• Exchange enrypted messages with a single recipient [portable]

  I need to exchange encrypted messages with another party. These would be in the form of email like communication (not instant chat). The solution needs to be portable (USB stick). I've tried "Portable Thunderbird/Enigmail/Gnupg/Hotmail account" but it's just impossible to setup portable, countless meaningless error messages. Anyway, I would prefer something more straightforward. Notes: We won't know each others IP addresses. Our computers will often be switched off. Encryption would ideally be using a common password. Is there a solution to this?

• Procedure entry point EncodePointer could not be located in kernel32.dll

  I get this error when trying to run a program on a Windows computer: Because it's a Dutch Windows version it is in Dutch, but in English it would be something like "Procedure entry point EncodePointer could not be located in kernel32.dll". I've been looking for a solution on the net and I think it has something to do with SP's of Windows. This are the system settings: Does this mean I'm not using any Windows XP Service Pack? I'm working on this for someone else, it's an old computer, not connected to the internet. Should I connect the computer to the internet and install all Windows updates to solve the problem? No other solution?

• Cheapest way to go for somebody who wants to accept payments, but won't be accepting hundreds of ord

  I have a client who lectures, and wants to sell spots to his lecture online. I would preferably like to set him up with a solution that allows me to collect billing information on his site. My experience with e-commerce is in using solutions like Authorize.net, however this does not seem cost effective since I can't imagine he's making a huge profit off of this. I'm afraid he would lose money in the cost of using Authorize.net (or any payment gateway for the matter). I could use google checkout or paypal express, but this would require me to leave his site (although with google checkout, it looks like, from a glance, that I could just submit to their form from my server, and likely with paypal as well, but I don't know if this is against their TOS). What is the most cost-effective solution for accepting credit card payments in this situation?

  One time I searched for Orange Juice in Chrome's Omnibar. Now, every time I start typing Orange, I get the search suggestion: How do I get Chrome to stop offering me this search suggestion? If I need to edit some config file, I can do that. Please don't post answers if you haven't ensured they work first. (This is intended to prevent people from answering "Press Shift-Delete.") Clarification: I'd prefer a solution in which I can selectively delete entries, not just by time segment. I also prefer a solution that does not involve cancelling any Chrome functionality.

• Updating password hashing without forcing a new password for existing users

  You maintain an existing application with an established user base. Over time it is decided that the current password hashing technique is outdated and needs to be upgraded. Furthermore, for UX reasons, you don't want existing users to be forced to update their password. The whole password hashing update needs to happen behind the screen. Assume a 'simplistic' database model for users that contains: ID Email Password How does one go around to solving such a requirement? My current thoughts are: create a new hashing method in the appropriate class update the user table in the database to hold an additional password field Once a user successfully logs in using the outdated password hash, fill the second password field with the updated hash This leaves me with the problem that I cannot reasonable differentiate between users who have and those who have not updated their password hash and thus will be forced to check both. This seems horribly flawed. Furthermore this basically means that the old hashing technique could be forced to stay indefinitely until every single user has updated their password. Only at that moment could I start removing the old hashing check and remove the superfluous database field. I'm mainly looking for some design tips here, since my current 'solution' is dirty, incomplete and what not, but if actual code is required to describe a possible solution, feel free to use any language.

• Data indexing frameworks fit for large E-Commerce applications

  we wrote and still maintain a large E-Commerce application. Our feature list resembles what you would expect from most shops. We'd like to improve some of our features, and now the search/suggestion list functionality (enter some letters, a JScripted suggestion list appears) has caught our eye. Currently, we use http://xapian.org/. It has some drawbacks. Firstly, it's not actually the right solution. It has been created to index documents, not ever-changing data in a granularity that an E-Commerce application would need. Secondly, the load on the database is significant when we reindex all data every night. We'd like a framework that has been designed for indexing database data, which can add to the index easily and without much load, which can supply data changes in the backoffice quickly to the frontend without much load and delay. I'm aware of the fact that Xapian is Open Source and even Free Software, so we could adapt it to our needs if we decided to invest the time and manpower. But taking a quick look around for a solution more suited seems fair, right? Oh, and commercial applications are fine, too. FOSS is not required. Thanks a bunch.

• How do you manage a complexity jump?

  It seems an infrequent but common experience that sometimes you're working on a project and suddenly something turns up unexpectedly, throws a massive spanner in the works and ramps up the complexity a whole lot. For example, I was working on an application that talked to SOAP services on various other machines. I whipped up a prototype that worked fine, then went on to develop a regular front end and generally get everything up and running in a nice, fairly simple and easy to follow fashion. It worked great until we started testing across a wider network and suddenly pages started timing out as the latency of the connections and the time required to perform calculations on remote machines resulted in timed out requests to the soap services. It turned out that we needed to change the architecture to spin requests out onto their own threads and cache the returned data so it could be updated progressively in the background rather than performing calculations on a request by request basis. The details of that scenario are not too important - indeed it's not a great example as it was quite forseeable and people who have written a lot of apps of this type for this type of environment might have anticipated it - except that it illustrates a way that one can start with a simple premise and model and suddenly have an escalation of complexity well into the development of the project. What strategies do you have for dealing with these types of functional changes whose need arises - often as a result of environmental factors rather than specification change - later on in the development process or as a result of testing? How do you balance between avoiding the premature optimisation/ YAGNI/ overengineering risks of designing a solution that mitigates against possible but not necessarily probable issues as opposed to developing a simpler and easier solution that is likely to be as effective but doesn't incorporate preparedness for every possible eventuality?

• Bacula vs. BackupPC

  I have been googling about the differences between them. Bacula has lots of roles BackupPC is easier to configure Bacula works with agent, not rsync (great for Windows backups) It seems that Bacula is most often compared to Amanda though, while BackupPC seems a perfectly lovely and popular backup distribution to. I currently backup my servers with rsnapshot, but I am looking for a professional scalable solution that could also back-up 50 hosts without problems. Preferably a solution that can offer bare metal restores for my Linux servers. I am not looking to reinstall the exact same version of Plesk, the software, etc...

• How to monitor the network traffic on a router?

  Here's my current network set-up: we have 3 users connecting to a Thomson Gateway router (TG585 v8) provided by my ISP. We are connecting over an ADSL line. The problem is that we have a limited data allowance (60GB) and we always exceed it. I would like to monitor how much traffic each computer makes. The best solution would be to install a software on the router (like OpenWRT) which would monitor how much traffic each computer makes. But I couldn't find any replacement firmware that would support my router. The other solution would be to install a software on each machine and then collect all the data at the end of the mount. But that's not a very good think to do. Plus, the users can always shut down the application. Any suggestions?

• How to associate all file types within Wine with its corresponding native application?

  This is easily done for a single file type, as answered in How to associate a file type within Wine with a native application?, by creating a .reg for the desired filetype. But this is for AVI only. I use some wine apps (uTorrent, Soulseek, Eudora, to name a few) that can launch a wide range of files. Email attachments, for example, can be JPG, DOC, PDF, PPS... its impossible (and not desirable) to track down all possible file types that one may receive in an email or download in a torrent. So I neeed a solution to be more generic and broad. I need the file association to honor whatever native app is currently configured. And I want this to be done for all file types configured in my system. I've already figured out how to make the solution generic. Simply replacing the launched app in .reg for winebrowser, like this: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pdf] @="PDFfile" "Content Type"="application/pdf" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PDFfile\Shell\Open\command] @="C:\\windows\\system32\\winebrowser.exe \"%1\"" Ive tested this and it works correctly. Since winebrowser uses xdg-open as a backend, and converts my windows path to a Unix one, the correct (Linux) app is launched. So I need a "batch" updater to wine's registry, sort of a wine-update-associations script that I can run whenever a new app is installed. Maybe a tool that can: List all Mime Types types in my system that have a default, installed app associated Extract all the needed info (glob, mime type, etc) Generate the .REG file in the above format The tricky part is: i've searched a LOT to find info about how association is done in Ubuntu 10.10 onwards, and documentation is scarce and confusing, to say the least. Freedesktop.org has no complete spec, and even Gnome docs are obsolete. So far I've gathered 4 files that contain association info, but im clueless on which (or why) to use, or how to use them to generate the .reg file: ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list ~/.local/share/applications/miminfo.cache /usr/share/applications/miminfo.cache /etc/gnome/defaults.list Any help, script or explanation would be greatly appreciated! • How to create an UEFI bootable USB stick from an ISO

  I have an ISO image of my backup solution's recovery cd. When I burn the image to a CD-ROM, I can boot from it in UEFI or normal mode without problems. Unfortunately, this is no solution for my laptop, as it does not have an optical drive. Thus, I tried to create a bootable USB stick that can also boot in UEFI mode, but so far I have not been successful (note that the laptop has UEFI and boots Windows 7 in UEFI mode). So my question is, if anyone knows how I can get said ISO on my USB stick so that it boots as if I would use a CD-ROM?

• Should I use an interface when methods are only similar?

  I was posed with the idea of creating an object that checks if a point will collide with a line: public class PointAndLineSegmentCollisionDetector { public void Collides(Point p, LineSegment s) { // ... } } This made me think that if I decided to create a Box object, then I would need a PointAndBoxCollisionDetector and a LineSegmentAndBoxCollisionDetector. I might even realize that I should have a BoxAndBoxCollisionDetector and a LineSegmentAndLineSegmentCollisionDetector. And, when I add new objects that can collide I would need to add even more of these. But, they all have a Collides method, so everything I learned about abstraction is telling me, "Make an interface." public interface CollisionDetector { public void Collides(Spatial s1, Spatial s2); } But now I have a function that only detects some abstract class or interface that is used by Point, LineSegment, Box, etc.. So if I did this then each implementation would have to to a type check to make sure that the types are the appropriate type because the collision algorithm is different for each different type match up. Another solution could be this: public class CollisionDetector { public void Collides(Point p, LineSegment s) { ... } public void Collides(LineSegment s, Box b) { ... } public void Collides(Point p, Box b) { ... } // ... } But, this could end up being a huge class that seems unwieldy, although it would have simplicity in that it is only a bunch of Collide methods. This is similar to C#'s Convert class. Which is nice because it is large, but it is simple to understand how it works. This seems to be the better solution, but I thought I should open it for discussion as a wiki to get other opinions.

• Google Apps For Business, SSO, AD FS 2.0 and AD

  We are a small company with 22 people in the office. We had a lot of problems with e-mail in the past so I decided to change over to Google Apps for Business. It is the perfect solution for us, except for one thing: I need to be able to control the access to the mailboxes. Only users inside the office, authenticated to AD, or users authenticated to our VPN can connect to gmail. From what I've read it is possible using the SSO (Single Sign On) solution provided by Google - but i am having some trouble finding consistent information about it. First of all, our infrastructure: Windows Server 2008 R2 Active Directory, one domain only. Kerio Control for QoS and VPN. That's about it on our side. On Google Apps' side, I have one account, and 03 domains that my users use to log in. The main domain has most of the users, but the are a couple of people that login using one of the subdomains. I have a 03 domains because I run mail for 03 companies and wanted all to be in within the same control panel. Well, I found some guides on the internet but none of them cover the AD FS installation part. I've read somewhere that I needed to download AD FS 2.0 directly from Microsoft.com, because the one that came with Windows Server was a old version. I downloaded it (adfsSetup.exe) and tried to install but got an error, saying that I needed a Windows Server 2008 Sp2 for that program. My Windows Server 2008 is R2. I really need some help here, this is very importand, I dont want to have to pay $1000 for a SSO solution when i have an AD set up. Can someone please point me out to the right direction? Where can I find an AD FS 2.0 setup compatible with R2 would be a good start, or the one that came with r2 is already the 2.0 version. After the initial setup, there are some guides on the internet about the Google Apps part. It seems to be really easy. I also tried adding AD FS role, but there are a bunch of options wich I have no idea what means, and I coudn't find any guide covering that on the internet. I dont have a lot of experience with Windows Server, but I have a company wich is certificated and provide us with support. I can ask for their help in the later setup, but I dont think ADFS is a very common thing to deal with.

• Automated Acceptance tests under specific contraints

  This is a follow up to my previous question, which was a bit general, so I'll be asking for a more precise situation. I want to automate acceptance testing on a web application. Briefly, this application allows the user to create contracts for subscribers with the two constraints: You cannot create more than one contract for a subscriber. Once a contract is created, it cannot be deleted (from the UI) Let's say TestCreate is a test case with tests for the normal creation of a contract. The constraints have introduced complexities to the testing process, mainly dependencies between test cases and test executions. Before we run TestCreate we need to make sure that the application is in a suitable state (the subscriber has no contract) If we run TestCreate twice, the second run will fail since the state of the application will have changed. So we need to revert back to the initial state (i.e. delete the contract), which is impossible to do from the UI. More generally, after each test case we should guarantee that the state is reverted back. And since, in this case, it is impossible to do it from the UI, how do you handle this? Possible solution: I thought about doing a backup of the database in the state that I desire, and after each test case, run a script which deletes the db and restores the backup. However, I find that to be too heavy to do for each single test case. In addition, what if some information are stored in files? or in multiple or unaccessible databases? My question: In this situation, what would an experienced tester do to write automated and maintanable tests. Thank you. More info: I'm trying to integrate tests into a BDD framework, which I find to be a neat solution for test documentation and communication, but it does not solve this particular problem (it even makes it harder)

  I freshly installed Kubuntu 13.10, 32 bit version on newly purchased Dell Vostro 2420. everything is working fine except scrolling and multitouch features through touchpad. I am able to change position of cursor using touchpad and able to tap (single click and double click) but scrolling is not working I tried to find out solution by searching on google but could not find proper solution to load synaptics drivers. i am listing some details: Laptop: Dell Vostro 2420 Linux Kernel version and distribution: 3.11.0-12-generic, Kubuntu 13.10 output of xinput list is ? • ubuntu qcow2 image for local usage

  I'm using kvm and I would like to run ubuntu server on it. My goal is to run db2 database instance for development. Is there ready to use ubuntu qcow2 images online for such purpose? Or should I install it from live cd? I've found this instruction UEC/Images, but at launch I get: $ kvm -fda ${floppy} -drive if=virtio,file=./disk.img -boot a ... Nothing to boot: No such file or directory (http://ipxe.org/...) No more network devices No bootable device. Solution: I havent found pre-installed ubuntu virtual machine image online, so solution is to install it by your self.

• Plug and Go NAS Storage

  My wife and I are separating. One of the things we need to extricate is the media we have accumulated over the years. So I am looking for a NAS solution that is a) relatively low-cost, b) reliable and c) easy for a non-geek to use (I don't want to be tech support). All it needs to do is hold our iTunes library, photos, course work and maybe some movies and TV shows that I currently have. She will be connecting via her Netbook. I have seen this thread but the reviews on Amazon aren't particularly favourable. Due to the need for simplicity, WHS and FreeNAS are none-starters. I need redundancy as if a single drive system was to die then she would lose her course work and photos. Is the ReadyNAS the only real solution out there?

• Overwhelmed by complex C#/ASP.NET project in Visual Studio 2008

  I have been hired as a junior programmer to work on projects that extend existing functionality in a very large, complex solution. The code base consists of C#, ASP.NET, jQuery, javascript, html and xml. I have some knowledge of all these in addition to fair knowledge of object-oriented programming and its fundamental concepts of inheritance, abstraction, polymorphism and encapsulation. I can follow code up through its base classes, interfaces, abstract classes and understand a large part of the code that I read while doing this. However, this solution is so humongous and so many things get tied together whenever I navigate through the code that I feel absolutely overwhelmed. I often find myself unable to fully follow everything that is going on with objects being serialized, large amounts of C# and javascript operating on the same pages and methods being called from template files that consist mainly of markup. I love learning about code, but trying to deal with this really stresses me out. Additionally, I do know that a significant amount of unit testing has been done but I know nothing about unit testing or how to utilize it. Any advice anyone could offer me regarding dealing with a large code base while using Visual Studio 2008 would be greatly appreciated. Are there tools that I can use to help get a handle on what is going on? Perhaps there are things even in Visual Studio that I am not aware of. How can I follow the code to low level functionality in order to get a better grasp of what is going on at a high level?

• IT Inventory Tracking

  What is a good tool to keep track of IT inventory? Systems that are installed and running, parts being ordered, that sort of thing. I'd love a central, web based system (preferably something we can customize) but my searching so far has resulted in a lot of dead open source projects that havn't been updated in a few years and poorly created commercial websites that don't do a very good job describing their product. The software doesn't have to be free or open source - a good commercial alternative is fine. It doesn't even need to be a web-based tool, that's just what I thought would be simplist to find and easiest to deploy. The number of assets that it will be tracking will be in the dozens, so it doesn't have to be a super high-end enterprise solution but it does need to do a better job than an excel sheet in a shared folder (which is our current "solution")

The simple solution is this: ssh remote1 some-script This works until the remote script doesn't want to connect to another remote machine (remote2) which requires interactive authentication, like tis one (remote2 is only reachable through remote1 in this case): ssh remote1 "ssh remote2 some-script" The solution for the problem is to use the -t option for ssh. ssh -t remote1 "ssh remote2 some-script" This works, but I get probems in case I use this (where some-script may execute further ssh commands): ssh -t remote1 some-script I found that some environment variables are not set which are set when I don't use the -t option. These envrionment variables are set in scripts from /etc/profile.d. I guess that these scripts are not run for some reason if using the -t option, but are run if I don't use it. What's the reason of this? Is there any way to work around it? I am using SUSE linux (version 10).

• Script/tool to import series of snapshots, each being a new edition, into GIT, populating source tree?

  I've developed code locally and taken a fairly regular snapshot whenever I reach a significant point in development, e.g. a working build. So I have a long-ish list of about 40 folders, each folder being a snapshot e.g. in ascending date YYYYMMDD order, e.g.:- 20100523 20100614 20100721 20100722 20100809 20100901 20101001 20101003 20101104 20101119 20101203 20101218 20110102 I'm looking for a script to import each of these snapshots into GIT. The end result being that the latest code is the same as the last snapshot, and other editions are accessible and are as numbered. Some other requirements: that the latest edition is not cumulative of the previous snapshots, i.e., files that appeared in older snapshots but which don't appear in later ones (e.g. due to refactoring etc.) should not appear in the latest edition of the code. meanwhile, there should be continuity between files that do persist between snapshots. I would like GIT to know that there are previous editions of these files and not treat them as brand new files within each edition. Some background about my aim: I need to formally revision control this work rather than keep local private snapshot copies. I plan to release this work as open source, so version controlling would be highly recommended I am evaluating some of the current popular version control systems (Subversion and GIT) BUT I definitely need a working solution in GIT as well as subversion. I'm not looking to be persuaded to use one particular tool, I need a solution for each tool I am considering. (I haved posted an answer separately for each tool so separate camps of folks who have expertise in GIT and Subversion will be able to give focused answers on one or the other). • Is it possible to restrict fileserver access to domain users using computers that are members of the domain?

  It seems domain isolation can be used to accomplish, but I'd like a solution that doesn't require IPsec, or more accurately, doesn't require IPsec on the fileserver. IPsec if done in software has a large CPU overhead and our NAS boxes don't support any kind of offload. The goal is to avoid authenticated users using non-managed machines to access network resources. Network Access Protection (NAP) and the various enforcement points looked promsiing but I couldn't find a bulletproof way to use them [which doesn't require IPsec on the fileserver]. I was thinking when a domain user accesses the NAS box it will first need a Kerberos ticket from AD, so if AD could somehow verify the computer that was requesting the ticket was in the domain I'd have a solution.
