• Hidden files in Nautilus after extracting ISO

  I need to first point to the image below to explain a bit about what I find weird here: I extracted the informacion from an ISO I from Nautilus I could only see two folders but from the terminal I can see the rest of the files and folders. This folders do not have the . character in from of them to hide them from plain sight. When I try to "Show hidden files" in Nautilus, Nautilus closes itself. It does not show the hidden folders or files. Somehow they are hidden without using the normal dot in the beginning of the name. The have my user permission but no way of seeing them from Nautilus. I can interact with them but the fact that they appear hidden when I can see them inside the ISO and after extracting them they disappear is what confuses me. What permission or setting makes this folders appear hidden and does not let Nautilus show them and like I said before, trying to show them with the "Show hidden files" option crashes Nautilus and exits it. Forcing me to have to open Nautilus again from the Launcher.

• MPlayer does not work

  Using the xubuntu desktop, on Ubuntu Raring updated from Quantal. MPlayer never really worked. No video, no audio, nothing. • The Bing Sting - an alternative opinion

  I know I'm a bit of an MS fanboy at times, but please, am I missing something here? Microsoft, with permission of users, exploits clickstream data gathered by observing user behaviour. One use for this data is to improve Bing queries. Google equips twenty of its engineers with laptops and installs the widgets required to provide Microsoft with clickstream data. It then gets their engineers to repeatedly (I assume) type in 'synthetic' queries which bring back 'doctored' hits. It asks its engineers to then click these results (think about this!). So, the behaviour of the engineers is observed and the resulting clickstream data goes off to Microsoft. It is processed and 'improves' Bing results accordingly.   What exactly did Microsoft do wrong here?   Google's so-called 'Bing sting' is clearly a very effective attack from a propaganda perspective, but is poor practice from a company that claims to do no evil. Generating and sending clickstream data deliberately so that you can then subsequently claim that your competitor 'copied' that data from you is neither fair nor reasonable, and suggests to me a degree of desperation in the face of real competition.   Monopolies are undesirable, whether they are Microsoft monopolies or Google monopolies.    Personally, I'm glad Microsoft has technology in place to observe user behaviour (with permission, of course) and improve their search results using such data. I can only assume Google doesn't implement similar capabilities. Sounds to me as if, at least in this respect, Microsoft may offer the better technology.

• G++ Compiling errors

  Attempting to do some compiling with g++ and when I run g++ test.cpp this is what I get. I am in the correct directory and I have even messed with the permission settings to make those directories chmod 777 as a test, still nothing. Tried running it as sudo g++ test.cpp and getting nothing. It can compile and create a .o if i run g++ -c test.cpp but it can't seem to link it and create the .out. • Virtualization in Ubuntu 11.10

  Since Ubuntu 11.10 use a new kernel, it's very difficult to have a decent support for virtualization. VirtualBox doesn't support guest additions for ubuntu 11.10, so I can't copy to and from my ubuntu desktop and windows, which I absolutely require, plus FreeBSD seems not to be able to use DHCP without guest additions. Virt-manager instead gives an error on launch: Unable to open a connection to the libvirt management daemon. Of course! I really enjoy those free MVA jump starts - live and later the recordings. Actually, I prefer the live ones because you really have a chance to communicate with the MVA studio team and the experts in the chat. Luckily, the live stream is provided in two quality levels and with the remote situation of Mauritius, I always have to switch to 'Standard Quality' to avoid too much buffering and to enjoy a smooth experience. Later on, the recordings are great for rehearsal and repetition of the material. You can download and watch them offline while commuting, or what I'm going to do in the future - to use them as material for a study group within the Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community (MSCC). For sure, this is going to be a lot of fun, and I'm looking forward to work with other Windows-oriented software craftsmen in order to 'push' them towards Microsoft certifications.   I have a J2EE application running on an IBM Websphere Application Server on a Windows Operating System. Given the relatively normal number of threads and heap size a lot lower than the maximum, I am trying to figure out why I see this error? I understand the idea behind it, but will this work if my root node is not a node that is coming from the database or something (therefore, it does not have any id). My root node is some node that I define myself. How would I make an async tree in jquery easy ui to load a bunch of nodes as children of my root node (which, again has no id because it's not coming from the database.   I was writing a console driver for linux and I came across the tty interface that I need to set up for this driver. I got confused as to how tty drivers are bound with low-level drivers. Many times the root file system already contains a lot of tty devices. I am wondering how low-level devices can bind to one of the existing tty nodes on the root file system. For example, /dev/tty7 : Node on the root file system. How does a low-level device driver connect with this node? Or should that low-level device define a completely new tty device?

  i have the problem, that my batch process breaking up each time after call a other batch file. The batch files are used to run a make process out from IBM Rhapsody. There convert the call from Rhapsody to the Visual Studio tools. So nmake will be called from the batch after make different settings. The scripts aren’t written completely from me, I only adapt theme to run under both windows architecture versions, x86 and x64. The first script (vs2005_make.bat) will be called from Rhapsody and run to the “call” statement. The second script (Vcvars_VisualStudio2005.bat) runs to the end. But the first script isn’t resume working, at this point the process break up without a error message. I'm not very familiar with batch files, this is the first time I make more than simple console commands in a batch file. So I hope I have given all information’s which needed, otherwise ask me.   Hello, I am trying to validate Elements and Attributes exist in an XElement. Basically, I was wondering if anyone had a generic way to check if a give path is null. I don't have access to System.Xml.XPath (doing this for compact framework). Basically what I have is: <root value"1000"> <element1>test<element1> <element2>1<element2> .... <element30> <subElement1>stuff</subElement1> </element30> </root> Now I know you can "if this is null do this and that". But since there is upwards of 30 elements that can be under root, which are optional elements, I need a way to grab the value if it exists and convert it to the correct type (which I know) in a nice compact way. Any suggestions?

Depending upon the server, i want to fire the log. In case of Development server, it would fire log from "emailDevelopment". I have a system variable in each server named "ApplicationEnvironment" whose value is Development, Beta, Production based on the server names. • Cant access log files in production.

  I was trying to run my application and check for some output on the production.log. However Rails throws this error. Apache log Rails Error: Unable to access log file. Please ensure that /var/www/somefolder/someapp/log/production.log exists and is chmod 0666. The log level has been raised to WARN and the output directed to STDERR until the problem is fixed. I have performed the necessary chmod 666 production.log to make it work but I realized that the file is under root access. So my file permissions are -rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 20845 2010-03-18 01:18 production.log Im not sure how to allow Rails to access this file. Im fairly new to managing linux production env so I request you to excuse my ignorance.
