• What IDE setup and workflow is used for OSGi development?

  I made quite a few easy OSGi test projects in Eclipse RCP. My typical workflow would always be: Make 3 different projects: APIproject, Clientproject and Serverproject Edit the MANIFEST.MF of APIproject to export the api package Edit the MANIFEST.MF file of Clientproject and Serverproject to add the required API package Choose "Run as..." "Plugin Framework" OSGi console starts in eclipse and everything seems to work I also tried wiring things by using Declarative Services, which worked well like this too. Now recently I wanted to try out iPOJO. The problem is that I get the feeling that I've been doing my OSGi development the wrong way. Can it be that I should instead make 1 project en make it work like no OSGi is involved. And then afterwards, just export each package to its own bundle by means of (for instance) the BNDL tool? Should development be done in a normal Eclipse (java, not RCP) or any other java IDE for that matter? So that's why I have these questions: What IDE setup is normally used to develop OSGi with iPOJO? And what is the normal workflow to be used when developing OSGi projects (maybe with iPOJO)?

• Hotkeys in webapps

  When creating webapps, is there any guidelines on which keys you can use for your own hotkeys without overriding too many of the browsers default hotkeys. For example i might want to have a custom copy command for copying entire sets of data that only makes sense for my program instead of just text. The logical combination for this would be ctrl+c but that would destroy the default copy hotkey for normal text. One solution i was thinking about is to only catch the hotkey when it "makes sense" but when you use some advanced custom selection it might be hard to differentiate if your data is focused, if text is selected or both. Right now i am only using single keys as the hotkey, so just 'c' for the example above and this seems to be what most other sites are doing too. The problem is that if you have text input this doesn't work so good. Is this the best solution? To clarify I'm talking about advanced webapps that behave more like normal programs and not just some website presenting information(even though i think these guidlines would be valid for both cases). So for the copy example it might not be a big deal if you can't copy the text in the menu but when ctrl+tab, alt+d or ctrl+e doesn't work i would be really pissed, cough flash cough.

  I am aware that passing vdso=0 to kernel can turn this feature off, and that the dynamic linker in glibc can automatic detect and use vdso feature from kernel. Here I met with this problem. There is a RHEL 5.6 box (kernel 2.6.18-238.el5) in my institution where I only have a normal user access, probably suffering from RHEL bug 673616. I cannot simply upgrade the box to a newer RHEL version, nor could I turn VDSO off via sysctl or proc. The question is, is there a way to compile glibc so that it turns off VDSO unconditionally?

• How to generate random numbers of lognormal distribution within specific range in Matlab

  My grain sizes are defined as D=[1.19,1.00,0.84,0.71,0.59,0.50,0.42]. The problem is described below in steps. Grain sizes should follow lognormal distribution. The mean of the grain sizes is fixed as 0.84 and the standard deviation should be as low as possible but not zero. 90% of the grains (by weight %) fall in the size range of 1.19 to 0.59, and the rest 10% fall in size range of 0.50 to 0.42. Now I want to find the probabilities (weight percentage) of the grains falling in each grain size. It is allowable to split this grain size distribution into further small sizes but it must always be in the range of 1.19 and 0.42, i.e. 'D' can be continuous but 0.42 < D < 1.19. I need it fast. I tried on my own but I am not able to get the correct result. I am getting negative probabilities (weight percentages). Thanks to anyone who helps. I didn't incorporate the point 3 as I came to know about that condition later.   Most functions for generating lognormally distributed random numbers take the mean and standard deviation of the associated normal distribution as parameters. My problem is that I only know the mean and the coefficient of variation of the lognormal distribution. It is reasonably straight forward to derive the parameters I need for the standard functions from what I have: If mu and sigma are the mean and standard deviation of the associated normal distribution, we know that coeffOfVar^2 = variance / mean^2 = (exp(sigma^2) - 1) * exp(2*mu + sigma^2) / exp(mu + sigma^2/2)^2 = exp(sigma^2) - 1 We can rearrange this to sigma = sqrt(log(coeffOfVar^2 + 1)) We also know that mean = exp(mu + sigma^2/2) This rearranges to mu = log(mean) - sigma^2/2 Here's my R implementation rlnorm0 <- function(mean, coeffOfVar, n = 1e6) { sigma <- sqrt(log(coeffOfVar^2 + 1)) mu <- log(mean) - sigma^2 / 2 rlnorm(n, mu, sigma) } It works okay for small coefficients of variation r1 <- rlnorm0(2, 0.5) mean(r1) # 2.000095 sd(r1) / mean(r1) # 0.4998437 But not for larger values r2 <- rlnorm0(2, 50) mean(r2) # 2.048509 sd(r2) / mean(r2) # 68.55871 To check that it wasn't an R-specific issue, I reimplemented it in MATLAB.   Following up on my last year's question on documentation, I now want to get started and try out Python-based Sphinx for putting together the developer documentation for a PHP CMS I've been working on. Instead of setting up Python locally on my workstation, I would like to run it on a publicly accessible web server from the start. All the web hosting packages I have access to run on the LAMP stack, and I'm reluctant to buy Python-based hosting. I am very interested in the Google App Engine, the free quotas they provide will do for me a hundred times over, and even if not, their pricing looks very reasonable. Now I have zero knowledge of Python - getting Sphinx to work would be my first contact with it - and very little time. As far as I understand, the platform and python libraries the App Engine provides are very compatible to a standard Python library but not identical. So my question is: Can Sphinx run on App Engine at all? Is installing Sphinx on the App Engine as straightforward as if I would install it on top of a normal Python installation? Or will the App Engine's environment require tweaking of the source code that I can't perform in reasonable time with my current level of Python? Should I be installing Sphinx on a local server and a "normal" Python stack instead first? Does anybody know any helpful How-to's, tutorials or other resources for this?

• Curve fitting: Find a CDF (or any function) that satisfies a list of constraints.

  I have some constraints on a CDF in the form of a list of x-values and for each x-value, a pair of y-values that the CDF must lie between. We can represent that as a list of {x,y1,y2} triples such as constraints = {{0, 0, 0}, {1, 0.00311936, 0.00416369}, {2, 0.0847077, 0.109064}, {3, 0.272142, 0.354692}, {4, 0.53198, 0.646113}, {5, 0.623413, 0.743102}, {6, 0.744714, 0.905966}} Graphically that looks like this: And since this is a CDF there's an additional implicit constraint of {Infinity, 1, 1} Ie, the function must never exceed 1. Also, it must be monotone. Now, without making any assumptions about its functional form, we want to find a curve that respects those constraints. For example: (I cheated to get that one: I actually started with a nice log-normal distribution and then generated fake constraints based on it.) • What's the difference between an option type and a nullable type?

  In F# mantra there seems to be a visceral avoidance of null, Nullable<T> and its ilk. In exchange, we are supposed to instead use option types. To be honest, I don't really see the difference. My understanding of the F# option type is that it allows you to specify a type which can contain any of its normal values, or None. For example, an Option<int> allows all of the values that an int can have, in addition to None. My understanding of the C# nullable types is that it allows you to specify a type which can contain any of its normal values, or null. For example, a Nullable<int> a.k.a int? allows all of the values that an int can have, in addition to null. What's the difference? Do some vocabulary replacement with Nullable and Option, null and None, and you basically have the same thing. What's all the fuss over null about?

• Add delay and focus for a dead simple accordion jquery

  I found the code somewhere in the world, and due to its dead simple nature, I found some things in need to fix, like when hovering the trigger, the content is jumping up down before it settled. I have tried to change the trigger from the title of the accordion block to the whole accordion block to no use. I need help to add a delay and only do the accordion when the cursor is focus in the block. I have corrected my css to make sure the block is covering the hidden part as well when toggled. The thing is that i want to check if an item is already cloned. If it is i want to stop it from being cloned again. • movie does not start in full screen in flash video player

  We have this legacy code of a flash video player that functions well enough but still has some loose ends I need to tighten up. It can do the basic "switch to full screen and back to normal size" stunts, however with one exception. On the first fresh load of the app, if I switch to full screen mode first, and then click to play the movie, the player would be in full screen, yet the movie itself would remain in it's original size. //trigger if (stage.displayState == StageDisplayState.NORMAL) { stage.addEventListener('fullScreen', procFullScreen); stage.scaleMode = StageScaleMode.NO_SCALE; stage.displayState = StageDisplayState.FULL_SCREEN; //mv:VideoDisplay mv.percentHeight = 100; mv.percentWidth = 100; mv.x = 0; mv.y = 0; } // event handler if (event.fullScreen) { mv.smoothing = true; this.height = stage.height; this.width = stage.width; //videoCanvas:Canvas videoCanvas.height = Application.application.height; videoCanvas.width = Application.application.width; fullScreenViewStack.selectedIndex = 1; } The VideoDisplay object even returns the expected width/height, but the movie just plays in it's original size. If I switch screen sizes during movie playback, then the movie size will shrink or stretch as it should. I'm running out of ideas, any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

• Really strange problem with jailbroken iPhone 4. Lags but fixes by running Cydia a second

  I have jailbreaked my iPhone 4 iOS 4.1 with both limera1n and greenpois0n and the outcome is the same. My phone is really slow opening apps. (including Phone.app an SMS.app) they take about 10-15seconds to load. BUT if I start Cydia for only one second everything goes back to normal. (Please note that I have to have 3G or WI-FI access to do this) Until I let my phone sit for about 15 minutes then it's the same again. Please note that if I don't exit the apps they seem to continue working but with a bit of lag. Cydia also seems to be the only app not affected by the delay. "Loding Data" appears as quick as normal. These issues did not start to appear until about 2 weeks after I jailbreaked my phone. I have tried running "speed test" while it's in its slow state. I start the app and the app loads for like 15 seconds and then the result shows everyhting is good. All green. Since Cydia seems for fix it temporarily i figured it's jailbreak-related and not hardware-related.

• DotNetNuke and Subversion guidelines

  I've Googled, Binged, and here at StackOverflow, looked through the related questions and searched, but I'm not finding what I'm looking for. I've also searched documentation on DNN. What I'm looking for is any guidance (tutorials, blogs, step-by-step instructions for setting up a repository) etc from people who are experienced in using DotNetNuke with SVN. We use SVN for all our source control, and have no problem with standard applications, because we pretty much built the repository and directory structure to work with our processes. This means when we do web sites, in Visual Studio, we do file based web sites, rather than setting them up in the local IIS. It just makes things easier for us. However, with DNN, it appears that even if you get the source code, it is expecting to be set up in the local IIS, which means additional headaches for us. For example, we are moving all of our source code off our local C drives, and onto a shared drive on a server. This is to enable backups in addition to our normal source control. (This was a management decision). So that means that we need to change the virtual web app when we make the move. Has anyone come up with a good way to work around this? Can DNN be set up so that the developer web server in Visual Studio can be used, so that we can treat it just like any normal web app? Am I missing something obvious? Edit - added I'm willing to accept answers like "We tried it and never got it to work", and "It can't be done" as answers. I'm always open to hearing "It can't be done the way you want. You need to change your procedures to match how it works" if necessary. I guess if you've got experience trying this and just couldn't get it to work, I can learn from your experience that way as well, but some detail would be good.

• Why does Microsoft advise against readonly fields with mutable values?

  In the Design Guidelines for Developing Class Libraries, Microsoft say: Do not assign instances of mutable types to read-only fields. The objects created using a mutable type can be modified after they are created. For example, arrays and most collections are mutable types while Int32, Uri, and String are immutable types. For fields that hold a mutable reference type, the read-only modifier prevents the field value from being overwritten but does not protect the mutable type from modification. This simply restates the behaviour of readonly without explaining why it's bad to use readonly. The implication appears to be that many people do not understand what "readonly" does and will wrongly expect readonly fields to be deeply immutable. In effect it advises using "readonly" as code documentation indicating deep immutability - despite the fact that the compiler has no way to enforce this - and disallows its use for its normal function: to ensure that the value of the field doesn't change after the object has been constructed. I feel uneasy with this recommendation to use "readonly" to indicate something other than its normal meaning understood by the compiler. I feel that it encourages people to misunderstand the meaning of "readonly", and furthermore to expect it to mean something that the author of the code might not intend. I feel that it precludes using it in places it could be useful - e.g. to show that some relationship between two mutable objects remains unchanged for the lifetime of one of those objects. The notion of assuming that readers do not understand the meaning of "readonly" also appears to be in contradiction to other advice from Microsoft, such as FxCop's "Do not initialize unnecessarily" rule, which assumes readers of your code to be experts in the language and should know that (for example) bool fields are automatically initialised to false, and stops you from providing the redundancy that shows "yes, this has been consciously set to false; I didn't just forget to initialize it". So, first and foremost, why do Microsoft advise against use of readonly for references to mutable types? I'd also be interested to know: Do you follow this Design Guideline in all your code? What do you expect when you see "readonly" in a piece of code you didn't write?

• how to access anti aliasing method of a font with CSS

  I've had this problem in a lot of different webs. You have a font which has different anti-aliasing options, the designer uses the same font with different anti-aliasing options on different parts of the text on the web. So there is a difference between some elements. In this case I have sharp, crisp, strong and smooth. I've used a font generator to get the code to access it via @font-face. Even so, I also have the original .otf if important to know. Is there a method to access this? • Style row banding and selection in tr:table using CSS

  I've got a tr:table that I need to style using CSS. All the normal style functions of a table are working, but row banding and row selection aren't coming up. When I view the rendered source, I'm not seeing a difference in the rows for an id or class to grab on to, and the official documentation doesn't have any attributes for declaring a style class for either. First, using the declaration above tells jsf to generate a table, and the attribute rowBandingInterval tells it to give each row alternating colors (If it was set to 2, then it would do 2 rows one color, 2 rows another, 2 rows the original, etc.) Once the page gets rendered into standard html, trinidad (and jsf) apply their own classes and IDs to the html. My normal procedure is to look at the rendered html, find the class that it is appling and add CSS rules for it. However in this case, no additional styles are added (nothing in the rendered html denotes one row to be different from another). So the question is, how do I tell trinidad to either give alternating rows and the user selected row different classes/IDs for me to grab on to with CSS?

• How to pair users? (Like Omegle.com)

  Hi, I'm trying to do an Omegle.com clone script, basically for learning purposes. I'm doing it in PHP/MySQL/AJAX. I'm having problems finding two users and connecting them. The purpose of omegle is connecting two users "randomly". What I'm doing right now is the following: When a user enters the website a session is assigned. There are 3 states for each session/user (Normal,Waiting,Chatting) At first the user has state Normal and a field "connected_to" = NULL If the users clicks the START button, a state of "Waiting" is assigned. Then it looks for another user with state Waiting, if doesn't find one then it keeps looping, waiting for the "connected_to" to change. The "connected_to" will change when other user click START and then find another user waiting and updates the sessions accordingly. Now this have several problems, like: A user only can be connected to one user at a time. In omegle you can open more than one chat simultaneously. I don't know if this is the best way. About the chat, each user is polling the events from the server with AJAX calls, I saw that omegle, instead of several HTTP requests each second (let's say), does ONE request and wait for an answer, that means that the PHP script is looping indefinitely until gets an answer.I did this using set_time_limit(30) each time the loop is started. Then when the Ajax call is done start over again. Is this approach correct? I will appreciate a LOT your answers, Thank you, Carlos

• Run Visual Studio with Administrator Rights using app.manifest [ExecutionLevel]

  I need to change the key in a registry in order to restrict the user from using Task Manager, since it is an Kiosk application. My code for changing the registry is working perfectly for Administrator account. But my application is going to be run in normal user account. When i tried to run my application in normal user account, i get the below error : DisableTaskManagerSystem.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the registry key 'HKey_Current_User\Software\Mictrosoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System' is denied. at Microsoft.win32.RegistryKey.win32Error(int32 errorcode, String str) So i need to run my application with all administrator privileges. For which i am using the below app.manifest. But some how i getting the same error. How to overcome this ?
