• How to say effectively to a manager that you missed the 'deadline' [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: I cannot reach my deadline. What to do? My manager is a very deadline specific person. Even though I am a trainee, he insists on a deadline for every small assignment that he gives. Now it so happens that I miss the deadline. And boy, he doesn’t like that at all! So how do I say that i missed the deadline without inviting his wrath? How to stop getting into his bad books? P.S. I am not being lazy. Just that the assignments that he gives are not easy stuff, plus I am doing it in Delphi, which is new to me.

  The rule of 3 (the rule of 5 in the new c++ standard) states : If you need to explicitly declare either the destructor, copy constructor or copy assignment operator yourself, you probably need to explicitly declare all three of them. But, on the other hand, the Martin's "Clean Code" advises to remove all empty constructors and destructors (page 293, G12:Clutter) : Of what use is a default constructor with no implementation? All it serves to do is clutter up the code with meaningless artifacts. So, how to handle these two opposite opinions? Should empty constructors/destructors really be implemented?

• Writing a basic C Shell - understanding argv[] [on hold]

  I have an assignment for my class to write a basic C Shell. I have found many pages that explain parts of it and some fully implemented code. I'm not going to copy, i'm just using it right now as a way to get started. So I'm at the beginning of this project obviously. One example I am looking at parses the user's input and stores a pointer to the beginning of the argument in char *argv[3]; Am I just misunderstanding this or would this technically break if there are more than 3 arguments? (say /a.out arg1 arg2 arg3 etc). Would I wanna malloc this somehow? I know a.out is considered argv[0], and the arguments argv1 - however many there are. It's probably bad practice to have too many arguments for a program, but I still would at least want to address it as I don't know what my TA's are going to use to test my shell.

• Great job offer..but I have uneasy feeling [closed]

  I just got an offer for a great opportunity, location, salary...but something seams odd. During my interview, for the position of software engineer, it was very relaxed and casual. Which was very nice. But I got the odd sense that I already had the job and that this was just a "getting to know you" conversation. Then, when they never did any code testing or assignment to demonstrate my skills I thought that really odd. It's like I got hired straight from my resume. I'm uncomfortable with this because I'd rather know now, that I don't meet their needs, rather than after 3 months. (Which is when benefits kick in and they say they'll convert me from temp. employee) This sounds like temp-to-hire or contract-to-hire.

• How to resolve ambiguous key sequence?

  Using BasKet, I get the following message: Ambiguous Shortcut Detected The key sequence 'Ctrl+1' is ambiguous. Use 'Configure Shortcuts' from the 'Settings' menu to solve the ambiguity. No action will be triggered. 'Ctrl+1' is shown next to 'To-Do' under the 'Tags' menu. If I look in 'Configure Shortcuts' I don't find Ctrl+1 assigned to anything (the tag shortcuts aren't listed at all, leading me to believe their assignment is hard coded). I looked under 'System Preferences Keyboard Shortcuts' and also searched through CompizConfig, but didn't find anything there that might conflict. How do I resolve this keyboard shortcut issue? I'm guessing the particular program or key sequence isn't too important. It looks like it happens with a number of KDE programs (sadly I haven't seen a solution).

  I have used the web and Stack Overflow extensively during the past month or so in creating my final project for my C# class. I have used so much code that I didn't write myself that I feel I am being unethical by not giving proper credit to the people who helped me; or the websites that have provided excellent examples. Is it unethical to publish work which was created by me, even though its hardest problems were solved by other people? Should I credit these people for helping me with my assignment? Or the web sites which provided examples?

The logic I would use for the program is. Get input a. Store a % 2 as b. If b is 0, then b is even, else b is odd. The catch though, is that we have to write the program without the use of a if-else statement. • Why does IDLE continue to crash? [migrated]

  Idle keeps crashing and I can't figure it out. After restarting the computer and reinstalling Python, none of which seemed to work, I looked to my peers and was told to "install one of the Tcl/Tk". After getting another opinion I was also told that I already had this and found it to be true but decided to try it anyway since it continued to crash. Nothing has improved and I have an assignment due. Any ideas on why this continues to happen and what I can do to fix the crash?   Im creating a multiplayer asteroids type game for the Windows Phone 7, 2 players can challenge each other over who will get the highest score. On each players phone the opponent is displayed and both go about shooting asteroids and enemies. In an assignment I have due I would like to talk about the packet design, what would be the least amount of info that I can send over the connection? Instead of constantly having to send each players position, asteroid position, bullet position and enemy position etc. Or would all that data constantly need to be sent?

• Should I pay my developers for bugs fixes for a project or work that's still in progress?

  We are working with a group of developers on a project. The project is still in progress (not completed) and these developers charge us for time spent on fixing bugs on codes that were not written valid in the first place. I understand that we should pay for changes/new requests if any, but not bugs fixes for a work in progress. We also understand that once the assignment is being deployed to the live site, we may be liable for bugs fixes that may arise after a support period is being exhausted. The question now is, is it appropriate for such charges to be levied upon us while the project is still in progress?

• how do I upload photos from shotwell?

  I only started using Ubuntu a couple months ago. I've been able to get pictures from my camera onto the machine. The system is very different for me and I'm trying to work it out on my own, but I have a homework assignment that requires me to upload JPG files of photos I take and I'm having a problem. When I click the button on the page to choose a file, I go into the different photo files and nothing shows up, but the screen where files would be turns a very faint orange, just a tint. I've tried putting the named photos on my desktop, but the upload screen doesn't recognize it at all. How can I use this software to upload my pictures? Thanks.

• Force10 S4810 "Overlapping route for management interface"

  We just got in a pair of Force10 S4810s and are getting tripped up on what should be a very basic configuration step. The S4810 has a gigabit copper management port (though ultimately we'd like to not use that and just trunk in a management vlan). We followed the configuration commands verbatim from a rapid config guide and keep getting a weird error. • Broadcom NIC Teaming w/ 802.3ad and Dell Powerconnect 2824

  We have a Poweredge R210 running WS2K8R2. The server has two Broadcom 5716C NICs running Broadcom BASP. I can team the NICs using the 802.3ad protocol on the server end no problem. I have no VLAN. Now I go to the 2824 switch (default settings all round) running in managed mode and create a LAG with ports g1 and g2. As soon as I add these ports, I lose the ability to send traffic to or from the server. I am much more of a server guy than a networking guy, what am I doing wrong here? Server Static IP Address: 10.10.61.15 Network mask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 10.10.61.51 The 2824 switch has an IP address of 10.10.61.51 and in turn has its gateway as our firewall server running ISA Server at 10.10.61.50.

  Have a Lenovo laptop which i'm trying to capture an image from as a test (we are moving from HP as our std laptop) and i keep getting the PXE E52 error when trying to boot from LAN. With things exactly as they are all the previous HP models are connecting ok. I'm at a loss as to what to test, as its working for the HP kit and don't want to break that. Note: DHCP server and WDS server are two separate boxes but on same scope, VLAN, etc. and the DHCP lease is not full.

• Troubleshooting PXE-E11: ARP Timeout error under VMware ESXi 4 and HPSA 7.8

  I am running HP Server Automation v7.8 in a lab environment on VMware ESXi, managed via vSphere 4. On the same host I have several small VMs for OS provisioning testing (512MB RAM, 10GB hdd, one NIC on the same vSwitch that HPSA is running on). DHCP is configured to hand-out addresses in the 192.168.10.151-200 range. On boot of the VM, it receives an IP (eg 192.168.10.198) within seconds. However, after it receives its IP, a PXE-E11: ARP Timeout error occurs in trying to boot from the DHCP server. I do not know if this is a HPSA-specific error, as I have seen reports of the PXE-E11 error on various forums. Proposed solutions I have seen so far (changing VLAN settings, for example) have not been applicable to my environment. Are there any pointers/troubleshooting steps that can be taken to resolve this?

• How can we configure the Bitnami Joomla stack to open a socket on startup?

  I have deployed the Bitnami Ubuntu Joomla! 3.1.5-2 (64-bit) stack on Amazon Cloud: http://bitnami.com/stack/joomla/cloud/amazon By default, the stack is configured to run PHP using PHP-FPM. I have no problem getting the Joomla and phpmyadmin running as virtual hosts on Apache. But now, I would like to add another virtual host. • Recovering a VHD after resizing it using VBoxManage

  I am using VirtualBox 4.1.18 and had a virtual machine running Windows 8 RC with a single VHD, which was initially sized at 25GB (too small!). • Uninstall php5 installed from source.

  I have tried to install php5 from source , and it worked... Then for some reason need to install the official packets, so i tried a make uninstall and for my surprise there is such make uninstall... so i tried delete all the installed files by hand. • Trying to install ffmpeg-php and having installation issues.

  I've installed ffmpeg successfully using the ffmpeginstaller 3 series (http://www.ffmpeginstaller.com/download). ffmpeg is working fine without any known issues with bash. The ffmpeginstaller is meant to install ffmpeg-php but it cannot be found and I receive an error when I execute php -v PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/lib64/php/modules/ffmpeg.so' - /usr/lib64/php/modules/ffmpeg.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory in Unknown on line 0 Looking at the '/usr/lib64/php/modules/' folder, it doesn't contain the ffmpeg.so file. I've tried to install ffmpeg-php manually but I receive the following error checking for ffmpeg headers... configure: error: ffmpeg headers not found. Make sure you've built ffmpeg as shared libs using the --enable-shared option Should I install ffmpeg with series 4 or 5 of ffmpeginstaller or does someone know how to fix this issue? • Using the Juniper EX3300 Switch as a router?

  I have a Juniper EX3300 switch in a data center. And I have connected one of the uplink ports (ge-0/1/0) to my ISP's router. I want to configure it so that all the devices connected to ports in the same VLAN as ge-0/1/0 can access the Internet. I have done some research, and I haven't gotten anywhere really. I have configured the interface as follows: ge-0/1/0 { ether-options { no-auto-negotiation; link-mode full-duplex; speed { 1g; } } unit 0 { family inet { address xx.xx.xx.xx/32; } } } where xx.xx.xx.xx is the "Customer Router Port IP" assigned by my ISP. When I try to commit, I get the following error: Interface ge-0/1/0.0 not enabled for switching Can some one tell me what is the right way to configure it?
