• Unable to uninstall SQL Server express

  When I try, I receive the following error message: A computer restart is required. You must restart this computer before installing SQL Server. Of course, I have restarted the computer :-) I'm not really sure how to proceed. The version that sql server reports when I query it is: SQL Server 10.0.1600.22 - RTM (Express Edition with Advanced ) Solved: As it turns out, I had to end up uninstalling logitech's quick cam pro software. Although the fix below did not directly resolve it, the value of that registry key led me to discovering the solution by querying for it online :-) thanks!!!

  Please explain what is required to set up a SQL Server linked server. Server A is SQL 2005 windows logins only Server B is the same (SQL 2005 windows logins only) Server A runs windows XP Server B runs Windows Server 2003 Both SQL Server services are running under the same domain account. I am logged into my workstation with a domain account that has administrative rights on both SQL Servers. Note these are both SQL Server 2005 SP2 - I've had old hotfixes pointed out to me, but those are already applied. The issue I am having is this error: "Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18456)"

• DNS/Apache config to change ServerName on Mac OS X and LAN

  Hi, I want to run an apache web server on a machine running OS X, with the server running on a small intranet LAN with no internet connection. I've set up web sharing and the web server is now accessible from other machines on the LAN using the custom name a.local - but what I would like to do is remove the .local part if possible. Does anyone know how i would go about configuring this in OS X? I wasn't sure if it would be the apache httpd.conf file or some DNS config that would be required.

• How to configure Apache2 to host Django and PHP on multiple domains simultaneously?

  I have a VPS (Ubuntu 10.04) that hosts multiple domains, one of them being a CodeIgniter (PHP) web app. The others are just static websites, no fancy backend languages required. Well I am starting a new project and want to use Django. I have Django installed, mod_wsgi enabled in Apache2, but when I did the first steps on the documentation (https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/howto/deployment/wsgi/modwsgi/) it seemingly overwrote my existing Apache2 configuration and served up the Django welcome page to all my domains. What should my httpd.conf file should look like so that it doesn't overtake all my domains.

• Root access on media temple.com dv server

  This may be a dumb question. I just purchased dv access at media temple.com. I set up root access as required, set up a root access password. Now, for the life of me I can not figure out how this password gets used. Everywhere i try to use the password it does not work. Even tried to ssh with Putty and that didnt work either. Can somebody possibly explain to me what this root access is and how I use it. Im a newbie just trying to learn something new.

• Cross platform support for network attached USB hubs?

  I am looking at network-attached USB hubs in order to run licensed software in a virtualized environment when hardware dongles are required. Are there any solutions that will work with both Linux and Windows? Most of the dedicated devices -- such as the Zonet ZUH2214 or the (oddly expensive) Digi AnywherUSB/2 -- appear to be Windows-only. Linux has the the USB/IP project, for which there appear to be Windows drivers, but the last "News" post on the site was in 2007, so I'm not entirely confident about the viability of the project. Has anyone out there found a solution that will work well in both environments?

• Web based library management (FOSS) application

  I'm looking for a FOSS web-based library management application. I want to manage the few books we have at our company, and I'm looking for applications that provide a simple web interface to: Add new books. Search for books. (Not Required) Place holds on books. My ideal would be something like Delicious Library, but web based and open source. I've looked at Koha (which I could not install), Emilda, which seems to be a dead project (last emails are from 2006 and I could not install it) and VuFind which looks awesome but doesn't provide (or I could not find) an interface to add new records to the library. Any suggestions?

• Stack , data and address space limits on an Ubuntu server

  I am running an Ubuntu server which has around 5000 users. The users are allowed to SSH in to the system. So in order to cap the memory used up by a process I have capped the address space limits using limits.conf. So my question is , should I be limiting the data and stack ? I feel that is not required since I am capping address space. Are there any pitfalls if I do not cap the stack and data limits?

• Can't Install Windows 2008 R2 on Lenovo Laptop With SSD

  I am trying to install Windows Server 2008 R2 on a new Lenovo X201 or T410 laptop. Setup halts with the following pop-up: A required CD/DVD device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now. Note: If the windows installation media is in the CD/DVD drive you can safely remove it for this step. The CD drive is obviously working, as it's booting from CD to get to this point. The only thing I can think is that it is to do with the fact they have SSD disks in - but that's just a guess. (Edit - One extra thing that may or may not be relevant: it's the 64 bit version of Server 2008 R2)

I want to configure my module for a particular sub domain of the host server. Lets say I want my module to work only for onclick.localhost , then what are the directives required ? I want the module to be invoked only for the hosts/virtualhosts for which it has been configured explicitly. I know how to setup sub domains in Apache, so that's not a problem. Thanks.

• Setting up kerberos for SQL Server 2008 R2 not taking effect

  I am trying to configure Kerberos for my SQL Server (the database engine domain account). I have executed the following command: SETSPN -A MSSQLSvc/MyDBServer:1433 MyDomain\SQLServerService Replacing MyDBServer with the FQDN of the server and replacing MyDomain\SQLServerService with the name of my account. I then ran the query: SELECT s.session_id , c.connect_time , s.login_time , s.login_name , c.protocol_type , c.auth_scheme , s.HOST_NAME , s.program_name FROM sys.dm_exec_sessions s JOIN sys.dm_exec_connections c ON s.session_id = c.session_id This returns NTLM. So it's not Kerberos. What am I mising? The delegation tab is available for the account, so the spn bit worked perfectly fine. Is it not required to set some settings in the delegation tab? I've seen this in the case of setting kerberos for Sharepoint 2010 (which I intend to setup). Thanks

• ASP.NET Security Exception when Switch IIS7 to Use UNC Path for Content

  I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 box running IIS7.5 with Medium Trust configured for ASP.NET. When I have the website running from local content (e.g.: c:\inetpub\wwwroot) everything works fine. When I change IIS to use a UNC path for the content (e.g.: \\computer\wwwroot) I get the following error: Security Exception Description: The application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy. To grant this application the required permission please contact your system administrator or change the application's trust level in the configuration file. Exception Details: System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlClientPermission, System.Data, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed. I'm trying to figure out why ASP.NET/IIS would allow for the SQL call when using local content but not when using a UNC path. Any ideas what I need to do to use a UNC path from IIS7 properly?

• Can I issue wireless clients with IP address on different subnet?

  We have a very standard setup with a Windows Server 2003 domain controller issuing IP addresses using DHCP. This works fine. Internet access is managed via Microsoft ISA Server 2006 Standard. Clients are required to authenticate and this works fine. We now need to provide wireless internet access to visitors for laptops, iPhones etc. We've bought a couple of Netgear access points so I was thinking we might be able to issue wireless clients connected to it with an IP address on a different subnet and then allow non-authenticated Internet access via the ISA Server for that IP range. Does that sound plausible? I'm not even sure if I can issue a different subnet to wireless clients.

• WinXP Movie Maker Codec Error

  Hi, I'm trying to use Windows XP Movie Maker, but when I try to import an AVI video, it shows an error telling me that it wasn't import due to an the fact that the codec wasn't available (I'm able to see the video using the windows media player) First, the error message suggested to enable the option "download codecs automatically" under "tools options general". I did it. But know the error tells me that the codec wasn't available and, if I already installed it, I should reinitialize movie maker. I also already did it... The error msg is: The file D:\movie1.avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again. Any hint? TIA, Bob

• Oracle Installation issue on Oracle Linux 6.4

  I am trying to install Oracle 11g(11.2.0.1.0) on Oracle Linux 6.4(Remote Server). I get the following error(s) when Database Configuration Assistant is running ORA-01092: ORACLE instance terminated Disconnection forced ORA-48210: Relation Not Found Can someone help me regarding this errors, I cant seem to find what exactly that I have to do to solve this issue. I have done the same install on Oracle Linux 5.7 but never faced this issue before. The only problem while installing(which happens on 5.7 too) is that the required packages fail, but upon checking, it seems much higher versions are already installed. Also I cant do a yum update because the system seems to have connectivity issues with public-yum.oracle.com as I cant ping it(even though the IP Address gets resolved)

• Why might login failures cause SQL 2005 to dump and ditch?

  Our SQL 2005 server began timing out and finally stopped responding on Oct 26th. The application logs showed a ton of 17883 events leading up to a reboot. After the reboot everything was fine but we were still scratching our heads. Fast forward 6 days... it happened again. Then again 2 days later. The last night. Today it has happened three times to far. The timeline is fairly predictable when it happens: Trans log backups. Login failure for "user2". Minidump Another minidump for the scheduler Repeated 17883 events. Server fails little by little until it won't accept any requests. Reboot is all that gets us going again (a band-aid) Interesting, though, is that the server box itself doesn't seem to have any problems. CPU usage is normal. Network connectivity is fine. We can remote in and look at logs. Management studio does eventually bog down, though. Today, for the first time, we tried stopping services instead of a reboot. All services stopped on their own except for the SQL Server service. We finally did an "end task" on that one and were able to bring everything back up. It worked fine for about 30 minutes until we started seeing timeouts and 17883's again. This time, probably because we didn't reboot all the way, we saw a bunch of 844 events mixed in with the 17883's. Our entire tech team here is scratching heads... some ideas we're kicking around: MS Cumulative Update hit around the same time as when we first had a problem. Since then, we've rolled it back. Maybe it didn't rollback all the way. The situation looks and feels like an unhandled "stack overflow" (no relation) in that it starts small and compounds over time. Problem with this is that there isn't significant CPU usage. At any rate, we're not ruling SQL 2005 bug out at all. Maybe we added one too many import processes and have reached our limit on this box. (hard to believe). Looking at SQLDUMP0151.log at the time of one of the crashes. There are some "login failures" and then there are two stack dumps. 1st a normal stack dump, 2nd for a scheduler dump. • How can I stop Ubuntu from playing audio from 2 interfaces at the same time?

  Hi there, I just loaded Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick on my home machine. The machine is running a Core2Duo E6750 on an MSI motherboard with an Nvidia GTX260-OC Graphics card. The problem I am having as stated in the title is for some reason Ubuntu is playing audio through my headphone coming out from the computer and it is also playing the audio at the exact same time through the HDMI connection coming out of the graphics card, it has a plug to allow this. What is going on, I have never seen this before. Most importantly of all can it be fixed so that I can sepertate the 2 interfaces, the one is a standard PC audio IO and the HDMI one is connected through the mobo's internal SPDIF. More information can be provided if required.

• Windows Live Messenger replacement

  I really do not like the Windows Live Messenger interface, and every time they revise it, it gets even worse. I want to use a replacement, ... but I don't want to lose the message history. My company uses Messenger for discussion of technical problems, and I often need to visit the history to find a previous discussion. Is there any substitute client that will use/continue the message history? It must also support file transfer. I'm running Windows XP/Pro, as required by my company.

• Looking for a good free or cheap task tracking system

  I've finally decided that pen and paper/whiteboards are not up to the job as my workload increases so I'm looking for a good task tracking system. I need something that can track tasks in categories (projects) and allow me to assign priority to each task. I've tried iTeamWork which requires projects to have an end time which is no good for me as at least one of my projects is ongoing. I also tried Teamly which was required tasks to be set to a specific day which is no good as tasks sometimes take more than a day and I would like them organised by priority rather than specific days. Preferably looking for something hosted but I'm happy to install on our servers if it supports PHP/MySQL. Oh, and an iPhone client would be the icing on the cake! Can anyone recommend anything?

• Second partition with Windows 7 unmountable

  I'm using GRUB2 to dualboot Ubuntu and Windows 7. I installed Windows 7 some days ago and rewrote GRUB2 to cope with the dualboot. Everything went fine till yesterday - I could boot into both OS. Since this morning my laptop restarts every time I choose Windows 7 from the menu. Ubuntu is still working. As I tried to mount the partition with Windows 7 on Ubuntu it gave me return code 2, so this isn't working as well. I tried to reinstall GRUB2 to the MBR but it didn't help. I also tried to repair Windows 7 boot with it's install DVD, while trying so it showed me the following error: "Status: 0xc000000f Info: Boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible."   I have been requested to investigate how I can reduce the downtime of our website upgrades. We maintain a DNN site with both public facing pages and member only pages. The member only pages are directly linked to our core application database while the public pages are not. Our current process is to redirect website users as soon as the upgrade process begins, which includes Backup of the Prod DB Update Prod DB Update Executables (Application) Upgrade Website Application (If this requires an update) Install Dependencies Upgrade sub systems like communication engine and payment broker Update various configuration files Perform testing of systems Restart all services Allow access to site This process can take from 2 to 8 hours depending on upgrade required, scripts to be run, size of database and number or portals. My initial thoughts are to restrict users to read only pages and any update pages would be unavailable. Could anyone please offer suggestions as to the best practices for what I would think to be a common problem so that we can reduce this down time and if we need infrastructure changes, I can put this to our technical department.

• URL Redirection in Multisite wordpress

  We have multi-site wordpress containing more then 50 blogs/sub-site. Our base URL to wordpress site is www.example.com/base-site/ and we have other sub-sites in it like www.example.com/base-site/site1 site2 ... etc. Now My question is to redirect the main-site to one of the subsites but a simple redirect 301 is not working. I tried some solutions of mod-rewrite but its not working either for this main-site to redirect to sub-site. • I Can't Get Ruby on Rails + Passenger + Apache to Work

  I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but I can't get Ruby on Rails to work on my Apache server. I'm using Phusion Passenger (mod_rails, mod_rack) for app deployment. Here is my RoR-specific configuration code in my website's Apache configuration file: Alias /rails /var/www/syyborg.com/ruby/blog/public <Directory /var/www/syyborg.com/ruby/blog/public Options FollowSymLinks AllowOverride None Order Allow,Deny Allow from All </Directory RailsBaseURI /rails Again, I really have very little knowledge of this kind of thing; I have never set up a server from scratch before. Anyways, my rails app, as you can see, is located at /var/www/syyborg.com/ruby/blog/. I am trying to access it from http://[my domain, syyborg.com]/rails. However, when I try to load the site, I get a "403 Forbidden" error. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I can provide further details if they are required. Thanks in advance!

• PostgreSQL automatic backup

  I have been trying to set up a backup script on a windows server. I have used pgAgent (scheduling for pgAdmin), to run the backup script. No problems with the backup script. However, my jobs are not running like they should. I have set both the schedule, and the steps. I am fairly certain, that I am running the service under a wrong user or a user without the required permissions. I run the service like this: "C:\Program Files\pgAdmin III\pgAgent" INSTALL pgAgent -u postgres -p secret hostaddr=127.0.0.1 dbname=pgadmin user=postgres And I get an error, telling me that there was an error with the login information, though I know it's correct. When I go under services (controlpanel -- administration -- services), I am able to start the service with the local user. Can this be the problem? Where can I see or change the permissions on the postgres user?
