• MVC 2 in 2 Minutes!

  In a couple of recent Code Camps, I’ve given my presentation: Top 10 Ways MVC 2 Will Boost Your Productivity. In the presentation, I cover all major new features introduced in MVC 2 with a focus on productivity enhancements. To drive the point home, I conclude with a final demo where I build a couple of screens from scratch highlighting many (but not all) of the features previously covered in the talk. A couple of weeks ago, I was asked to make it available online so here it is. In 2 minutes the demo builds a couple screens from scratch that provide a goal setting tracker for a user. • Speaking at PASS 2012 Summit in Seattle #sqlpass

  I will deliver two sessions at the next PASS Summit 2012: one is title Inside DAX Query Plans and the other is Near Real-Time Analytics with xVelocity (without DirectQuery).These will be two sessions that require a lot of preparation and even if I have already much to say, I still have a long work to do this summer in order to go deeper in several details that I want to investigate for completing these sessions.I already look forward to come back in Seattle!In the meantime, you have to study SSAS Tabular and if you want to get a real jumpstart why not attending one of the next SSAS Tabular Workshop Online? • Sending files via HTTP to web service

  I am bit frustrated at the lack of information about this online. Here is the issue: I am in charge of creating a iOS application which sends sound data back and forth between the server and the app. The Audio is in small files and thus does not need to be streamed over, but rather it can be sent. Right now, I am using a TCP server I wrote to handle applications like this. However, I want to keep the system as simple as possible and writing your own server and client sockets can get a bit complex and leaves room for crashes. Overall it slows down development because I need to account for packet structure and other things. My question is, can I write an ASPX or PHP web service that lets me pass the files back and forth through GET or POST?

• Does anyone know of any work being done on EEE transformer?

  I recently got a (few) nexus 7's to install and enjoy ubuntu on. Which is great and all, but from what I've read online and the issues I have experienced myself the Nexus 7 has way to many serious defects. Such as: Audio jack not working Screen lifting Screen ghosting out (The very first one) Instant drop in battery life (happened to one of mine) Internal memory malfunctions (The latest issue I've had, the internal memory went completely bad) If you need to read other horror stories you can simply check out XDA developers forum, lots of people are having issues. I'd really like to enjoy ubuntu on a different device, I think the Transformer prime would make way more sense (usability and stability wise). Have there been any hacks/mods to get it running on this device?

• Install Java on Ubuntu server (Parallels Plesk)

  I want to install Java to my server so I can use PHP shell_exec to compile Java online. So I'm trying to install Java on my webserver (Ubuntu - Parallels Plesk). I logged in to the server with PuTTY and tried some commands like: sudo apt-get install openjdk-6-jre or sudo apt-get install oracle-java7-installer But than I get error's like: Package drweb-bases must be reinstalled, but there can be no archive found. I tried to uninstall drweb-bases, reinstall, no matter what. I still get that error. What you I need to do? I am doing it completly wrong? Am I not destroying my webserver? There is not much to find on this topic on Google.

• Coordinating team code review sessions [closed]

  My question has two parts: 1) In your team or organization, do you ever do in-person code reviews with all or part of a team, as opposed to online reviews using some sort of tool? 2) How do you structure these meetings? Do you choose to focus on one person's code in a given meeting? Do you look at everything? Take a random sample? Ask people on the team what they'd like to have looked at of theirs? I'd love to add this practice to my development team, so I'd like to hear how others are doing it.

• Why Ubuntu One pretends to sychronize files, but it doesn't?

  I have my Ubuntu One account configured in both Ubuntu 11.10 and iOS (ipod-touch). The photos from the iOS were successfully uploaded, but in Ubuntu One, although it shows the "syncing" and "synchronized" marks over the icons, the files are not showing in the website (one.ubuntu.com). In short: My files are not showing in the Ubuntu One website, although the icons have the "uploaded" mark. Any idea what can be wrong here? obs1: Also, not sure if it's related, the icon-marks will show only when I open the Ubuntu One Control Panel. It shows the message "file was uploaded", but there's nothing online. obs2: The folder I'm trying to synchronize is 30mb size. And my connection is 8mbps.

• What has the most efficient intersection test against an AABB tree - OBB, Cylinder or Capsule?

  I'm currently trying to find collisions in 3D between a tighter volume than an AABB and a tree of AABB volumes. I just need to know whether they are intersecting, no closest distance or collision response. An OBB, Cylinder or Capsule would all roughly fit these purposes but Cylinder and Capsule were the first thing I thought of, which I have found little information about detecting intersections online. Am I right in thinking that they would always be more complex to perform Separating Axis Tests on even though they might seem like simpler shapes? I figure by the time I get my head around SAT for curved shapes I could have done the thing with OBBs but I wanted to find out for sure.

• Tic-Tac-Toe game AI

  I'm looking into creating a simple tic tac toe/noughts and crosses game in Actionscript3 and am trying to understand the ideas behind the AI used in a game like this. I've seen some simplistic examples online but from what I've read a game tree or something like minimax is the best way to go about this. Can anyone help explain or reference any good examples of this? I've seen that there is a library called as3ds - data structures for game developers which has a number of classes that might help tie this together? Any info/examples or help is much appreciated.

• Is it illegal to use content in such a way?

  I have a couple of questions about the legality of the content of some websites. I am currently working on two websites and I would like to make sure I am not breaking any laws, by using some content like I am... Do I need to get a license to use images from the Internet (such as google.images.com) in my site, assuming they aren't a company logo belonging to another company? If not, am I allowed to use it after I modify it with a image editing software? If content such as phone numbers, e-mail addresses, website addresses, and text from websites can be found for free online, and I gather this information for a search engine based site that I am working on and offering this information on a paid basis (similar to google, but more specialized), is something that is legal? Note: I am not 'copying' or redirecting business from anywhere, to my site. The exact opposite, the site I am working on actually helps advertise businesses and make it easier for customers to find them.

You can find a lot of in-depth technical information there and it’s probably worthy of a bookmark to check in on occasionally. One of my favorite types of content on the wiki is the do it yourself hands on labs. We do these at in person events like Oracle OpenWorld and also online for our Virutal SysAdmin Days, and those are great because you can get real-time assistance if you have any questions. But, if you’re eager to learn more about Oracle Linux and don’t want to wait for one of those events, you can step through these labs in your own time. All of the information you need is on the wiki. • Opensource package for securly allowing users to log in and provide information

  I have a site written in mostly php and html. I also have a sql database of personal information like names and addresses. I would like my users to be able to log in to my website with a login I can email or snail mail to them, and view and edit their information on my database. Users can currently enter information online I and store it in my database but they can't view or edit stored information. I can add the code to do this, but when I give users the ability to view information I suddenly have a lot more security concerns. Is there an open source package to deal with allowing users to do something like this? Or is there an established convention for this? I know this is a pretty basic question, and there might be some good literature about it that I have yet to find, so if someone can just point me in the direction of some of that information, or better yet give me firsthand some information about this that would be great.

• Solving programming problems or contributing code?

  What are the best skills to develop for a college graduate?? Should one spend hours/days trying to solve problems on codechef or topcoder or contribute code to open source organizations? My personal experience says solving problems teaches you how to make optimal code and learn new programming techniques (which someone else has researched and made available) to solve problems, whereas contributing to open source teaches you how to organize code (so others can work on it), use coding conventions and make "real" use of what you have learnt so far, blah blah!! Also another thing to note is that many companies are hiring today based on one's problem solving skills (Is this something I should worry about?) P.S. I have done little of online problem solving and little of code contribution (via GSoC), but left confused what I should continue doing (as doing both simultaneously isn't easy).

• Lenovo e530 no wireless Ubuntu 13.04

  For some reason my wireless will not work on my Lenovo e530. I am dual booting ubuntu and windows 8 and my wireless works in windows. I saw online that I should run rfkill. I did that but only bluetooth shows up. There is no difference when I press the wireless fn key either, but it does block bluetooth (as it should). I'm really wanting to get into Ubuntu but this is holding me back. To clarify the wireless device does not show at all after running rfkill.

• Google won't display site

  My website (markasoftware.getenjoyment.net) doesn't seem to be indexed properly by Google (I haven't tried other search engines). When I type in the URL of my site it appears right at the top of the list like it should. When I type in the entire contents of the title, however, the site doesn't appear! The title is quite long (Thermonuclear War Game Online: Thermonuclear War By Mark) and it has little (if any) competition. Have I been punished by Google for some reason, or is it something else? I have received zero hits from search engines. Can someone tell me why my site down't appear?

• Lock Pages in Memory - not deprecated in Denali

  Please note an error in the SQL 2012 documentation for Lock Pages in Memory which indicates that it's deprecated. It's not. Locking pages in memory is a useful feature and there are no plans to deprecate it. It looks like it was accidently included on this page when we made changes to deprecate AWE. • XNA - Debugging/Testing Individual Sprites and Pixel Collision

  I ran through the first training on XNA where you make a shooter game. They did some thing that I would not do and I want to use their starting point to learn more things. I want to try better collision and adding a menu. I saw something online with the sonic physics where they have a frame by frame of sonic moving 1 pixel. See picture below. I am new to development, but I have been programming for years now. What would you guys suggest to try these different things out. How would I simulate a similar frame by frame testing as they do in the above picture? Thanks!

  On July 13, 2012, we plan to upgrade the My Oracle Support HTML-based user interface (UI) with additional functionality that will allow those users remaining on the Flash-based user interface to switch over to the HTML version. Our goal is to provide a single-online support portal so that all My Oracle Support users can benefit from the same features and functionality. Prior to July 13, 2012, users of Oracle On Demand, Oracle CRM On Demand, Taleo, and Oracle Configuration Manager should continue accessing the My Oracle Support Flash-based user interface. After July 13, 2012, the above features and functionality to support these users will be available on the HTML interface. All other users of My Oracle Support can make the switch now.
