• Virtual Lan on the Cloud -- Help Confirm my understanding?

Powers that be, move this question over there.] Please give this a quick read and let me know if I'm missing something before I start trying to make this work. I'm not a systems admin professional, and I'd hate to end up banging my head into the wall if I can avoid it. Goals: Create a 'road-warrior' capable star shaped virtual LAN for consultants who spend the majority of their time on client sites, and who's firm has no physical network or servers. Enable CIFS access to a cloud-server based installation of Alfresco Allow Eventual implementation of some form of single-sign-on ( OpenLDAP server ) access to Alfresco and other server applications implemented in the future Given: All Servers will live in the public internet cloud (Rackspace Cloud Servers) OpenVPN Server will be a Linux disto, probably Ubuntu 9.x, installed on same server as Alfresco (at least to start) Staff will access server applications and resources from client sites, hotels, trains, planes, coffee shops or their homes over various ISP, using their company laptops or personal home desktops.   I don't know if this is a good place to beg for help, but here it goes: basically, I need to run a secure recommender system simulation (C++ console application) in order to meet tonight's deadline, and the faculty's server grid decided to go offline. I could really use something like 10+ (actually, about 16 would be required to meet the deadline) virtual instances of some Linux that has GMP installed... Ideally, they should all have the same specs, because a part of the simulation will represent performance benchmarks. If my question is inappropriate in any way, I kindly ask the administrators to remove it.

• Ubuntu server crashes; need help figuring how to figure out why

  I have a 768 Slice at slicehost.com running Ubuntu Server 8.04.2 LTS (hardy) with a LAMP stack on it that periodically crashes, though why I am not sure. From what I can tell, there is a process that basically goes rogue and consumes all the memory on the slice, suffocating all the other programs running until the whole thing comes to a grinding halt, and I have to do a hard reboot of the slice to get it back up and running again. I can't detect any pattern for this (it seems to happen about once a month, more or less). Here's a screenshot of my console during the last crash: I would assume that a possible cause might a PHP script or an apache configuration rule that might cause the crash if triggered? How would I be able to find out which one is the offending one? I've checked and rechecked all my PHP scripts, and running them doesn't seem to trigger the crash. I've also been able to log on to my system during a crash and see what's running (with top), but I can't tell how the offending process was started, so I can't trace the root of the problem! I know my description is overly generic, but unfortunately my expertise in tracking down the source of these glitches is very limited. If you need any additional information about my system in order to help me figure this out, please let me know in the comments, and I will append it to the question. My only other lead as to the culprit here is Wordpress, which we have installed on this server.   I have domain accounts that I have created as contacts in another trusted domain so that they can see them in their Exchange GAL. I need a way to extract the phone number field from UserA (user account) in DomainA and import it into UserA (contact) in DomainB. I get the logic, it's just the code (vbscript/powershell/whatever) that eludes me. The logic as I see it: Connect to source AD (ou/subtree) Extract user accounts from OU and subcontainers including first name, last name, display name, and phone number Connect to target AD (ou/subtree) Verify/match contact with extract in #2 above based on display name Update phone field with phone number in extract Write log of success and failures Anybody able to help?

I've been googling around and I can't seem to find out how to do the following: A: Change a graph to show a different time period (currently I can only view, day, week, month, year). I would like to possibly view per minute, per hour... or specific intervals such as per 30 minutes, per 4 hours, etc... B(optional, but preferred): Add new graphs with the above criteria(A) above. I am a novice with all things that will possibly be required to do this (such as ssh). I wish I could just go edit a php file as I'm highly experienced in that subject. Thanks for any help!

• EMERGENCY! Update Statement for critical mysql production database now running for 18 hours, need help.

  We have a table with 500 million rows. Unfortunately, one of the columns was int(11), which is a signed int, and it was an incrementing value that just rolled over the 2.1 billion magic number. This immediately caused downtime for about 10.000 users. We discussed many solutions, and decided that we could just roll back this value safely, by say, a billion. But we had to roll it back for every row. Here is what we did: update Table1 Set MessageId = case when MessageId < 1073741824 then 0 else MessageId - 1073741824 end; I tested this on a table with 10 million rows and it took 11 minutes. So I assumed the larger table would take 550 minutes, or 9 hours. This was going to be our biggest downtime in 3 years. (We're a startup). It's now going on 18 hours. What should we do? Please don't say what we should have done. I think we should have updated a few million rows at a time. Is there a way we can see progress? Could Mysql have hung? Using mysql 5.0.22. Thanks!

• I use windows7 and am looking for a tool to help me tag/organize my bookmarks as well as my thoughts and projects.

  I've got my bookmarks in Chrome currently, and am prone to just bookmarking something if it contains any info I may need for the project I'm currently working on. I had found a way to tag them with delicious and then get an export from that into a wordpress test server (with the tags), having a post for each bookmark, but this proved to be a bit of a waste of time, as there's no way to organize it well. Ideally I'd like to find some sort of mind-mapper with a Prezi-like view, that does auto tagging, excerpting and allows me to notate things effectively. Does my dream tool even exist? I've usually got 20+ tags open all at once because there may be something open on each I need to see/know to make my current project work. It's frustrating. Though I'm on Win7, I'm interested to hear about any tools that are out there that work to take your existing bookmarks and help you organize them productively.

• My father wants to learn PHP-MySQL to port his application. What I should do to help?

  My father is a doctor/physician. About 15 years ago he started writing an application to handle his patient's medical records in his clinic at home. The app has the ability to input patient's medical records (obviously), search patients by some criteria, manage medicine stocks, output receipt to printer, and some more CRUDs. He wrote it in dBase III+. A few years later he migrated to FoxPro 2.6 for DOS and finally in a few more years he rewrote his app in Visual FoxPro 9. And now (actually two years ago) he wants to rewrite it in PHP, but he don't know how. The Visual FoxPro version of this app is still running and has no serious problem except sometimes it performs slowly. Usually there are 1-5 concurrent users. The binary and database files are shared via windows share. He did all the coding as a hobby and for free (it is for his own clinic after all). He also use this app in two other offices he managed. Some reasons of why he wants to rewrite in PHP-MySQL: He wants to learn Easier to deploy (?) Easier client setup, need only a browser What should I do to help my father? How should he start? I explored some options: I let my father learn PHP and MySQL (and HTML (and JavaScript?)) from scratch. I create/bundle framework. I'm thinking on bundling CodeIgniter and a web UI framework (any suggestion?) especially to reduce effort on writing presentation codes. What do you think? tl;dr My father (a doctor) wants to rewrite his Visual FoxPro app in PHP-MySQL. He knows very little of PHP and MySQL but he wants to learn. What should I do to help? How should he start? Some facts: My father is 50 years old. His first encounter with a PC is in early 1980s. It was IBM PC with Intel 8088. He knows BASIC. He taught me how to use DOS and how to program with BASIC. The other language he knows fairly well is dBase/FoxPro. I got my bachelor CS degree last year. I want to create a .proj file with targets for clean, compile, deploy, etc. In ant, I would expect my user to run ant -project-help to get a list of the targets with their descriptions.   Hi Guys, I'm trying to setup nginx to serve static files. Basically all I need is to have http://mydomain.com/site_media/ point to /var/django/myproject/site_media. • Need help with yum,python and php in CentOS. (I made a complete mess!)

  Hello, a while back I wanted to install some plugins for Trac but it required python 2.5 I tried installing it (I don't remember how) and the only thing I managed was to have two versions of python (2.4 and 2.5). Trac still uses the old version but the console uses 2.5 (python -V = Python 2.5.2). Anyway, the problem is not python, the problem is yum (which uses python). I am trying to upgrade my PHP version from 5.1.x to 5.2.x. • How should I ask for help in getting my emails to stop bouncing?

  For several months, people have been telling me that emails they sent to me have been bouncing back, marked as undeliverable. The bounce message would contain portions like this: Final-Recipient: rfc822;[email protected] Action: failed Status: 5.7.1 Diagnostic-Code: smtp;550 5.7.1 <[email protected]>... Recipient declines email from 69.64.159.2, <spamhaus-xbl>, Ref: http://www.spamhaus.org/query/bl?ip=69.64.159.2 Clicking the link on the last line, the destination page told me that "this IP address is infected with/emitting spamware/spamtrojan traffic and needs to be fixed." I could temporarily de-list this node by clicking a link on that page, but it would get back on the list and more emails to me to bounce. I own a domain, innerpaths.net, and I normally use [email protected] for my email. I have my domain registrar, namecheap.com, forward all email from innerpaths.net to the email account [email protected]. (BTW, I had this same problem at a former registrar. I changed registrars, hoping that would fix the problem. It didn't.) Trying to isolate the problem, I asked namecheap.com what I should do. Their answer, though substantial, left me scratching my head: We have received feedback from our upstream provider which informed us that the mail server that you are trying to email subscribes to a 3rd party blacklist service which they appear to be listed on at the present time and is causing destination mail server to reject the messages. Being blocked with one of these services can happen to anyone for many reasons and is something that is beyond our control. 3rd party blacklist services require companies whose mail servers they have blacklisted, pay fees in order to be removed from their lists. As we cannot pay fees to blacklist services which require them for removal, you should contact your email provider and have them whitelist our mail server IP address: 69.64.157.73. My best guess is that I should email my ISP, sonic.net, tell them what is going on and ask them to whitelist the IP address 69.64.157.73. (If not, please let me know.) But I want to know what is going on and how email works. I understand that there's a device at location 69.64.159.2 that is doing something bad that causes the "destination mail server [sonic.net's, I assume --gw] to reject the messages." I know that email is sent through multiple devices in a way that eventually gets it to its destination. Beyond that, here are my questions: 1) I thought the Internet "routed around damage." Why does email starting at namecheap.com always (or is it 'sometimes'?) go through 69.64.159.2? 2) Who is the "upstream provider" that the namecheap.com representative mentions, and what is their role? 3) How does having sonic.net's whitelisting namecheap.com's mail server prevent my email being bounced by 69.64.159.2? I've searched the Internet for answers but have found nothing useful. Thanks for whatever answers you can provide.

  I want an outgoing mail server ONLY for multiple domains. I plan to use Postfix as that seems to be the easiest to setup being very new to Ubuntu/Linux. The setup I plan to have are as follows: I want to use virtual domain with postfix i.e. my multiple websites must be able to send an email from each their respective domains i.e. [email protected] is sent from my domain1.com website and [email protected] is sent from domain2.com website This is an outgoing mail server only i.e. I don't want any returned (or otherwise) email sent to my postfix server. Incoming mail is handled by Google Apps/Gmail and is already setup. I already set my SPF recording to designate my mx records and postfix server ip as valid email servers i.e. "v=spf1 mx include:mydomain.com -all" How can I achieve this? I'm frankly a little confused, so some help would be appreciated.   Hi Guys, I have a Ubuntu 9.04 Linux running on Freescale's i.MX515(ARM Cortex based) board with me. There were about 250 updates pending and I did that today, well some of the updates failed because of the infamous errors: E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. E: Couldn't rebuild package cache E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. • Need Help getting perl module DBD::mysql installed for bugzilla on RedHat.

  Hi everyone I am having some issues getting Bugzilla setup, I have the software on the server and am trying to get the pre-rec's setup. I am using RedHat 4.1.2-42. • Nginx + WordPress + HHVM: Why isn't Batcache working? Would Varnish help even more?

  I've heard great things about HHVM, so I've setup a copy of WordPress blog (on another domain) with Nginx (with the Pagespeed module) and HHVM. Right now the benefits are obvious: on the same config, load times are between two and three times faster. I'm trying to speed up things a little bit, and I've also installed Memcached and Batcache. I've installed the memcached package, copied object-cache.php (Pastebin) onto the root folder of the WordPress blog, and after that I've installed the Batcache plugin and copied the advanced-cache.php (Pastebin) file onto the wp-content folder. Also, I've included the line define('WP_CACHE', true); in the wp-config.php file. It seems it doesn't work, though. If I quickly reload the page several times Batcache should show the cached page, but it doesn't. It's easy to check that by reloading (Cmd+R on Chrome on OS X) the page several times and then viewing the page's code. Under the <head> section I should see some batcache stats, but they aren't there. I wonder if someone could give me some hint on this. On a side note, I don't know if I could add some other component in order to help the performance be even better. I'm thing about Varnish, but I'm not sure if it's just useless and it's just another way to the same I'm currently doing. Any other component there? (I'll test CDN for images, minifying js, etc and some other tricks as well, but I'm talking from the server perspective).

• Can anyone help me make my reverse proxy actually cache?

  Hi folks, I'm trying to configure a Reverse Caching Proxy but so far have had no luck. I would preferrably like to use apache (that will be all it will be used for), but am open to solutions using other software that can also run on Mac OS X 10.6 (I have also tried using Varnish and Squid, but with no more luck). We're running a system with about 80 mac mini clients that will be requesting lots of video from a server. To reduce load, we thought we could use Apache (which comes on the macs by default) to cache this video forever (or at least as long as possible) onto the macs' disks. I have managed to get a reverse proxy set up with apache using ProxyPass etc, but when i tried to add CacheEnable disk / to the configuration, nothing happened (i do have mod_disk_cache included). Can anyone help with my issue? The apache config file is here Thanks in advance Edit: So far I have been testing it with smaller text files, and it hasn't been caching properly. This suggests it is nothing to do with us actually downloading video, but actually to do with the cache configuration.

• Is this DVD drive broken? Brand new, i need help convincing

  I am asking bc i know dell is going to give me a problem. How do i know if my DVD is broken on my laptop? i burnt 4 DL disc and they ALL failed, i called and dell suggested roxio. I used it and burnt 1 disc without error and the 2nd disc with an error. With both apps there were no 'problems' during the burning process only failed on the verification process. Some of these bad disc dont work on other PCs and one locks up windows when i click a specific file. Does that sound like a broken burner to you guys? when i called dell they told me since it can read disc properly 100% of the time and software doesnt fail in the burning process its not a broken drive _. They forward me to software support who demand a fee (i think $100) to help me fix my software. I am annoyed bc i dont want to be on the phone for them to watch me burn a dvd and since i burned it once correctly i dont want to happen to burn correctly again to have them say they solved my problem (doing nothing) and charge me refusing to refund. -edit- The errors i got were 1) the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error 2) Windows locking up when opening 1 specific file 3) Cannot copy : Data error (crc) NOTE: the file that causes the problems are random every disc

• Need some help figuring out BB4Win or any of its varieties: does it replace windows explorer?

  I don't really care too much about replacing original Windows the desktop, taskbar and system tray. I really dislike the new Win7/Vista Windows Explorer: Screenshot here (just to make sure there's no confusion) So, what I'm trying to figure out is whether BB4Win or its plugins have a replacement for it. The bb4win website pretty much doesn't make sense to me. I'm using Win7 64 bit. Also, off-topic ... I was looking at a related question on this site here: Good Windows shell replacement Why can't I add comments? I wanted to ask the same question I'm asking now as a comment under the answer given by Molly7244, the person who answered with suggesting BB4Win. But there seems to be no way to add new comments anywhere! Why? Am I missing something? I don't quite understand the weird way this site is set up... I'm used to the more typical forum format. Sorry.
