• Are government programming jobs good?

  I am a passionate software developer and greatly enjoy programming. However I was recently contacted regarding a developer lead position for a government job at NYC for the fire department. The pay is pretty good, and I would assume the position has good job security and stability. But I am hesitant to even go for an interview as it seems like an exaggerated version of Office Space with a lot of Bureaucracy and mindless paper work. The description is as follows: The Lead Applications Developer, supporting the Programming Group, will be responsible for all phases of the system development life cycle including performing system analysis, requirements definition, database design, preparation of scopes of work, and development of project plans. Supervise programming staff and manage projects involving the design, implementation, maintenance, and enhancement of complex Oracle based user applications using Oracle Development tools. Applications will be deployed using Oracle Application Server utilizing programming languages such as JAVA, JSF, JSP, Oracle ADF, PL/SQL, and XML with J2EE and EJB technology. Anyone with previous government experience can share their two cents on this? Thank you.

• Creating excel template 2003 in C# on a machine with both 2003 and 2007 installed.

  I have both 2003 and 2007 Excel versions installed on my machine. The current source code uses Office11 (2003) interop assembly Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.dll to create the Excel template. When I create the template and open in Excel 2007, it opens perfectly.   Using Script Task, I have written a code to create a folder and create a file of msword document inside the created folder. Its working in local machine. But its not working in another server, after I deployed it. The folder is created successfully, but the word document file is not created. for word document creation, I had to refer another dll where I had included an additional namespace "Microsoft.Office.Interop.Word". Is there anything else to do before deployment ?

• enable profiler / Traceon after SQL server restart automatically

  hi, My client is facing some deadlocks while using our application. I want to track all the deadlocks for my research and to solve the deadlocks. i am currently run the SQL profiler for the event deadlock graph to capture the deadlock scenario. the actual problem is that the SQL server gets restarted every day at 2 am, and the profiler stops capturing the events after the restart. by the time i come to office at start the profiler at say 10 am, there could be deadlocks which i could have missed between 2 am and 10 am. so i am looking for a way so i can capture the deadlocks without me starting manually. i thought i could use TRACEON(1204,-1) so that the deadlock events get captured in the SQL Server error logs. But i found that the TRACE capturing too gets disabled after the restart. Is there a way i can capture the deadlocks either by SQL profiler or by using TRACEON without me manually starting the capturing? Nikhil

• VSTO Outlook project

  I currently have an Outlook 2007 VSTO plug-in which needs to write certain values into the registry. I am programmitically downloading and installing a new stationery into Outlook by saving a htm file into the users App Data folder and then updating the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\MailSettings\NewTheme registry key which sets which stationery that is currently in use. So far everything is fine for 2007, but I have checked a PC that is running Outlook 2010, and this registry key is in a different spot. Instead of 12.0 as the version it is 14.0, which makes sense. Is there anyway I can determine what version the plugin is installed in, so that I can write the key based on the correct version in the correct location?!? I haven't been able to find anything on this so far, but surely there is a way..?!? Thanks in advance. Chris

• Fake Shortcuts in Windows - Is there an API? One for C#?

  I'm not sure what they call the fake shortcuts you often see in Windows now. A good example would be the link to any of the Office 2007 programs. You can tell one of these from a regular shortcut because the Target is grayed out and is not a real path. Can you access these through a .NET API? Like ask for the target? or get any of the information stored within it. I think these are somehow related to Windows Installer and Advertised programs.

  I am looking for a magnetic card reader with data storage of about 2 GB. This reader be placed in open under a shade, but would be exposed to temperatures from -5 C to 50 C. Job is to swipe customer loyalty cards issued to regular customers of a gas station. Each time they get gas filled, they will swipe their card, to mark their presence. Swiped data be stored in the reader. And on intervals be transferred to a PC lying in the office. The customer visits data be used to award some gifts or benefits to frequently visiting clients. I know peole prefer MS Excel for it is easy to change the data structure and data value. So I have an idea to use MS Excel as a database IF people follow a general rule to store data.   Hi, Spring mvc is a framework that has been long time out there, it is well documented and proven technology. A lot of web sites are using spring. Seam is a framework based on jsf - rich faces implementation. It has a lot of ajax based components. It uses some heavy stuff like EJB, JPA. All of this is prone to errors and this framework is so slow (at my computer it is almost impossible do develop something because it is really slow, especially redeploying on jboss) But is is very good for back office applications. Does someone have a professional experience with this two frameworks? Can you recommend the better one ? Why? Regards

  [Environment] Server Sharepoint Portal Server 2003 Client Windows XP Internet Explorer 6.0 Microsoft Office 2003 Hello~ Today I received a call from one of my client and she said that she received an alert, "Ambiguous name detected: tempDDE" when attemping to open a doc from library. So I googled some and found solutions from MS and others and modified from Normal.dot to Normal1.dot. But after that, when I opened it again from library another problem happend and it is the doc contents is not loaded. When I click the link of doc, then the WIN?WORD.exe pops up but the contents of the document is not showing up (Silent). I tried some Open the doc file using Word Open Menu (Library Link) = Worked Get the url of the file and open it uing using Word Open Menu = Worked Add the url to Trusted Site = Done but not helped Any advices are welcomed. • Visio 2010 Reverse Engineer Oracle

  I have used Visio 2007 in the past to reverse engineer Oracle databases to get a flow scheme. I believe all Office 2007 products were x86 as well which is where I suspect my issue currently lies. I have since upgraded to Visio 2010 x64 and when I go to reverse engineer something from Oracle it shows up under Installed Visio Drivers but I can't seem to create a data source using it. My assumption here is it is because Oracle doesn't play nicely with x64 and with Visio being compiled as x64 I don't even get the option to use it. Has anyone done this with Visio 2010 x64 and Oracle yet? Or are there other tools you would recommend to reverse engineer and get a model such as the one generated by Visio?

• What software do you use for letter templating and printing?

  In our LOB application there is a very important use case of printing letters, which are then printed and posted out from a mail house (thousands per day). The current situation is that the letter templates are created in Word 97 and fields are mail merged from values in database using a VB.Net application that basically uses word automation. But depending on Word 97 is not a good idea today. We only have a couple of PCs that have Word 97 installed as rest of the company has moved to Office 2007. What software or technology (compatible with .Net) is available today that best suits this scenario. Is it better to do the same thing but move to Word 2007 or PDF or something else. Price may not be a factor. The important thing is that the letter templates must be designed by business users and data to fill placeholders come from DB. A bonus would be to import the hundreds of existing Word 97 letter templates without rewriting them from scratch.

• Non-existent file in limbo prevents push to remote branch (Bazaar VCS)

  Hi! I use Bazaar VCS to version files locally on my notebook. When im in the office I merge the changes to a repository on a windows share and also push all the files there (for backup reasons). My Problem: The last push resulted in an error, because I added a file with a very long filename (I had that problem before ... python doesn't like long filenames). So I removed the file (I didn't need it anyway) and forgot about the problem for a while, because commiting still worked fine. The next time I wanted to push my new revision I got a new error: bzr: ERROR: [Error 3] Das System kann den angegebenen Pfad nicht finden: u'//path/to/remote/branch/.bzr/checkout/limbo/new-8/loooooooongfilename.xls' translation: bzr: ERROR: [Error 3] The system can't find the following path: What I've tried: Deleting the limbo folder-- limbo folder doesn't exist Create the missing path with a dummy-file -- bazaar locks the branch -- unlock -- same problem as before bzr check -- Everything is fine -- No success bzr reconcile -- No success Thanks for reading ;o)

  I'm trying to connect to an MS Access database linked table in VBScript. It works fine connecting the first time on one connection but if I close that connection and open a new one in the same script it gives me an error. test.vbs(13, 1) Microsoft Office Access Database Engine: ODBC--connection to '{Oracle in OraClient10g_home1}DB_NAME' failed. This is some code that triggers the error. TABLE_1 is an ODBC linked table in the test.mdb file. • Why use MVVM???

  Okay, I have been looking into MVVM pattern, and each time I have previously tried looking into it, I gave up for a number of reasons: Unnecessary Extra Long Winded Coding No apparent advantages for coders (no designers in my office. Currently only myself soon to be another coder) Not a lot of resources/documentation of good practices! (Or at least hard to find) Cannot think of a single scenario where this is advantageous. I'm about to give up on it yet again, and thought I'd ask to see if someone answer the reasons above. I honestly can't see an advantage of using this for a single/partner coding. Even in complex projects with 10's of windows. To me the DataSet is a good enough view and binding like in the answer by Brent following question

• Reinstalling Applications after Win 7 installation [closed]

  I'm preparing to upgrade to Win 7 and am trying to ensure that I will be able to reinstall all the relevant applications. Since most applications require product keys, I'm curious if the installation process for Win 7 preserves those keys in any way (say for Office 2007,...) or do I have to locate and reenter every key? Second, for appications that require a key and then check with their home server (Norton Internet Security, for example). Even if I have the key, how do I convince the server that I'm not trying to reuse an application that has a single use license? Thanks, --Don

• Tips on debugging copy and paste into powerpoint 2010

  I have a custom application in C++ that has been used to successfully copy-and-paste an object from the application into MS Office 2003 and 2007 (Word, Excel and PowerPoint). The object opens in our own custom activeX control. Now with windows XP and PowerPoint 2010, nothing happens on the cut-and-paste. I have tried turning off the smart copy/paste to no avail. Copy/paste works with Word and Excel 2010. Do you have tips on how to debug this? Thanks Andrew

• Save a binary file in SQL Server as BLOB and text (or get the text from Full-Text index)

  Currently we are saving files (PDF, DOC) into the database as BLOB fields. I would like to be able to retrieve the raw text of the file to be able to manipulate it for hit-highlighting and other functions. Does anyone know of a simple way to either parse out the files and save the raw text on save, either via SQL or .net code. I have found that Adobe has a filtdump utility that will convert the PDF to text. Filtdump seems to be a command line tool, and i don't see a way to use a file stream. And what would the extractor be for Office documents and other file types? -or- Is there a way to pull out the raw text from the Full text index? Note i am trying to build a .net & MSSql solution without having to use a third party tool such as Lucene

  Is it possible to write C# code as below and send email using mnetwork in different country? MSExchangeWebServiceURL = mail.something.com/ews/exchange.asmx It's a web service URL. This works great when I run the same code from home network, my friends home network anywhere around, but when I run it from my client's location in Columbia it fails. I have a valid user name and password on that Exchange Server. Is there any configuration that I can set to achieve this? BTW this code below works when I run it within office network and any network within any home network. I have tried it at least with five friends network in Plano, Texas. I want this code to work running from any network in another country. My client in Columbia can connect to the web service using a browser using the same user name and password, but when I run the code above it is not able to connect to our web service.
