  I have a string : var str = "12345a45";//position is 6 here now i want the position of 'a'(alphabet) in that string similarly i have few more string like this: var str1 = "1234567a45";//position is 8 here var str2 = "12345a4";//position is 6 here var str3 = "123a";//position is 4 here var str4 = "a45";//position is 1 here Now what i thought of doing is , just searching the string from last and know the occurrence of any alphabet in that strings. any help will be appreciated . thanks.

  Sample Data : input : "abcdacdc" Output : "cadb" here we have to sort strings in order of count of characters. If the count is same for characters. maintain the original order of the characters from input string. my approach: i have used array of 26 for maintaining occurrence of all characters and sort it then print it.But while doing so i am not able to maintain order in case if two characters have same count. please suggest any improvement or any other algo.

  I'm using GNU bash, version 3.00.15(1)-release (x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu). And this command: echo "-e" doesn't print anything. I guess this is because "-e" is one of a valid options of echo command because echo "-n" and echo "-E" (the other two options) also produce empty strings. The question is how to escape the sequence "-e" for echo to get the natural output ("-e").

I'm NOT asking how to escape the quotes with slashes, that's obvious.   I've got a utility that outputs a list of files required by a game. How can I run that utility within a C program and grab its output so I can act on it within the same program? UPDATE: Good call on the lack of information. The utility spits out a series of strings, and this is supposed to be complete portable across Mac/Windows/Linux.
