture.url = params[:url] @picture.user_id = params[:user_id] if @picture.save render(:nothing => true, :status => 200) else render(:nothing => true, :status => 500) end end end Does anyone know how to solve this problem? thx, tux

  • What's causing Remote Access error 807 using rasdial.exe to connect to a PPTP VPN?

    - by Dylan Beattie
I'm using rasdial.exe to connect an offsite server to our VPN. Remote box is a Windows 2008 x64 server; the VPN host at this end is a Watchguard Firebox x750e running Fireware 10.2 It connects fine about 20-30% of the time. The rest of the time I get: Remote Access error 807 - The network connection between your computer and the VPN server was interrupted. This can be caused by a problem in the VPN transmission and is commonly the result of internet latency or simply that your VPN server has reached capacity. Please try to reconnect to the VPN server. If this problem persists, contact the VPN administrator and analyze quality of network connectivity. For more help on this error: Type 'hh netcfg.chm' In help, click Troubleshooting, then Error Messages, then 807 The VPN isn't full, and it's 100Mb dedicated fibre on both ends so I can't believe it's a connectivity issue - especially since I'm RDP'ed into the remote box whilst trying to do this! Any bright ideas as to what might be causing the problem? Thanks, Dylan

  • Parsing GeoRSS Feed with jQuery

    - by senfo
I'm attempting to use the jQuery jFeed plugin for parsing an Atom, GeoRSS feed and I'm running into issues extracting the information I need. For example, I need to extract the summary element and I would like to render the contents in a div on my HTML page. Additionally, I'd like to extract the contents from the georss:point elements and pass them into Google Maps to render them as points on a map. The problem is that it seems jFeed is stripping out the GeoRSS-related information. For example, I can extract the title element without issues, but it seems it doesn't extract the summary or georss:point elements, at all. Following is a snippet of the XML I'm working with: <feed xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom" xmlns:georss="http://www.georss.org/georss"> <title>Search Results from DataWarehouse.HRSA.gov</title> <link rel="self" href="http://datawarehouse.hrsa.gov/HGDWDataWebService/HGDWDataService.aspx?service=HC&zip=20002&radius=10"/> <link rel="alternate" href="http://datawarehouse.hrsa.gov/"/> <author> <name>HRSA Geospatial Data Warehouse</name> </author> <id>tag:datawarehouse.hrsa.gov,2010-04-05:/</id> <updated>2010-04-05T19:25:28-05:00</updated> <entry> <title>Christ House</title> <link href="http://www.christhouse.org" /> <id>tag:datawarehouse.hrsa.gov,2010-04-05:/D388C4C6-FFA4-4091-819B-64D67DC64931</id> <summary type="xhtml"> <div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <div class="vcard"> <div class="fn org">Christ House</div> <div class="adr"> <div class="street-address">1717 Columbia Rd. Am I doing something wrong or was jFeed simply not designed to work the way I want it to?

  • Removing duplicate images (deduplication) - calculating "overlap" of images

    - by jotango
Hello, I have a ton of product images on our file system. Our code removes 100% identical images (or does not allow them to be uploaded). However our sellers often upload items pictures which are very similar, but not exactly. They could have more whitespace, a worse quality (compression), a different size etc. Is there any way I can calculate the degree of overlap between two images, to flag ones for deletion? Kind of like a Levenshtein distance between two images... Any pointers would be very cool. Thanks!

  • Drawing a WPF UserControl with DataBinding to an Image

    - by LorenVS
Hey Everyone, So I'm trying to use a WPF User Control to generate a ton of images from a dataset where each item in the dataset would produce an image... I'm hoping I can set it up in such a way that I can use WPF databinding, and for each item in the dataset, create an instance of my user control, set the dependency property that corresponds to my data item, and then draw the user control to an image, but I'm having problems getting it all working (not sure whether databinding or drawing to the image is my problem) Sorry for the massive code dump, but I've been trying to get this working for a couple of hours now, and WPF just doesn't like me (have to learn at some point though...) My User Control looks like this: <UserControl x:Class="Bleargh.ImageTemplate" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:c="clr-namespace:Bleargh" x:Name="ImageTemplateContainer" Height="300" Width="300"> <Canvas> <TextBlock Canvas.Left="50" Canvas.Top="50" Width="200" Height="25" FontSize="16" FontFamily="Calibri" Text="{Binding Path=Booking.Customer,ElementName=ImageTemplateContainer}" /> <TextBlock Canvas.Left="50" Canvas.Top="100" Width="200" Height="25" FontSize="16" FontFamily="Calibri" Text="{Binding Path=Booking.Location,ElementName=ImageTemplateContainer}" /> <TextBlock Canvas.Left="50" Canvas.Top="150" Width="200" Height="25" FontSize="16" FontFamily="Calibri" Text="{Binding Path=Booking.ItemNumber,ElementName=ImageTemplateContainer}" /> <TextBlock Canvas.Left="50" Canvas.Top="200" Width="200" Height="25" FontSize="16" FontFamily="Calibri" Text="{Binding Path=Booking.Description,ElementName=ImageTemplateContainer}" /> </Canvas> </UserControl> And I've added a dependency property of type "Booking" to my user control that I'm hoping will be the source for the databound values: public partial class ImageTemplate : UserControl { public static readonly DependencyProperty BookingProperty = DependencyProperty.Register("Booking", typeof(Booking), typeof(ImageTemplate)); public Booking Booking { get { return (Booking)GetValue(BookingProperty); } set { SetValue(BookingProperty, value); } } public ImageTemplate() { InitializeComponent(); } } And I'm using the following code to render the control: List<Booking> bookings = Booking.GetSome(); for(int i = 0; i < bookings.Count; i++) { ImageTemplate template = new ImageTemplate(); template.Booking = bookings[i]; RenderTargetBitmap bitmap = new RenderTargetBitmap( (int)template.Width, (int)template.Height, 120.0, 120.0, PixelFormats.Pbgra32); bitmap.Render(template); BitmapEncoder encoder = new PngBitmapEncoder(); encoder.Frames.Add(BitmapFrame.Create(bitmap)); using (Stream s = File.OpenWrite(@"C:\Code\Bleargh\RawImages\" + i.ToString() + ".png")) { encoder.Save(s); } } EDIT: I should add that the process works without any errors whatsoever, but I end up with a directory full of plain-white images, not text or anything... And I have confirmed using the debugger that my Booking objects are being filled with the proper data... EDIT 2: Did something I should have done a long time ago, set a background on my canvas, but that didn't change the output image at all, so my problem is most definitely somehow to do with my drawing code (although there may be something wrong with my databinding too)

  • Marrying Core Animation with OpenGL ES

    - by Ole Begemann
Edit: I suppose instead of the long explanation below I might also ask: Sending -setNeedsDisplay to an instance of CAEAGLLayer does not cause the layer to redraw (i.e., -drawInContext: is not called). Instead, I get this console message: <GLLayer: 0x4d500b0>: calling -display has no effect. Is there a way around this issue? Can I invoke -drawInContext: when -setNeedsDisplay is called? Long explanation below: I have an OpenGL scene that I would like to animate using Core Animation animations. Following the standard approach to animate custom properties in a CALayer, I created a subclass of CAEAGLLayer and defined a property sceneCenterPoint in it whose value should be animated. My layer also holds a reference to the OpenGL renderer: #import <UIKit/UIKit.h> #import <QuartzCore/QuartzCore.h> #import "ES2Renderer.h" @interface GLLayer : CAEAGLLayer { ES2Renderer *renderer; } @property (nonatomic, retain) ES2Renderer *renderer; @property (nonatomic, assign) CGPoint sceneCenterPoint; I then declare the property @dynamic to let CA create the accessors, override +needsDisplayForKey: and implement -drawInContext: to pass the current value of the sceneCenterPoint property to the renderer and ask it to render the scene: #import "GLLayer.h" @implementation GLLayer @synthesize renderer; @dynamic sceneCenterPoint; + (BOOL) needsDisplayForKey:(NSString *)key { if ([key isEqualToString:@"sceneCenterPoint"]) { return YES; } else { return [super needsDisplayForKey:key]; } } - (void) drawInContext:(CGContextRef)ctx { self.renderer.centerPoint = self.sceneCenterPoint; [self.renderer render]; } ... (If you have access to the WWDC 2009 session videos, you can review this technique in session 303 ("Animated Drawing")). Now, when I create an explicit animation for the layer on the keyPath @"sceneCenterPoint", Core Animation should calculate the interpolated values for the custom properties and call -drawInContext: for each step of the animation: - (IBAction)animateButtonTapped:(id)sender { CABasicAnimation *animation = [CABasicAnimation animationWithKeyPath:@"sceneCenterPoint"]; animation.duration = 1.0; animation.fromValue = [NSValue valueWithCGPoint:CGPointZero]; animation.toValue = [NSValue valueWithCGPoint:CGPointMake(1.0f, 1.0f)]; [self.glView.layer addAnimation:animation forKey:nil]; } At least that is what would happen for a normal CALayer subclass. When I subclass CAEAGLLayer, I get this output on the console for each step of the animation: 2010-12-21 13:59:22.180 CoreAnimationOpenGL[7496:207] <GLLayer: 0x4e0be20>: calling -display has no effect. 2010-12-21 13:59:22.198 CoreAnimationOpenGL[7496:207] <GLLayer: 0x4e0be20>: calling -display has no effect. 2010-12-21 13:59:22.216 CoreAnimationOpenGL[7496:207] <GLLayer: 0x4e0be20>: calling -display has no effect. 2010-12-21 13:59:22.233 CoreAnimationOpenGL[7496:207] <GLLayer: 0x4e0be20>: calling -display has no effect. ... So it seems that, possibly for performance reasons, for OpenGL layers, -drawInContext: is not getting called because these layers do not use the standard -display method to draw themselves. Can anybody confirm that? Is there a way around it? Or can I not use the technique I laid out above? This would mean I would have to implement the animations manually in the OpenGL renderer (which is possible but not as elegant IMO).

  • Packet loss rate with iperf and tcpdump

    - by stefita
I tested a line for its link quality with iperf. The measured speed (UDP port 9005) was 96Mbps, which is fine, because both servers are connected with 100Mbps to the internet. On the other hand the datagram loss rate was shown to be 3.3-3.7%, which I found a little too much. Using a high-speed transfer protocol I recorded the packets on both sides with tcpdump. Than I calculated the packet loss - average 0.25%. Have anyone an explanation, where this big difference may be coming from? What is an acceptable packet loss in your opinion?

  • HDMI-HDMI cable length

    - by alex
I'd like to connect my PC to an HDTV using an HDMI-HDMI cable. The distance between them is about 8 m; is the length going to be an issue? I'm worried the signal might deteriorate over such a distance. Also, does price have any major impact on the signal quality? I'd like to buy an 8-10 m cable for somewhere around 20$. Would such a cheap cable be good for what I want?

  • Why does my sharepoint web part event handler lose the sender value on postback?

    - by vishal shah
    I have a web part which is going to be a part of pair of connected web parts. For simplicity, I am just describing the consumer web part. This web part has 10 link buttons on it. And they are rendered in the Render method instead ofCreateChildControls as this webpart will be receiving values based on input from the provider web part. Each Link Button has a text which is decided dynamically based on the input from provider web part. When I click on any of the Link Buttons, the event handler is triggered but the text on the Link Button shows up as the one set in CreateChildControls. When I trace the code, I see that the CreateChildControls gets called before the event handler (and i think that resets my Link Buttons). How do I get the event handler to show me the dynamic text instead? Here is the code... public class consWebPart : Microsoft.SharePoint.WebPartPages.WebPart { private bool _error = false; private LinkButton[] lkDocument = null; public consWebPart() { this.ExportMode = WebPartExportMode.All; } protected override void CreateChildControls() { if (!_error) { try { base.CreateChildControls(); lkDocument = new LinkButton[101]; for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++) { lkDocument[i] = new LinkButton(); lkDocument[i].ID = "lkDocument" + i; lkDocument[i].Text = "Initial Text"; lkDocument[i].Style.Add("margin", "10 10 10 10px"); this.Controls.Add(lkDocument[i]); lkDocument[i].Click += new EventHandler(lkDocument_Click); } } catch (Exception ex) { HandleException(ex); } } } protected override void Render(HtmlTextWriter writer) { writer.Write("<table><tr>"); for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++) { writer.Write("<tr>"); lkDocument[i].Text = "LinkButton" + i; writer.Write("<td>"); lkDocument[i].RenderControl(writer); writer.Write("</td>"); writer.Write("</tr>"); } writer.Write("</table>"); } protected void lkDocument_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { string strsender = sender.ToString(); LinkButton lk = (LinkButton)sender; } protected override void OnLoad(EventArgs e) { if (!_error) { try { base.OnLoad(e); this.EnsureChildControls(); } catch (Exception ex) { HandleException(ex); } } } private void HandleException(Exception ex) { this._error = true; this.Controls.Clear(); this.Controls.Add(new LiteralControl(ex.Message)); } }

  • Dual monitors through 1 HDMI port

    - by Carlos
I currently have a Dell Studio XPS 13 laptop connected to a 24" HP monitor (w2448hc). Im thinking on getting a second one, however am wondering what i need for the setup (hardware wise). Also I was wondering it there is any down side to it, or something i should be aware of. For example, image quality loss, GPU overloading, or anything important I should know. More than anything Im interested in your advice. Also the monitors do have built in speakers (HDMI sound output), is the sound going to be reproduced by only one monitor or both? Specs Model: Dell Studio XPS 13 OS: Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64-Bit CPU: Intel® CoreTM 2 Duo P8600 (2.4GHz, 3MB L2 Cache, 1067MHz FSB) Chipset: NVIDIA® GeForce® MCP79MX RAM: 4GB 1067MHz DDR3 SDRAM Graphics: SLi NVIDIA® GeForce® 9500M - 256MB Thanks for your advice, if there is anything additional i need to buy an you have a personal preference pass the brand name so i can check it out. Thanks!

  • Videoediting slow on windows with HD footage in .MOV format

    - by Joakim
My camera is a Canon 5D mark II that serves me .mov files in HD. But these are a pain in the neck to edit on my pc. I have tried Premier, Vegas, Pinnacle, etc, but it is almost impossible to edit and do a movie. I do have a good computer with Windows7 but that doesn't help me, and I don't want to buy a new monster pc just for that task. Question: I could convert the files, but what would be the best format? I don't want to lose much quality. Anyone have any ideas?

  • Automating an SSRS 2008 R2 Report Snapshots and run report with most recent data

    - by Mr Shoubs
I would like to automate a report snapshot, but there is only an option to take a snapshot in the Report History Tab. All the resources I've found suggest I need to go to processing options and select "Render this report from a snapshot". But I don't want to do that - when I go to a report, I want to get the most recent data. However daily at midnight I'd like to take a snapshot and store it in the history in case I want to compare the reports as of midnight for the last few weeks. Or am I doing this wrong and have to create a subscription instead? Note: this is for an auditing database and has way to much data in to query a range with more than 1 day in it - reports are restricted as such. (1 day has over 1 million rows on it's own).

  • Samplegrabber works fine on AVI/MPEG files but choppy with WMV

    - by jomtois
I have been using the latest version of the WPFMediaKit. What I am trying to do is write a sample application that will use the Samplegrabber to capture the video frames of video files so I can have them as individual Bitmaps. So far, I have had good luck with the following code when constructing and rendering my graph. However, when I use this code to play back a .wmv video file, when the samplegrabber is attached, it will play back jumpy or choppy. If I comment out the line where I add the samplegrabber filter, it works fine. Again, it works with the samplegrabber correctly with AVI/MPEG, etc. protected virtual void OpenSource() { FrameCount = 0; /* Make sure we clean up any remaining mess */ FreeResources(); if (m_sourceUri == null) return; string fileSource = m_sourceUri.OriginalString; if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(fileSource)) return; try { /* Creates the GraphBuilder COM object */ m_graph = new FilterGraphNoThread() as IGraphBuilder; if (m_graph == null) throw new Exception("Could not create a graph"); /* Add our prefered audio renderer */ InsertAudioRenderer(AudioRenderer); var filterGraph = m_graph as IFilterGraph2; if (filterGraph == null) throw new Exception("Could not QueryInterface for the IFilterGraph2"); IBaseFilter renderer = CreateVideoMixingRenderer9(m_graph, 1); IBaseFilter sourceFilter; /* Have DirectShow find the correct source filter for the Uri */ var hr = filterGraph.AddSourceFilter(fileSource, fileSource, out sourceFilter); DsError.ThrowExceptionForHR(hr); /* We will want to enum all the pins on the source filter */ IEnumPins pinEnum; hr = sourceFilter.EnumPins(out pinEnum); DsError.ThrowExceptionForHR(hr); IntPtr fetched = IntPtr.Zero; IPin[] pins = { null }; /* Counter for how many pins successfully rendered */ int pinsRendered = 0; m_sampleGrabber = (ISampleGrabber)new SampleGrabber(); SetupSampleGrabber(m_sampleGrabber); hr = m_graph.AddFilter(m_sampleGrabber as IBaseFilter, "SampleGrabber"); DsError.ThrowExceptionForHR(hr); /* Loop over each pin of the source filter */ while (pinEnum.Next(pins.Length, pins, fetched) == 0) { if (filterGraph.RenderEx(pins[0], AMRenderExFlags.RenderToExistingRenderers, IntPtr.Zero) >= 0) pinsRendered++; Marshal.ReleaseComObject(pins[0]); } Marshal.ReleaseComObject(pinEnum); Marshal.ReleaseComObject(sourceFilter); if (pinsRendered == 0) throw new Exception("Could not render any streams from the source Uri"); /* Configure the graph in the base class */ SetupFilterGraph(m_graph); HasVideo = true; /* Sets the NaturalVideoWidth/Height */ //SetNativePixelSizes(renderer); } catch (Exception ex) { /* This exection will happen usually if the media does * not exist or could not open due to not having the * proper filters installed */ FreeResources(); /* Fire our failed event */ InvokeMediaFailed(new MediaFailedEventArgs(ex.Message, ex)); } InvokeMediaOpened(); } And: private void SetupSampleGrabber(ISampleGrabber sampleGrabber) { FrameCount = 0; var mediaType = new AMMediaType { majorType = MediaType.Video, subType = MediaSubType.RGB24, formatType = FormatType.VideoInfo }; int hr = sampleGrabber.SetMediaType(mediaType); DsUtils.FreeAMMediaType(mediaType); DsError.ThrowExceptionForHR(hr); hr = sampleGrabber.SetCallback(this, 0); DsError.ThrowExceptionForHR(hr); } I have read a few things saying the the .wmv or .asf formats are asynchronous or something. I have attempted inserting a WMAsfReader to decode which works, but once it goes to the VMR9 it gives the same behavior. Also, I have gotten it to work correctly when I comment out the IBaseFilter renderer = CreateVideoMixingRenderer9(m_graph, 1); line and have filterGraph.Render(pins[0]); -- the only drawback is that now it renders in an Activemovie widow of its own instead of my control, however the samplegrabber functions correctly and without any skipping. So I am thinking the bug is in the VMR9 / samplegrabbing somewhere. Any help? I am new to this.
