• FTPS SSH Host Key after IP Address Change

  I have a Secure FTP (FTPS) server that my remote sites to upload files to daily via scripted routines that run. I have had issues in the past when upgrading hardware and deploying new servers causing the RSA Fingerprint to change for that server. Then all my remote sites can't connect until I have the old key removed (usually via ssh_keygen -r myserver.com). I now have to change the IP address for myserver.com and I wondered if there is anyway to proactively generate new host keys so that when the server address changes all my FTPS client remote sites don't break?

• Install Office 2003 professional over Office 2003 Basic?

  I have a problem with one of our PCs. I've inherited this PC and it's always had MS Office Basic on it. The time has come to install our Access application on it, so I'm trying to install Office Professional 2003. The problem I have is the installer says the license key is invalid. I can only assume this is down to the fact that the PC used to have Office Basic installed. I've deleted the registration keys for the OFFICE11 section of the registry, but am still getting the problem. Any suggestions as to how to kill any trace of the old install would be appreciated - it's no longer showing up in the add/remove programs window.

• Cisco SG 300-28P PoE switch appears to have damaged my domain server's network IF

  I just replaced the old HP ProCurve switch with a new Cisco SG 300-28P managed switch. It has PoE on all ports. Everything works, except for my domain server that went offline and the network interface appears to be dead. Windows says the network cable is disconnected, and no lights blink on the switch. Tried different cables and different ports on the switch. The Cisco PoE ports are supposed to be auto-sensing, i.e. not to send power to a device that cannot handle it. Is this technique not 100% reliable? The server is a SHUTTLE XS35V2 with an onboard network chip, so it is probably fried. My questions: is this plausible? who's fault is it - Shuttle or Cisco (i.e. which support line should I try first)? UPDATE: I did go back and tried another switch between the server and the Cisco switch, and indeed, the connection came back to live. When everything is powered down and I start fresh, with the server connected to the Cisco switch, the port light will blink for a while and the connection status is "No Internet connection" at first until it goes off after about 20 seconds and the connection status changes to "Network cable disconnected". On the other switch it works. Clearly not a PoE issue now. I will start looking into the Cisco's onboard diagnostic functions, but so far I have not noticed anything unusual in the log.

• Smart card / auditable access for rack KVM tray

  Is there such a thing as a KVM Tray for a standard 19" rack whose use can be validated by a smartcard (or some other auditable authentication method)? It looks like we have a security requirement where just because users have a key to the rack doesn't mean they will be allowed to use the console inside the rack, and rather than just lock the console (and keep track of who has keys), we would prefer to be able to audit the actual user that was attached at the KVM. (It's worth mentioning that I'm aware of the Raritan devices, but they surely can't be the only ones) (If these things existed, I don't think half of the tratoirs that somehow manage to infiltrate CTU on the TV show 24 would ever get away with anything)

• EEE PC Keyboard malfunctioning - Ctrl key "sticks" after 10 seconds

  I was given a EEE PC belonging to a friend of a friend to fix. The keyboard did not appear to work at all. I spent a while testing out various things, blowing the keyboard out, checking for damage, and so on. Nothing appeared to be physically wrong. At first I noticed that the keyboard appeared to work just fine for 10 seconds (on average, sometimes more sometimes less) after being powered on. It had been restored to the factory default xandros installation with no user set up, so I couldn't get in to mess with things since I couldn't type to make a user. I made an ubuntu live USB to boot it from, and managed to get the boot order changed to boot from USB in the ~10 seconds of working keyboard I had (I don't think I've ever had to rush around BIOS menus that quickly). After I got Ubuntu up on it, I played around a bit more and determined that apparently the ctrl key is stuck down (not literally, but it's on all the time). If I open gedit, pressing the "o" key brings the open dialog, "s" opens the save dialog, and all other behaviour you would expect to see if you were holding down the control key. The only exception that I noticed is the "9" and "0" keys. They function normally. Figuring that out I made a xandros user with a name/password consisting of 9's and 0's. I couldn't find any options in Xandros that could potentially be helpful. I'm not familiar with EEE PCs. Is it safe to assume that the keyboard is simply dead or could there be another problem? I don't want to purchase another keyboard for him if that isn't going to fix the problem. The netbook doesn't show any obvious signs of damage but the owner is a biker and very often has it with him on the road so it's been subjected to a good bit of vibration.

• Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Drivers Missing Would Not Install?

  I am building my dev machine with WS2008R2SP1. I consider Windows Server as the best development environment for C# since I tend to focus on server-centric (integration) applications. The desktop flavor of Windows (7) doesn't play nicely with things like Commerce Server or BizTalk... so I to like stick to the environment I develop for. Previously I used to develop inside of VM's but I've found that it is super inefficient and tends to take a toll on the laptops. (I've gone through two of them in 6 months). Problem is that I multiple devices that do not want to be recognized by Windows: My machine is Dell Precision M4500: Intel Core i7-Q740, 1TB HDD, 8GB RAM, Dell re-branded Broadcom DW1501 802x11n Half-Mini Card, Dell re-branded Broadcom DW375 Bluetooh Module, Intel 82577LM Gigabit Network connection NVidia Quadro FX1800 Graphics The devices in question are the Dell rebranded broadcom network and bluetooth adapters: Broadcom USH: USB\VID_0A5C&PID_5800&REV_0101&MI_00 USB\VID_0A5C&PID_5800&MI_00 DW375 Bluetooth Module USB\VID_413C&PID_8187&REV_0517 USB\VID_413C&PID_8187 When I ran the broadcom installers I get "Operating System not supported" which I think is a big oversight on Broadcom's part. Why check for system version string? UGHGHGH Moreover if I try to manually force the driver in windows... I get an error: Driver Management concluded the process to install driver FileRepository\btwampsecfl.inf_amd64_neutral_d8fc2b85d035ed47\btwampsecfl.inf for Device Instance ID USB\VID_0A5C&PID_5800&MI_00\7&66DE6C9&0&0000 with the following status: 0xe0000217. '- or - Driver Management concluded the process to install driver FileRepository\btwampfl.inf_amd64_neutral_d4c4acf036c61299\btwampfl.inf for Device Instance ID USB\VID_413C&PID_8187\90004EEEF5A6 with the following status: 0xe0000217. I googled the 0xe0000217 error code and it says Bad service install section in the driver inf file... Any ideas on how to fix this? I also tried the post by BetaIQ on MSDN Forum, unfortunately the links to the driver package included in the post were dead :( PS. On a side note I also do mobile development for Android, iOS, and Windows Phone, and BB. Having the bluetooth is quite useful with mobile devices.

  I know that you can use SysPrep and ImageX to create a prepared image that can be used on several systems but the question is. How well does it work in a corporate environment of moving machines from old hardware off to new harddrives and new hardware? EDIT: The system runs accounting software and databases. So would SysPrep remove all License keys and other information which means would cause problems right? Would something else be a better option even though there are heavy costs involved? Currently, when I clone/copy the drive, Windows will black screen on me. So I need something with differential hardware support?

• Best practice for authenticating DMZ against AD in LAN

  We have few customer facing servers in DMZ that also have user accounts , all accounts are in shadow password file. I am trying to consolidate user logons and thinking about letting LAN users to authenticate against Active Directory.Services needing authentication are Apache, Proftpd and ssh. After consulting security team I have setup authentication DMZ that has LDAPS proxy that in turn contacts another LDAPS proxy (proxy2) in LAN and this one passes authentication info via LDAP (as LDAP bind) to AD controller.Second LDAP proxy only needed because AD server refuses speak TLS with our secure LDAP implemetation. This works for Apache using appropriate module.At a later stage I may try to move customer accounts from servers to LDAP proxy so they are not scattered around servers. For SSH I joined proxy2 to Windows domain so users can logon using their windows credentials.Then I created ssh keys and copied them to DMZ servers using ssh-copy, to enable passwordless logon once users are authenticated. Is this a good way to implement this kind of SSO?Did I miss any security issues here or maybe there is a better way ofachieving my goal?

• Windows virtual wifi hostednetwork - set max number of clients?

  I'm building an app that has functionality that creates on the fly a new virtual wifi utilizing the Windows 7 / 2008 features. I can create it just fine, but am looking how to limit the maximum number of connections. By running a "netsh wlan show hostednetwork" command to view my settings - it shows (by default 100), but it HAS to be somewhere in the registry right? - I can't see any settings available for this either at the command line or using the api - so I have to assume it's stored in the reg. I see vwifi and hostednetwork registry keys in HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\ - Wlansvc\parameters\hostednetworksettings, etc... but can't find any reference to add a "MaxClients" value (or similar) - would like to limit it to only one connection. Has anyone seen any references to this, or know how to do it?

• Remote Desktop Client Crashes following domain join

  I recently joined my laptop to our windows domain and now the remote desktop client crashes when i try and connect to any machine. It works if I run as administrator but not ordinarily. The domain join migrated my local profile to the domain profile which i think is where the problem lies. I'm guessing its a permission thing as I had a similar problem with dropbox and had to delete reg keys and reinstall. I can't figure out how to fix this problem though. • Recover OffScreen Window in Windows 8

  Someone asked a very similar question in regards to window recovery for windows xp: Similar Recovery I'm using windows 8 (or 8.1 now). I run Dual Monitors. On Monitor 2 I sometimes have the input switched to something else other than the windows display (Mac or PS3). If there was a program that was displaying on Window #2 that does not have 'move' where I could potentially alt-space-m arrow keys. Is there another way to get that program to display on Window #1? I tried right click on the program and doesn't seem to be anything there. I tried Windows Key and Arrows. I Tried right click toolbar and cascade. I'm hoping this is a DUP or Softball question because this annoys the crap out of me. Thanks!!

• Settings on php.ini ignored

  I can't get my server to obey the settings from php.ini (I'm trying to change memory_limit and upload_max_filesize). As far as I can tell, I'm editing the correct file. phpinfo() gives: Loaded Configuration File /etc/php.ini The file permission is 644. There are also some extra .ini files on /etc/php.d, but none include any of the keys I'm trying to change. No matter what I do, phpinfo reports the default values on both "Local" and "Master" columns. I also scanned my Apache config files, but found nothing related to PHP (besides loading the PHP module). The only way I was able to change those settings was by adding some php_value lines to my .htaccess. Is there something obvious I'm missing? This is a virtual server, and I can perform root commands with sudo. I'm running Apache 2.1.3 and PHP 5.3.3. System info (from uname -a) is: Linux sesctbapp01 2.6.18-308.1.1.el5 #1 SMP Wed Mar 7 04:16:51 EST 2012 x86_64

• Skype keypad tones

  Hi, When I push a number on the Skype keypad (or use the number keys on the keyboard) no tone is emitted. This happens both when dialling a number and if I push a key during a call. This makes it impossible for me to use Skype with automated telephone systems that require you to use the keypad to enter data or choose between various options. I spoke to somebody who works in a call centre about this and they indicated that somebody had mentioned that it's possible to disable (DTMF) tones in Skype. I've looked through all the Skype options and can't find any way to enable/disable DTMF tones. If somebody knows how I can do this, or has another suggestion for fixing the problem, please let me know. I'm using version 4.2.0.152 of Skype. Thanks, Don

• laptop motherboard "shorts" when connected to adapter

  Disclaimer: I'm sort of a noob, and this is a long post. Thank you all in advance! summary: completely dead laptop with no signs of life whatsoever (suddenly, for no apparent reason) Here's the deal: Lenovo Y470 (only a few months old with no water or shock damage). It stopped working suddenly (no lights, no sound, even when connecting adapter with or without battery). I tried a different adapter (same electrical rating), but no luck. I disassembled the thing completely, and tried plugging in the adapter and looking for signs of life with all different combinations of components installed (tried all combinations of RAM, CPU, USB power cords, screen, etc plugged in). no luck. Then, I noticed (as I was plugging in the adapter to try for the millionth time) that there was a "spark" for an instant when I first connect the adapter to the power jack. The adapter's LED would then flash (indicating it isn't working or charging). So, I thought the power jack has a short of some sort (due to bad soldering or something). Scanned virtually every single component on the motherboard, and tested the power jack connections with a multimeter. No shorts or damage to anything on the entire motherboard. Now I'm thinking I need to replace the motherboard. But, my actual question: What does this "shorting" when connecting the adapter signify? (btw, the voltage across the power connections and current through it drop to virtually zero when the adapter is connected and "sparks", and they stay that way). The bewildering thing is that there are no damaged components, and the voltage across adapter terminals returns to normal after I disconnect it (so it's not damaged). Please take a look at the pictures (of the motherboard's power connection and nearby components) and see if I'm missing something completely obvious... • Making evince the default application for embedding PDFs in firefox in ubuntu

  While I'm on the subject of complaining about things that upgrading to ubuntu 10.04 broke (see here), another problem that happened on moving from 9.04 to 9.10 (I think) is this: Firefox used to open embedded pdf files with evince and that was fine. Now it opens them with okular, which I don't like for several reasons. (Pg Up, Pg Dn keys don't work. I don't like the KDE save file dialogue box, because I'm used to gnome. ) So my question is: how do I change which program is used to embed PDFs in firefox in ubuntu?

• o2cb thinks ocfs2 cluster is still online, and refuses to shut down

  I have a handful of OpenSuSE 11.2 servers that utilize OCFS2 volumes. I've noticed that o2cb can't figure out when the OCFS2 cluster is actually mounted. For example, when I try to shutdown o2cb, after stopping OCSF2, o2cb refuses to shutdown because it thinks OCFS2 is still up! • Computer does not switch on after power outage

  VOLTAGE DROP OFF FOR PC does not restart The other day my pc was turned off due to power outage. Since that time the computer would not turn on again, no sign of life, it seems dead. I did several tests, changed the power outlet and disconnect the wires ... also I have reseated the cards ... but the result is that nothing changes. What can I do? Could there may be damage to the hardware due to the power outage? Note: the voltage drop is not due to a lightning storm and so is not due to damaged components (burnt card etc ...) • How to enable connection security for WMI firewall rules when using VAMT 2.0?

  I want to use VAMT 2.0 to install product keys and active software in remote machines. Everything works fine as long as the ASync-In, DCOM-In, and WMI-In Windows Firewall rules are enabled and the action is set to Allow the connection. However, when I try using Allow the connection if it is secure (regardless of the connection security option chosen) VAMT won't connect to the remote machine. I tried using wbemtest and the error always is “The RPC server is unavailable”, error code 0x800706ba. How do I setup at least some level of connection security for remote WMI access for VAMT to work? I googled for correct VAMT setup, read the Volume Activation 2.0 Step-by-Step guide, but no luck finding anything about connection security.

• Removing an OTF macro from a Razer Deathstalker

  I recently bought a Razer Deathstalker, and the other day I managed to activate the OTF macro recorder by accident, so now I have random gibberish and key presses bound to regular keys, so typing anything ends up being a pain, considering the backspace key prints "allallallallall", and so on. The only way I've found of fixing this is reconnecting the keyboard or disabling Synapse, but that's only temporary, as it comes right back the next time I turn my PC on. Razer support mentions nothing related to removing them, and neither anywhere else I could imagine, and nothing shows up in Synapse (god I hate Synapse). But anyways, I'd appreciate it if anyone could help. Thanks

• Adding entries to the context menu and organising them in Windows 7

  So I've got the hang of adding keys to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\Shell, and I know I can add a string entitled 'Position' and change its value to position the entry I've made, but I can't figure out how to do three things (nor can I find anything guiding me in doing them): 1) How to put a bar on either side of an entry to separate it from other entries 2) How to position them in an exact place in the context menu (eg. above or below a certain other entry) 3) How to make an entry that brings up another list of entries (like the 'View' and 'Sort by' entries that are already there when you right-click in Windows Explorer I wasn't sure whether this goes in StackOverflow or SuperUser, but I thought maybe it goes here since I'm using Regedit rather than coding it (though I am aware you can right a .reg file and then execute it to install these sorts of things).
