• Mounting a TrueCrypt volume over FTP

  Is it possible to mount a TrueCrypt volume file over FTP? Here's how TrueCrypt works with a local file: User inputs path to volume file, enters password TrueCrypt verifies that the password is correct (probably by decrypting the very first part of the volume file?) TrueCrypt reads the directory listing from the volume file and mounts the volume. However, in this step, TrueCrypt does NOT process the whole volume file. The user browses the directory listing and opens a file. TrueCrypt reads only the part of the volume file that contains the file the user wants, and then decrypts it. Once again, TrueCrypt doesn't process the whole volume file - it only reads part of it. The user edits part of the file and saves it. TrueCrypt encrypts the change and edits the volume file. I'm pretty sure it should be possible to mount a volume over FTP, without undermining security and without having to transfer the whole volume file just to read one small part of the volume. Here's how I imagine it: User inputs FTP path to volume file, enters FTP login information, enters password to volume TrueCrypt downloads the very first part of the volume file and verifies that the password is correct TrueCrypt downloads the part of the volume file that contains the directory listing - the data is sent encrypted over FTP and is decrypted locally. • SMTP Relay through exchange

  Hi guys, We have a bit of a problem in that we want our printers to email our contractor whenever they develop a fault. The problem is on our corporate network we have no access through the firewall to the internet preventing us to use the external SMTP server. So i suppose the question is can we use our exchange server to do this? IE could I run an SMTP service that would forward to the exchange server which would then send the mail to the contractor?   When I run the following script line locally on an SQL Server machine, it executes perfectly: Backup-SqlDatabase -ServerInstance $serverName -Database $sqldbname -BackupFile "$($backupFolder)$($dbname)_db_$($addinionToName).bak" $serverName contains a short name of the SQL Server instance. SQL Server is 2012, so these new cmdlets work like a charm. • Grep a strange acirc character

  I have this character appearing in places in some files I have:  (if you can't see it or it looks like a question mark it's the Acirc character (capital A with a circumflex over it)) I simply want to grep replace this char with a space, however when I do this: grep --color -ri  myproject.php Putty gets very confused, as does grep. As I understand it there's probably a way to use an escaped hex code with grep.. does anyone know how? EDIT: The character is showing up on my web page as a weird <?>. The http headers for the page specify utf-8 as does the meta character set and I still see the strange character. In putty it appears as a space (putty also set to utf-8.) When I copy from vim and paste into grep it simply doesn't find it. Cheers, John

  I am working in google spreadsheets and I am trying to do some counting that takes into consideration cell values across multiple cells in each row. Here's my table: |AUTHOR| |ARTICLE| |VERSION| |PRE-SELECTED| ANDREW GOLF STREAM 1 X ANDREW GOLF STREAM 2 X ANDREW HURRICANES 1 JOHN CAPE COD 1 X JOHN GOLF STREAM 1 (Google doc here) Each person can submit multiple articles as well as multiple versions of the same article. Sometimes different people submit different articles that happen to be identically named (Andrew and John both submitted different articles called "Golf Stream"). Multiple versions written by the same person do not count as unique, but articles with the same title written by different people do count as unique. So, I am looking to find a formula that Counts the number of unique articles that have been submitted [4] (without having to manually create extra columns for doing CONCATS, if possible) It would also be great to find formulas that: Count the number of unique articles that have been pre-selected (marked "X" in "PRE-SELECTED" column) [2] Count the number of unique articles that have only 1 version [4] Count the number of unique articles that have more than 1 of their versions pre-selected 1 Thank you so much! • Windows 7: Windows Firewall: Logging/Notifying on Outgoing Request Attempts

  I'm trying to configure Windows Firewall with Advanced Security to log and tell me when programs are trying to make outbound requests. I previously tried installing ZoneAlarm, which worked wonders for me with this in XP, but now, I'm unable to install ZA on Win7. My question is, is it possible to somehow monitor a log or get notifications when a program tries to do that if I set all outbound connections to auto-block, so that I can then create a specific rule for the program and block it.? Thanks! UPDATE: I've enabled all the logging options available through the Properties windows of the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security Console, but I am only seeing logs in the %systemroot%\system32\LogFiles\Firewall\pfirewall.log file, not in the Event Viewer, as the first answer suggested. However, the logs that I can see only tell me the request's or response's destination IP and whether the connection was allowed or blocked, but it doesn't tell me what executable it comes from. I want to find out the file path of the executable that each blocked request comes from. So far, I haven't been able to.

• Domain DNS Lookup time

  I have a website hosted at www.doondoo.com. The site when loaded in the browser for the first time, takes a bit of time to load. It looks like the DNS lookup takes a lot of time. Once the site is loaded on the browser, other pages load very quickly. The application is hosted on Linode and I have pointed my domain to the nameservers of Linode i.e ns1.linode.com and ns2.linode.com I wanted to know what is the reason behind this delay in the loading. • Looking for the best ec2 setup for 3 sites totaling in 1.5 mil in traffic monthly

  I am looking to consolidate our current aws setup of 2 Large ubuntu ec2 servers and 2 large RDS server for our 3 websites that have a total of about 1.5 million hits a month and increasing every month with the majority of traffic (1 mil) to one forum site in the group and the rest of traffic to an ecommerce site and a small wordpress site. So here is my question/thought? Would it be better for us to combine the two ec2 large servers to just one and same with the 2 RDS servers so we run all three sites off one large ec2 and one RDS. -or- Should we setup maybe 2-3 smaller ec2 servers load balenced and a single RDS. -or- Something completely different setup? One concern is that if one site crashes it takes with it the others. It happened in the past but I am pretty sure its because of the forum software and not the server setup. -john

• Unable to copy files previously extracted from archives created on a Mac, even after claiming ownership

  I reinstalled Windows on my computer today, and backed up my music to a USB drive. Now, I'm trying to copy the files onto my fresh Windows partition, but I'm unable to copy files that I obtained within my previous Windows installation from zip archives created on Macs. When I try to copy those previously-extracted files, I get an error saying that I need permission from S-1-5-21-...-1000 (a bizarre long ID). The first thing I tried was to take ownership of the files by setting my new user account as the owner, but that resulted in errors saying that I need permission from myself! Some Googling suggested adding antivirus suggestions, so I excluded the relevant folders from Microsoft Security Essentials, but the issue persists. For what it's worth, it seems that some program (so far I've only installed Chrome, Microsoft Security Essentials, and the latest Windows updates) created an empty folder named 601c8c7f0e0c03f725 at the root of my external USB hard drive. What gives?

• Merging Two KML Files to Display Them with Different Marker Icons on Google Maps

  Let's say that I have two spreadsheets with addresses. I uploaded these spreadsheets into Google Fusion Tables, geocoded the addresses, and exported the results as KML files. Now, I want to take these two KML files and merge them, while maintaining the location data and using it to map the points with Google Maps. Well, I found a way to easily merge the KML files: import both of them into a "My Maps" map with Google Maps! However, my problem is this: when I do that, all of the locations in my data have the same marker icon on the map. From past experience, I know that these markers can be somehow defined inside the KML files. Is it possible to combine these two KML files while giving one's points one marker icon and the other's points another marker icon? Just in case my question is confusing, what I mean, is giving the first set of points blue markers, for example, and the other set of points red markers, so that they can be overlayed.

• Installation Error on Windows Vista: "Side-by-Side configuration is incorrect"

  NOTE: This is not a dupe of this other question. That question refers to a similar problem with 2 programs, while I'm only having it with 1, so the solution there doesn't apply to my situation. My relative asked me to install H&R Block 2009 on his Windows Vista 32-bit computer. I ran the installation program, which succeeded, but when I try to open the application itself, it gives me the following error: The application failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail. Here are the steps I've done so far to try and remedy this problem: In elevated command prompt, run the command: sfc /scannow Uninstall H&R Block 2009 Uninstall Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Reinstall Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable by downloading from MSFT website Reinstall H&R Block 2009 This didn't fix it. I've searched for a long time and haven't found anything that works. The H&R Block site itself states that the way to fix this problem is to uninstall and reinstall H&R Block 2009. Has anyone run into this issue before? If so, how can I fix it? Thanks in advance.

  I recently installed the game watch dogs After installing it i upgraded the drivers on my graphics card AMD Radion R9 200 series via the catalyst software and since then windows has been crashing on an ad-hoc basis even when sitting idle I have recieved two different sets of errors OXOOOOOOO1 and VIDEO_SCHEDULER_INTERNAL_ERROR I am running windows 8.1 with the driver 14.4 from AMD My PC shouldnt really be having this problem as it is pretty high spec due to my work Any help would be greatly appreciated as it is driving me up the walls a bit [UPDATE 08-06-2014] I have been looking around online and have crashed the PC a few times now trying to recreate the bug I have looked into the event history viewer and gotten the following errors amdacpusrsvc acpusrsvc: IOCTL_ACPKSD_KSD_TO_USR_SVC_SET_FB_APERTURES: FAILED acpusrsvc: GfxMemServiceInitialize: FAILED amdacpusrsvc acpusrsvc: IOCTL_ACPKSD_KSD_TO_USR_SVC_SET_FB_APERTURES: FAILED amdacpusrsvc acpusrsvc: GfxMemServiceInitialize: FAILED I took some advice from the AMD forums to re-install the old drivers to see if they would work. I uninstalled the old ones first and installed directly from the CD I got the warnings below but the driver installed "successfully" The Warnings are amdacpusrsvc acpusrsvc: ConfigureFrameBufferMemory: FAILED. Hopefully this will spark something off for someone Thanks John

• IIS 7 URL Rewrite to GeoServer running on Apache

  I'm building a mapping application based on OpenLayers that uses GeoServer to serve up mapping data. The problem I'm having is that besides the map images I'm requesting through WMS, I'm using jQuery AJAX to get information from GeoServer. As GeoServer is running on a different port, my requests are being blocked due to cross-site scripting security policies in JavaScript. As a Java application, GeoServer runs on Apache on port 8080, while my IIS instance is running on port 80. Instead of building a proxy, I've decided to use URL Rewriting in IIS7 to fix this problem. I'm following this guide, but it's still not working. Here are my URL Rewrite rule settings: Matches URL: (.*) Condition: {HTTP_URL} matching /geoserver Action: rewrite to http://localhost:8080/{R:1}, appending query string When I request http://localhost/geoserver/wms?QUERY_LAYERS=SanDiego:FWSA_sandiego&LAYERS=SanDiego:FWSA_sandiego&SERVICE=WMS&VERSION=1.1.1&FEATURE_COUNT=20&REQUEST=GetFeatureInfo&EXCEPTIONS=application/vnd.ogc.se_xml&BBOX=-13009123.590156,3862057.2905992,-13006066.109025,3865114.7717302&INFO_FORMAT=text/html&x=20&y=20&width=40&height=40&srs=EPSG:900913, however, all I get is a 404, although the same request on port 8080 returns the proper result.   I'm in the mid of researching for one of the best hosting control panels. The server I run is Ubuntu and I have some experience with ISPConfig 2 & 3. Since I haven't explored any others available, what are the recommended ones for an Ubuntu server? I asked because I find that there seems to be some disabling and modifications required for an Ubuntu server if I need to use ispconfig which causes the server to change its actual way of running. It's quite good though, but any more recommended ones ? Something more organic? which doesn't require much breaking and changing. I'm not asking for the simple one, I don't mind going extra mile to install a powerful one but just try sticking with most Ubuntu's conventions will be an ideal one for me. And of course, if there happens to be something that meets the requirement as mentioned "Ubuntu conventions" and also simple to install at the same time, that'd be a bonus. Thanks in advance.

• Guestfish not found on Debian 7 when execute virt-copy-in [on hold]

  When I execute virt-copy-in command on a kvm host(Debian7.1), I got error saying "guestfish not found". However according to the dpkg comamnd, guestfish do have been installed: john@sver:~$ dpkg-query -l | grep guestfs* ii libguestfs-perl ... ii libguestfs-tools ... ii libguestfs0 ... What's the problem? Is the libguestfs-tools not the guestfish in Debian? Or it's just a broken dependency in libguestfs-tools in Debian7.1(my KVM Host)?

• wmware fusion 5.0.1, LAN, disconnecting from server [closed]

  Currently I am using : OSX 10.7.5 VMWare:5.0.1 with windows 7 professional Problem: Getting disconnected from LAN game. Description: 4 of us are trying to play frozen throne on the same network. The thing is, they are all running windows computers, and I am running W7 on VMware. I haven't made any adjustments other than changing from "sharing internet with my mac" to Bridged network "autodetect". When we start to play, everything works then all of a sudden I get disconnected. This happens every once in a while, the timing differs from time to time. None of the others ever disconnects. What could be the problem? Thanks for the help!

• When DNS doesn't cache

  We've had some odd DNS problems over the past couple of days that I don't fully understand. Some of our DNS names stopped resolving for some of our customers due to some 'unknown' server reconfiguration at our DNS provider. The problem seemed to be intermittent i.e. stopped working and started working within a few minutes over a couple of days. I'm no expert on DNS, but I'd have expected DNS caches to prevent this sort of thing from happening - when we need to change an IP address for a DNS record, it can take 24 hours to propogate, so how can our DNS provider be breaking name resolution intermittently for our customers so easily? Shouldn't the DNS caches kick in here? We had a similar problem about a month ago when one of their nameservers 'decided to reload the DNS database from scratch' - this broke our name resolution too. Again, why didn't the caches satisfy the name resolution requests. Any guesses would be appreciated. John

• Adding a single 300Gb SCSI drive to poweredge 2850

  I have a 2850 setup with 3 146Gb drives, two partitions 1 12GB system with server 2003 sp2 and 1 261Gb Data. I am strapped on disk space on the data partition having to push data around. I wanted to add a 300Gb single drive for lesser critical data, is this possible? Or is it best to add 2 300Gb drives for another RAID 1 configuration? This is my church network and while it is mission critical it is not enterprise so I can take it down for a few hours. Any pointers to documentation or direct help would be greatly appreciated. John

  I have around 630 MBs of an MP3 podcast that I want to burn to a CD so that a friend can listen to it while driving. I understand that MP3 is very different from the normal audio CD format, but would it be possible to fit this amount onto a typical 700mb CD in the correct (non-MP3) format?   I set up a Microsoft Exchange account on my iOS device to sync my Gmail contacts. But Microsoft Exchange is ignoring phone numbers that are labeled as 'iPhone' or 'main'.   After days of trying all sorts of tutorials I finally found a simple solution (not necessary the best) for a functional ubuntu mail server: sudo aptitude install postfix next type sudo dpkg-reconfigure postfix and configure like this: Internet Site yourdomain.com john (type your ubuntu user) yourdomain.com, localhost.localdomain, localhost No 127.0.0.0/8 [::ffff:127.0.0.0]/104 [::1]/192.168.0.1/24 (192.198.0.1 replace with your server ip address) 0 + all next install mail-stack-delivery sudo aptitude install mail-stack-delivery At this point you have a working mail server. Next, I configured SquirrelMail and start sending and receaving mail. This configuration worked with both Apache and Nginx.
